Mech Pilot Story, part 1

All the girlies losing their shit over emaciated overstimulated barely-human mech pilots sparked something in me, so I'm back in the game. Let me know what you think, it's only gonna get worse (>:3c) from here.

INITIALIZING…

Every morning at exactly 0500, your consciousness respawns in a standing closet slash debridement chamber, usually the same one memory claims you entered 7 hours ago. A pilot’s downtime¹ consists of automated scans to check the repair state of its vessel’s various components, automatically dismantling those damaged beyond operational parameters, and grafting on replacements. Lengthier installations may require maintenance of consciousness for real-time feedback², but if a contract goes well and no major injuries are sustained, this is the only time you’re free to not think.

The sleep timer expires.

Released from the amniotic haze of stabilizing compounds, a sheet of plastic catches you, a hole stamped out of the facial region as a momentary blast of volcanic air seals the rest tight against your vessel. Despite the lingering narcotics, the process is painful, but the sight of undressed vessels is known to disturb the entry-levels, and allowing one to dress itself costs time which is money which is waste which is unacceptable. So they shrink-wrap you like an old cassette as you stumble back into the fray.

You are Antrum-Class Drone Pilot, designator V1C.

They’re letting you eat with the grounds again this season. A well-meaning reformist exec³ argued that the morale boost from pseudosocialization would increase uptime enough to offset the inefficiency of analog consumables. This pitch initially failed to wow the rest of the c-suite; the verdict was only recently appealed, after a self-automated virus scan on another ship ended up cutting their workforce by 80%⁴.

A pilot⁵ program was quickly implemented, but the compulsory executive recycling has long since taken place, organs refurbished and shuffled back into the wider supply, carcass dumped like any other unusable meat.

Mess hall. Daylight settings. Futuristic holo-steam trays⁶. A jingle over the comms reminds you that you're family and are loved. The food isn’t good and it never was, it’s just a pretense; if they have to keep treating you like them, they’ll let us keep a bit of our digestive system⁷. It’s equalizing; those who can’t afford the time off to manually consume usually have the whole thing pulled by the start of year two, the convenience fee adding another five to their metacontract.

Vessel 1-C finds an open seat and begins ingestion. It seemingly pulls from a different animation pool than the grounds; they exhibit group behaviors, conversing and gesturing and otherwise wallowing in the bounty of inefficiency they don't know they're immersed in. V1C opens jaw places matter in mouth closes jaw swallows repeats staring dead ahead all the while. You talk and eat out of the same hole; what sort of cruel joke is it that you're only allowed to do both at once?

Entering the galley automatically starts the countdown, and every second past the allotted 10 minutes is extraneous wear and will be docked from your pay. So eat quick like a good little soldier, then it’s back down the hall, side stairwell because the elevator’s been under a ransomware attack for months now⁸, fifth deck, past the armory⁹, until you arrive at the mech bays. A ground’s still hosing down the cockpits with disinfectant, chemical runoff oozing sickly green through the machines’ cracks and the floor grates and into the resanitizing pool from which he pumps.

V1C cannot afford to pay him any mind as it approaches the waste chute and pukes, wiping marbled ichor and carbpaste from its segmented lips with a sealed hand before the shrink wrap is removed and sent down to the incinerators too. Any foreign material inside the body is a vector for contamination; viruses of both analog and digital varieties will nucleate in the organic mass rotting in the dead end of your intestine and it only gets worse the further along it gets so you have to remove it as soon as you’re unpresentable.

It's a simple fact of science that no amount of politically-correct advocacy can change; you get what you need more directly from working in the machine, no need for archaic standards like calories.

Is it out of your system? Good. Bow your head¹⁰ as the needle clicks into the port on the back of your neck. A delicious cocktail of sedatives, psychotropics, yoga mat chemicals floods your neurons, dosed according to a constantly fluctuating formula using inputs pushed from the biometric harvesters they’d implanted with the regularity of streetlights along your body’s major transitways. Grounds only know a taste of this, their ration of coffee and antidepressants a childlike imitation of the shit they pump into you before each mission, like artificial blood, or embalming fluid.

Ice in your arteries, trying to claw its way out, but the limb’s grasp on your nape remains measured, pincer grip lifting you over the catwalk into your assigned cockpit. The seat flexes like a ladder of snakes, contouring to your precisely specced vessel, safety harnesses slither from their ports, crisscrossing your chest and sinking into your skin¹¹ to secure you in the cockpit and maintain telemetry.

