Dodd - Lake District. An image from the archives; captured around 2 years ago on a sublime winter day in the Lake District. God knows why I didn't upload at the time, but here it is finally.... Looking out from the slopes of Sale Fell, it's hard to believe that there's a whole lake lurking beneath the mist here - that body of water being Bassenthwaite. The hill of Dodd, which is a subsidiary summit of Skiddaw, can be seen across the valley encompassed by the mystical sea of fog. I really liked how the foreground trees were partly enveloped by the clouds, adding to the depth and mystical atmosphere. About an hour or so after this image was taken, the mist retreated and Bassenthwaite Lake emerged once again. #dodd #doddwood #doddfell #thecumbriaguide #cumbriaguide #igerscumbria #landscape_captures #sonyalpha #sonyshooters #lakedistrictnationalpark #lakedistrictnpa #lakelandphoto #visitthelakes #fromlakelandwithlove #thelakelanders #mist #fog #winter #picturetokeep_nature #rural_love #cumbria (at Sale Fell) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChkZ6JojTU7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This is the second shot of my faves in black and white. Again from Brougham Castle up near Penrith. I particularly took this shot as I liked the look of where the moat would’ve been and with that single tree it just caught my eye. Again with the clouds looming overhead I instantly knew that whatever shots I got, they were going to work in black and white and luckily managed a few more shots before the heavens opened and the rain came #broughamcastle #englishheritage #visitthelakes #visitthelakedistrict #visitcumbria #visitpenrith #historicengland #lakedistrict #lakedistrictnationalpark #castlesofinstagram #explorecumbria #explorelakedistrict #explorethelakes #castle #nikonphotography #nikon #blackandwhitephotography #blackandwhite #rivereamont #gloriousbritain #edenvalley #tree #moat (at Brougham Castle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHm4EATg6W4/?igshid=1klcyqtp0lt88

Grasmere - The Lake District
Walking trip to the beautiful Lakes. We covered hills, waterfalls, lakes, tarns and caves.
From our Airbnb (pictured) above a little cafe in gorgeous Grasmere we were in walking distance to Easedale Tarn. The walk starts in Grasmere, taking you out of the village, through farmland, and then follows Easedale Beck and then the aptly named Sourmilk Gill (waterfall pictured) up to Easedale Tarn. At this point, you can then choose to turn back the way you came for a slightly shorter (five miles) walk. However, for the more adventurous and those who prefer a circular route, you can descend through farmland on the other side of the waterfall and beck. This way of descent is quite boggy, and although there are plenty of stepping stones it is best avoided after heavy rain. We also walked around the far side of the lake following mainly sheep trails! Finally got back to the beautiful Lancrigg and never have I been so happy to see food and a pint of cider!
That night we had dinner at Lewis of Grasmere restaurant which was lovely.
The next day we walked the ‘Coffin Trail’ from Grasmere around to Rydal Water. We explored the caves and the path was busier but also easier. Ended up on a beach (pictured) with lots of other families with kids kyaking and paddleboarding. Lots of potential there for families. By the time we got back to Grasmere we were ready for a rest and found another gorgeous spot for a rest (socks off!) at The Grand of Grasmere. So many good places to eat and drink in Grasmere. Followed by Tweedies Bar where we enjoyed seeing the sun go down behind the surrounding hills. Great food there too and live music on the Saturday night.
We had four days but there is so much to see and do. We will definitely return!

