Poor Virginia's still navigating the grieving process of losing Bondi when Jill moves in.

Jill: "I know I cheated on your brother with a college kid, but we're still good, right, fave sister-in-law?"

Virginia: *sobs even harder*

Jewel: "Why is she even here?!"

Apparently, to form a cool hat club with the other gals of the house.

Brighton: "Oh, so I'm not good enough for a cool hat?"

JoAnn: "Let me have this kid, my husband got pancaked by a satellite last week."

Brighton's also grieving for his big brother and can't find a good way to deal with it, other than repeatedly kicking over the trash can and inviting vermin to descend on the Beech beach huts. Now everyone is suffering from on-again off-again flu. Should've let him have a cool hat, y'all...

Okay, that was just what he needed to get through the homework.

Hamilton decides it's time for another party. (When is it not?) Wallys figures a cup of espresso will keep him from conking out too early.

Virginia is full of the show she's working on, and it doesn't escape Wallys's notice that Dawn hangs on her every word. "Yea, I'm the third astronaut, the one who fights the alien with the wrench and screams: "Mayday" as I spiral off into space. Not much screentime, but I can sink my teeth into it."

Let's try this again, Sandy thinks. "So you're down with the plan to move back in here?" "It seems very economical, and I can take over the housework while you're in the store. Or I can help with the store." "Don't you have ambitions of your own?" "Not the sort that other people think of as ambitions."

"Watch out! You saw what I can do earlier today!" "Yeah, but I don't have a bum knee." "You two watch out! This oven's hot!"

Yup. The party is still hearty in this old bod.

"I was thinking - a memoir of mama would be a good thing, wouldn't it?" "…Surely that'd be primarily of local interest." "Nothing wrong with local interest. She did a lot for this town - she should be remembered!"

Beech, Day 85, Part 1

Virginia: Hi Sue - where are you off to?

Sue: Oh, the kids are with Luis and I was at a loose end so I was just going for a walk.

Virginia: Well, feel free to come in if you fancy some company.

The new layout at the Community Centre works much better than the old one.

Sandra now wants to be friends with her future parents-in-law (she and Ed aren't even engaged yet, but she wants to be!)

Hey, the host actually did a good job of splitting them across two tables here.

Ed: Yeah, only two more semesters until I graduate now.

Ed: I think my parents like you.

That is a post-date gift I've never seen before!!

Sandra got an outing call from Edison's mum, so off she went to the Community Centre. As random outing calls go, this one wasn't too random - her boyfriend and his parents, his older brother, and only two random friends.

Despite its undignified name, Muddy Creek is a lovely mountain stream that normally runs fast and clear on its steep descent to Cheat River. But after a week of heavy rain in NC-WV, the stream looked a bit murky yesterday. Not even the sediment washing away from the mountains dims its beauty in my eyes. And the enchanting, moss-encrusted forest along its bank holds its own late summer treasures.

From top: great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), which pairs beautifully with cardinal flower to provide late summer color in a native wildflower garden; white wood aster (Eurybia divaricata), which is the most common of the shade-loving white asters in this area; crooked-stemmed aster (Symphyotrichum prenanthoides), also known as zigzag aster, whose clasping, spatula-shaped leaves distinguish it from big-leaf aster, another woods-loving aster with lavender flowers; blue-stemmed goldenrod (Solidago caesia), whose spreading, yellow-flowered stems provide stunning late-season color in a native wildflower garden; an intensely-green collage of moss, woodland stonecrop (Sedum ternatum), Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) and heartleaf foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia), which I am trying hard to reproduce in my own native wildflower shade garden; the shaggy-maned stem of Coker's Amanita (Amanita cokeri), one of the most impressive mushrooms of Appalachia's summer forests; beech-drops (Epifagus virginiana), a parasitic plant that grows and subsists on beach tree roots; the bright red berries of false Solomon's seal (Maianthemum racemosum); yellow jewelweed (Impatiens pallida), whose explosive seed pods give the plant its other common name, pale touch-me-not; and narrow-leaved tick-trefoil (Desmodium paniculatum), also known as panicled tick-trefoil, a late summer pea whose sticky seed pods commonly hitch rides on shoes and boots.

VeronaHills, Round Six: Beech

Sandy grew up by the seaside; a waterbaby from day dot. She lamented the lack of shores in Riverblossom Hills during her showers.

What did the village have instead? Pollen to cut people down in their prime? Gossip hanging on lips like grapes on the vine? Sandy wished she had buried her toes in the sand and refused the offer of Hamilton's mother. Daytona wasn't a council cronie for nothing, though. She made her pokey cottage basement sound like paradise.

Besides, would Hamilton ever say no to his dear mother?

The faucet squeaked shut, and Sandy left that question unanswered.

The children were adapting well. Virginia was already talking as if she were a freshman at Mission University ("My major? Undecided - I'd love to do a double though!"). Rocky made fast friends at the village school. Extroversion seemed hereditary, thank goodness. It seemed only Sandy missed sun and salt spray - but just when she felt the precipice of bitterness, Hamilton drew her into his arms and made an announcement.

"I'm stepping down," he said, "as Daytona's campaign manager."

Sandy openly wore her surprise. "Really?"

"She's got eyes on new blood for the election, and I want to make the most of being here, with you."

Champagne was popped and poured and Sandy wondered if she was dreaming. As she took a sip, she recalled her night with Rhett Hart, and silently thanked the morning after pill.

Throwing an affair in Hamilton's face would have been a surefire way to ruin this new, less-Daytona era.

Despite her frustration, Virginia perseveres and possesses her soul in patience. She's far too much an optimist to let a little thing like taking awhile to get discovered get her down for long. As for Max, he's a little stressed from all the personal injury cases he's seeing, and would like to upgrade a few things - like the laptop that just blew up for no reason - but sees no cause for complaint.

"You're such a good dog, Alabama! I think Daddy's warmed up to you a lot."

Okay, so Alabama may be old, but she's a really nice dog and having her doesn't absolutely preclude getting a puppy, too. And she still needs training, old or young.

"Oh my plumbob! I got the part! I got the part!" Okay, she has a whopping total of two lines, one of which is "Yes, ma'am." But her foot is in the door!

"I have to start today which is going to leave Mom in the lurch a bit but I got the part, Birb!"

"We are going to be rolling in money and fame and you are getting the top-notch food, you bet!"

Buddy and Freddy are both fairly close to Gryff's age. He particularly has no friends outside of the family. Freddy would be a good friend ot have since their mums are friends.

Justin's a cousin, so he doesn't count.

Promotion!

These two don't have much going on right now, unless you count Jason being rather attentive to Dot on a community lot a couple of rotations ago, getting her phone number, and then not doing anything about it until her next rotation, calling her whilst she was at work.

Fitness is Gavi's OTH, so I got her a yoga mat.

After school, Gavi and Gryff (who don't really have many friends and would just stay home playing chess all afternoon if I let them) went down to the Youth Club in Riverford.
