Guild Wars 2: Random Trivia About the Crystal Desert
Hello, fellow lore nerds! I’ve been a busy little Branded this past month: getting back into my college routine, doing a bit more creative writing than usual, and engaging in a fun-but-exhausting new activity my sister calls... “socializing”.
Still, I wanted to find time to cover PoF around here -- I’ve had a couple little side projects cooking, and with Path of Fire just one day away (!!!), I was planning something extra special for you guys. It was gonna be a beginner’s guide to the continent of Elona: background information about the region, its history, inhabitants and whatnot. To make sure everyone’s on the same page, and knows the backstory going in.
Oh, it would have been magnificent. If only Arenanet hadn’t beaten me to the punch by doing the exact same thing, but way better and several days early.
It put me in a bit of an awkward position. What’s a lore nerd to do when his purpose has been fulfilled? With whom do I share my bounty of knowledge?
And then I realized what I had known in my heart all along... I don’t need a reason to share pointless trivia about a world I love. To share pointless trivia is its own reward, I say! So, rather than step on Arenanet’s toes by doing the same thing they did, I decided to build on top of it. Because Arenanet’s post, as well-written as it was, didn’t dive into what makes Elona such a fun place to hang around in -- its depth. So many smaller details, not central to the story, but adding that extra layer of uniqueness crucial to making a setting memorable.
So that’s my mission here: show off the more obscure plot elements that make Elona such a cool place to be. Things I hope to see touched on, even if it’s just in a bit of throwaway dialogue. I hope y’all enjoy, and if all goes well, tomorrow I’ll be seeing you on the first ship to Amnoon!
The Junundu
Tumblr media
To start with something vaguely relevant: a while back, you might have noticed that the Wurms on the Tarnished Coast were looking a little... different. That turned to be because of a really weird bug, which swapped out the Jungle Wurm model for something else. A model just added to the client.
What is it, you ask? Turns out it’s one of the most feared beasts in all of Elona: The Junundu Wurm.
The Junundu are massive, hardy creatures, one of the few living things able to survive in the Desolation. According to Elonian legend, Palawa Joko tried to tame them, turn them into beasts of war for his conquest of Vabbi. But he failed, so he set them loose across his kingdom. Over the years, though, others have had better luck. During the events of Nightfall, the Sunspears were able to tame a small group of Junundu and use them to cross the Desolation safely.
Yes, this is the reason I got so excited by the idea of mounts. Who doesn’t want to ride an enormous, all-devouring Sand Wurm? I’d name her Kirby.
The Abandoned Superweapon
Tumblr media
The Crystal Desert is filled with ruins. Before Joko took over, the Elonians were constantly trying to settle the place, drawn to Augury Rock and the possibility of Ascension. Some were killed by the Forgotten protecting the place, but at least one colony destroyed themselves. A civil war broke out over the Crystal Desert’s dwindling resources, and in desperation, one side created a weapon capable of wiping out the entire settlement. Under unknown circumstances, the weapon was activated, and both sides of the conflict ceased to exist.
What happened to the weapon afterward? Well, for a couple centuries, it just sort of... sat there, in the middle of The Arid Sea. An armed, perfectly functional superweapon, forgotten by everyone. Even Arenanet themselves forgot about it for a little while -- the quest content about the relic had to be cut from Prophecies due to time constraints. And so, for another two centuries, it sat.
Don’t worry, though -- it was eventually recovered by the Durmand Priory and stored in Special Collections, alongside other lost relics like the Holy Grail, Zhaitan’s tail and Ogden Stonehealer. Tyria is safe... for now.
Teleporters
Tumblr media
You modern Tyrians are spoiled, what with your newfangled Asura Gates and fancy shmancy Waypoints. Back in my day, we had to walk to our destination, and we walked uphill both ways! Unless, that is, we were in the Crystal Desert. Then we kind of had it covered.
