This week’s episode is a personal one. We talk to @SunnyMegatron’s 91-year-old Uncle George. He tells us what it was like growing up as a gay man in Chicago in the 1940s. This was when being ‘homosexual’ was illegal and frequenting gay bars and meeting places could result in jail time. George traveled to dozens of countries throughout the mid 20th century, some more accepting than the US and others downright dangerous for gay travelers. An incident in South Africa almost landed him in prison for murder! George recounts living through the AIDS crisis and losing dear friends, how acting conservative with those he was out to ensured his security, the pain of having to hide his lifestyle & partners from family, the very first pride parades, his opinion on LGBTQ+ issues today, the struggles gay elderly people face, brushes with gay celebrities in the golden age of Hollywood, and more. Happy #GayUnclesDay to my #UncleGeorge! He's a huge part of our lives & at 91 he's still got it going on! Born in 1927 he lived through incredible intolerance-- raids, arrests, secrecy, violence, the AIDS crisis, etc. but still carved out a life for himself that was full of happiness & love. He's got SO MANY stories and they are pretty incredible. I often I wonder if younger LGBTQ+ folks really realize what it was growing up gay during this time. He'll be a guest soon on @AmericanSexPodcast sharing some of his experiences and I can’t wait for you to hear! Also, apparently Gay Uncles day was supposed to the the 2nd Sunday in August which was a few days ago-- 8/11/19. But even @georgehtakei is celebrating today so I'm going with that! I was doing a little reading up and it looks like this holiday way thought up in 2016 so it’s relatively new. People are still confused I suppose. Next year, second Sunday it is! Hi all, just joined this forum mainly because I lost a key fob for my Nissan and am told it could cost £300 to replace! I know the spot, but have had no luck finding it so far and need help.
