At first, all the letters and confessions had been flattering. Opening her locker to see a flood of letters fall out almost every day was an interesting experience, and she was happy that so many people admired her. But now it was getting old, especially since she’d started dating you, her long-time crush.
“I’m over this,” she said out loud as she dropped the pile from her backpack onto her desk, nose wrinkled. This had become habit, coming home to sort through the notes every day. Now, she mostly just tossed them into the trash, annoyed. Behind her, you laughed, walking up to peek over her shoulder at the pile as you slid off your backpack and sat it down.
“Wow, there’s more than there were yesterday.”
“This isn’t funny.” There was a whine in her voice as she turned around to look at you, but you just grinned, obviously amused.
“I think it’s funny. And cute. So many people like you, Hyunjin!”
“Shouldn’t you be jealous or something?”
“Nope.” You kissed her on the cheek and laughed. “I know you’re whipped for me and only me.”
“True,” she muttered, blushing slightly as she looked away, back to the notes. “Still. I’m really annoyed. I’m dating you now! I don’t want any confessions!”
“Do they know that, though?” You stepped back to flop down onto her bed, raising your eyebrows. “It’s not like we ever officially announced it or anything.”
“Yeah but all the notes from girls have stopped.”
“That might just be because the girls noticed us together and recognized it for what it is. The dudes might not understand that when I hug you after a game, it’s not platonic.” You patted the spot beside you, and Hyunjin joined you on the bed, letting out a sigh.
“Good point. That’s so annoying.”
“You’re cute when you’re annoyed,” you teased, reaching over to pat her cheeks gently. Flushing, she huffed.
“Whatever. I want to end this. Do you mind if I announce our relationship to the school?”
“I don’t mind,” you said with a shrug, “do whatever you think is best.”
“Okay, I will.” She sat back, looking at you. You were still wearing your cheer uniform, your hair back in a high ponytail, and it made her smile. “You look cute today.”
“Really? Thank you!” You giggled and leaned in, pressing a little kiss to her lips. “You look cute today too, for the record.”
“Thanks, although I think a lot more cool than cute.”
“That’s a lie. You’re the cutest kitty cat I’ve ever met.”
She wrinkled her nose, making you laugh. “Ew. What the heck is up with that nickname?”
“What, do you not like it? Sometimes you act like a cat. So that’s my new nickname for you. Kitty cat.”
“It’s kind of gross.”
“Too bad.” You stuck out your tongue, then squealed as she gently tackled you, knocking you back onto the mattress and raising her eyebrows.
“Too bad? Then I’m going to stick you with some gross nickname too.”
“Go for it.”
“Honey bun. Or how about ponytail princess?”
You just laughed. “I’m not opposed.”
“You’re a brat, you know that?” She leaned in, pressing her forehead to yours, and you grinned, reaching up to touch her cheek and resting a hand on the back of her neck, looking up at her with twinkling eyes.
“I know. But you like me anyway.”
“You’re right, I do,” she said softly, leaning in to kiss you. When she pulled away, she laughed. “We’re supposed to be studying, you know.”
“Nobody has to know if we don’t,” you said as you pulled her in again, kissing her softly. You tasted like the Starbucks the two of you had picked up on the way home and Hyunjin let her eyes flutter closed, forgetting all about those notes on the desk as you pulled her closer.

Hyunjin had known she was gay at a very young age. Some people have a long, agonizing process through which they realize their sexuality. For Hyunjin, it just took her watching one Pirates of the Caribbean film for her to realize: oh, hey, I’m gay. She told her mom that she wanted to marry Elizabeth Swan, and her mom, after being taken aback for a moment, laughed and said that a lot of people wanted to marry her too. She’d gotten lucky, both with the easy process and with supportive parents. When she’d actually come out to them for real in middle school, her mom had cried and told her that she was proud of her, and her father had given her an awkward hug and said “that’s cool” but it was all okay and now she had a girlfriend and they were totally cool with it. Seriously, Hyunjin probably had the best life she could ever ask for.
She still remembered the moment she realized that she liked you, too. The two of you had been friends for a little while by that time. Best friends, even. But then, as the two of you were about to enter high school, something had changed. She’d walked out of her house one morning to see you standing there waiting for her, your hair down and a wide smile on your face as you waved at her, and suddenly, her heart was racing. Out of nowhere, she’d fallen head over heels for you (although, if she really squinted, she could tell that she liked you before that too).
For a little while, she kept it inside, but after talking with her other friends, she decided to confess once she’d managed to get the position of soccer captain (the youngest student to do so in their school). She got it, of course she did, and thankfully, you’d accepted her confession and told her that you liked her too. It had only been a few months since the two of you had started dating, but she was already all-in, totally in love with you at every waking moment. She knew what it was like to like someone now.
