2022 Retrospective: TV-Shows/Movies
I didn’t really watch any anime this year, so I took all the anime categories out of this retrospective, because I can’t just talk about Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man. So, instead, here are the 2022 shows/movies I watched quickly reviewed.
Zettai BL Naru Sekai vs Sekai BL Narutakunai ni Otoko/The Man Who Defies the World of BL Season 2
This show still is hilarious. I mean, sure, I was hoping for a bit more romance between Mobu and Kikuchi, because they are adorable, and I ship them so hard. But what we got was still good. The last episode of this season had me rolling in laughter and tears. The confession-scene in this show is one of my favourite BL scenes as of now and I rewatch it regularly. Now I only need a season 3 with some actual romance for Mobu and Kikuchi. Come on, don’t leave me hanging, please.
KinnPorsche the Series
Well, this is the big one. Mannner of Death walked, so that this show could run. Some of the scenes in this show are seriously close to pornographic. I still really enjoyed the show, though there were some moments where I thought that it dropped the plot. Mile and Apo are really great together though, so that doesn’t really matter. The fanfictions of this show are really great, and I hope to add some of my own in this new year (most likely not…). Though one thing that is a massive turn off for me is how the fandom baby meow meows Vegas and shits on Kinn. Like, why is there a “Kinn Apologist” tag? Do I really need to apologise for liking a fictional character who is supposed to be morally grey? No, I will not. Kinn is my favourite character, there, I said it. This show also has Jeff Satur in it which is always a plus. And this is also probably just the Ingredients fan in me talking, but wasn’t Gameplay supposed to play Porchay? Why isn’t he? I mean, Barcode is great as Porchay, but he and Jeff by far don’t have the same chemistry that Jeff and Gameplay have.
Old Fashioned Cupcake
Yeah, I think this is my favourite show of the year. The writing is amazing, the acting is fantastic, and the characters are great. The only problem I can see, is that there are only five episodes of this wholesome show. It tells you that even if you’re nearing 40 (which is apparently already considered old) you can always find yourself and that it’s never too late. Kouhei Takeda is absolutely stellar in this show. Funny thing about that is that I watched Kamen Rider Build in 2021, after watching Zettai BL 1 and now three of the main riders have starred in BL Shows and I can’t believe it’s a coincidence anymore.
Kei x Yaku
Another BL with Atushiro Inukai, who is on his steady way to become one of my favourite Japanese actors. It’s a mafia drama bromance, leaning more towards the mafia drama than the bromance. It’s basically Kinnporsche, but with more political intrigue and no porn. Well… on screen at least.
The Umbrella Academy Season 3
This whole season could have been solved in one episode if there were some communication. That’s the most I can say about the story. It’s good. I really liked this season. I really liked the Sparrows. Sloane is a cool character and I really liked Sparrow!Ben. He just such a petty gay throughout the entire season and I love it. The rest of the Sparrows were cool, though I would have loved to get some more development for them and not just meet them for three episodes. I’m really looking forward to the final season coming this year.
Sandman
Yes, this show is amazing, what else can I tell you? The characters are great, the writing is great, it’s a good adaption that uses it’s medium to its fullest. I mean, it’s written by Neil Gaiman, what more can we want, am I right?
Wednesday
Maybe Tim Burton is getting back on track. At least somewhat. There are parts of this show I really enjoy. Jenna Ortega is amazing as Wednesday and seeing her energy clash with Enid’s is one of the highlights of this show. They are cute and I ship them, and they should have been together, mostly because the rest of her love interests are boring guys. I really can’t imagine Wednesday with any guy. Or girl for that matter. I always thought she was Ace. But yeah, make them lesbians, Netflix. I also really like the aesthetic of this show. Though there is one aspect that I just can’t get behind: The rest of the Addams Family. Morticia as a character is fine, though she should have been played by Christina Ricci, it would have been a great nod. My problem mainly lies with Gomez. And no, it’s not because he’s not conventionally attractive. He’s just so slimy and pathetic and that’s not Gomez at all. He needs to be charming. Also, the Addams are not bad parents.
Usogui
I watched this movie on a 14-hour plane ride from Costa Rica back home, when I was unable to sleep. And for what it was, I really enjoyed it. When I got home, I googled the movie and found out it was a live action adaption of a manga. It didn’t dim my enjoyment. I watched the movie again with my sister just for this review and I have to say: For what it is, it’s not bad. It does condense about 100 chapters into two hours, so a lot of stuff gets lost. But, and this is something I can always kind off appreciate about Live Action Adaptions (except Death Note): Most of the time, they get you interested in the source material. I started reading the manga after watching the movie and I do not regret it. The manga is absolutely fantastic. Madarame Baku is one of my new favourite characters. And Ryusei Yokohama is a great actor to play him.

