The final whistle blows signalling that your hopes of winning the Champions League back-to-back have been destroyed.
This is your first major loss with the team with you only joining last season. It hurts just that bit more having never experienced what it feels like to come so heartbreakingly close to achieving greatness just to miss out in the end.
You along with most of your teammates are spread across the field, tears flowing heavily between everyone.
There was an expectation, not just from the media or fans but also the team that the trophy was in reach and that you all had what was needed to win it but clearly the sights were set a little too high and reality did not match the goals you had all set for yourself.
There will be many conversations from everyone about how it wasn’t just one person's fault and that at the end of the day the team just didn’t have what was needed to win. But even with that knowledge you can’t help but solely blame yourself and you are almost certainly sure that most of your teammates are doing the exact same thing.
Before you even realise it you are being picked up off the ground being engulfed in a comforting hug by your girlfriend, Aitana.
“You okay, mi amor?“ she whispers gently as you cry into her shoulder.
“No, but I think that’s to be expected. Did I spend too long wallowing on the ground?“ you ask back, knowing that is the reason she likely picked you up off the ground.
“Not too long but the sooner the proceedings are over the sooner we can get back to the hotel” she informs you, holding you close while you walk around congratulating Lyon players.
Once you lock eyes with a certain Lyon player you can’t help but break down even more.
“Mijn lieverd (My darling)” Daniëlle speaks to you just as softly as Aitana had when she got you off the ground, “You played ongelooflijk (incredible)” she pulls you into a tight hug, the grip that Aitana had on you loosens as you continue to cry into the arms of your national teammate who is like an older sister and mentor to you.
“Gefeliciteerd (Congratulations)” you speak through hiccuped tears.
“Don't worry about congratulations now (Y/N/N)” Daniëlle stops you from attempting to finish your sentence, instead guiding you back into the arms of Aitana who had stood back watching the entire situation unfold, not understanding much of the conversation between the Dutch and English.
The medal ceremony is painful, collecting the sliver when you would obviously much rather be gold but you ensure to show appreciation for what you received. You muster up a smile when you receive your medal and ensure to applaud when the Lyon players receive their medals.
You don’t stick around too much longer, after watching the lifting of the trophy. While most of your teammates have some sort of family or friend to greet them, you know that no one has turned up to see you, making the loss just that little bit harder to deal with.
You make a beeline for the locker room, wanting to be ready to leave as soon as you possibly can, as you walk in your tears start to flow freely again and even more than before knowing that you no longer have to keep up appearances for the media and public and that you are now free to express your emotions freely.
By the time you have changed and began to pack up your stuff some other team members have started to make their way back into the locker room, most offer you a shoulder squeeze or a quick smile not bothering you much more than that.
Sitting at your locker crying you have never felt more desperately alone, you can’t help but think about the fact that everyone else at least has other people here to support them through the heartbreaking loss.
“Mi amor” Aitana squads in front of you, moving your hands away from your face so she can see you properly, as she does she notices that unlike most of your teammates the tears have not stopped for you. “What’s wrong? I know this is hard but there’s something else I can tell”
“It’s hard not having anyone here to, I wouldn’t really want anyone to have to see me lose but it would be nice to have that comfort of family and friends” you admit in a small voice, almost embarrassed that this is what your mind has chosen to focus on in the midst of the situation.
“We are all here for you, my family wanted to see you but I couldn’t find you and we are all your friends, we are all here for you. I could even go get Daan if you’d like?” Aitana speaks attentively, wanting to solve this issue for you as she can tell that it is tearing you up inside.
“No, no… I’m not going to ruin her celebrations because of this” you sigh.
“What can I do for you then?” Aitana asks, clearly not giving up on potentially making you feel better.
“Your kisses are all I need right now” you admit, while you are sad that you don’t have anyone else, knowing that Aitana will always be here for you makes you feel so much better.
“I think I can manage that” Aitana smiles, peppering kisses all around your face, forcing a giggle out of your lips with her childish behaviour.
“Thank you Tana” you pull Aitana into a tight hug, her returning it. The two of you sitting in that position for way too long but neither of you could care less, more than happy with the comforting embrace.
