Through the Looking Glass

From fairytale in Season 1 to stark reality in Season 2 of Our Flag Means Death- meta ported across from this Twitter thread by popular demand!

This thread contains spoilers for the entirety of OFMD Season 2

First OFMD S1 rewatch since S2, and holy shit, if you haven't done that yet... do that. A thing that it made instantly clear: they told us *all along* where this was going, but there was a reason we didn't see it. Because we were living in Stede's world then. Now it's Ed's.

I know that a lot of us have felt that the tone shift at the end of S2 was... jarring, compared to what's come before. This felt like a show that wouldn't go there. One where being run through was a temporary hiccup. We've travelled all the way from this to this.

But we haven't jumped there without a journey in between. And from the minute we started hearing about Blackbeard, the show never tried to hide what Ed's world and his specific life was like. Not once. In fact they told us over and over and over.

But Season 1 told us a lot of those things through song and story and fuckery. It blended reality with fiction.

Stede met the Blackbeard he knew through books and tall tales, and the real man was even more wonderful than he'd imagined.

We, along with Stede, were comfortable thinking that all those other tales were exaggerations and misrepresentations, and a lot of them very likely were.

The Ed Stede got to know was a person who was capable of whimsy and silliness and loved soft things and doing something weird. Yep, he was also capable of violence and rage, but when he was with Stede, he didn't feel it so much.

This was a vacation from that life.

To Stede he was absolutely lovely... oh, and also a bloodthirsty killer. And Stede loved (and loves) everything about him, and both of those things can be true. This is a perfect example of a spot where (in watching Season 1 without the benefit of hindsight) I assumed that everyone else in that pub was wrong, and Stede was simply trying to protect Ed's fearsome reputation by agreeing on the bloodthirsty bits. And I think from Stede's perspective that was largely true. I think that's how they wanted us to see Ed, through his eyes. Now, after watching both seasons, I think it wasn't the whole picture.

They told us, we heard it, we saw glimpses of it. But we (and Ed) were in Stede's run-away-to-sea fairytale the whole time. It wasn't until Stede left that we saw the reality- the Ed we knew had been, to a degree, a fictional character all along. I always saw this scene as Ed putting a bit of distance between himself and reality; it always felt like the Blackbeard of Stede's storybooks was the fictional one. But now it feels like the softer Ed that Stede knew was much the same- neither of them the whole story of who Ed was and is.

The one person who refused to live in Stede's fairytale was Izzy. I've seen people say it before, but he always gave off that vibe of the only human in the Muppets movie, or the guy who was in Black Sails while everyone else was in Pirates of the Caribbean. He saw the real risks clearly.

And in that light, the end of S1 has shifted an inch to the left for me, and I'm seeing it at a slightly different angle.

Izzy ripped away the healing Ed was doing, but in some respects he did it by tearing away the fairytale we'd all been living in, shoving Ed back into the Blackbeard story.

And that's where we pick up again in Season 2.

The fairytale reference came back in S2 in two notable places, those being Jim carrying that legacy forward in the darkest times, and in Izzy invoking the wooden boy against Ricky's efforts. Stede's made himself into a real boy. Ricky, nope.

Now that I've watched both seasons together, the tone shift doesn't feel so jarring at all, actually.

It feels like sliding through the looking glass, out of Stede's world, and into Ed's- a world that existed all along; we were just seeing it, la vie en rose, through Stede's eyes.

At the beginning of S2, Stede's gone, and we're seeing it unfiltered through Ed's reality.

But Stede wasn't lying when he said he loved everything about Ed. He made a promise to come back and find him- he went down into Ed's darkest place and reminded him that no matter how bad things got, there WAS someone waiting for him, ready to love him.

The contrast between S1's fantasy and S2's reality (excluding mermaids and actual bird guys and cursed coats) is stark, but it really is that.

We have the same settings, the same people, and very different ideas and outcomes at different times.

But it was always there.

Things do come back to a state of (precarious) balance once they're all together. Apologies are made, whether they're spoken out loud or through actions. Things go right, things go wrong. Healing happens. Izzy continues to have the steadiest, most real through-line in the story as he tracks toward redemption, finds acceptance, and to an extent finds himself.

Once again, I hate that they went here with the ending and I wish they hadn't. But it got a fraction easier for me looking at it not as a continuation of Stede's fairytale, but of the grounded-in-pirate-reality arc Izzy was always on, even while we lived in Stede's world.

Where does that leave us? We're not going back to the fairytale, but we're not going to be living in Black Sails for S3, either. We've hit a fusion point where S1 ended with each of them going to separate, miserable homes, but S2 ended with them in the same place, ready and willing to make a go of it.

