Vodafone Idea Secures Rs 5,400 Crore from Anchor Investors Ahead of FPO
As Vodafone Idea (VIL) prepares for its much-anticipated Follow-On Public Offering (FPO), the telecom giant has successfully closed its anchor book allocation, raising a substantial Rs 5,400 crore from both global and domestic investors. This significant investment marks a pivotal moment for the company, positioning it strategically as it gears up for the next phase of growth.
Tumblr media
The anchor book allocation, comprising 490.9 crore shares allotted to 74 funds, saw enthusiastic participation from esteemed investors at Rs 11 per share, reflecting confidence in VIL’s potential. Among the notable investors are GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity Fund, Fidelity, UBS Fund Management, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and others, alongside domestic heavyweights like Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund, and SBI General Insurance.
This achievement places Vodafone Idea’s anchor book as the third-largest in history, following the footsteps of One 97 Communications and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), which raised Rs 8,235 crore and Rs 5,627 crore, respectively, in their anchor rounds. Such substantial support underscores the confidence investors have in VIL’s future prospects.
The forthcoming FPO, scheduled to open for public subscription on April 18 and conclude on April 22, is poised to be the country’s largest, with a price band set between Rs 10 and Rs 11 per share. This monumental fundraising endeavor is expected to inject fresh capital into VIL, empowering the company to bolster its position in the fiercely competitive Indian telecom market.
With industry giants like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel dominating the landscape, Vodafone Idea aims to leverage these funds to fortify its presence, accelerate the much-awaited 5G rollout, enhance 4G services, and address pending vendor dues. Additionally, the infusion of capital will enable VIL to execute its ambitious plans of matching its competitors’ offerings and stemming the tide of subscriber attrition.
The road ahead hasn’t been easy for Vodafone Idea, grappling with a daunting debt burden of Rs 2.1 lakh crore and consecutive quarterly losses. Despite these challenges, the company remains resolute in its commitment to rejuvenate its operations and emerge stronger in the ever-evolving telecom sector.
As the telecom landscape continues to evolve, Vodafone Idea’s strategic moves and robust investor support signal a new chapter in its journey towards revitalization and sustainable growth. With the stage set for its transformative FPO, all eyes are on VIL as it navigates through the dynamic telecom terrain, poised for a resurgence in the days to come.

Why Vi is Falling Behind JIO and Airtel: A Look at Digital Marketing
Tumblr media
In the competitive world of telecommunications, companies like JIO, Airtel, and Vi are constantly battling for market share. However, Vi has been facing challenges in keeping up with its competitors. One of the main reasons is its approach to digital marketing.
The Current Scenario
As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (Trai) March 2022 data, Vodafone Idea Limited accounts for 22.83% subscriber share in the market, versus that of its competitors Jio (35.37%) and Airtel (31.55%). This indicates a significant gap that Vi needs to bridge.
Digital Presence
Jio and airtel have a strong digital presence with their own platforms like JioTV, JioCinema, JioSaavn, JioGameslite, Airtel Xstream, Airtel DTH, and Airtel Wynk music. These platforms not only provide additional services to their customers but also serve as effective marketing tools. They help in building a strong brand image and increase customer engagement.
On the other hand, Vi has chosen a different path. Instead of developing its own platforms, Vi has opted to collaborate with domain experts such as Nazara Technologies for gaming and Hungama Music for music streaming. While this approach allows Vi to offer a range of services, it does not provide the same level of brand visibility as having its own platforms. This could be a reason why Vi is falling behind in the digital race.
Digital Marketing Strategy
Vi has launched an AI and ML-powered AdTech platform called Vi Ads. This platform aims to give marketers a programmatic media buying platform that is cutting edge and ROI focused. However, this strategy might not be as effective as having a strong digital presence through owned platforms.
Programmatic media buying is a method of buying and selling of ad inventory in real-time during the loading of a webpage. While this is a great way to target specific audiences, it might not be enough to compete with the strong digital presence of JIO and Airtel.
Conclusion
While Vi’s approach to digital marketing through collaborations and an AdTech platform is innovative, it might not be enough to compete with the strong digital presence of JIO and Airtel. To improve its market position, Vi might need to reconsider its digital marketing strategy and possibly develop its own digital platforms.
Remember, in the fast-paced world of telecommunications, staying ahead means adapting quickly to changes and meeting the customers where they are - online. This means having a strong digital presence and an effective digital marketing strategy. Without these, it can be difficult for a company to compete and stay relevant in the market.

Vodafone Idea defers Rs 8,837 crore AGR dues payment by four years
Tumblr media
Vodafone Idea (Vi) will take a four-year moratorium on paying Rs 8837 crore as AGR dues, in addition to the option it exercised last year. The telecom company also has the option to convert interest on the deferred amount into additional equity to the government.
The government will own 33 per cent stake in Vi after an earlier decision to convert interest with net present value of interest worth Rs 16,000 crore into equity. It may get a further 6-7 per cent stake if the company opts for conversion again, said a telecom sector analyst. Vi did not comment on what it plans.
Vi, in a late evening stock exchange notification on Wednesday, said that on June 15 it got a government letter offering four-year moratorium for all AGR dues up to financial year 2018-19.
The company's board has decided to defer the AGR (annual gross revenue) dues of Rs 8837 crore, it said. The amount is subject to revision on account of disposal of representations and the final amount has to be paid in six equal installments after the end of the moratorium in March 2026.