While one Crystal Desert colony was busy constructing the most devastating Indiana Jones reference of all time, another was busy revolutionizing desert commerce. Using magic, they figured out how to transport objects instantly between one point and another -- the same technology found in asuran Waypoints, centuries before the asura were ever encountered on the surface. They spent years constructing a network of these “Teleporters”, making life in the area much easier for anyone that knew how to activate them. When their great work was complete, they proceeded to suddenly and anticlimactically die out, just like all the others.
Tragically, with nobody left to repair them, the technology behind the Teleporters degraded with time. They now stand as little more than a pretty addition to the desert scenery, and a lasting reminder to us all that humans aren’t nearly as dumb as the asura keep insisting we are.
Ancestor Trees
Tumblr media
Ventari wasn’t the only centaur with a love of nature. Elonian centaurs, like the Veldrunner and Losaru prides, were staunch nature-lovers themselves. In fact, much of local centaur culture revolved around their so-called “Ancestor Trees”.
According to centaur mystics, the spirits of centaur elders would congregate around these places. Eager to teach the next generation, these spirits blessed the fruit of these trees, imparting their knowledge and wisdom on those lucky enough to get a bite. Somewhat rare, being magic and all, they were highly sought after by Elonians, and vigorously defended by the centaurs.
Most Ancestor Trees were burned or abandoned during Nightfall, when Abaddon’s forces attacked and enslaved many of the centaur prides. At least one survived with help from the Sunspears, but I’m interested to see what happened afterward. Have Ancestor Trees flourished across Elona once again, or has Palawa Joko chosen to uproot them once and for all?
The Order of Whispers
Tumblr media
Wait, who let these guys in here!? They aren’t Elonian!
...Or at least, they aren’t Elonian anymore.
In the modern day, the Order of Whispers is dedicated to defending Tyria from the Elder Dragons. But few know that this wasn’t their original purpose. The Order of Whispers was originally based in Elona, founded by Turai Ossa himself. Their mission? Guard Palawa Joko’s tomb at all costs. Ensure that he never rises to threaten Vabbi again. And stop anyone who tries to set him free.
They were good at their jobs -- so good, in fact, that almost nobody outside the Order even knew where the tomb was. But all good things come to an end, and the end came in Nightfall. With Abaddon poised to break free of his prison, the Sunspears needed a way to stop him. The problem? That final climactic battle was going to occur at the Mouth of Torment, smack-dab in the middle of the Desolation. No living thing could cross that sulfurous wasteland intact. But there was one being that knew how they might be able to manage it.
Palawa Joko would tell them. He would tell them all about the Junundu, and how they might be tamed. But first they had to set him free. The Order didn’t like it, but they knew it wouldn’t matter in the end if Abaddon wiped them all out. So the deal was made, and Joko returned.
A hundred years later, the Order was fleeing for their lives. Vabbi, Kourna and Istan had all surrendered to Joko’s forces, and at long last, his enemies were being purged. To survive, they hopped on a boat and fled to mainland Tyria. There they found a civilization under siege on all sides, and a new purpose.
But with the path to Elona open once again, I can’t help but wonder... what do they make of their first, greatest failure? And do they plan on setting it right?
The Mordant Crescent
Tumblr media
The Sunspears might have freed Palawa Joko, but they didn’t like him very much. The feeling was mutual -- Joko knew the Sunspears would defy him when he made his play for Vabbi, and that’s exactly what they did in the end. Unfortunately, they failed, and for their failure, they suffered the worst of Joko’s wrath. Joko had them hunted mercilessly, one by one, and the hunt was led by an order of his own: the Mordant Crescent.
Ever a fan of irony, Joko formed the Crescent exclusively out of traitors to the Sunspear Order. He had a lot of them on-hand after the conquest of Vabbi. Many in the Order believed their cause was hopeless, and so defected to the winning side. Some did it for power. Some did it for immortality. Some did it to protect their families. Joko didn’t care about their motivations. As long as they were willing to hunt down their former allies, he would accept them.