And those letters, all proclaiming love she was sure that the sender didn’t really have, were beginning to seem less flattering and much, much more annoying. Especially now that a few of the guys would not take no for an answer.
-
“Seriously, Hansol,” she snapped as she turned around, holding a note up high in the air. The sender was standing behind her, a tall guy from the basketball team with dark hair and a dorky smile that would probably be attractive, if she was attracted to guys. Right now, though, all she felt was annoyance as she shoved the note back into his hands. “How many times do I have to tell you that I’m not interested before you get the hint?”
“I don’t think you’re taking me seriously when I say that I like you,” he said, trying to push the note back towards her.
“And I don’t think you’re taking me seriously when I say that I don’t like you!” For a while, Hyunjin, despite her personality, had tried to be nice about rejecting guys. Now, she couldn’t care less about their feelings. “This is the sixth time I’m telling you this.”
“That hurts, Hyunjin-ie.”
“I swear, you call me that again, I’ll break your goddamn nose.”
“That’s not very nice of you-.”
“I’m done being nice, Hansol!” She threw up her hands in frustration and tried to turn away. “I’m tired of having to reject you over and over!”
“Give me one good reason not to like me,” he said, moving to block her from leaving, and she almost snapped. Instead, though, she took a deep breath and turned around to look him right in the eyes.
“I’m gay, Hansol. Gay. A lesbian. I like girls. Not men. Only girls.” There, she’d said it. It wasn’t like she was trying to hide her sexuality (everyone who knew her or who cared to ask knew) but it did feel nice to finally say it to the face of one of her annoying male admirers. A look of shock crossed his face before he narrowed his eyes.
“Really? I don’t believe you. I think you’re just making up excuses.”
If she didn’t think she’d get in trouble, she’d punch him. But she didn’t, instead resorting to flipping him the bird. She really didn’t care what he told other people about her, she was tired of him. “Don’t believe me then. But I’m done talking to you.” With that, she shoved past him, much too strong for him to stop her, and stomped down the hallway, fuming as she headed for her next class. She could not believe the nerve of some of these guys.
“I take it you were stopped by Hansol again today,” Heejin said as soon as Hyunjin sat down in the seat beside her, and just the sound of his name was enough to make Hyunjin see red again.
“I seriously hate that guy. I can’t stand him. Why I’m his target I don’t know.” Huffing, she shook her head. “I even told him that I was gay, and guess what? He said he didn’t believe me.”
“What a piece of shit,” Heejin said, with conviction, nodding her head and wrinkling her nose. “I’m surprised you didn’t hit him.”
“I wanted to. But I have a game tonight. I can’t get into trouble and let my team down.”
“True.” With a little smile, Heejin reached over to pat Hyunjin’s hand. “I’m proud of you for being able to hold back, though.”
“Thanks,” Hyunjin said through gritted teeth, pulling out her phone to text you about the situation. “But I can’t promise anything for the next time.”
“I’ll call on Hyejoo to help hold you back.”
Hyejoo was younger than them, but on the swim team with some of their friends and surprisingly strong, almost rivaling Hyunjin’s strength. “Good idea. Once she hears how annoying he is, she can help me beat him up.”
“Not what I meant and you know it!”
Sighing, she let her shoulders slump. “I know. I’m just really tired of these guys. I wish I could do something to show them all and tell them to back off.”
“Well....” Heejin trailed off, and her eyes widened just the slightest bit, meaning that she was probably coming up with some terrible plan despite the sweet smile on her face. “There might be something you can do.”
-
Game nights always had Hyunjin’s system pumping with excitement and adrenaline. As the captain, there was a lot riding on her shoulders. She had to play her best game, every game, in order to carry the team to victory. She also had to keep her head up even during the worst of circumstances in order to keep the spirits up in the team. It was stressful, sometimes, but Hyunjin loved soccer and she loved her team, so she wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Tonight, though, Hyunjin had other things on her mind. As she stretched, she looked out across the field at where you were cheering, mulling over her plan. Could she really do this, in front of everyone?
“Ready, Captain?” Hyejoo, one of the younger girls, asked as she walked up, finished with her stretches. Nodding her head, Hyunjin stood to her feet and stretched her arms across her chest one last time.
“I’m ready.” She turned to look at all of her girls, rolled her shoulders, and grinned. “Alright Blockberry Bears! Are we ready to play?” A cheer came up from the girls as they finished their stretches and jumped up, and Hyunjin motioned for them all to come in, placing out her hand. As if on command, they all placed their hands on top of hers, and she took in a deep breath. She was going to win this game, and then she was going to show everyone that she was yours and only yours. “On three! One, two, three, let’s roar!”
