Today is warm, bright and sunny and I got my Winsor & Newton Slow Drying medium (thanks to @joycehesselgrave) ready to try out. It looked and worked exactly like Liquin with oil painting but in reverse. Liquin speeds the drying of oil paint while this medium slows the drying of acrylic. It turned the acrylic paint into a jel wet long enough on the surface for me to mix. Thus I was able to use up all the paint I squeezed out. But the side effect is that the surface now looks a bit like gouache. It's matte not shiny like acrylic, which I don't mind. The information on the bottle spells out that the hues and color intensity won't change, and that seems to be true. It's still dark but a little thinner, i.e., more transparent. With the paint now wet longer I thus could swing a larger 1 inch brush and that was fun. It was hot and brutal standing under the sun. So Stuart Perlman and I finished within one hour and headed out to New Noodle City for some Vietnamese food. Second plein air sketch of the day. This time I went to Portofino section of Redondo Beach. The weather was beautiful, and the colors were fantastic! I was getting better at mixing the paint before it dried and painting fast. Once the paint dried it was clear how much darker it became. Still the contrast was pretty amazing between the light and the dark colors. There has gotta be a mid-point somewhere that the colors I saw and the final hues of acrylic must meet and that's what I'm after. I think I'm slowly getting there. One encouraging fact is how fast I could crank these out. One large sketch 8.27" x 23.4" per hour and the paint dries into a flat shiny surface - The beauty of acrylic!! I went to the Wayfarer Chapel hoping to sketch the ocean through a row of trees, but the darn place is closed. So I hopped across the street to Albalone Cove Park, and sketched. Plein air with acrylic is tough and I'm beginning to slowly see one problem after another. I didn't get my slow drying medium from Amazon yet, so another fight with the paint quickly hardening under the sun. I painted as fast as possible to grab the correct colors wet enough to mix onto the surface and that created some really interesting hues. On one hand it was still pretty hard and dark, but on the other hand it had a certain brutal impressionistic spontaneity about it. Due to the horrendous prices of gouache, and the fact that I have tons of acrylic paint leftover from years past, I've decided to switch from gouache to acrylic. This includes pleinair. Today I wanted to use acrylic on the same live subject matter to see the differences against gouache. And the differences are very interesting. As acrylic dries faster and harder than qouache, the color separation is much more distinct with sharper edges giving a strong contrast. Gouache blends better resulting in a sweeter, warmer result. But I just love the volume and flow of acrylic. The secret is how to make acrylic behaves like gouache. The experimentation continues ... Today's Paint-Out with my good friend, Stuart, who found a secluded location at the Japanese section of the Descanso garden. Carolien Jacobs from Usk LA happened to come by with her gears and the 3 of us sat down sketching. The sun was out and the weather was gorgeous. It was crowded and many visitors came to see us sketching. The kids loved it. Din-Tai-Fung in Arcadia for lunch and we signed off a very productive day. Despite the weather, @stuartperlman and I went to Descanso Gardens to paint Cherry Blossom. It was wonderful to capture Sakura in the rain with the colors muted and yet so beautiful. The rain kept the visitors away and we had the gardens to ourselves. Afterwards we went to Arcadia Mall for lunch. It was pouring down pretty hard but we felt very much accomplished.
