The Odyssey of Menon's Masterpiece: Decoding the Delay of Vikram's "Dhruva Natchathiram"
Tumblr media
The Unending Wait for Gautham Menon's 'Dhruva Natchathiram'
Fans of the Indian film director Gautham Vasudev Menon, known for his emotionally charged and stylish thrillers, have been on the edge of their seats for the release of his long-awaited film, Dhruva Natchathiram. Despite the mounting anticipation, Menon recently took to social media to express his dismay over the film's persistent postponement, voicing his sentiments with a heartfelt video post. The ambitious spy thriller, which began production in 2016, stars the versatile Vikram in the lead, supported by an ensemble cast including Aishwarya Rajesh, Ritu Varma, and Simran. The project, heralded as one of Menon's most consequential works, promised high-octane action and suspense in true Menon fashion, buttressed by the towering persona of Vikram. Menon's appeal reflected the simmering frustration of all those involved in the project, as he laid bare the formidable challenges they've faced. Alongside production issues and financial obstacles, the film has found itself reckoning with unpredictable calamities like the Chennai floods and global hits such as demonetization and the COVID-19 pandemic. The accumulation of these events has left the film's fate hanging in the balance, much to the agony of its creators and expectant fans. However, the director's emotional words served not only as a lament but also as a beacon of hope. Menon assured his followers that Dhruva Natchathiram would eventually see the light of day. His undertaking binds him, he declared, to ensure the film − crafted with immense labor and undying passion − reaches the audience it's meant for. The journey of Dhruva Natchathiram is exemplary of the numerous challenges filmmakers often face in the shadow of their creative endeavors. The industry's unpredictable nature can demand a price even on the most promising of projects, leaving creators like Menon to shoulder the weight of unfulfilled potential and anticipatory admirers. Amidst these trials, Menon has not stopped creating. His appetite for storytelling continues to find outlets in other forms of media. Still, the need to conclude the narrative of Dhruva Natchathiram remains a personal and professional mission for Menon, who holds the movie's completion close to his heart. In his own words, it is about fulfilling a commitment − a promise to deliver a cinematic experience to those who have been waiting patiently and trustingly. The film industry is often characterized by its ebb and flow of success and setbacks. In the case of Dhruva Natchathiram, it exemplifies both the resilience required to navigate such waves and the passion that fuels creators to push beyond them. This story is not just about a film delayed, but of human spirit and endurance in the art of filmmaking, persistent against the tides of uncertainty. For Gautham Menon, his team, and the fans of Dhruva Natchathiram, the hope is that their patience and support will culminate in a rousing cinematic triumph. Until then, their vigil continues, marked by a collective optimism for the day when the curtains finally part and the lights dim down in theaters welcoming Vikram’s indomitable silhouette on the silver screen. PS Mithran’s ‘Sardar’, with Karthi and Raashi Khanna, is an engaging spy thriller that sticks close to the genre
PS Mithran’s ‘Sardar’, with Karthi and Raashi Khanna, is an engaging spy thriller that sticks close to the genre
Spoilers ahead… The film doesn’t bring you to the edge of your seat. Still, it is a solid addition to Hollywood-derived actioners like ‘Maanadu’ and ‘Vikram’..  PS Mithran may have developed a new genre: ShankarWood. Like the director Shankar, he takes an issue and makes it the basis for a Hollywood-style, hero-centric action movie. In Irumbu Thirai, the issue was cybercrime. In Hero, the issue…

