I feel like most undertale main characters have gone through so much trauma related to their families that seeing sans and papyrus be a happy family might make them emotional but ultimately share that happiness with them. I think their brotherly love is so essential to this friend group, even if it's just by telling puns

Chapter 6: Welp, it surprisingly succeeded
In which not only you have hope.
*Toriel's POV*
I haven't felt this happy in such a long time. (Y/N), a sweet and wonderful young lady, has made our wildest dreams come true. Now she's our ambassador, and she'll continue fighting for us. She is just that wonderful! I couldn't be more grateful!
Asgore and I started to walk back to the house, talking happily about our plans for the future. Such a happy event even made me forget all my problems with my husband. It's just a miracle!
However, when we arrived... the mood completely changed. The owner's daughter looked like she was about to cry, the owners themselves looked uncomfortable, and everyone else was silent.
And Sans was missing.
"Oh my... what happened in here?" I asked, calm as I could.
"Mrs. Dreemurr..." Surprisingly, Emily was the one who answered. I didn't interrupt her, indicating she could continue. And she shyly did. "They had a fight. Alphys started to speak negatively, and Frisk shouted at her. Then, Undyne intervened and fight back. Papyrus tried to help, though, but he failed, receiving a hard push from Undyne..."
I was surprised, especially by my daughter's behavior. Just when I was about to open my mouth, Emily continued.
"...then Sans lose it. He screamed at Undyne, then he punched her. Then, for some reason, he punched Dr. Gaster as well..." She started to weep, and I was in shock.
I never saw Sans hitting someone. And even less his own father. Do I know my friend as I thought I did?
I was about to scold my child when I was interrupted. Emily gasped for air, the continued.
"Sans apologized. I know he didn't mean it. He was just angry that Papy got hurt..." she took a pause to stand straightly, and then spoke with more security. "He thanked me for everything, saying that it was good while it lasted. Then he teleported, and... he cried."
I saw how everyone's reaction was the same as mine's: shocked eyes full of guilt. I felt guilty of thinking less of him from hitting his father, but know that I remember, Gaster has never been the best with his sons. He may have done something.
Also, to hear that my favorite comedian was crying, I couldn't just take it easy.
But, instead of guilt, I saw something else on Papyrus's pupils...
And then I realized it was fear.
"SANS! WHERE ARE YOU?!" he shouted while he rushed upstairs, worry taking over him. This shocked us even more. Because yes, you may worry if a close one is crying, but there's nothing to be afraid of.
Unless...
No. It can't be.
Sans is just too cheerful for that- it couldn't possibly be.
A few minutes after, for everyone's surprise, Sans walked downstairs. He immediately went to the couch, something he normally does. But I noticed something besides he was lazy...
He was tired.
Really tired.
"My friend- Sans" I spoke, more worryingly than I thought I would "Are you feeling better?"
"yes, tori. don't worry 'bout me, k?"
I sighed in relief, noting he used his usual expressions. That's the Sans I know.
Before I could answer, Asgore decided to say the news. I would have disagreed, but I realized this could lighten the mood a bit more.
"Listen up, everyone..." he made his way through the center, all eyes on him. I smiled "We made it"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Sans's POV*
I walked downstairs with Papyrus at my side, feeling like the scum of the Earth. Then I realized that the kings have arrived.
I'm not ready to hear the truth.
I immediately went to the couch so I could feel safer. This was my plan: whenever they finally spit it out, I would hide on the couch so I can't hear everyone's sobs. My hoodie would also help.
This plan always worked on my house- why it wouldn't in here?
I suddenly feel tired.
Like, really tired.
Oh boy.
"My friend- Sans" Tori said worryingly, making me turn towards her. "Are you feeling better?"
How did she- shit. They told her.
Don't let her know more, Sans.
"yes, tori. don't worry 'bout me, k?"
She sighed in relief, making me relaxed. She won't ask anymore. And I'll be safe...
for now.
Suddenly, the king made his way to the center, catching everyone's attention. Tori smiled, and I frowned.
