“If they can learn to say Tchaikovsky and Michaelangelo and Dostoyevsky, they can learn to say Uzoamaka.”
And y’all better learn to say Ncuti Gatwa too.
It’s quite easy actually (SHOO-tee GAH-twah)

Mami Wata at Fantasia 2023. It's All About Absolute Faith.
Playing at @fantasiafest is Mami Wata, and it's visually gorgeous on the big screen! This study about faith delves into exotic places in a classic #fable format.
Playing July 20 and 21st at Fantasia Film Festival 2023 For tickets, please visit this link. Beliefs in the goddess Mami Wata stretch from Senegal to as far as Zambia and in what C.J. “Fiery” Obasi’s crafts in his movie about her is not only mesmerising but also modern. She’s more than just another mermaid / patron deity to those cities that still venerate her to this day. Her ability to cure…

I understand the statement “If they can learn to say Tchaikovsky and Michaelangelo and Dostoyevsky, they can learn to say Uzoamaka.”
I understand that statement and what it's talking about and I fully agree with the message behind it and with the statement. If someone can learn to say all those then they can learn to say your name.
This post isn't disagreeing with the above statement
But here's the thing. This is embarrassing but I can't say two of the three names listed
I can pronounce Michaelangelo because he shares a name with a ninja turtle
I have been to concerts where Tchaikovsky has been played
I haven't read any Dostoyevsky but I have known of his writing for a good portion of my life
However, I have almost only encountered those names written down.
The few times I have heard the names pronounced I can recognise them and know who we are talking about...that doesn't mean I can say it
And it's like that with a lot of foreign words/names
I know what they mean but I haven't heard them said enough to be confident in how I'm pronouncing them. I also am just really bad at learning languages. I have audio processing issues so learning languages is really hard and honestly? I struggle with a lot of English words that again, I have almost only encountered in writing. Heck I have a lot of trouble using words I am familiar with because talking is hard! I really struggle with verbal communication at the best of times
And that is super embarrassing
And in the past I would have probably gotten defensive because I was embarrassed
But really if I don't know how to pronounce something or struggle with pronunciation that's not my fault but it's also my issue
So when I go somewhere and I need to say a word that I don't know how to pronounce or I hear a pronunciation and fail to replicate it, its embarrassing but I do what I can to try and say it
But I can't keep the mild panic at the incoming embarrassment off my face because I know I'm going to fuck up and I can't do anything about that except keep trying
It sucks
And it's not like I can say "oh no I'm not fucking up your name for racist reasons I'm just bad at words!" Because that would also make me a dick
And people deserve to have their names pronounced correctly and I hate that I am so bad at it
Again this isn't saying people should change their names to make it easier for for me I'm just saying it's embarrassing to be so bad at talking
I wish there was a magic way to make me less of an awkward mispronouncing mess
That's all