“Let’s roar!” The girls yelled back as they threw up their hands, matching her determination, and she knew that this game was theirs. One of the younger girls, Yeojin, even let out a war cry, making everyone laugh, spirits high. Setting her jaw, Hyunjin tightened her ponytail and let her team onto the field. It was time to fight.
Ever since she was young, Hyunjin had hated sitting still. That’s why she loved soccer so much. There was never a quiet moment. She could run and run and fight and fight and not get tired at all. Girls soccer could get aggressive, with shoving and kicking and cleats digging into skin, but that just made Hyunjin love it even more. She could go all out on the field, her hair flying behind her, sweat dripping down her face and lungs and legs burning from the effort as she used her weight and strength to her advantage. When she was playing, she forgot about everything but the game.
Well, except for you.
Sometimes, she’d turn after making a goal just to see you cheer for her, just as you always had. Even before you were a cheerleader, you’d cheered her on from the sidelines, no matter how good or bad she was doing. You were her number one supporter, and you always had been. And the thought of you watching and cheering made her play harder, better, just to see that happy, proud smile on your face.
Her foot kicked out, and the ball slammed into the net. The crowd cheered, and she wiped the sweat from her face as she jogged back to her spot. The two teams were tied, and there were only minutes left in the game. One goal would determine the game, and it could really go either way. Her lungs hurt a bit now, and as she took deep breaths, she glanced over at the sidelines. You were standing there, of course you were, and you gave her a smile and waved a pompom as her eyes locked with yours. She had to win this, for you.
But even as she upped her game, the other team did, too. Nobody wanted to lose, and that meant getting aggressive just to make sure the other team didn’t get that last shot. Somehow, she’d managed to get the ball from one of the opposing girls, but even though she saw it coming, she couldn’t move. A girl’s leg flew out, catching her at the knee, and she went flying, knee landing hard on the turf seconds before her head. For a moment, all she could feel was pain, but she grit her teeth and sat up, trying to clear the fog in her head to look down at her knee.
There was blood.
The referee blew the whistle, indicating a foul, and Hyunjin winced as her team gathered around her.
“What the hell, that was so dirty,” Sooyoung hissed, looking back at the other team. “She wasn’t even trying for the ball!”
“It’s fine, it happens,” Hyunjin said, gingerly touching at her knee. It was sore to the touch, and the burn from the turf was deep. On top of that, her head was pounding from the rough landing, and she was sure that she probably had another burn on her forehead. As the coach walked over with a bandage, she once again glanced towards the sidelines. You had dropped your pompoms and your hands were over your mouth, eyes wide with worry, and she grit her teeth. She was going to win this damn game.
“You’re going to need to get this knee checked out,” her coach said as he wiped at the skinned knee, and she put on a brave face, despite the fact that it hurt. “You might need to sit out for the rest of the game. I don’t think you should be playing with your knee like this.”
“As penalty for the foul, we get a free kick, right?” She looked back at her teammates. “I’ll take the kick.”
“Are you sure?” Yeojin’s eyes were wide. “It’s your kicking leg that’s messed up.”
“I’m sure. I could make the goal with my other leg if I tried.” She stood to her feet, ignoring the pain in her leg, and the stands cheered. “I’m taking that kick.”
If she was being honest with herself, this knee would have messed up her game. But this was a free kick, and she was great at free kicks, the best on the team. This kick could win them the game, and as the captain, she had to step up to the occasion. She tried to limp as little as possible as she lined up in front of the opposing goal, sizing up the goalie. The girl was small, but fast. Still, if she aimed for one of the high corners, she was sure she could get this.
She brought her injured leg back, aimed, and kicked as hard as she could. Pain seared through the leg, but she hardly even felt it as she breathlessly watched the ball soar through the air. The goalie jumped, reaching out her fingers, but the ball passed barely an inch above and slammed into the net. For a moment, Hyunjin could hardly believe it. But then the cheering of the stands and of her teammates registered, and she turned just in time to see her team running towards her. Hyejoo and Yeojin jumped right into her arms, and she stumbled back, struggling a bit on her leg as she caught them.
“Guys, I can’t hold as much right now, my knee!”
“Hey, the Captain is injured, you too!”
“Oh, yeah, sorry Captain!” Yeojin jumped out of her arms, but Hyejoo took her time, making Hyunjin laugh and shake her head.
“You did it! We won! We won!” Sooyoung pulled her into a tight hug. “Every time I see you play, I’m more amazed, you know that?”