The Desi Guide to Binge-Watching in the Holiday Season
I remember going to watch the comedy “Luv Shuv Te Chicken Khurana” at AMC Mercado in Santa Clara California a few years back. There were 3 people in the theater that afternoon. My girlfriend and I, both die-hard Bollywood first day first show fanatics. And a white guy. The movie was a slow disappointment, but the white guy loved it. He told us that he came for the color, the song, and the dance and didn't mind if the experience may be marred by badly contexed sub-titles.
Bollywood forgets that the greater audience may be beyond the desi crowd. Some filmmakers need to start thinking about that paradigm. Every time a bhangra song plays in a club, the white people love swinging into action. Holi at Stanford is mostly white and most technology companies are hotbeds of Indian culture, led by Bollywood styling.
As Desis, Bollywood is our expression, whether we were born in the sub-continent or not, whether we moved out of India decades ago or are fresh off the boat; we know the songs, we dance to the tunes, we dress influenced by the stars, we follow their Instagram feeds, our karaoke sessions are Bollywood the theme, our conversations are lined with famous dialogues from Bollywood movies, we line up for miles outside theaters when a Rajni movie releases, we turn up in thousands when the stars visit to perform, we represent our Desiness through a lot of nuances borrowed from Bollywood. Bollywood is a big expression. Almost 2 billion people around the world get it.
Here is our recommendation list for the Christmas holidays. Whether you are a Bollywood fan or not, the quality and expression of this content will warm you this season.
  Number 10   Haq Se
Loosely based on  Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, the depiction of the lives of 4 sisters in Kashmir during the conditions it is in is a beautifully poignant story about the aspirations and ambitions of women and the society. A must watch for beautiful scenery and excellent performances by all actors. Starring Rajiv Khandelwal. Surveen Chawla, Simone Singh, directed by Ken Ghosh, Set in the turbulent terrorist infested Kashmir, the story revolves around the Mirza sisters. In Kashmir, where the society is conditioned to be very misogynistic and patriarchal. Women are suppressed and they can't voice their opinion or create their paths. This is the story of the women who dare to. Warm Kashmir colors are perfect for your holiday binge watching. View Trailer  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orP_-9rWWy8
 Streaming on Alt Balaji
  Number 9 Inside Edge
Inside Edge is the story of the Mumbai Mavericks, a T20 cricket franchise playing in the Powerplay League. ... almost a virtue, where sex, money, and power are mere means to an end, 2 seasons of this series are a treat to watch. Created by Pawan Anshuman, starring Richa Chadha, Vivek Oberoi, Angad Bedi and Aamir Bashir, it's a perfect holiday watch for cricket fans.

Number 8 Vir Das Jestination Unknown

  Number 7 Sacred Games
The hair-raising plot of India's first Netflix Original is one of the highly-raved shows. The riveting cat-and-mouse game is a mixture of amazing storytelling, a fluent narrative, and brilliant acting. Sacred Games has the brilliant Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing an evil gangster and Saif Ali Khan as a troubled cop and Radhika Apte plays an intelligence officer, SG is directed by the impeccable Anurag Kashyap. PS : Not a family watch though but bingable for the holidays.

   Number 6 Powder
Powder is one of those underrated show which more than nine years old and a bit ahead of its time. The show aired on Sony TV in 2010 and went off the air due to poor ratings. Thankfully, Netflix resurrected it from the dusty corners and now offers it to everyone. The show follows a team of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officers as they team up to arrest a group of drug traffickers, peddlers, and smugglers. Sure, it's nothing like Narcos, but if you like those kinds of drug crime dramas, then it might be the one for you. Interestingly, this show premiered about five years before Narcos went on air.
The show brings together an amazing cast comprising of Pankaj Tripathi, Rasika Dugal, Manish Choudhary, and Geetika Tyagi.
Quite Bingable for the holidays

Number 4  Yeh Rishtey hain Pyar Ke
Out of all the sitcoms airing on Indian Television, we love and recommend this show for holiday binge-watching. Its young, uninhibited and has a surprising storyline of a young couple and an evil mom, yet there is no regular drama in dealing with the situation. The actors are well-chosen and a few episodes into the show, you will fall in love with the characters and believe their love story. You will cry with them, you will laugh with them and put on loop their beautiful moments. This is not your traditional desi serial so be prepared for a genuine breath of fresh air.
In short, you will want to fall into the love they share. Directed by Ashish Shrivastava, produced by Rajan Shahi at Directorskutproduction; the almost 200 episodes already streaming on hotstar could be your romantic holiday season binge. The actors Shaheer Sheikh, Rhea Sharma and Ritvick Arora are well cast and carry the show on their able shoulders. A must romantic see.

 Number 3 Breathe
Breathe has undoubtedly taken the Indian storytelling to another level. The plot revolves around the lives of ordinary men who are faced with unexpected situations.
Kabir Sawant, a talented officer of the criminal division, assembles the missing pieces of unrelated deaths, all of which lead him to a common suspect. It is exciting to watch how the drama unfolds between the suspect who is trying to save his dying son and the officer who is adamant to impart justice. Starring R. Madhavan, Amit Sadh, Sapna Pabbi
Produced by Vikram Malhotra .  Completely Bingable.