What?
"Listen, everyone..." he firmly said, making me suspicious. "We made it"
...
WHAT THE-
If I had a drink, I would have surely spit it out by now.
We all stared in shock until Paps broke the silence.
"OH MY GOD! SANS! WE DID IT!!!!!" he exclaimed happily, while he held me in the air. Then the realization hit everyone and they started to celebrate. Even Emily and her parents.
"OH YESSSS BABYYYY!" Mettaton shouted excitedly, stretching his legs 'glamorously'. Ew.
Everyone was clapping and jumping, shouting and forgetting the fight we had. Even Gaster was smiling, for God's sake!
But who...
Wait, did (Y/N)... Oh lord, God bless her.
And at that moment, I swear, I was happy. Truly happy.
The impossible turned out to be possible. Then, by any chance, maybe I will be happy in the future. Maybe I will change. Maybe.
But now the 'maybe' doesn't seem too far.
Now I'm filled with HOPE.
Since it was dark outside and we were tired, we didn't make a party. I mean, for today.
So we all went to sleep. And with all, I mean everyone.
Even me.
Not before calling (Y/N) in the bathroom, of course... the guys are just too annoying if, well, a boy talks with a girl their age. And she's probably on her twenties, so... yeah.
I dialed her number and had an anxiety attack on the bathtub. What was I even supposed to tell her?! I'm such a fucking idiot.
"Hello?" she answered kindly, and a little bit startled I think. "This is (Y/N) (L/N). How can I help you?"
Oh, she doesn't have my ID? I would feel offended, but hey, I'm a freak. Not even I would save my ID.
"uh, eh... hi (y/n). it's me, eh, sans. y' know, sans the-"
"Oh! Hi Sans!" she interrupted me, with a slight new hint of confidence in her voice. "I'm sorry, I didn't look at the ID when I picked up the cellphone. The sound startled me so much I just immediately answered. I apologize..."
Oh, so she does have my ID? Weird.
"Anyways, is there something you want to tell me, Sans?"
Oh, right. I almost forgot why I was calling her. I mentally facepalmed myself, then almost slammed my head on the bathtub before reconsidering it. I decided not to do it, though. Last time it happened it hurt like fucking hell.
"i, uh... just wanted to thank you for everything, kid" Kid? Dude, what the- "i mean, (y/n). the kings just gave us the good news and... i thought i should thank you for all your effort and disposition. no one else had the courage to do it, so... yeah... thank you"
There was an odd silence after that.
Oh lord, did I just screwed up?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Your POV*
Sans was thanking me for what I did...
Sans.
Sans.
I stood there in shock, unsure of what I should tell him. I've never seen this side of him. He normally just jokes around me and kink-shames way more than anyone else has ever done. And now, he is sincerely thanking me for everything.
...
Wow.
Is this a plan of Papyrus?
"I, uh... it's really nothing Sans. I did my best, and I'm glad it turned out well"
"i heard that you are our ambassador now. is that true?"
Oh shit, he's right. I'm the ambassador, therefore, I might see this dude again...
...
Just don't say anything stupid.
"Oh yes! That's true! I'll be helping you guys more in the future. Especially for... discriminatory causes" I let out a sigh, not wanting to scare him. But, again, he is most likely an adult. He needs to know, sooner or later. And the sooner, the better. "You see, we humans may be quite... egocentric. Most of humanity does things for their own benefit, without caring about the others. And some people may try to hurt you, just because you are different. Not in rights nor in feelings, Sans. Just in looks... and in souls I suppose"
"yeah... we may be different than you guys..." He took a long pause, and I was trying to think of something to say, but it would be rude to interrupt him... again. After a few moments, though, he spoke:
"that doesn't mean we can't be friends, right? eh, i mean, you are pretty cool, and my brother would love to see you again, so... yeah. i know you're different than them, which is why they have criticized you, but still... we are different species. would you be ok with being friends with different people?"