Season 3 is going to give us their world, together.

I LOVED the moments in this season where the deep emotions were in balance with the silliness I've always adored about this show. Eps4-6 were wonderful like that. Clearly we're not done with drama, either, but like Ed and Stede, I think we'll find a middle ground.

Anyway in conclusion, a rewatch of S1 after S2 somehow made me love the first season even more, which felt impossible? It's now gained /even more/ layers of depth than it had before. No matter how you feel about S2 I think it's worth that rewatch.

Adding one more bit of clarity for myself: I think we got a bit (intentionally) seduced in S1 by the idea that the Ed of the storybooks, the Vampire Viking Clown with the nine guns, was a version of him that others saw, when Stede saw the REAL person who 'worked' for Blackbeard.

In hindsight I think it's clear the Ed Stede go to know was also not the complete version of himself- the reality is, there's a whole spectrum between the two, and they've landed in the middle of it now. Ed intentionally leaned into the unlovable Kraken image to protect himself.

It very much didn't work, just like being just... Edward hadn't worked to protect himself, either. This season has been very much about pulling those two extremes together and finding all the parts that make up Ed overall (another thread on that here on Twitter, which I'll also shift across to Tumblr soon!)

And I think one of my favourite things in S2 has been seeing the way Stede SEES that- he knows what Ed's done, everyone's told him, but he still loves Ed. sees his trauma and how it affects him, and believes he's a good man regardless. He IS lovable; he's not forever broken.

And together, they can heal.

However, he made a ranking list and the best place is the dining room floor

Finds it funny yet very disciplining, might use it as a punishment for when he misses workout sessions

Will carry you to bed with him cause again….he aint doin that shit

When you fall asleep on him, he just becomes a big ole teddy bear

If he needs to argue or tell someone off, he’ll whisper yell

Will make sure that you are warm by wrapping his hoodie over you

Once you’re asleep, Eddie will never move you or himself

Stuck In The Middle - Part 8

Hook x Y/N x Ricky Starks

Part 7

A few days go by, and the pictures have stopped popping up, but the rumors are still flying. How will Y/N move on from this debacle?

Ruby and Willow tried their best to distract me from the pictures and rumors swirling around online during our girl's day, but every time I checked the time on my phone, I got wucked back in. Eventually, Ruby and I switched phones, and the 3 of us were able to relax and somewhat forget the outside world.

Ruby and I switched phones back when I left for the airport, but not before she got rid of any notifications she deemed as unnecessary. I had a few texts from family members, and that was about it. By then, the pictures weren't popping up every second on Instagram and Twitter, so I was able to scroll through and catch up with whatever I missed fairly well. I flew back home and got settled in at my house before starting my weekly chores.

Later that night, I was playing a game on my phone when I got a text notification. It was Ricky, so I hesitated but eventually clicked on it.

Hey, just checking in on you. Wanted to make sure you made it home safe.

I smiled to myself before replying to him

Yep, just doing laundry and cleaning up for now. Thanks for checking!

I go back to my game for a bit before a hear the notification again.

Great! I have been thinking about your publicity issue, and I think if we go out in a group next week, it could help negate those rumors flying about.

I hummed to myself as I thought about it.

Who all would go and where?

You, me, Hook, Garcia, Skye, Ruby, Dante, Darius, Willow, etc. Whoever you want to invite. We could go out to a bar or dinner, depending on how we are feeling.

I shrug before looking into the places around the arena and hotel we are booked for next week.

I found a nice Italian restaurant a couple blocks from our hotel and a club a few blocks in the other direction. We can figure it out next week. Thanks for thinking of me, Ricky!

I go back to playing my games until I get ready for bed and fall asleep after cleaning all day.

Ricky's POV

I groan as I read Y/N's last text to me. I know she doesn't want to date anyone right now, but I can't help but let my feelings develop for her. I know this is going to be a tricky task as I am going to want to sit next to her and talk to her, but so will Hook.

I see Garcia's face pop up on my screen, and I answer his FaceTime.

"Hey Ricky, what's up, man? You look a little down."

I groan and rub my hand over my face. "Daniel, I think I'm actually falling for her."

Garcia snickers a bit. "You say that every time you meet a new woman. What makes her different from the others?"

"I can't explain it. I just want to do anything to make her happy."

Garcia stares at me for a few seconds before sighing. "Damn, Ricky might actually be falling in love. Never thought I would see the day."

"Oh fuck off Daniel... you know I'm bound to settle down sooner or later, but she makes me want to settle down now."