High Seat - Lake District. The spectacular summer solstice sunset viewed from the summit of High Seat on the longest day of the year yesterday. I really like the summit outcrop of this hill, topped with an Ordnance Survey column. These structures, often known as trig points, are generally placed on the highest point of a certain area and were used to map out Britain as they aid in geodetic surveying. I read that the nearby Armboth Fell is the most central summit in the Lake District, so I’m assuming this is the most central trig point in the National Park as it’s the closest one to that point. High Seat is quite unique because, despite being just shy of 2000ft in altitude and the fact that there’s many higher hills in the Lake District, this summit is the highest point for 5 miles in all directions due to the fact that the central upland area of the National Park is actually lower than the surrounding mountains. Therefore, the top affords an amazing 360 degree panorama of many of the highest mountains in the country including, pictured here, Bowfell, Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Pillar. To the north-west, there is a gap between the mountains of Grisedale Pike & Skiddaw which provides distant views to Scotland on a clear day, and at this time of year this is the direction where the sun sets – therefore I was rewarded with this stunning light as the sun dipped over the distant horizon. #highseat #trigpoint #ordnancesurvey #trigcolumn #lakedistrictnationalpark #lakedistrictnpa #lakedistrict #fromlakelandwithlove #visitthelakes #thelakelanders #thecumbriaguide #cumbriaguide #landscape_captures #sonyalpha #sonyshooters #summersolstice #lakelandphoto #rural_love #picturetokeep_nature #igerscumbria (at High Seat (Lake District)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfHLv8qD9_S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Blea Tarn beyond Standing Crag - Lake District. Captured a couple of months ago on the top of Standing Crag in the Lake District, which is a subsidiary summit of the Wainwright fell Ullscarf. This view overlooking the remote Blea Tarn is one of my favourites within this range of hills, especially in the summer months when the sun sets perfectly in the distance. I was very lucky with a small gap in the clouds on this occasion, allowing the sun to appear for a few minutes before disappearing behind Grisedale Pike in the distance. #bleatarn #standingcrag #ullscarf #lakedistrictnationalpark #lakedistrictnpa #lakelandphoto #igerscumbria #igerslakedistrict #ig_countryside #rural_love #picturetokeep_nature #lakedistrictumbria #sunset #landscape_captures #sonyalpha #sonyshooters #visitthelakes #thelakelanders #fromlakelandwithlove #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide (at Ullscarf) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiCVBJqjPpf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Broom Fell - Lake District. It's starting to get to that time of year where the night's are drawing in and it's getting a little bit more of a rush to get up the hills for sunset after finishing work, so I'm definitely going to make the most of the next month or so before I'm unable to do so until next year (except on my day's off). Last night I had enough time to venture to Broom Fell in the north-western fells of the Lake District; albeit a mixture of brisk walking and fell-running to make it to the summit in time for the setting sun. On an otherwise grassy and rather featureless hill, this cairn and shelter are very prominent on the summit. In fact, in my opinion this is one of the best cairns in the Lake District, especially with it's position offering far-reaching views over the Solway Firth to Scotland and Irish Sea to the Isle of Man. I was actually planning on photographing in the opposite direction towards the inner mountainous Lake District, but the light wasn't exactly how I'd imagined so I opted for this vista towards the distant sun on the horizon with the cairn and shelter included in view. #broomfell #cairn #shelter #sunset #lakedistrictnationalpark #lakedistrictnpa #lakelandphoto #igerscumbria #lakedistrict #fromlakelandwithlove #visitthelakes #thelakelanders #thecumbriaguide #cumbriaguide #landscape_captures #sonyalpha #sonyshooters #hiking #hillwalking #picturetokeep_nature #uk_scenery #uk_greatshots #rural_love (at Broom Fell) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChomV6LDctP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Over Water from Little Sca Fell - Lake District. I just love the rolling contours of these northern Lake District fells; they possess their own distinctive charm which feels far removed from the rugged centre of the National Park. The Uldale Fells in particular are my favourite, with far-reaching views out towards the Solway Firth and distant Scotland. The sunsets here are spectacular at any time of the year, but especially so in summer when the late light illuminates the golden grasses perfectly. I also really like how the contours of the hills are defined by the contrasting light and shadows at this time of day. Here, the source of the River Ellen can be seen descending towards the distant small lake of Over Water, viewed from the airy summit of Little Sca Fell. #littlescafell #uldalefells #overwater #sunset #lakedistrictnationalpark #lakedistrictnpa #unescoworldheritagesite #worldheritagesite #lakelandphoto #igerscumbria #visitthelakes #thelakelanders #fromlakelandwithlove #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #landscape_captures #sonyalpha #sonyshooters #rural_love #picturetokeep_nature #hikingthelakes (at Little Sca Fell) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChSpoQ4jJCk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Binsey from Meal Fell - Lake District. A very atmospheric sunset captured near the summit of Meal Fell in the northern Lake District, looking out towards the small lake of Over Water in the shadow of Binsey hill. Meal Fell is quite a secretive summit as it is tucked closely within many taller hills - therefore it is not noticeably visible from many viewpoints except those