The third place coffeehouse faces a serious challenge
The rapid rise of kiosk coffee sellers poses a threat to the business model behind the ultimate American third placeโthe cafe. Communities and nonprofits may have to take a larger role.
Iโm worried about our third places.
To those unfamiliar, third places are those venues, other than home and work, where people head for conversation, connection and belonging. Every culture (and subculture) has its own version. Well-known (albeit fictional) ones in ours include Fell's Point Diner (Diner), Cheers (Cheers), Central Perk (Friends), Cafe Nervosa (Frazier), My-T-Sharp Barbershop (Coming to America) and Calvin's Barbershop (Barbershopย franchise), among many others.
Largely through the rapid expansion and near-ubiquity of Starbucks Coffee, the coffeehouse has established itself in recent decades as North America's preeminent third place, with a business model in which high margins on the coffee and espresso-based beverages effectively cross-subsidize the social function.ย ย
Its success might lead some to take such gathering places for granted. For the last five years or so, however, I've noticed a looming threat on the horizon. And especially amidst the pandemic, it has been approaching ever closer.
It's what I call the โutilitarian caffeine dispenser,โย or UCD, which casts aside the social function and focuses primarily if not solely on the high-margin transaction.
Please, Atlanta: let's add thousands of new residents to Downtown
Downtown needs an injection of many thousands of new non-student residents! It's too nice of a place to be as empty as it is for this many days of the year.
Having students living in Downtown is awesome and I don't mean to dismiss that. The place is so much better off now than it was, say, 20 years ago when there wasn't as much student housing.
But it's not enough, quite obviously. We need 24/7 vibrancy for these streets, and that will only happen with the introduction of a ton of permanent residents of mixed incomes -- by which I mean: not just luxury housing for wealthy folks. Lower income people need to have access to all this great transit coverage and walkability!
One of the difficulties with convincing people of this need is that a lot of Atlantans only see Downtown during times when it's packed with events crowds or with GSU students, during class time. So they never really see the "down time."
If you want to catch the sad, slow moments for the district, this week is a good opportunity. Here's what Peachtree looked like today in the late afternoon: a ghost town.
Several of the Broad Street restaurants that used to be open in the evening when I lived here were closed, and there are some empty storefronts that used to be filled. While other retail centers around the city appear to be thriving now, despite the pandemicโs damage to the economy, this place hasnโt proven to be as resilient. Surely a residential boom could help.ย
It's hard to operate a small business with that ebb and flow of foot traffic. Even if biz owners can plan ahead for it, that's a financial struggle that a historic downtown shouldn't be saddling them with. Let's make this the great, diverse neighborhood it can be!

The Balerion Coven was strong, powerful, and cunning. Prior to the coven witches marrying a human and tragedy striking, it was among the best in witches' history.
The leader of the Balerion coven, Visenya's mother was a formidable witch, but with the birth of her daughter, she developed a kinder side. Her mother taught Visenya about the background of her coven. Visenya gained knowledge in casting spells and making potions. Visneya's mother was aware that she wished for Visneya to lead the coven and live to see it.ย
Unfortunately, Visenya was out collecting glow orbs one night. Their coven sister's husband was a human who deceived her, hanged her, and chopped off her head. He then enlisted his allies in an assault on the Balerion coven. The witches were executed along with Visenya's mother.
After the men set it on fire, she returned to find the coven home in ruins. The Balerion blood and lineage lingered through her. All her coven sisters and mother were dead. Gathering all she could from the area, Visneya went to where her mother had said she would be safe in case of need.