Garcia's eyes grow wide at my confession. "You barely even know her, Ricky. You sat together on a plane and had a couple of run-ins at work. She could be psychotic for all we know!"

I rolled my eyes and told him about my idea of a group hangout next week.

"Well, you better not get too close, or else the rumors might start up about the two of you next!"

I smirked at him through the phone screen before replying, "Same better go for Hook, though. If she said she doesn't want to date anyone, then he needs to back off as well. Let her make her own decisions."

Daniel smirks watching me get all riled up about this before we change the subject and stay on FaceTime for about an hour talking about our upcoming matches and whatnot.

Y/N's POV - Monday

Over the past few days, I have spoken to Ruby, Willow, and Skye about the group outing idea, and they all agreed to join. We decided it might be fun to go to the zoo in the morning since we will be in San Diego. Then we will get ready at our hotels and go out for dinner or whatever the boys want to do. Ruby and I are rooming together this trip, and we are both heading to the airport soon. I finish up packing before locking up my house and heading to the airport.

The flights to San Diego were decent, but unfortunately, my luggage seems to have e gotten lost. I groan as I watch the carousel stop signaling all of the bags that have been dispersed. I hear a light chuckle behind me and slowly turn around to see a man in a black hoodie eating chips.

"Hook, this isn't funny. I don't have my luggage, that means no clothes, no toiletries, no chargers!"

He hides his smirk behind the chip bag before eating another one and nodding towards me. "That's why I stick with a carry-on."

I roll my eyes at him, "I have too much shit for a carry-on. You probably have a couple of outfits, ring gear, chips, and a few toiletries. I have extra shoes, makeup, hair products, and jewelry, too."

He shakes his head slightly, "You don't need makeup. The Glam Squad can get you camera-ready, but you don't need it off camera at all. Also, I have hair products as well. How else do you expect me to create this masterpiece?"

I reach up and ruffle his hair, making him squirm away. "Well, if you are going to be that way, I guess I will let someone else who lost their luggage borrow my extra hoodie."

I reach back up to help him fix his hair as I see bright green hair out of the corner of my eye. "Ruby, thank goodness you are here! They lost my luggage, so I have nothing now."

Ruby skeptically looked between Hook and I before shaking her head. "It's happened to me a couple of times. Let's go to the store and get you some necessities."

I nod and turn to leave before realizing I haven't invited Hook to Thursdays activities. "Hey Hook, if you aren't busy on Thursday, a few of us are going to the zoo in the morning and then going out that evening. You are more than welcome to join us!"

He nods as he thinks about it. "Sounds like it could be fun. So it will be you two and who else?"

"Well, right now, it is us, Willow, and Skye, but we are going to invite Ricky, Garcia, and Eddie as well. You can bring the lads if you would like!"

I can see his jaw clench when I mention Ricky, but he quickly redirects himself and smiles as he pulls out his phone. "I'll text them now and ask. See you ladies later!"

We walk in opposite directions as Ruby and I go towards the Uber station. "Well, well, well. Not looking for a relationship, huh?"

I look at her confused before she continues. "You are lucky there were no fans to take pictures of you intimately fixing his hair."

I try to smack her jokingly, but she jogs ahead and jumps the Uber. This will definitely be an interesting trip.

The whole jungle jack boy Perry discourse on Twitter is nauseating because alot of it is viewing it in binary, black or white, 1s and 0s.

You've got the anti elite camp digging into JP because he is a poor promo, but more because he's shat on their saviour CM Punk, and these people are slippery sloping into the cornettes rhetoric which is obviously biased against any pro elite/friends with the bucks.

But then you have the pro elite folk who are completely denying the fact JP has bombed here in his main event push, and this angle does feel weak, and there are guys like Ricky starks who would do an infinite better job right now.

I'm not saying that JP won't ever become a main event act but it's clear as Crystal to see he isn't ready for it, but he's also still a fucking great wrestler and id much rather see him as TNT champ atm than Wardlow.

Sometimes you try and it just doesn't work out, and this to me is a case of AEW risking it and it not paying off.

Summary: Hook and Danhausen fight, but the fight leads to a confession

Hook hadn't meant to yell at Danhausen, and he certainly didn't mean to upset him. They were in their shared hotel room, Hook was scrolling through Twitter as Danhausen sat next to him, talking about anything that came to mind. That's what annoyed Hook, Danhausen just wouldn't shut up. Hook had grown tired of the other man's nonstop rambling, he couldn't take it anymore.

