To spaghetti-hero fanatics, Franco Nero is as much of a face of the broader western genre as Clint Eastwood and John Wayne are. While still averaging almost 5 movies a year in the last decade alone, he got to be most popular in Italy in the 60s and 70s, playing in some defining spaghetti-westerns directed by some of the greats: Sergio Corbucci’s Vamos A Matar, Compañeros is one of those movies, it’s as spaghetti as a western can get, exactly how I like them.
In Compañeros, Nero plays the part of a cool Swede called Yodlaf, or Penguin, as his involuntary brother in arms Vasco (Tomas Milian) prefers to call him. They have been sent by Mexican revolutionist General Mongo (José Bóldalo) to break Xantos (Fernando Rey), another revolutionist, but who favors peace over violence, out of a U.S. jail, since he is the only one who knows the secret code to a vault containing a whole lot of money.
Supported by the fantastic theme song by Ennio Morricone, we see a beautiful young woman running down the streets looking for two men who are having an intense standoff in the very first scene. The mood definitely is set by Corbucci, who seldomly slows down the pace (even speeds it up by using some fast editing techniques) he, and an entire cult following, is comfortable with. Contrary to his American peers, Corbucci uses violence in a very different manner. His violent scenes are already tenseful, while in classical American westerns the more violent sequences and shootouts are usually building up towards. There is something violent in almost every scene, and rarely does Corbucci deliver scenes that are not exciting.
Compañeros is a beautiful spaghetti (Zapata) western, featuring an exciting plot (which is a little cartoonishly over-ambitious at intervals) and a great cast. Milian and Nero are delivering, it’s only a shame that Bóldalo’s Mongo is kind of a doofus, considering he is such a vital, yet not featured greatly, character. Rey’s Xantos is the overtly political character who almost lets the movie drown in no-gun morals as it nears the finale, but luckily, Corbucci knows what his audience wants to see.