"Of course I'll be okay with it, Sans! Monster or human, a friend is still a friend!"
Wait, did he just said something about me being criticized? There's no way he could have known...
"But what do you mean about me being criticized, Sans?"
"i'm not stupid, (y/n). i recognize disapproval looks anywhere. i may have listened to some comments as well..."
Of course, that sneaky skeleton.
"and that's why i'm mostly asking you, anyway. are you sure you want to keep up with this crap?"
Am I? People have been looking at me quite different these days. I lost touch with some work partners, even. But...
How am I supposed to give up a friendship? And more, if it is with Papyrus? He's just really sweet and charming, one of the best people I've ever met. Even if he may be a kid, he is just wonderful. If the price I need to pay is to get all those looks forever, then I'll pay for it. I have gained worse things, anyway.
"I'm sure, Sans. It's not like I haven't endured worse things. I can take it. And, besides, it will be worth it"
"...ok. just be careful, tho. there's a dangerous world outside"
"You don't say"

Our Skeleton 27
Just finished chapter 27 of Our Skeleton! You can find it under the cut below, or on Ao3 here:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/7563223/chapters/46057162
Toriel was calmly sitting in the living room with a knitting project on her lap when her cell-phone began vibrating. She fixed the knitting in such a way that it wouldn’t unravel on her, set it aside, and pulled her phone out of her pocket to answer it. She’d only just gotten it, so it took her awhile to remember how to answer it. By the time she did, the call had ended. Without hesitating Toriel called the number back. It rang for a moment, then was answered.
“Yeah? Who’s this?” Undyne’s gruff voice carried through the speaker.
“It is Toriel. I believe you have just tried to call me?”
“Oh. Yeah. Thanks for calling back. I forgot to tell you guys at the picnic the other day, but I found out the names of Pap’s parents. They’re probably Sans’, too. Do you want to hear?”
Toriel’s eyes sparkled. Finally! “Yes, Undyne. I wish nothing more than to learn their names.”
“Got it. Let me find that piece of paper...Oh! Here it is! Let’s see. Their names are Coursiva and T.N. Roman Revenant. Do those names ring a bell?”
Toriel was stunned. Revenant? She knew that name. Where did she know that name from? It felt vaguely familiar, as if it had been a long time since she had heard it. A very long time...Oh! She remembered.
-----
A grand ball was one of young Toriel’s favorite places to be. She loved the fancy clothes, the dancing, the people, the food - everything about a ball was exciting. This one was especially exciting because she got to wear her new dress. It was a flared ball gown in powder blue with a ruffled train and puffed sleeves. She loved it.
The other exciting thing about this ball was the number of monsters. Usually, when Toriel’s parents took her to attend a ball, it was being hosted by the human royalty they were stationed with. This time was different. This ball was a celebration of a peace treaty between one of the magic-hating human countries and the kingdom they were being ambassadors to. So there was another family of monsters Toriel could get to play with.
A human female in a stunning red dress swept aside and Toriel was finally able to see the other monsters. They were skeletons; three of them. The tallest of the three was a female skeleton. She had a beautiful yellow headdress that looked like a cross between a hijab and a beaded, braided head full of hair. There were hundreds of little beads cascading off the golden fabric. Orange, red, white - it was a tapestry of color and texture. Below the headdress was an orange mermaid dress with long sleeves and yellow ruffles.
The next tallest monster was an adult male skeleton. He was wearing a lovely caftan in browns and golds. It reminded Toriel of the jasper cat’s eye she had been given for her 200th birthday. She still had the stone in her jewelry box.
The final skeleton was a bit smaller. He looked to be the age of a child, maybe the equivalent of 13 or 14 human years old. His outfit was very similar to his father’s, only his was done up in greens and greys. Toriel thought it was an odd color combination. It looked more like a mossy rock than an outfit for celebrating in.
Toriel swept over to the trio. It wasn’t quite the full, elegant sweeping her mother could pull off, but it was still impressive. People made a path for her to move in. Before long she was there.
