... Little Jizo on the grounds of the Kiyomizu Temple. These are ancient tomb stones that have lost their tombs. People gather them in groups and dres in little aprons and even hats. Some of them are believed to protect travellers, some others - to protect unborn children that were miscarried (these often look like baby Buddha statues). Every day these poor innocent souls have to build stacks of stones which get destroyed by the next day, when the works starts again. Dressing Jizo, people hope that someone will take care of these kids in that world as well. ... #mysquiggles_japan ... #uskjapan #travelbook #travelsketch #travelsketchbook #sketchbookpage #sketchbook #archsketch #traveljournal #traveldiary #artbook #inspiration #sketching #sketchart #urbansketchers #sketchwalker #watercolor #watercolorsketch #watercolorsketchbook #citysketch #sketchguru #instaartist #sketchaday #урбанскетч #скетчбук #городскиезарисовки #скетчакварелью #тревелбук #артбук (at Kiyomizu-dera)

Okochi Sanso (Okochi Mountain Villa), Arayashiyama, Kyoto. - I had a chance to talk with 3 Japanese ladies while I did this sketch, I believe they were from Shiraoka. No wonder, I couldn’t speak Japanese and they couldn’t speak English or Thai. We chatted for around 15 minutes dicussing my art with google translate help. ☺️ Only 3 words I knew were Saburashi, Sugoi and Kirei. They gave me a handkerchief as a gift before they left. Thank you so much! It is amazing how people can connect through art. . #japansketch2017 #uskjapan #japan #kyoto #arayashiyama #okochisanso #urbansketchersjapan #torontoartist #japansketch #urbansketch #usk #urbansketchers #tousk #torontourbansketchers #torontoartist (at Ōkōchi Sansō)

I took @joycehesselgrave 's suggestion and ordered a set of Winsor & Newton water mixable oil paint set. It arrived yesterday and today I tried it out for the first time. It's amazing that I could mix oil and water together like this. The set came without black so I used acrylic black and I still had some remnants of my oil paint on the palette. It's unbelievable that they all could mix together and blend. At first I worried about using the wrong paint so I marked some acrylic red on the water soluble oil tubes, but this is probably not necessary. And like Joyce said, the water soluble paint dries much faster than the oil paint but not as fast as acrylic or gouache. It's neither matte like gouache nor shiny like acrylic, but somewhere in between. I'm still struggling to get used to this new medium but no more liquin and no more of that oil paint smell. So wonderful!

Today I stumbled upon a pile of oil paint tubes from years ago. To my surprise, they were still good!!! So, I thought instead of throwing them away let's find out how different they are in comparison to my water-base mediums nowadays. The result is very encouraging. Having struggled with acrylic lately I was very shocked to see how forgiving oil is. Since it stays wet (like forever) I could easily correct any mistake quickly without having to re-paint over the entire area like acrylic. Furthermore, the wetness allows the paint to blend naturally giving very soft edges. I used liquin to speed up the drying and still it remains very wet, but touchable. And the smell of paint thinner is not all that pleasant in my small studio. But the lesson is that if the slow drying could be tolerated (such as the situation in a studio), oil is quite a nifty medium in comparison to acrylic.
