Horror and Location
Do you recognise that tight feeling in your chest and the crawling feeling in your gut whenever you see a spooky place? That’s fear. And the fear is caused by that location. There are many iconic locations in the horror genre that almost become their own character: from the infamous Elm Street House[1] to the cold, unforgiving nature of the U.S.C.S.S Nostromo[2] and small towns in Maine, horror and location go hand in hand.
Location can be one of the aspects of a horror story that stick with you more than anything else. Mark Kermode, an English film critic and musician, says: ‘Horror movies are full of people going places they really shouldn’t. If people didn’t go into “the scary place”, horror movies would be a lot shorter, and a lot less frightening.’[3]. Horror films tend to be the least expensive films produced, at least where Blumhouse is concerned, so if the film is going to be low budget, the location can end up being the most important part of the production as it helps to set the mood of the whole film, regardless of whether or not the location is naturally occurring or manmade. One of the most terrifying horror settings for me are the dark caves that house the humanoid creatures in The Descent[4]. The Descent follows six women who go spelunking together, however, they end up entering the wrong cave system and struggle to survive against the creatures living inside. The reason why this is so terrifying to me is because I suffer from claustrophobia and the thought of getting stuck in a dark cave system is horrible enough, never mind the disgusting monsters lurking in the dark that want to eat me.
Stephen King is notorious for setting the majority of his stories in various fictitious locations around Maine in the USA. The first reason for this is simply because King grew up in Maine so setting his stories in a pace that he is familiar with makes sense. It would have more easily allowed him to have more control over the reader’s imagination as familiarity would have enabled him to better describe the locations to us. Secondly, Maine is arguably a great spot for horror because of its atmosphere. Maine is a foggy place, perfect for something spooky to hide in the fog and follow you unseen. A third reason could simply be because Maine has the classic, creepy small town tone. It houses many old fashioned looking gas stations and stores which can help with that out of touch and isolated feeling that can help to get one in the mood for some spooks.
Overall, a good location for a horror story is one of the most important components that make a good story. This is evidenced by the fact that many horror stories, both as pieces of fiction and non-fiction, can have places linked back to them, or be based on actual events and locations. These locations can become their own characters and be almost as important as the main characters or the main villains. They can often be the heart of the story or the reason why the story actually exists.

U.S.C.S.S Nostromo