“Hello! I am Toriel Agouti, daughter of the ambassadors to Faiburr kingdom. Am I correct in assuming you are the ambassadors to Hefferse? It is a pleasure to meet you.”
The skeletons looked at her outstretched hand uncomfortably. Then the mother spoke.
“We are the Revenants. My name is Arial. My husband’s name is Merriweather, and my son’s name is T.N. Roman. I am sorry for our seeming lack of manners, but to shake hands was considered very rude in our last posting, and the habit sticks.”
Toriel quickly dropped her hand and curtseyed. “I am sorry, I had no intention to insult you. It is very rare for us to have other monsters to talk to. So few have the time to come to the capitol for a social visit. Please join me for refreshments. We have spider cider, rainbow pastries, symphony bonbons, and starlight cheesecakes.”
Once again the family of skeletons looked ill-at-ease. T.N. Roman was looking to his parents as if he were lost. Arial’s skull was painted with disgust, but it was Merriweather who spoke.
“Magic use is...not encouraged in Hefferse. A lot of the humans are afraid of it, and monsters have been arrested for using it. Most of the elite are more open-minded, but please don’t offer us magic food again. We have become used to hiding all magic. An influx of energy would throw us off balance.”
Toriel swallowed and curtseyed again. “I am truly sorry for any insult I might have caused. There are non-magical aperitifs as well. Let me show them to you.”
------
Toriel blinked as the memory left her, then smiled. So, that explained that little oddity. Learning to hide your magic at such a young age was a habit that would be hard to shake. It was not all that surprising that it might be passed down to the next generation, even if the reason it had been learned was no longer accurate.
“Um, hello? Toriel? Did you hear me?”
Toriel cleared her throat. “Yes, Undyne, I did hear you. I was simply remembering something from a long time ago. I do indeed remember the Revenant family. They were ambassadors to a neighboring country at the same time as my parents. I met them once. They were very stiff and inflexible, but there is something I remembered which explains one of the more confusing qualities of Papyrus and Sans.”
Undyne said gruffly, “Yeah? What is it?”
“You are aware of how the two of them hide their magic, are you not?” Toriel asked.
“Yeah. It’s so fricking weird how Pap will just go blank right after a spell. I can’t read him at all, and Sans is even worse.”
Toriel grinned. “Well, the country that the Revenants were stationed in hated magic. Having it out in the open was dangerous. The whole family had to learn to hide their magic. T.N. Roman was younger than me...maybe the equivalent of a twelve year old?”
Undyne said roughly, “You think he would have passed that on to his kids? It sort of makes sense. Kids don’t always get the circumstances that make something necessary. I can see him keeping up that habit. And it would explain why the bone brothers act the way they do...yeah. Do you mind if I share this with Alphys? She’s right here.”
Toriel blinked. “Of course you can tell your partner. I will be telling Asgore...and perhaps eventually Sans. I want to learn more about his childhood first. I do not want to have any surprises. You can stop yourself from telling Papyrus, can you not?”
“Yeah, I can do that. The way they act...his parents had to have hurt him. Emotionally, physically, I don’t care. I don’t want to see him get shredded into little smiling pieces.”
“Of course,” Toriel smiled. “And I look forward to seeing you at Papyrus’ birthday party.”
“Yeah!” Undyne cheered, “It’s gonna be at the big game sanctuary. They’ve got lions and tigers and bears-”
“Oh my!” Toriel couldn’t resist saying it. It had been set up so nicely, she just had to!
“Ugh, fine. I guess I have to let you have that one. Just...try not to ruin Papyrus’ birthday party with your jokes? Too many of them really get on his nerves.”
“I will,” Toriel promised. “I look forward to seeing you then!”
“Bye,” Undyne said shortly before she hung up. Toriel stared at the phone in shock for a minute. Then she sighed and returned it to her inventory.
Now on to serious matters...what was she going to get Papyrus for his birthday?

