"MINIATURE SUBMARINES, a Shinto Shrine, chopsticks and Jap characters and wrecked Zeroes were all left behind by the hastily departing enemy on Kiska. American bombs that preceded our troop landings accounted for much of the damage to Jap installations. Sgt. Edmond Birdsell of San Francisco tries out the chopsticks on a bowl of Jap rice, stores of which were found by U.S. forces." - from the Kingston Whig-Standard. September 9, 1943. Page 2.

“Midget Japanese Two-Man Submarine Captured By U.S. Defenders of Pearl Harbor No Longer Secret,” Toronto Star. January 28, 1942. Page 3. ---- HIGH AND DRY SUB GIVES U.S. FORCES IMPORTANT DATA When Japan flung the full fury of her naval and air forces against Hawaii and particularly Pearl Harbor, much was heard of their fleet of tiny submarines which were reported to have inflicted heavy damage on ships in the harbor. This view of the two-man Jap submarine taken by the U.S., Dec. 7 reveals its size and length-wise construction. The propeller end is on the right.
RAIDING PARTIES OVER FOR THIS UNDERSEA MENACE The conning-tower, LEFT, interests a U.S. army officer. Many other details of construction were carefully examined when the captive sub was pulled up high and dry. The propeller blades, CENTRE, are protected by a ring of steel and protruding guards, while the submarine’s nose on the RIGHT is also protected. The figure-eight contrivance is a guard against underwater nets and shield caps cover the torpedo tubes.