All members of the Mordant Crescent are powerful necromancers, and granted far more autonomy than Joko usually allows. This is by design -- Joko already has plenty of mindless minions to go around, after all. What he wants out of the Crescent is something far more dangerous: Heroes. Wandering adventurers that protect Joko’s interests on their own initiative, with the same cunning, creativity and determination that had always been employed against him in the past.
Much like us? No. Exactly like us. Like the rest of Elonian culture, we too have been reforged in Palawa Joko’s image.
Tomorrow, ladies and gentlemen, we travel to one of the richest settings in the history of the Guild Wars franchise. For those of us that have been there before, it’ll be a nostalgia trip like no other. And for those of you who have never had the pleasure, I hope this post gave you a little taste of why I’m so excited.
See you tomorrow, and may the Six Five bless you!

BLESZ PARTS WITH KME – Blesz is no longer a KME artist just after few months Markmuday left the label It another episode yet again from the country’s biggest record label, the Kabaka Multimedia & Entertainment (KME), for us to witness the departure of one of the label’s finest singers – Blesz. This came about three months after one of its best (Markmuday) was controversially or allegedly ‘driven’ out by the CEO of KME – Abu Bakarr Turay aka Kabaka. The news about Blesz leaving came as a surprise to many music lovers after the artist made the announcement on his Facebook in the late hours of Sunday 28th July, 2019. Blesz didn’t however stated any reason for leaving nor did he mention his destination, but wished his former mates and fans well. It reads as such below : “I’M OFFICIALLY LEAVING KME.” “FIRSTLY I WANT TO SAY BIG THANKS TO ALL MY FANS WHO HELD ME DOWN WHILE IN KME, ALSO APOLOGIZING FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE MY EXIT MAY HAVE CAUSE YOU.” “AND TO MY FAMILY Kracktwist, I Tribe I Tribe, Future K, Samza, Rozzy, CEO, manager Dudu MUCH LOVE FOR RIDING WITH ME THROUGH THESE PAST YEARS THE BOND WILL FOREVER CONTINUE AND I AM HAPPY TO SAY OUR GOOD AND HARD MEMORIES WE MADE, WAS WORTHWHILE. NOT FORGETTING ALL PROMOTERS, PRESENTERS, BLOGGERS ETC, FOR WORKING WITH ME WHILE IN KME AND I WANT TO ALLAY YOUR FEARS THAT OUR GOOD AND BROTHERLY RELATIONSHIP STILL REMAINS THE SAME. FINALLY I WANT TO CATEGORICALLY STATE THAT I HAVE NO BAD BLOOD OR BEEF WITH ANYONE OR CREW. I WILL BE FOCUSING ON MY MUSIC AND DO WHAT I DO BEST.” “I REMAIN FOREVER HUMBLED.” #thebleszway His departure has however been rumoured among some quarters of the music industry, some saying he was not happy how things were on his career and family. There are deep allegations about his family relationship with the CEO of the label. “Blesz was always unhappy but always finding it difficult to break silence. This is something he cannot easily speak about,” an anonymous music promoter told me. Kabaka has expressed how Blesz will be missed at KME but noted it was a pleasure working with him. Certainly gonna miss our guy Blesz D Blesz. Was a great pleasure working with you during your time in KME. Day 2 of the 2018 NFL Draft is in the books. Here’s a look at the early winners and losers, assessments that are certified to hold up to all scrutiny for years to come.
Winners
Mason Rudolph, QB, Steelers: While Rudolph surely would have loved to have gone in the first round, the Oklahoma State product might be better off having fallen to Pittsburgh at No. 76 overall. Learning behind Ben Roethlisberger and being surrounded by all the Steelers talent sets up Rudolph to succeed. He could wind up playing sooner than expected, considering Big Ben hasn’t played a full season since 2014.
The Steelers also drafted Rudolph’s college teammate, wide receiver James Washington, late in the second round. Based on general manager Kevin Colbert’s track record, it’s only a matter of time before Washington is torching NFL defenses. In a few years, he might be doing it with Rudolph.