Usogui Live-action Project Also Gets Spin-off Web Drama Starring Hayato Sano & Mai Shiraishi
In addition to the feature film starring Ryusei Yokohama, the live-action adaptation project based on Toshio Sako's gambling-themed manga Usogui (The Lie Eater) will also get a four-episode spin-off web drama series starring Hayato Sano (Yu Ishigami in the Kaguya-sama: Love Is War live-action films) and Mai Shiraishi (ex-Nogizaka46 member).
Sano plays Takaomi Kaji, a young man who changes his debt-ridden life and rises through the ranks of the underworld after meeting the protagonist Baku Madarame. Shiraishi is cast as Ranko Kurama, a crazy sadistic female leader of a yakuza clan. The two play the ultimate death games for what they each owe: a best friend, a scumbag parent, and an irresistible past.
Hideo Nakta (the Ring series), who directed the features film, supervises the web drama. The Takaomi Kaji arc is based on a popular episode from the original manga, while the Ranko Kurama arc tells a completely original story. The four-episode series will be posted on dTV simultaneously on the film's release day in Japan, February 11, 2022.

some of yall might know ive been eatin through an obscene amount of mangas (mostly death games and gambling stuff) heres 6 titles i read this year (2022) that stood out!
Usogui - Sako Toshio (2006-2017) its weirdly obscure for how GOOD it is its death gambling with martial arts and its really good and its also like, gay. as in baku (titular usogui) is a gay little clown and the last gamble is paralleled w lesbian sex on screen. 👍 def a must read if you anyone ever recced something titled [noun] game to you, you like kaiji / gin to kin, or had the misfortune of reading gamble fish and thought "wow i wish this was actually good!"
Tumblr media
Money Game - Bae Jinsoo (2018) title holder of my favorite webtoon which isnt a very big honor but its also top 5 favorite death games so that should tell you something. 8 or so people have to live together in a concrete hallway for 100 days and whatever money remains at the end gets shared between them. felt very real and it thinks about a lot of things in clever ways like how to organize a society, how can you trust anyone ever, etc. genuinely well written and interesting we love to read it
Tumblr media
Duds Hunt - Tetsuya Tsutsui (2005) another favorite death game but this is less microsociety and a lot more street fights to the death. its all in one volume and its so good and i love it forever ok. loser protag written with compassion the escalation into fights to the death makes sense the ending makes me chew tables. read duds hunt and maybe understand something fundamental about me
Tumblr media
Setoutsumi - Konomoto Kazuya (2012 - 2017) comedy manga about two pals talking after school. genuinely hilarious and it made me wanna puke and i cannot say anything more than that you will have to read it.
Tumblr media
Hikaru no Go - Hotta Yumi, Obata Takeshi (1998-2003) about some kids who become go professionals. i read hobby/sport manga every so often and ever since ive read hikaru i just keep comparing everything to it without meaning to. to me its everything that genre should be. AND it has things to SAY about go and games in general.! i dont play go also its not an akagi or a ten you dont need to know how to play to enjoy this one 👍
Tumblr media
+ bonus mention Muchuu sa, Kimi ni. - Wayama Yama (2019) "Captivated, by You", a collection of one-shots that are all really fun to read through if you enjoy reading about highschoolers (sorry) also kinda gay.? idk just the human relations are real to me its fun we love to see it