within close proximity; and when viewed from a distance it blends into the higher contours encircling it. In his guidebooks for the Lake District, author Mark Richards describes Meal Fell as a 'hideaway height' and goes on to say: 'here you can imagine yourself far removed from life's turmoil - a timeless air pervades the setting, and only vapour trails in the sky give a clue to a global world of travel and travail'. Even though the view inland is limited by the surrounding uplands, the summit itself is a rather exhilarating place to stand. The prospect north and west from the top is truly breathtaking with far-reaching views out towards the Solway Firth and distant Scotland; certainly making up for the limited views in other directions. There is also a substantial shelter on the summit which provides respite from the prevailing westerly winds which often preside here. The wind was certainly strong on this occasion, but it was definitely worth braving for this sublime sunset light. The hill of Binsey, which is the northernmost of the Wainwright summits within the National Park, can be seen silhouetted above the small lake of Over Water. The large rocks provided some perfect foreground interest on an otherwise featureless slope descending steeply from the summit down to the source of the River Ellen. #mealfell #binsey #lakedistrictnationalpark #lakedistrictnpa #lakelandphoto #igerscumbria #rural_love #picturetokeep_nature #thelakelanders #fromlakelandwithlove #visitthelakes #lostinthelakedistrict #outinthelakes #landscape_captures #sunset #thegreatoutdoors #ordnancesurvey #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #ukpotd #overwater (at Meal Fell) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChAf1IiDHs2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Bassenthwaite Lake from Dood Wood - Lake District. After the heat recently, it was lovely to cool off on the summit of Dodd yesterday evening and witness this marvellous sunset. I was actually planning on photographing some trees on the summit in the foreground, but unfortunately the wind picked up quite strong and I therefore couldn't capture them without them being blurry; so I opted for this wider perspective of the whole vista from a point slightly lower than the summit. The whole of Bassenthwaite Lake can be seen from here, with the Whinlatter Forest and fells on the opposite shore including Lord's Seat and Barf. Even the distant hill of Criffel can be seen across the Solway Firth in Scotland. #dodd #doddwood #doddfell #bassenthwaitelake #lakedistrictnationalpark #lakedistrictnpa #lakedistrict #thecumbriaguide #cumbriaguide #landscape_captures #sonyalpha #sonyshooters #thelakelanders #fromlakelandwithlove #visitthelakes #lakelandphoto #igerscumbria #forestryengland #rural_love #picturetokeep_nature (at Dodd) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgRKIX1DMXk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Blea Tarn below Standing Crag - Lake District. A fiery sunset the other evening in the Central Fells of the Lake District. Following on from my previous post; not long after the sun disappeared over the horizon I quickly changed locations to a nearby rocky outcrop as the sky suddenly went totally crazy. The spectacle lasted for absolutely ages, and there were even remnants of the afterglow over an hour later on the drive back home north. Here, the large remote water of Blea Tarn can be seen from Standing Crag; a subsidiary summit of the parent fell Ullscarf. I had been eyeing up this location for a while, and had visited a few times during the day, but this was my first sunset expedition so I was pretty chuffed to experience this on my first attempt. There are 3 Blea Tarns in the National Park, but this is the largest and least visited of them all. The distant silhouetted mountain skyline includes a few famous peaks including Grisedale Pike and Skiddaw, and Bassenthwaite Lake can also be seen in the distance. #lakedistrict #lakedistrictnpa #lakedistrictnationalpark #visitthelakes #thelakelanders #fromlakelandwithlove #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #ukpotd #sunset #lakelandphoto #bleatarn #igerscumbria #standingcrag #ullscarf #landscape_captures #sonyalpha #sonyshooters #picturetokeep_nature #uk_scenery #rural_love #onelakedistrict #theplacetobe #lostinthelakedistrict (at Ullscarf) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfeY3_DDi0L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Blea Tarn from Standing Crag - Lake District. A fine sunset yesterday in the central Lake District, overlooking Blea Tarn from Standing Crag. This is one of my favourite 'non-Wainwright' summits in the National Park, though it is a subsidiary peak of the nearby Ullscarf which is included in Wainwright's Pictorial Guides. This crag certainly offers a more impressive vista than the parent fell though, with this aspect towards the remote water of Blea Tarn and the distant Bassenthwaite Lake being the main focus. Starting from Dob Gill car park on the shore of Thirlmere Reservoir, there is a multitude of scenery on the ascent including forests and the lovely Harrop Tarn, although the last mile or so involves some bog-trotting to say the least. For this shot I used the curving foreground rocks to frame the bottom of the tarn, and I photographed vertically to include much of the stunning clouds above. Most of the sky was blanketed in a layer of higher cloud, but a gap on the horizon provided just enough room for the sun to make a brief appearance just before dipping behind Grisedale Pike in the distance. The mountain of Skiddaw can also be seen to the right. #standingcrag #ullscarf #bleatarn #lakedistrictnationalpark #lakedistrictnpa #unescoworldheritagesite #worldheritagesite #sunset #landscape_captures #sonyalpha #sonyshooters #lakedistrict #lakelandphoto #igerscumbria #visitthelakes #thelakelanders #fromlakelandwithlove #cumbriaguide #thecumbriaguide #ukpotd #rural_love #picturetokeep_nature #ordnancesurvey (at Ullscarf) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfa2pqNjt51/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