Titans/Patriots intrigue: Fresh off signing two former Patriots players this offseason — cornerback Malcolm Butler and running back Dion Lewis — Titans GM Jon Robinson and coach Mike Vrabel might have taken another player or two from their old buddies during the draft. Robinson traded up to get in front of the Patriots with both of his first two picks: linebacker Rashaan Evans (No. 21 overall) and edge rusher Harold Landry (41), who Robinson said Friday had a grade “in the teens” for the Titans. There’s no way to know if New England would have drafted either player, but they both fit big Patriots needs and smelled like Patriots targets. Then again, Titans targets and Patriots targets are becoming hard to tell apart.
Running backs: The running back position is cool again! There was a run on the position near the top of the second round that made JerryWorld feel like a fantasy football draft room. It truly started Thursday night when Seattle picked San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny at No. 27, which kickstarted five backs being taken in a 17-pick span. Combine that streak with Saquon Barkley going No. 2 overall, and the conventional wisdom about not drafting running backs too high is fading away. Three-down running backs in today’s NFL can provide just as much value on the right team as a wideout or tight end, and the draft is starting to reflect that.
My favorite pick at the position Friday was USC running back Ronald Jones II landing with Tampa with the No. 38 overall pick. Jones is a home-run hitter, now on an explosive Bucs offense full of players just like him.
Chicago Bears: It’s hard not to love what the Bears have done this offseason, and that’s continued into the draft. Friday night included the addition of one of the top centers in the draft, James Daniels, and a wide receiver in Anthony Miller who has the skill set to produce right away. Miller’s route-running and toughness have drawn comparisons to Sterling Shepard, a player who made an instant impact at the pro level. (The Bears clearly loved Miller, giving up a 2019 second-round pick and a fourth-rounder this year to get the pick from the Patriots.)
General manager Ryan Pace has done an excellent job supplying coach Matt Nagy and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky with weapons all offseason, providing a clearer vision for the franchise than was ever apparent during the John Fox era.
Washington Redskins: Redskins radio analyst Chris Cooley said more than a week ago that the team’s ideal scenario was to land defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne and running back Derrius Guice. That was exactly what happened, when Guice surprisingly fell to the 57th pick in the draft. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Guice slid in part because of some poor visits with teams, who believed he was immature and high-maintenance. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero wrote about similar issues last week.
While Thursday and Friday were difficult days for Guice after being in the green room in Dallas on Thursday night, he landed in an ideal scenario. The Redskins have a solid offensive line, a clever play caller in Jay Gruden and no running back on the roster who can compare to Guice’s relentless Marshawn Lynch-like running style.
Mike Pettine, defensive coordinator, Packers: The Packers used their second-round pick (No. 45) on Josh Jackson, a physical first-round talent who was the second of two cornerbacks taken by Green Bay (including Jaire Alexander at No. 18 overall) thus far. The Packers have used an exceptional amount of high picks on players in the secondary in recent years, but Pettine’s track record says he’ll know what to do with them.
Indianapolis Colts: Colts GM Chris Ballard said Friday that he learned last season the Colts needed to get far tougher up front to compete in the AFC South. His draft picks on Friday made that clear. After trading back into Round 2 to acquire the 64th overall pick, Ballard wound up with an astounding four second-round selections. Including the Colts‘ first-rounder (guard Quenton Nelson at No. 6 overall), Ballard’s picks look like a fever dream for lovers of the trenches: guard (Nelson), linebacker (Darius Leonard), guard (Braden Smith), defensive end (Kemoko Turay) and defensive end (Tyquan Lewis).
This draft haul, which started with the Colts‘ trade down from No. 3 to No. 6 overall, will help shape Ballard’s tenure with the Colts. The emphasis on bullies up front should make Andrew Luck smile, along with the team’s current starter at running back, Marlon Mack. The Colts could be a logical destination for free-agent back C.J. Anderson after the team passed on selecting a runner Friday.
Losers
Carlos Hyde, RB, Browns: If Hyde was relieved Thursday night that the Browns passed on taking Saquon Barkley with either the first or fourth overall picks, the feeling didn’t last long. Cleveland’s selection of Georgia running back Nick Chubb at No. 35 was concerning for Hyde even before vice president of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith spoke Friday night.