Japan Box Office: JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 Has Stayed at No.1 for Six Straight Weeks
Even in its tenth weekend of release, its box office strength remains unchallenged. JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 earned a still impressive 184 million yen (1.6 million USD) on 121,000 admissions in its tenth weekend and has stayed at the No.1 spot for six straight weeks.
The 105-minute film made its No.1 debut in its opening weekend of December 25-26, 2021. After dropping to second in its third weekend (defeated by Spider-Man: No Way Home), it returned to No.1 in its fifth weekend of January 22-23 and has kept the position since then. Its total domestic gross has reached 12.1 billion yen (105 million USD) on 8.66 million admissions. It has become the 24th top-grossing film of all-time in Japan, surpassing Hayao Miyazaki's 2013 film The Wind Rises (12.02 billion yen).
The live-action film adaptation of Toshio Sako's gambling-themed manga Usogui (The Lie Eater), directed by Hideo Nakta (the Ring series), quickly disappeared from the box office top 10 in its third weekend from the previous weekend's 10th. The film has earned a dissapointing 180 million yen (1.56 million USD) from its domestic run so far.
Last weekend's only new anime film, DEEMO THE MOVIE, the anime feature film adaptation of Taiwanese company Rayark's rhythm game for smartphone, DEEMO, was released in 100 theaters across Japan on February 25, but failed to rank in the overall weekend box office ranking top 10. It also didn't appear in Filmarks' first day satisfaction ranking top 10.

Japan Box Office: JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 Has Taken The Top Spot for Five Consecutive Weeks
The momentum shows no signs of slowing down yet. JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 earned a strong 336 million yen (2.93 million USD) on 213,000 admissions in its ninth weekend, and has stayed at the No.1 spot in the Japanese weekend box office for five consecutive weeks.
The recent weekend results show that both box office revenue and ticket sales have increased by more than 30 percent from the previous weekend. One of the reasons for this is the limited edition memorial book that has been distributed to a total of 500,000 people nationwide since February 19, which contains spoiler-filled interviews with the voice cast members and unreleased key animation drawings.
The total domestic gross of the film has reached 11.62 billion yen (101 million USD) on 8.34 million admissions, and is expected to surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens (11.63 billion yen) soon to become the 26th top-grossing film of all-time in Japan.
The live-action film adaptation of Toshio Sako's gambling-themed manga Usogui (The Lie Eater), directed by Hideo Nakta (the Ring series), dropped to tenth in its second weekend from its opnening weekend's fifth. It is expected to disappear from the top 10 next weekend.
Fruits Basket -prelude-, a compilation film of the TV series Fruits Basket based on Natsuki Takaya's popular shoujo manga, was released in 25 theaters on February 18, then earned 33 million yen (287,650 USD) on 20,000 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday. Due to its small number of theaters, the film that also includes a newly-written after story episode didn't appear in the overall box office ranking top 10, but ranked No.1 in Filmarks' first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.24/5.00 based on 142 reviews.
Atsuko Ishizuka (A Place Further than the Universe)-directed original anime feature film Goodbye, DonGlees, which was released in 217 theaters on February 18, also failed to rank in the top 10 in its opening weekend. It ranked fifth and received an average rating of 3.59/5.00 based on 482 reviews on Filmarks' first day satisfaction ranking.
Weekend box office Top 10 in Japan (February 19-20, 2022)
(ticket sales basis)
   1 (1). "JUJUTSU KAISEN 0" - 11.62 billion yen
2 (new). "Aikoku Jyoshi Kurenai Bushido" - 193 million yen

 4 (new). "Ushikubi-mura"

 6 (3). "Confidence Man JP Eiyu-hen" - 2.4 billion yen
 7 (4). "Spider-Man: No Way Home" - 3.9 billion yen
