Ultimate Decades - 1300s - 1300

1300

 In 1300, Adam and Evelyn got married

With a first interaction like this, babies should be upon us soon

Evelyn's older sister, Mary, popped over for a visit

"Mary!"

"Sister!"

"How is farm life?"

"I'm still getting used to it. It's so different from the city"

Meanwhile, Adam's father, Joseph, went fishing to leave the women to it

Evelyn's cooking skills weren't quite up there yet (and Adam was nearly mauled by a bear so no protein...) so it was gruel until further notice

It's baby making time~

Evelyn spends the majority of her morning doing laundry

"Somehow I didn't think this is what the farm life would be like..."

"....."

"Me too. Mr. Rooster, me too"

(the rooster has a name but I did not write it down. lol)

Daisy the cow is currently Adam's favourite child

Evelyn found herself being done with her chores early in the day so she took up cross-stitch

"Ouch"

The young couple were being cute when Joseph came in to yell at them

God forbid anyone hugs around here

Another day, another baby attempt

"The gruel tastes different today, Evelyn. Trying something new?"

"Well..."

Evelyn's till working on this cooking thing

Evelyn was doing her chores while being judged by the rooster

"Good job, girl!"

The rooster judges silently

It was then that Evelyn's baby dreams were put on hold

The monthly 'illness' had arrived.

Time to get the rags

Since Evelyn wasn't allowed near the garden currently, she spent more time on her cross-stitching

Mary came to visit

"Sister, I heard you're banished from the garden"

"Unfortunately, yes. I was hoping to be with child but the Watcher felt like it wasn't the time I suppose"

During her confinement, Evelyn thought she'd work on her culinary skills

Gruel got tiring after all

So a vampire came in and drained poor Adam

With Adam still laid out, it was up to Joseph to pick up the slack

He didn't seem all that happy about it

Evelyn was finally free of her confinement and shared her happiness with Mr Rooster

It marks the second year of the Famine and boy it is tough. The one-meal-a-day thing is the worst part. Everyone is hungry ALL. THE. TIME. And everyone is always in a bad mood because of it. There were no other events of note this year. And then the Great Famine continues...

Ultimate Decades: 1300-1305

Been very religiously playing the Ultimate Decades challenge over the past like week. Started in the year 1300 and I’m chugging along. It’s been a different way for me to play and it’s been a blast so far! Lots of heartbreak though, lots of heartbreak.

1301: Mirabel Fletcher & Arne Payne get married (Gen 1 side household) / Arthur & Winifred Mannering were born (Cicily & John’s kids) / Cicily Mannering dies during childbirth / John Mannering gets remarried to Petra Gregory

1302: Leif & Godwin Payne were born (Mirabel & Arne’s kids) / Mirabel Payne dies during childbirth / Arne gets remarried to Mary Ellsworth / Alaric & Amelia Mannering were born (John & Petra’s kids) / Amelia was born stillborn

1303: Arthur Mannering dies from malnourishment / Winifred Mannering ages up to a toddler / Leif Payne ages up to a toddler / Godwin Payne dies from malnourishment

1304: Alaric Mannering dies from malnourishment / John Mannering dies form dysentery / Dorothy Mannering was born (John & Petra’s kid)

1305: Annora Payne was born (Arne & Mary’s kid) / Arne ages up to a young adult (died but his wife’s plead to Grim worked) / Petra Mannering ages up to a young adult / 1 hen & 1 rooster on the farm dies from old age

The Rowntrees Ultimate Decades Challenge - 1359

Content warning for death

During the spring of 1359, Arthur Rowntree went hunting to provide for his family. On the hunt, he got mauled by a bear. While he managed to make it home, he didn't survive long after that.

The entire family mourned his passing. Sarah lost her older brother, the only steady figure in her life since she was a toddler. Alexandria was especially devastated at the loss of her husband, who had been her only point of happiness during a difficult pregnancy. The man of the household, the Rowntree heir, and the main person making money had just died. They all worried for their futures.

While the death was rough, it did bring the women of the household closer together. They had all been sidelined in their families their entire lives. Now, they were in charge. They'd need to rely on each other to raise the children and take care of the house.

Alexandria's pregnancy continued to be rough, and she deeply missed her husband. Kymmie started sleeping in Alexandria's bed to help her through the long nights.

In the middle of all the chaos, Finnian aged up! The new heir grew to be a hot-headed child, probably affected by all the turmoil around during his childhood.

The reconfigured family began to settle into a routine. They continued staying close to the Bridgfords, visiting their house where Finnian, Jacquette, and Sarah got to hang out with other kids.

The third trimester of Alexandria's pregnancy was the hardest, and she was unable to do much. The pregnancy was very hard on her body. It was also a constant reminder of the loss of her husband.