Backed into a Corner (Lost and Found Arc)
About six or so hours later, they all woke up, ready to interrogate Frisk and Chara. Both of the hybrids woke up none too happy, for they knew they couldn't go anywhere. Frisk was especially livid about the barrier still being up; he started roaring loudly, waking everyone up fully. Chara was ready to have a fit as well, seeing she was still trapped.
"YOU!" She started, flashing her creepy face to the fullest.
"ASRIEL DREEMURR! YOU PIECE OF SHIT! FIRST, THE HUMANS, THEN MOM, NOW YOU?! HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT?!"
Asriel's head pounded, thanks to the extreme volume of how loud Frisk and Chara were being. Then Sans, being very angry about being woken up, smacked Frisk and Chara's heads together.
Asriel's head pounded, thanks to the extreme volume of how loud Frisk and Chara were being. Then Sans, being very angry about being woken up, smacked Frisk and Chara's heads together.
"Shut...the FUCK...UP!!" Sans demanded.
"It's 6-something in the morning! No one needs to hear you yell!"
"Fuck you, comedian! You and Asriel did this to Frisk and I!"
"Yeah, well guess what?" Asriel said with his scleras turning black, his horns getting longer, and his face gaining black markings.
"That barrier I made? You can't destory it because you don't have enough souls! And no human souls, no broken barrier. Plain and simple. Which means now you HAVE to tell us."
"What makes you think we have to tell you anything?" Frisk snarled, starting to look feral as the prince of monsters got smug.
"Oh, not much. Just the fact that your freedom depends on your honesty."
"What?! You better let us out if you know what's good for you! I'm gonna count to three, and if you don't release us before hand, YOU'RE A DEAD MAN!"
"AW, SHUT UP! EVEN IF YOU DID MANAGE TO KILL ME, WHO'S TO SAY YOU'LL BE FREE?! HUH?! OR DID THAT SLIP YOUR FUCKING MIND?!"
Frisk was immediately checkmated. He remembered that even though the magicians who created the original barrier were dead for years, their creation stood strong until Asriel did away with it.
"I still say you need to let Chara and I go. Now."
"I refuse to lower that barrier unless you give us what we want. I mean, like, unless you actually ENJOY being trapped in that barrier. I mean, think about it. Being forced to remain in that same spot forever. Must be pretty degrading and debilitating, am I right, or am I right?"
"Well, fuck you, too, Rei!" Chara said sarcastically.
"I don't need the barrier lowered. Nope! Leave me here; I'll take dignity over freedom any day."
"With all due respect Princess Dreemurr, it seems as if you're sacrificing both of those things." Gaster hypothesized.
"Chara, this has gone on long enough, young lady." Asgore boomed.
"Oh well for me, then, dad!" Chara snapped.
"You'd rather be left to die than talk about your problem?"
"Chara, just tell us already!" Alphys said, getting fed up.
"This is a safe place!"
"Whatever eatin' you punks up can't be that bad!"
"Now do you get it, you two?" Toriel beseeched.
"There are people that are on your side. Just let us help you fight whatever is troubling you both."
"Hypocrite."
"What was that?!"
"HYPOCRITE!!"
"HOW?! HOW AM I A HYPOCRITE IN THIS SPECIFIC SENSE?!"
"You say I need to seek help for my problems, but all you can do is ignore yours because you think you're fucking perfect. WELL, NEWSFLASH, MOM: YOU'RE NOT! And to make things worse, you think you can atone for what you did back then by being sorry. Yeah, I did some fucked up shit, but at least I was properly disgusted with myself, mom. You, on the other hand, I forgave you for dad's sake. And that's because I know you don't really care about what you did back then. You're just lonely, and you don't want people to leave you in your life because you're afraid of what people will think of you. And because of that, you put on that whole classy act, just to make yourself look good."
Everyone had a stunned silence. They couldn't believe Chara was really talking to Toriel like this. The older boss monster raised and ignited her arms, keeping her head low, and asked Chara something not too endearing.
"Why do you not like watching things burn, Chara?" She calmly asked with immeasurable, yet restrained, rage.