You are now clocked in and ready to get to work.

Your vessel’s sensations and warning signs are an even lower priority now as consciousness rising along the network of nerve plugins until it refocuses over a black void, a crude low-poly approximation of your ship and its immediate surroundings floating in the center of your vision, basic textures mapped onto vectors snapping to and fro. The vendor came in cheap by using generations-old imaging datasets; some swear by the minimal interface, wear it as a badge of pride when they win battles against a better-equipped foe.

A fellow pilot you’d done orientation with, a timid but kind boy before all those attributes got rerolled, was bisected by something from the blind spot that comprises the viewport’s back, not realizing he could change his viewpoint without repositioning his whole body. Human error, the trickiest kind of bug to fix. No recyclables were found.

The generative text is tricky to parse in its specifics (is that the name of the celestial body or the hostile faction? What’s the difference, anyway?), but the briefing suggests a fairly routine mission. CONTACT, CLEAR and SECURE are all bolded and occupy the same areas of the verbal heatmap as always.

Don’t get bogged down in formalities; you’re here to go somewhere, kill everything that objects to your presence, then wait among the freshly-reclassified combatants' corpses to be collected at the end of your shift. If you finish early, you’re free to engage low-power mode, repurposing the viewport to watch old cartoons or microtransact new skins for yourself using your premium currency salary.

There's not much else to do in that static image, wireframe behemoth idling among piles of jagged geometry.

Mech Pilot Story, part 2

I forgot how fun this whole "putting words out there" thing is. Infinite thanks to everyone who's read part I and encouraged me to keep going!

The commute isn’t too bad today.

V1C and two other Antrums are deployed within an hour of clock-in. The landing is remarkably smooth, desert sand cushioning their impact enough that it might not even require spinal recalibration¹, if everything else goes this well.

Heat level 3 planet². Ventilation kicks in; it’s meant for the machine, but right now the exhaust breeze feels nice against the sheen of synthetic sweat coating your husk.

“Hot enough for ya?” Great. R3V’s one of your wingmen. “Haha.”

“can it r3 focus on the contract” Familiar monotone from the back left³. V1C’s working memory is free enough to recognize it from previous missions; they don’t communicate outside work, but K4T seems competent enough.

An objective marker blinks in, 10 kilometers to the west. Auto-movement engaged. Take lead. You perceive a blocky approximation of your body, gliding over quilted textures along a predetermined path.

Sit up, stay tense, and soberly observe the show⁴.

NEGATIVE FEEDBACK

Occasionally you’ll pass the same rock, but it might be on the left or right, the sprite appearing in the distance and blooming into a model as you approach before being culled out of existence as soon as it leaves your field of view.

The sand texture scrolls by in a beige blur you can’t disable, but the skybox is void black; not a cloud or star or even a gradient interrupting the faint glow along the edges of the geometry, reflecting back like an infinite hall of mirrors.

Something’s wrong, V1C notes, before declining to send the bug report.

The objective tab snaps open. NULLIFY ASSEMBLY. So 10 to 50 low-levels, unknown agitation level but always pitiful loadouts. Disperse mobs, along with their spawn points and any supplies left lying around⁵. Standard stuff.

The objective draws closer. Details start drawing themselves in; prosumer grade prefab housing stacked precariously over the edge of an open pit, paint sandblasted off the walls to reveal the mottled plastic patties underneath. Mining town?

Approaching the south border. Associates fan out, surrounding the mass of red dots just ahead on the radar. Weapons nominal, stamina bar full.

Maintaining 5 stars should be a breeze.

R3V’s feed crackles to life, before it can spam the airways with another inane observation it’s cut short in a cacophony of screeching alloys, ruptured hydraulics spurting like wounds. Part of the cockpit extends bizarrely, until the cell splits and a broken model tumbles from its corpus.

The weapon is quickly reduced to zero health but remains motionless upright, frozen as if unaware of its own death. V1C turns its attention to the crowd. A simulated voice imprints a message onto its HUD.

SITUATION ESCALATED. SWITCHING TO COMBAT FORMULA.