  Number 2 Delhi Crime
Depicting the most notorious rape case in India, Delhi Crime has won major critical acclaim since it aired the first season. Its second season has also been announced after the success of the first.
It stars Shefali Shah, Adil Hussain, Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang, and many other brilliant actors. The series is based on the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, which is widely known as the Nirbhaya case. A 23-year-old girl and her male friend were beaten up and brutally assaulted in a running bus near Munirka in New Delhi while they were going home after catching a movie.
The girl was gang-raped and assaulted with an iron rod, following which the pair was thrown naked and injured on the road, after which the culprits tried to run them over with the bus. Delhi Crime tells the story from the perspective of the Delhi Police and how they dealt with what emerged as the most brutal rape case ever seen in India.
This is the most riveting depiction of the horror of rape and the aftermath.

Number 1 The Family Man

If you haven’t seen Spyder, and want no spoilers before you see it, watch this spoiler free review of the film I recorded moments after seeing it.
I warned you ….. SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!!  (but not the whole plot)
The first thing you should know is that I am a Mahesh Babu fan.  I’ve seen several of his films, and my favorites are probably Athadu (killer disarmed by love!) and Pokiri.  Unfortunately, my first Mahesh Babu film in the theater was last year’s flop Brahmatsovam.   It’s been a long wait for the next Mahesh film, over a year.  I think he took the lessons from that flop, and hooked up with a quality director.  My friend Kartik even sent me a quote from Mahesh about that flop:
Tumblr media
So anticipation has been sky high for this film Spyder.  Expectations, too.  I felt it was a decent film.  Not perfect, but it had some notable sequences that were unique and something fresh I had not seen before.
I walked out of the theater satisfied, and I was surprised that several young men who cared enough to come to the very first 2 p.m. show were disappointed.  Maybe the hype was so high nothing would have been enough.  They said the second half was not a “practical” plot.  I think they wanted a more grounded story, like Pokiri or Athadu.  From the trailer we could see there would be huge boulder rolling down a street crushing cars — and that sequence was certainly in the film.  The last half felt almost like a disaster movie or a superhero film with buildings collapsing and villains wanting to crush people with huge boulders!  So, not realistic, but it didn’t bother me one bit.
Are all those village Telugu dramas with machete fights with one hero fighting 20 men realistic either?
AR Murugadoss set up a tight cat and mouse thriller between Mahesh and our big villain.  Mahesh is some sort of spy analyst.  I got the sense he worked in the equivalent of the Indian FBI.  He’s monitoring phone conversations ostensibly looking for terrorists and the like, but almost like Minority Report he prides himself on preventing crimes before they happen based on something he’s overheard.  He saves a young girl from being robbed and dishonored by a goon who has convinced her he’s going to marry her out of town.
But then a girl he overhears being scared in an empty house is murdered savagely, along with the woman cop he dispatched to check on her.  And that sends Mahesh into a crisis, and then ultimately on a solo quest to find their killer.
Mahesh Babu, Rakul Preet Singh @ Spyder Shooting Spot Images
In the first half, we get a tiny little romance track with the adorable Rakul Preet Singh. He overhears her discussing wanting a “blind date” and I think wanting a friends with benefits situation (something that maybe didn’t translate fully in the subtitles).  He stalks her a bit, and she confronts him on it.  But she eventually agrees if he’s not in love with her it will be okay for them to go out.  There is a hilarious scene where she tries to explain this to Mahesh’s mother — who warns Rakul Mahesh is shy, just like his father.  “It took four years of marriage for my son to be born!”  LOL
Tumblr media
There are a few flight of fantasy songs that show their feelings for each other, and a bit of their relationship.  The first song, Boom Boom, I liked much better in the film, than in the teaser snippets we saw.   That’s the first song, and for some reason has all white girl back up dancers!
Tumblr media