“He exemplifies what we’re trying to build here in Cleveland,” Highsmith said, before comparing Chubb to Jamal Lewis.
Hyde signed a three-year contract in free agency, but his stay in Cleveland may wind up lasting about as long as Dwyane Wade’s cameo in the city this year.
Players with tough acts to follow: The Browns started the night by selecting tackle Austin Corbett (No. 33), who immediately was tagged as the guy who needs to replace future Hall of Famer Joe Thomas. Good luck! In the third round, the Cowboys drafted wide receiver Michael Gallup (No. 81), the team’s first pickup at the position since it released Dez Bryant.
You never want to be the guy who replaces the guy. You want to be the guy who replaces the guy who replaces the guy. It’s science.
Clarity for the Jimmy Garoppolo trade: San Francisco’s heist of Garoppolo from the Patriots last season could go down as one of the most lopsided trades in NFL history, a fact that may keep Bill Belichick up at night. Perhaps Belichick knew that the player drafted with the pick acquired in the Jimmy G trade (No. 42 overall) would face unfair comparisons for eternity, so Belichick traded back in the second round to throw everyone off the scent. Then he traded back again. Then he traded up to help ensure no one really remembers who the Patriots wound up selecting in the deal that sent away Tom Brady‘s would-be successor.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss helped break down the final haul, at least for now. The team essentially wound up dealing Garoppolo for the ability to eventually grab cornerback Duke Dawson (taken No. 56 overall), a 2018 fourth-round pick (No. 105) and Chicago’s 2019 second-round pick. If nothing else, the Patriots maximized their chances of hitting on another great player by turning the Jimmy G pick into three selections.
Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio was asked by a reporter in the half-joking manner that comprises most conversations in Massachusetts whether the Patriots did all that just to make life difficult for the scribes.
“You guys will parse that tomorrow; that’s not our job,” Caserio said with a smile. “We’re just looking at the picks, looking at the numbers and when trades come into play, we’ll take it as it comes.”
Cowboys fans: Trolling the home fans is my new favorite NFL draft tradition. Steelers and 49ers reps talked up their Super Bowl trophies to the booing Dallas crowd. Packers legend Jerry Kramer made an outstanding Ice Bowl reference that went over the heads of young Cowboys fans. Michael Vick said he never lost to Dallas, which was a beautiful moment even if it wasn’t exactly true. But the most entertaining speech came from former Eagles kicker David Akers, who returned serve after Cowboys great Drew Pearson trash-talked Eagles fans last year in Philadelphia.
“Hey Dallas! The last time you were in a Super Bowl, these draft picks weren’t BORN!” Akers said after the Eagles traded up in the second round to one spot ahead of the Cowboys.
Akers followed that by announcing the selection of tight end Dallas Goedert, the last premier player left from a position that is suddenly lacking on the Cowboys depth chart after surprising news emerged Friday of Jason Witten’s imminent retirement. No one said that hosting the NFL draft was going to be easy.

Foodcrafters, the founders of the massive seasonal food court Zaiqa-e-Ramzan and Pradeep Khosla, the name synonymous with Hyderabadi cuisine, former Executive Chef at Taj Krishna, who is now the Corporate Chef and CEO, together conceptualised a Hyderabadi specialty restaurant, Zaiqa-e-Hyderabad on Road No 3, Banjara Hills
Gone are the days when an enquiry for a good Hyderabadi specialty restaurant would elicit a standard response – sirf Hyderabadi Muslim gharon mein ya shaadi mein; and you would be left to wonder which friend of yours is getting married in the near future so that you can land up at the wedding and hog all the Hyderabadi khaana you want to. And except at few restaurants, you would hardly find haleem unless its the month of Ramzan. Paya/ Pathar ka Ghost – you will have to go all the way to the old city.