“Our Captain is the best!” Hyejoo yelled out, and then Yeojin started to chant her name, prompting the entire team to join in. Hyunjin could feel her cheeks heating up, but she couldn’t hide her smile as she looked at her team.
“It wasn’t just me. You girls are amazing! Hyejoo, you did great not letting people past you, and Yeojin, you get faster every time I see you play! And Sooyoung, your kicks were great as usual. Our wonderful goalie Chaeyoung did incredible today too. Girls, we roared!” Once again, a cheer came up from the team, and Hyunjin grinned. She loved her team, she really did, and she could tell they loved her too.
After meeting the other team on the field and giving everyone high-fives and “good game”s, Hyunjin turned to the side of the field, and her heart jumped in her chest. You were waving around your pompoms, grinning widely, and she remembered her plan. Limping slightly, she made her way over to you, feeling more nervous than she had throughout the game.
“You did amazing,” you said as she walked up, opening up your arms for a hug and smiling brightly. Your cheeks were flushed, slightly, and Hyunjin could feel herself blushing as well as she hugged you.
“Thank you.”
“You shouldn’t have made that kick on your leg, though! You’re going to the doctor after this, Hyunjin!” You said as you pulled away, chiding her and knocking her shoulder lightly, and she just laughed. You always got worried when she hurt herself, and she’d heard this speech a couple times already.
“Yeah, but that last kick was kind of awesome, right?”
“It was. But I don’t approve of the method.” Your arms were still around her, holding her loosely, and she felt just as breathless as she had out there on the field.
Swallowing, she looked into your eyes and said it. “Can I kiss you?”
Your cheeks colored and your eyes widened. “Right now?”
“Yes, right now. I want to let everyone know that I’m yours.”
You giggled, leaning in closer. “Then yes. You can kiss me.”
That was all she needed to hear. Her lips connected to yours, gentle and sweet and short, and as she pulled away, she could hear gasps and her teammates laughing and cheering.
“I love you, (Y/N)” she whispered, blushing furiously, and you grinned, tucking her messy hair behind her ears and cupping her cheeks in your hands. It was all very intimate, but she didn’t care anymore. She was yours, and she wasn’t ashamed. All she felt was happiness, the thrill of winning mixed with the thrill of kissing you in front of everyone making her giddy. All of those notes were the furthest thing from her mind in that moment.
“I love you too, Hyunjin.”
-
The next day, the talk in the school was all about her. Although she was kind of used to being talked about after game day, it was a little bit embarrassing to hear everyone talk about her relationship. But everyone gave her smiles and thumbs-ups as she limped past with her bandaged knee, and Hansol passed her with nothing but a nod and a “congratulations,” making her feel much better about the whole thing.
Still, as she approached her locker, she felt a bit nervous. Had the plan really worked? Was she going to get nasty, angry notes in her locker now? Slowly, she opened it up. Instead of the usual tidal-wave, there was only one little note sitting perfectly in the middle of her locker. Raising her eyebrows, she reached out to pick it up and open it. Who...?
To the soccer goddess Hyunjin,
I admire you. Even when you hurt your knee and are too stubborn to sit the game out, I love you. Even when you’re weird, I love you. Even when you tease me, I love you. Even when you’re sweaty and gross and covered in dirt, I love you. Even though you give me strange gifts, I love you. I guess you can say that I love everything about you.
So what do you say? Go on a date with me this Saturday, Kitty Cat?
A grin spread over her face, just as arms slipped around her waist and she smelled your familiar perfume.
“So? What’s your answer, Kitty Cat?”
“I hate that nickname,” she said as she turned around to look at you, “but yes, I’ll go on a date with you this Saturday.”
You giggled, making Hyunjin’s heart jump. “Good. Although we’re going to do something sitting down, because you need to be resting your leg.”
“It’s not that bad, babe, I’ve had worse.”
“Are we having a lovers quarrel?” You raised your eyebrows, and she sighed, smiling as she playfully leaned back into you.
“Fine. But if I have to rest my leg, you should carry me to my next class.”
“Hyunjin, don’t! I’ll drop you!” You huffed as she laughed. “You don’t need to get hurt again!”
“Sorry, but you said that you love me even when I tease you.”
“I take it back.”
“No take backs.” She shoved the note into her backpack. “I’m going to frame this.”
“You’re so weird.”
“But you said you love it.”
You looked like you wanted to argue, but the bell rang, and you just smiled, shaking your head and taking her hand after she closed her locker, the two of you walking to class. “I trapped myself, didn’t I?”
“You did.” She smiled, looking over at you. You had no idea how happy that note had made her. She really was living the dream life now, regardless of what other people might think. She didn’t care, as long as she had you. “But for the record, I love everything about you too.”