When Mahesh goes on a hunt for the killer, he uses a viral video to try to find someone who’s seen him.  This film has a lot of cool use of technology, with scenes of Mahesh monitoring real time cell phone calls, searching through CCTV footage and the like.  It was all very clever, and kind of scary to think how much info these agencies can gather.  There’s a speech in the beginning that the analysts in Mahesh’s office are not to monitor calls for personal reasons, but obviously Mahesh breaks that by listening in and researching Rakul!
The back story of the villain was super creepy and really unique.  I’ve never seen anything like it, as an origin for a sociopath serial killer.  While other reviewers may quibble that this took time away from the main story and slowed down the film, I really liked this segment of the movie.  That kid was a good actor — good at being super creepy and evil!!
There are actually two villains.  Won’t spoiler why, but they were both good.  Bharat is one, but the big bad is played by S. J. Surya.  He was mostly excellent playing this sociopath killer.  There was on interrogation scene where he really gets crazy and it was over the top for me, but especially this scene above with the mask.  Whew!  So good at being evil.
At times in the second half, it felt like he was becoming an over sized super villain like in a comic book movie, though.  Maybe that’s what those young men at my screening were complaining about.  That and the rolling boulder of doom.
The first half of the film was really good, but there were some logical misses in the plot of the second half.  Rakul not telling Mahesh something crucial because she was in a snit with him was egregious.  Really?  You’re not going to help catch the murderer because you’re mad at your boyfriend?  And there were times Mahesh went alone into a situation when it would have been more realistic if he’d had back up.
There was one segment where he fooled a bunch of ladies who were watching a soap into helping him find a fugitive.  It went on for a long stretch and was pretty over the top, too.  But I do have to acknowledge to Mr. Murugadoss that I have never seen the like!
The CGI in a couple of crucial action scenes was not seamless, but I found the roller coaster fight scene incredible anyway.  Just the concept of it alone!  We get a snippet in the trailer but it was really something to see.  The ending has a building collapsing as Mahesh tries to save people.  That was another part that felt like this was a disaster movie rather than a grounded thriller.  But, still, the film didn’t end with the cliched fight sequence in an abandoned factory.
Mahesh has a preachy speech at the end about humanity and helping others without expecting rewards.  A bit long, and kind of a weird note to end the film on.
There’s also some plot holes as to how Mahesh is just going rogue in his job.  He doesn’t follow privacy rules AT ALL and gets all his buddies to just give him info for his solo investigation.  He’s working around the police and just ignoring their efforts.  He also kills one guy in front of a huge crowd, and seemingly has no repercussions at work or otherwise  It was definitely a take the law into your own hands kind of movie.  I was disturbed at that cold killing scene.  Mahesh’s character just has his own morality compass.  He’s the hero, so he’s always right.  Definitely not an examination of two sides like Vikram Vedha.
The background score by Harris Jayaraj was incredible.  It kept the tension taught throughout the film.  I have an issue with thrillers that don’t have good enough music to set the mood (Ahem, Malayalam thrillers….),  This score was a standout.
For the most part, AR Murugadoss has given us an exciting thriller with a great villain.  Mahesh just looks so cool in all the action scenes.  He has a couple of great fight segments.  Even the Boom Boom dance number sort of had fight choreography.  I liked Mahesh and Rakul’s chemistry in the songs and their sweet romance, although that isn’t the thrust of the film.  It’s mainly there as some nice comic relief from the darkness in the rest of the film.
Mahesh reacts emotionally to the death of the young girl and police officer in the first part of the film, but other than that does not show the range of emotion that he has in other films.  It wasn’t there in the script for him to do.  The film did have more of a story than a strictly action film like Vivegam, but didn’t pack the emotional punch I usually like in Telugu films.  Still, I left satisfied that I’d had a good rollercoaster ride of my own.
Another unique aspect to the film is that it was filmed in Telugu AND Tamil.  Mahesh is fluent in both languages, so they filmed each scene twice!  I attended the Telugu version (with subtitles, of course.)