In the fall of 1359, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Ursula. But Alexandria did not survive the birth.

Will the family be able to survive a second devastating death in one year? How will a household with a baby, toddler, child, young teen, and one widow function?

Following on from the simple modesty of the 1300s, female hair in the 1400s became a lot more elaborate thanks to the addition of hair pieces, ribbon and other decorations. Braided styles evolved into very detailed and decorative concoctions. Styles also became more flowy and romantic, often with curls framing the face. CC links under the cut.

Cloth Diapers for Infants

I use @teanmoon’s tied cloth diaper all the time for the toddlers in my ultimate decades challenge and I needed a version for infants, so I decided to edit my own. Unlike the original, the knot here is not 3D because I can’t mesh but also the 2D knot works better for infants I think. This just uses the bg infant diaper mesh with an edit of teanmoon’s texture.

Year 1315

It is the dreaded year 1315. This year marks the start of the Great Famine. Oh boy. For the 3 years of the Famine the family cannot grow any crops, they must sell all of their livestock, and they can only eat one meal a day. It is going to be an adjustment. In addition to the big event, there were a few birthdays of note. The oldest living generation 2 child, Leif Payne, aged up to a teen and survived his roll. One of Arne and Petra's children, Rogue Payne, aged up into a child successfully. Arne and Petra also had their adult birthdays and those were also successful. Onto the next!

Rowntree Ultimate Decades Challenge - 1358

1358 was a good year, with multiple birthdays and the start of a pregnancy.

Alexandria found out she is pregnant and told Arthur, who was thrilled. While Alexandria was happy to have another child, she was fearful of physically going through pregnancy again. Her husband's love eased her worries but she still suffered from the discomfort.

Kymmie has been getting closer to Touilda Bridgford, Alexandria's sister. Kymmie and Touilda clicked the moment they met, and are now becoming close friends and hanging out often. Kymmie also has a crush on Touilda! She doesn't know it yet, and just thinks she wants to befriend her. However, Kymmie is starting to realize she wants more than a friendship, which is terrifying...

Because of Kymmie and Touilda's "friendship" the Rowntrees have been visiting the Bridgfords more often, so Sarah is finally making friends her own age with the Bridgford kids, and Alexandria is staying close to her sister.

We also had a couple birthdays. Sarah aged up to a teen!

Jacquette also aged up to a toddler and looks really adorable. However, she got the mumps, so her toddlerhood has been pretty miserable so far.

Besides the mumps, everyone has been mostly happily attending to their usual tasks. This year has been unusually lucky, they all think.

The 1400s gave way to the incredibly iconic accessories of the 1500s, namely hoods (both Gabled and French) and ruffs. While the end of the Tudor era saw the popularity of headdresses decline in favour of uncovered hair decorated with jewels, diadems, and feathers, prior to that headdresses were a vital part of court dress. In fact, the style of hood worn was often used as a political statement amongst the nobility. Hats had always been in fashion for men, but the 16th century saw them also become a fashion staple for women. CC links and reference images under the cut.

Are there any other wizarding families that are underexplored in canon and pique your interest in a similar way to the Blacks?

This is a unique function of what food my brain worms like to eat, but no one's doing it like the Blacks. The drama? The intrigue? The Gothic horror? The prodigal sons and lost daughters and killers and sinners and martyrs and saints? The wizard Catholicism of it all? The story of the House of Black is the best book never written.

#i do think the potters could benefit from fleshing out #like harry's got no cousins or grandparents on his dad's side and that's weird to me #because his parents were... 22? so... how early did james's parents die? and how? because they're not old enough for natural causes #though to be honest. if i could add one backstory to canon it wouldn't be the potters OR the blacks #it would be peter pettigrew and the story of his betrayal #most important decision in the whole fucking series. lynchpin of the novels' decade-spanning plot #and it's like. whoops. motivation machine broke! #WHY did he do it? we have no mcfucking clue #the potters and blacks are cool to think about but ultimately just extra dressing for the plot #understanding peter pettigrew is crucial to understanding why the novels happen and we simply don't! #EDIT: just remembered the pottermore canon that the Potters have james when they're much older and that's why they're not around #that's not satisfying to me for 2 reasons 1: wizards canonically have longer-than-normal lifespans #and 2: doesn't explain how/why the Evanses disappear after Lily's death #like I'm not saying they COULDN'T die — obviously could! my grandparents were all dead before my 20s #but that was like. cancer. and in one case aggressively accelerated liver failure #just like a throwaway line or something to clear it up would've been cool #since it's not so much a plot hole as a plot pothole #we can get over it but shit's smoother without