Chara had a small twinge the second she heard Toriel say those words. It's true, she wasn't happy about having a campfire before they fell asleep, but Toriel hit Chara where it hurt most of all. Then, an extremely bad memeory played through Chara's head. It involved her mother getting slaughtered by the villagers, being stabbed initially, then burned at a stake, due to being a magician. Afterwards, the memory fast-forwarded to being forced to watch as her home went up in flames. Suddenly, she snapped out of it, coming back to reality. Her breath became labored out of fear as she spoke.
"That...is none...of your concern, mother." She said, trembling.
Toriel let her true sadistic self come out, finally forcing Chara's hand at brutal honesty. Frisk got scared too, for Toriel got close to him.
"Asriel, shrink the barrier a bit."
Her son shrunk the barrier enough for it to split into two, causing Chara and Frisk to be separated. She approached Frisk and started licking her lips, causing Frisk to tuck his tail between his legs while his eyes turned yellow.
"Aw, what's the matter, you two? Scared of little ol' me? You know why you're scared? It's because I remember exactly why you're like this. Unfortunately, regarding that, YOU have to be the one to speak the truth, not me."
"Mom, that's a low blow, especially for you." Chara said, trying to resist her mother.
"Doesn't matter. Why is your pyrophobia 'none of my concern', Chara?"
"Because it isn't any of your concern! That's why!"
"Fine. But Frisk, why are you scared? You look like the perfect figure for an old woman like me. I could use someone to spruce my body up whenever I want."
Frisk trembled as he started seeing Rhonda in place of the boss monster.
"No...please. Please don't touch me. I don't want that." Frisk begged, starting to cry.
Everyone realized what Toriel was doing. She was trying to force the truth out of them by means of memories that were so painful, they'd be forced to reveal everything without a means to make anyone forget, or kill themselves. Everyone joined in on Toriel's efforts.
"Why wouldn't you, Frisk?" Asgore said, hanging his head low.
"I mean, think about it. Sleeping with an older woman is actually the ideal dream of a man your age. You should want Toriel more than Chara. I mean, after all, think of her experience, and besides, you secretly wanted it with that green lady. You didn't fight back until she got your pants off."
"Yeah, Frisk. You hesitated because you thought that she'd say you raped her, didn't you?" Undyne said with a smug look.
Frisk trembled and held himself.
"What about Chara, though? Perhaps she would...ah, I see. Burning at a stake?"
Chara instantly felt betrayed by Asgore.
"STOP." She demanded.
"I'm gonna take a guess and say your mom got burned to death for being a wizard. Then everyone else tried to kill you for being her daughter." Alphys said, trying to feign her heartlessness.
You sons of bitches." Frisk said, sharing the feeling of being betrayed.
"If you motherfuckers don't back off, then I SWEAR I'LL K-"
"We just want to know a bit about why you feel like this, you two." Papyurs said, unable to be cruel for that moment.
"Maybe if you were honest about why exactly you feel this way, it wouldn't feel as painful as it does right now. All we want is to understand. You can tell us. We won't judge. We promise. Besides, we're not the only ones who want know why you're acting like this."
Frisk got caught off guard the second Papyrus said that last sentence.
"Papyrus? What are you talking about?"
"NOW!"
Suddenly, a good deal of the monsters from Mount Ebott came out of hiding. Frisk was surprised they got here. But he was even more shocked at his parents arrival. Erica and Soichiro came out of hiding with their head held low. Erica kept her hand to her chest, feeling somewhat pained.
"No. Mom. Dad. Why? Why are you here?"
"Sweetie. Why won't you tell us what's wrong?" Erica asked, heartbroken.
"We just want to help you, Frisk. Please let us. We're begging you." Soichiro said, crying.
"Dad. Mom. I'm so sorry you had to get involved."
"If you're really sorry, then tell us the truth."
Frisk and Chara snapped at that moment. They took the kindest souls in their lives, and made them see what was going on. They gave up in that moment.