WINNERS OF THE FILMFARE AWARDS 2019 Winners of the 64th Filmfare Awards were announced at Jio Garden, BKC, Mumbai on 23rd March 2019.Here's the complete winners list of 64th Filmfare Awards 2019: Main Award Winners BEST FILM - RAAZI Raazi is a well-made spy film brimming with patriotic fervour. The 1971 war serves as the backdrop of this spy thriller. It remains true to the period details as well. CRITICS BEST FILM - ANDHADHUN Andhadhun will remind you of American pulp movies, where every character is bent and serves his or her own agendas. The film offers homage to the Hindi film music of the ‘70s as well, what with Ayushmann playing many hit tunes of the era on his piano. BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE (MALE) - RANBIR KAPOOR Movie - SANJU For the sake of his role, Ranbir somehow convinced himself that he’s actually Sanjay Dutt -- and hence the physical transformations and the voice modulations look so convincing as they contain part of Dutt’s soul. CRITICS BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE (MALE) - AYUSHMANN KHURRANA Movie - ANDHADHUN Ayushmann Khurrana is a steal as the piano player with a kink. His switches from being blind to being normal are spot on and later, his helplessness and rage at being subjected to the world's unfairness is apt too. BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE (FEMALE) - ALIA BHATT Movie - RAAZI Alia is the soul of the film. You can feel the strain she undergoes of being a field agent, laying aside all humane feelings and knowing well she may have to pay the ultimate sacrifice. CRITICS BEST ACTOR IN LEADING ROLE (FEMALE) - NEENA GUPTA Movie - BADHAAI HO Neena Gupta is such a natural you feel she's actually pregnant. She glows at getting another chance to play mother and just lets life take over. Her reaction scenes with Gajraj Rao (and indeed with everyone else) are on point. BEST DIRECTOR - MEGHNA GULZAR Movie - RAAZI She directed her first film, Filhaal, in 2002. The film centered around surrogacy. Her second movie was Just Married in 2007. Her third feature talvar (2015), based on the Aarushi Talwar murder case won much critical acclaim. Raazi is her most successful film commercially as well as critically. BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE (MALE) - GAJRAJ RAO Movie - BADHAAI HO The way Gajraj Rao very Rowan Atkinson like reacts to everything happening around him is a delightful act indeed. Mr Bean would be proud. BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE (FEMALE) - SUREKHA SIKHRI Movie - BADHAAI HO Surekha Sikri is delightful as the vitriolic mother-in-law who takes up for her bahu at a family wedding when the he relatives corner her for her supposed 'indecent’ behaviour. BEST MUSIC ALBUM - SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI Movie - PADMAAVAT The film’s music was inspired by Rajasthani folk and had classical elements as well. The songs paid homage to love, to romance in all its forms. Ghoomar and Binte dil stood out. BEST LYRICS - GULZAR Movie - RAAZI Song - Ae Watan It isn’t easy to create an authentic patriotic song but to his credit not only Gulzar create one, he succeeds in turning it into a ghazal-qawwali fusion as well. And he does it all without resorting to jingoism. BEST PLAYBACK SINGER (MALE) - ARIJIT SINGH Movie - RAAZI Song - Aye Watan Arijit Singh’s rendition of this patriotic song brings out strong feelings of love for one’s country but in an understated way, going against the grain of such anthems. BEST PLAYBACK SINGER (FEMALE) - SHREYA GHOSHAL Movie - PADMAAVAT Song - Ghoomar Ghoomar is a riot of emotions and Shreya renders them all bang on. It’s a song both about celebration and dance and has a touch of Rajasthani folk in it and Shreya captures it all perfectly. PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD FOR BEST SHORT FILM - PLUS MINUS Dimpy, a young, spunky woman, is fed-up of her husband Jeet’s dominating, possessive mother. So much so, that she boards the Hoshiarpur Express at Delhi Station, late one night, planning to go to her marital home in Kapurthala, pick her stuff up and return to her father’s home in Delhi. En route, a conversation with the young 22-year old co-passenger who shares the aisle berth of the AC II Tier compartment leads her to change the way she has been looking at Life. Then, she learns the truth about the young Army man who travelled with her and taught her that where there is Love and Understanding, there is always Acceptance. BEST SHORT FILM IN FICTION - ROGAN JOSH Rogan Josh, set in the aftermath of 26/11 attacks. The dinner table conversation meanders to the shared experience of 26/11 and questions the quality of their existence after the life changing event. BEST SHORT FILM IN NON FICTION - THE SOCCER CITY This documentary sheds light on the feisty football journey of a small city, Kolhapur. This is a story of how a game played barefoot in the pockets of Kolhapur a century ago now draws more than 25,000 spectators for its local games. The passion for football here once extended beyond the ground, and guarded the unity among the people of this city. Be it playing with the Polish refugees after World War 2 or challenging the British troops for a game in 1936, Kolhapur's people have always had a hunger for football. This is an ode to the unsung history of Kolhapur's football, with the hope that if revered at a national level, it will do wonders for the social harmony and integration of the country as it once did for the city. BEST ACTOR FEMALE SHORT FILM - KIRTI KULHARI Movie - MAYA Maya wants to get married and has found the perfect match in Raunak but there is small hitch, her mother Meera whom she wants to stay with even after she is married. BEST SCREENPLAY - SRIRAM RAGHAVAN, ARIJIT BISWAS, POOJA LADHA SURTI, YOGESH CHANDEKAR, HEMANTH RAO Movie - ANDHADHUN Sriram Raghavan and his writing team has turned Andhadhun into a delightfully dark comedy which kind of grabs you by the jugular in the first frame itself and refuses to let go. BEST DIALOGUE - AKSHAT GHILDIAL Movie - BADHAAI HO It's the little humorous punchlines that make or break a comedy and Akshay has peppered the dialogue with liberal amounts of wit. BEST COSTUME - SHEETAL SHARMA Movie - MANTO Manto’s story begins in pre-Partition Mumbai and ends in Pakistan and the film never sets a foot wrong in bringing to life the prevalent clothing choices of the era, not only for the central characters but also for the crowd scenes as well. BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN - NITIN ZIHANI CHOUDHARY, RAKESH YADAV Movie - TUMBBAD The film is set in a small hamlet, and it's story takes us to a bygone era. The props, vehicles, the architecture look and feel authentic. BEST SOUND DESIGN - KUNAL SHARMA Movie - TUMBBAD It's a horror film at one level but also a coming-of-age story at another and the he sound design incorporates both elements. BEST VFX - RED CHILLIES VFX Movie - ZERO The film is a VFX extravaganza alright. The various NASA sequences, especially the zero gravity scenes are truly out of this world.