In recent times, there have been a couple of restaurants that have opened with a promise to serve authentic Hyderabadi food. Foodcrafters, the founders of the massive seasonal food court Zaiqa-e-Ramzan and Pradeep Khosla, the name synonymous with Hyderabadi cuisine, former Executive Chef at Taj Krishna, who is now the Corporate Chef and CEO, together conceptualised a Hyderabadi specialty restaurant, Zaiqa-e-Hyderabad on Road No 3, Banjara Hills. And if the increasing popularity of the outlet in just a few days of opening is anything to go by, they found the right way into a Hyderabadi’s heart.
An old clock on one wall, a Nizami jharokha on the other accosted by framed old pictures of Hyderabad, the lamp shades, the ceramic plates, Kalamkari design for the roof – the old world charm mixes well the contemporary set up at Zaiqa-e-Hyderabad.
From providing the glimpses of the historic Nizami city in the decor to conjuring up a menu that is a perfect balance between popular and signature dishes of the cuisine, many of which are not such a common occurrence in fine dining restaurants – Chef Pradeep Khosla has personally supervised each aspect of the outlet.
How can you define a good biryani? Well, it is that dish, which extracts a nod of approval and a murmur of satisfaction with each spoonful from a true blue-blooded Hyderabadi. And Zaiqa e Hyderabad gets it right – not overtly spicy or too bland, rice long and not too over cooked, the meat perfectly tender soaking in the flavours to perfection. There are four variants on the menu – Kacchi Yakhni biryani – the original lamb version, chicken dum biryani, subz biryani for the vegetarians and the Anda biryani. The simple raitha and the must have side dish to a biryani – the mirchi ka salan too are amazingly delicious here.
Hyderabadi cuisine is primarily Mughal cuisine that has imbibed the local flavours. So you have the kebabs that are common in name, but have those sometimes distinct and at other times minute Hyderabadi influences – the melt-in-the-mouth Shikampuri filled with onion, yoghurt and green chillies, the smoky Sona Zafrani tikka (chicken pieces marinated in saffron and slowcooked over charcoal) and  Murgh Malai kebab are must try on the starter menu. There is also the uniquely Hyderabadi invention of tender chicken pieces tossed in curry leaves and select spices – Chicken 65.
One should surely mention the haleem that is served with huge chunks of tender mutton pieces in it and topped with ghee and cashews that looks as delicious as it tastes; and the spicy marag, a primarily home preparation that has gained entry into the menu.
On the main course too are some dishes that are usually found only in traditional Muslim kitchens like the Mutton do pyaza, Kheema matar and Dal Tadka. Chef brings back the taste of royalty with rich and flavourful dishes like Asafjahi ghost korma and Lagan ke Murgh – the traditional dishes that get a touch of western influence, especially created to please the guests of the Nizam – make a comeback on Chef Khosla’s Zaiqa menu. There are also the likes of Bagara Baingan and Dum ka Paneer for the vegetarians.
On the desserts are the predictable, yet unmissable Qubani ka meeta, Double ka meetha, and also the Gajar ka rishta (made of grated carrots using nuts, saffron and pure ghee) and the soft and creamy Badam ka kund.
While the Zaiqa-e-Hyderabad menu takes care of the popular Hyderabadi preparations; every week there is a special menu available on alacarte. Through this menu, one discovers a cuisine that is popular, no doubt, but is showcased only thorough a handful of dishes, while the others lay in oblivion to most food lovers.
Talawa ghost, Aloo nazakat, Hare masale ka murgh khorma, Nawabi turai methi, Bagaare khatte aloo – chef has many other delicacies up his sleeve that would be featured on a special weekly menu. So, here’s to many more visits to devour the Hyderabadi food.
A part of the article was first published in The Hans India
The Taste of Hyderabad Foodcrafters, the founders of the massive seasonal food court Zaiqa-e-Ramzan and Pradeep Khosla, the name synonymous with Hyderabadi cuisine, former Executive Chef at Taj Krishna, who is now the Corporate Chef and CEO, together conceptualised a Hyderabadi specialty restaurant, Zaiqa-e-Hyderabad on Road No 3, Banjara Hills…