The drip-feed hooked into your spine doesn’t taste in the traditional sense, but something changes in the recipe and the effect is immediate. The scanlines bisecting you grow sharper, distortion increasing motion resumes as if in fast forward and everything comes like deja vu an alert from the side fire until it stops making sound HIT CONFIRMED - PLEASURE DOSE ADMINISTERED more mobs swarm your feet polygonal skeletons pull at cables jam trash into servos make space blade limb sweeps wide HITCONFIRMED attack dodge quickturn deploy fire HIT fire HIT firesgibbedbodiesscreamsandmorerecycledcrowdsfxbuzzthroughyouraudioinputyouleakontotheseatasyoucontinuepacifying-

Ragdollsasfarasthedistanceisdrawnthecombatsensorsilencedmomentarilyreturntobaselinethe seat below you registers as moist and unpleasant, the ground around you plastered in blood decals, enough to because your view to stutter briefly as it pans over them.

Nearby, K4T stands over a prefab building at armpit height. A cannon limb clips through the ceiling geometry and fires, feed freezing momentarily as sensory relays exceed maximum. When the hitch resolves, two walls of the building are extra-coarse sand⁶. The interior smolders, particle effects and burning mobs quickly fading under pixelated flames.

“main objectives done r1 deplatformed only mop-up remains ill take north” K4T’s already on the move. Always about that efficiency bonus.

Jazzy instrumentation somewhere distant as you sweep south. An occasional straggler charges at⁷ you but the lite turrets target those automatically so you can keep searching for larger clusters⁸. Union towns are the worst; most would’ve declared neutrality (sided with your interests) by now. Gotta hunt down every last one or else they’ll start repopulating as soon as they’re out of sight.

Noises from a structure slumped perilously onto another beside it. Can’t fit into that one, but the walls are thin enough to easily remove. Weapons retract, metal digits curl through the cornices and begin peeling the facade away-

All black. No geometry. Echoes of fire vignetted by pain. V1C’s virtual assistant⁹ produces a tooltip.

"TERMINAL DAMAGE SUSTAINED - CONTRACTOR DEACTIVATED”

Harsh feedback loops in the audio channel until it mercifully hangs and the line goes silent. You’re free to look around and explore the void but your body remains locked in place and nothing you do will change how the events before you will play out. Await bodily death wired into a weapon that will no longer sustain you.

The tooltip refreshes in the corner of your view.

HOLD STILL

Like you have a choice but to obey.

One by one, the snakes skitter back into their ports, weeping neural fluid. Vertices deform with each severed nerve, a checkerboard of inbuilt and external inputs, sound returns as blood roars in your ears and ash pinpricks burns in your sclera and every signal capable of conveying PAIN DANGER CAUTION AVOID RUN is screaming so at maximal volume.

Dangling from the ruined cockpit, coolants both organic and synthetic run in small streams down the seams of your bootlooping assemblage of broken parts. First person view: cerise sky weeping blood on the sand, untextured polygons sharp enough to mutilate right below, chest thrust forward, suspended by spread arms and legs still cocooned in sparkling biocord.

Something small with a knife at the edge of your view, snapping through your synapses strand by strand. A tipping point is reached as pain begins to drown in exhaustion. Your weight pulls the cables out or apart and you begin to fall.

Caught, just before the debris below can puncture your vessel. With a final tug, the last snake retreats. Something like words somewhere through the cacophony. You’re being dragged again, but the weapon is left behind. Broken vessel slowly tugged through a sea of fire and effluvium.

V1C’s eyes close to minimize negative inputs.

¹ New ones are cheap enough that they just replace and trash the old ones. The name stuck. Economies of scale!

² The heat level starts at 1 (HOT) and goes to 7 (INSTANT LOSS)

***Major update for nuBSOK users*** Happy Monday, all. A shiny new version of nuBSOK with a couple of major changes. • Added support for SynapticSim's nuAM across all categories because Julie asked me nicely. I really like the new underwear released for nuAM recently and hopefully adding it to nuBSOK will inspire more nuAM content. • Added a new category, Barbarian/Fantasy, across all bodyshapes. I create a *lot* of barbarian/fantasy content, and because the creators of mfBSOK no longer support it/ can't be contacted/won't fix its many issues, I'll be moving forward without it. Additionally, the folder includes my personal XML edits for the nuBSOK XML, in a folder cleverly labeled "XML". This isn't an "official" BSOK Editor update, but may be incorporated soon. Just go to the BSOK Editor root folder/Resources, and paste over the existing XML. (Note: Pick'N'Mix made it super easy to customize XML for the bodyshapes you use, but only Version 1.9 and higher support this).