#ThrowbackThursday Posting the scan of an old sketch I did. This is a sketch of 'Chiyaan' Vikram from the Gautham Menon movie "Dhruva Natchathiram". I did this drawing back in January 2017 based on the teaser, and this drawing was on display at the #ArtConf art exhibition in May 2017 as well. At that time I scanned this drawing but didn't post it here. Today, @prudhvichowdary shared the latest trailer of this movie on Facebook and so I thought I'd post this. The movie was supposed to be released in 2017 but I guess there was a change of crew and cast as well during production, and it's now being released in 2018. I hope I'll get to see the movie soon! It's a stylish spy thriller, something that Gautham Menon is awesome at. And with an amazing actor like Vikram in the lead, it's bound to be good. #dailymoviesketch #dhruvanatchathiram #chiyaanvikram #gauthammenon #pencilart (at Secunderabad)

You don’t need to be a genius to make a bad movie. Literally anyone can do it. But it’s a challenge to make a movie so bad that it transcends into greatness. Making a good “bad” movie is nothing less than an art form. We don’t know if the makers of these movies actually intended to make them this way or it was completely unintentional. Nonetheless, we found these movies so bad that they actually end up being a fun watch. So, we list down Bollywood films so bad that they will have you in splits. Read on…
Tumblr media
1.Mission Istaanbul : Darr Ke Aage Jeet Hai
Mission Istaanbul had a star cast of Vivek Oberoi, Sunil Shetty, Zayed Khan, and Shriya Saran. In the film, we see Sagar (Zayed Khan), a journalist who out of nowhere gets an offer to head a controversial news station by its owner Owais Husain (Sanjay Dutt). The news channel named “Al-Johra” is actually a mask for many terrorist activities and believe it or not you will see terrorists walking in and out of the news channel’s building like nobody’s business. Sagar accepts the offer initially because of the many perks that came with the job. But, when he decides to quit it is brought to his attention by a Turkish commando Rizwan Khan (Vivek Oberoi), that others who have quit had been killed for knowing too much. This movie was filled with products placement and mostly we see the two heroes chugging cans of mountain dew which also explains the unique choice for the title.
Tumblr media
2.Tarzan: The Wonder Car In this film, we see Deven Chaudhary (Ajay Devgn), who is a talented car designer. Once he approaches a firm with his designs and even though the partners of the company like his designs, they reject him at the time only to kill him by drowning him in his own car and stealing his designs later. But, guess what? The story doesn’t end here. Many years down the line, Deven’s son, Raj (Vatsal Seth) ends up finding the car in which his father was drowned in. Raj gives the car a complete makeover. Once the car is made again, Deven’s soul somehow makes its way into it. And then it was pay back time! So, whenever Raj was sleeping or occupied with something else, the car (who actually was Deven) would just sneak out under his nose and would go on kill one of the partners who killed his father. We think the best performer in the film deservedly had to be the car… Which says a lot about the acting in the film.

