Blood Sports and Ethnomusicology (2/2)
This first video is of a man at my boxing gym who is at sparring practice. He is shown kicking the body shield held by his coach, and although there is no sound to the video, he was yelling with each strike. Boxing is a form of blood sport, and is arguably one of the few in the United States. Miller describes a blood sport as “a competition that explicitly seeks to bring about a flow of blood from […] human- human contestants” (313). This relates to boxing, because it is a stand-off between two opponents who not only strike each other with their fists, but can win by either decision or knockout. Because the purpose is to inhibit your opponent, knocking them out usually involves blood, as common injuries include black eyes, lacerations, broken bones (jaw, nose, etc.), and, in rare instances, death.
The second video is an example of ethnomusicology. It is of a Native American flute that I acquired two years ago, in F# major. This instrument might be studied in ethnomusicology, because traditionally, it’s music is used for ceremonies, entertainment, and prayer. Although the flute is an instrument that has existed since long before civilization (some estimates place its creation around 60,000 BCE), it’s importance to Native American culture is undeniable. Through the “cross-cultural study of [this] music”, anthropologists may further understand the meaning of spirituality in Native cultures, especially in a modern world where many cultures risk being eliminated by white oppression and assimilation (Miller 305).