Danhausen was telling some story about how him and Britt Baker collected teeth when Hook finally cracked, he yelled at Danhausen. Hook went on a rant about how all Danhausen did was talk and he was sick of it. Danhausen sat there, silently listening to his best friend, the man he loves, yelling about how he annoys him. So, Danhausen got up, grabbed his things and left with tears in his eyes. Where he was going, neither man knew, but it didn't matter. All that mattered was that Hook fucked up, big time.

Hook had sat on the bed of their hotel room after Danhausen left, silently cursing himself for yelling at him. "Fuck" he whispered to himself before grabbing his phone and calling Ricky.

"Hey, Ricky? Um, I-Uh, I fucked up. Really bad" "Wait, Hook, what happened? Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Hook paused for a moment before responding,"No, I'm not hurt. I-I hurt someone though. It's Danhausen, I yelled at him and it wasn't on purpose but I feel like a shit person and I-" Hook, slow down, you're rambling. Calm down a little, it's okay"

Hook took a few deep breaths before speaking once again, "Ricky, I yelled at Danhausen and he was crying when he left. I don't know where he went and I need to find him, I don't want to lose him. Ricky please help me find him" He cursed himself silently, he thought he sounded hopeless. "I'll be over in a second, jus' gotta get shoes on" Hook breathed out a thanks and hung up, waiting for Ricky.

Ricky and Hook searched the entire hotel for Danhausen, they didnt find him. Until they passed Ethan Page's room. They heard his voice breaking as he told Ethan about what happened. "Ricky, thank you for helping but I need to do this alone" Ricky nodded and walked away.

Hook walked up to the door, running a hand through his hair before knocking. Ethan answered and, without either men saying a word, steps aside to allow Hook to enter the room. In no time, Hook is wrapping his arms around Danhausen, crying into his shoulder, muttering apologies. Danhausen is speechless, he thought Hook hated him, so why was he so upset?

"I'm so fucking sorry, D" Hook whimpered into the older man's neck, earning a small 'no swearing' from Danhausen. Hook pulled away from Danhausen, tears on his face. Danhausen wipes them off his cheeks as he pulls Hook in for another hug. Hook pulled away faster this time, something on his mind.

"Danhausen I need to tell you something and uh, I've been wanting to say it for a while. I-uh I, aw fuck it" Hook grabbed Danhausen's face and pulled him in, their lips crashing together, Danhausen's hands finding their way to Hook's waist. Danhausen pulls away first, smiling at Hook. "Danhausen feels the same way, Hook" Hook smiled as wide as possible, leaning in for another kiss, before Ethan decides to break it up, "Okay guys! Congrats on confessing your feelings now get the hell out of my room so I can sleep" He said before kicking them out, both of them giggling.

They walked back to their room holding hands.

Conclusion

Well that was a lot of fun.

Compared to No Mercy it was perhaps marginally better for me, again this could be due to being more in the loop with the storylines but stuff like the trios match, the main event, Swerve vs Hangman, the ultimate tekkers match it just clicked. Not a bad match on the card too, though I was rooting for Aussie Open to win, but Bucks/FTR IV will still be great. Plus I still wanted to see Statlander body slam Brody.

I do hope Fénix is okay, he disappeared from the 4-Way and he's the International champion, don't want back to back injury-induced title changes after all. But it was good to see Moxley just out there enjoying himself on the side, probably won't ever get to do it again mind you given all the cussing but still, did elevate the matches.

We've got intriguing directions too; Swerve needs to get somewhere with that W over Hangman (world title? I mean I kinda like Jay White for it, International Title? Maybe too soon), Claudio and Bryan have extended rematch invitations and you know Ricky ain't done with the BCC (still though I wouldn't put him in the BCC, Garcia should have that spot), even the Zero Hour did some development with Billie and Athena's dynamic.

So yeah, probably not better than All In and All Out but still pretty damn good, Inoki would be proud.

Match of the Night: I mean it's the Ultimate Battle of Epic Tekkers right? Hard to really say any match was better than that wrestling-wise. The Main Event is a close second with the drama. Best Entrance: Julia Hart gets this one just ahead of Adam Copeland's worst kept secret, not many flashy entrances in this show, in fact I think OC/Hook and Jericho didn't even get entrances. Best Attire: Again, not many here, most of them were kinda subtle so I'm gonna give it to Swerve so I can give him props somewhere. Best Performance: Tie for Bryan and Zack, masters of their craft, not much else you can say. Spot of the Night: Because Christian dropping Darby on the steps was messy and scrappy, it's Bryan's Dragon Screw that just looked so vicious like I'm sure I saw his foot facing another direction.