3. Awwal Number
In Awwal Number, we see Ronny (Aditya Pancholi), a star cricketer who lets his ego takeover him which also effects his performance in the game. In comes Sunny (Aamir Khan), a talented young cricketer who instantly takes Ronny’s spot in the team. So, just like how cricketers behave when they are dropped, Ronny (with the help of a terrorist organisation) goes ahead and plants a bomb in the stadium with 50,000 people watching the game. The saviour DIG Vikram Singh (Dev Anand) comes to everyone’s rescue. Vikram Singh who is also Ronny’s elder brother uses everything from truth serums to torture to his masterful skills of seduction to get to the bottom of the case. It seems that India needing some 30 odd runs in the last few overs wasn’t exciting enough of a cliffhanger for the makers so they went ahead and threw in a helicopter chasing sequence as well. This film also has a scene where they show a picture of Cindy Crawford with a garland over it. The reason being that the makers needed a picture of someone since they wanted to show that Dev Anand and Aditya Pancholi’s stepmom who passed away.
Tumblr media
4. Gunda
The essence of Gunda lies in its unique characters. First we have a gangster named Bulla (Mukesh Rishi), who goes around saying his signature line which is, “Mera Naam Hai Bulla… Main Rakhta Hoon Khulla.” Next, we have Chutiya (Shakti Kapoor), Bulla’s impotent brother who is kept alive through a steady supply of “London ki sex ki goliyan” or also known as “Vitamin Sex”. In the film, Bulla vows to take revenge from Shankar (Mithun), since he was the reason behind Bulla’s right hand man Pote’s arrest (Mohan Joshi), who also has a signature line of his own which says “Mera Naam Hai Pote… Jo Apne Baap Ke Bhi Naheen Hote.” Bulla manages to murder Shankar’s sister and his father after which Shankar ends up killing Bulla. You must have figured the plot of the film is wafer thin but dialogues like “Chatri Hoti Hai Kholne Keliye Aur Ladki Hoti Hai Chedne Ke Liye” do manage to keep it alive.

5.Karzzzz
Firstly, we just wanted to inform everyone that the four z’s in the title isn’t a typo but the makers have actually done it for a reason. Why you ask? Well, only they know the answer to that. So, this film was actually a remake of Rishi Kapoor’s iconic film Karz (1980). The story of the film too is mostly the same as the original but with a ton of overacting. And if you felt that the film lacked any substance in the acting department you are mistaken. The songs in the film (something for which the original film is still remembered for) are equally bad if not worse. Song’s with the titles like Tandoori Nights and Dhoom Tere Ishq Ki can give you an idea for what you can expect expect from this film.
Tumblr media
6. Prem Aggan
What do you expect when a relatively poor man’s son falls in love with a rich man’s daughter in a Bollywood film. Clashes, complex dialogues on the iniquity of society and traditions. Prem Again lives up to all that and much more! Prem Aggan was possibly one of the worst debuts that anyone could have in Bollywood. And the thing is that Fardeen Khan isn’t the biggest reason for which the film turned out to be so bad… it all comes down to lazy writing. So, in the film we see Sapna (Meghna Kothari) a daughter of a wealthy businessman. She falls in love with Suraj (Fardeen Khan), who is the son of an Army captain and plays in an orchestra to earn his living. When Sapna introduces Suraj to her father, he doesn’t take it to well since he has already made plans about her marriage with someone else and obviously because Suraj isn’t rich. So, the father forms a plan along with Sapna’s brother and they end up beating Suraj and take Sapna along with her abroad hoping that she will forget about him eventually. But our hero still doesn’t loose hope. He will do anything to get back to Sapna! Even if it means selling his most prized possession… his motorcycle. Sapna on the other hand has turned into (almost) an alcoholic since she is away from her beloved. The rest of the film is just filled with Bollywood cliches, we see Suraj reaching to Sapna and making her free from her evil fiancé and winning the heart of her father in the process.
The highlight of the film has to be when Sapna and Suraj are shown together and Sapna tells Suraj, “Suraj, Mujhe Yeh Haseen Dard De Do.” No points for guessing which “Haseen Dard” she is talking about!

7. Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani
Jaani Dushman : Ek Anokhi Kahani (more like torture) was a film that actually had a lot of expectations riding on it before its release. Mainly due to a star studded cast which comprised of actors like Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Manisha Koirala, Aditya Pancholi, Arshad Warsi, Sharad Kapoor, Aftab Shivdasani and for some unknown reason Sonu Nigam. At the start of the film, we see Manisha Koirala taking a shower along with her friend with make up on (No, we’re not kidding). Later, when she is alone in the room, two of her “friends” break inside with the intention of raping her. And here we see the entry of Sunny Deol, who comes in and saves the day. Interestingly, when the principal finds out about what is happening in his college, instead of rusticating the culprits he tells them to go apologise to the girl they just raped. When they show up to ask for forgiveness, Divya (Manisha Koirala) is encouraged by her friends that she should forgive them as well. It’s like nobody in the film understands that even an attempt at rape is a SERIOUS crime! Another thing you notice in the film is the bombardment of product placements. Literally every other scene has a brand name being mentioned for no apparent reason. Jaani Dushman manages to take product placement even further, as in one scene, Akshay Kumar is shown to be watching a show on television with the camera fixed on the frame of the TV. So, in the show, the host announces that they will be taking a commercial break and during the entire commercial the camera is still fixed in front of the TV. Talk about being subtle. And let’s not even go to the bad VFX.
Tumblr media
8. Prince
We have seen plenty of spy films that have ended up being successful franchises in the past years, The Mission Impossible series, The Bourne series to name a few. Prince makes a failed attempt at trying to recreate the magic of these spy thrillers. Prince (Vivek Oberoi) is a spy who has no memory about his past. In his quest to find answers, he discovers his name is Prince, he used to work for a man named Sarang (Isaiah) and his girlfriend’s name is Maya (Aruna Shields). Prince is being chased by the biggest criminal agencies in the world since only he knows the whereabouts of a heist that just took place. As the story moves forward, Prince finds out that there is some chip in his brain that makes him forget everything whenever it is activated. And the one behind this whole mess was his boss Sarang. Prince is able to tack down Sarang and gets hold of the coin to deactivate the chip along with killing him in the process. To sum it up, there is no story to begin with and with times it is clearly evident that the actions are as well mindless and in most places unneeded.
There are a million plot holes but no need to pick those as after about 20 minutes in the film you will understand that the producers have only paid for the action sequences and the worst part is the action sequences are not even original. Almost every action scene in the movie is picked out from a popular Hollywood film and it is painfully obvious the way they have executed it. One thing that the film does get right is the casting especially of Vivek Oberoi. Vivek Oberoi doesn’t have much acting in the film besides looking lost and confused which he manages to do extremely well!
Tumblr media
9.Players
Players was “inspired” by Italian Job (2003) which wasn’t a masterpiece on its own but somehow they managed to make it a 100 times worse. The reason being that Abbas Mustan trying too hard in making this movie their own. Since this is Bollywood, a thief cannot be a thief just for the thrill of it or his greed for money. There has to be a noble cause for which he is doing it. And in Players we have the aim of making the largest orphanage in the world. While the original version of the film had crisp dialogues and likeable characters, the Indian version had an overdose of emotions and characters like Spyder (Neil Nitin Mukesh) who is constantly flitting with his Artificial Home Intelligence system named “Baby”. The entire cast of the film was a big let down and failed to impress in their roles. Bobby Deol is the guy you relate too. He wears a pained expression throughout. It’s the same look you have at the end of this film.
Tumblr media
10. Aag
Ram Gopal Varma’s Aag was (apparently) an adaptation of the 1975 classic Sholay. But it had no resemblance with the film whatsoever. In Aag, the character of Jai, who’s called Heerendra is played by Ajay Devgan and Veeru who is called Raj is played by Prashant Raj Sachdev. The heroes in this film had an insane ability to dodge bullets. In a scene, they are seen taking on a group of men who are firing at them with AK-47 assault riffles but they conveniently defeat them without getting a single bullet hitting them. This scene alone literally made movies like Rambo look mundane.
Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of a psycho villain, Babban to the best (Probably the only 40 mins of the reel that shouldn’t be burnt). If you somehow could remove the rest of the movie and just watch Amitabh play around with his character, it would still be worth a watch
Tumblr media
11.Drona
Drona was another failed attempt at the superhero genre by Bollywood. Every aspect of the film was extremely disappointing. The excessive use of slow motion in the film didn’t do it any favours either. It became so frequent it was predictable. Every time the hero appears, cue slow motion and take several shots from every angle of the hero with his sword as he is killing the bad boys. Even the script of the film didn’t feel like a finished product since it was continuously shifting to different time spans with sudden jumps ignoring any continuity.
