Hanoi - Day ???

I keep telling myself “I’m going to write about the food” every damn meal. Then I get all excited about the next place we’re going to try and I tell myself that I should wait... so I’m waiting in perpetuum...

This is a post about turtles...

If I ever lead you to believe that I don’t like “touristy” things that is bold faced lie. I love touristy things when they are touristy things I like. If you ask me if I want to stand in line for an hour or so and pay 25€ to see some rare early works of Picasso I’d be like “ meeh”. Now if you ask me if I’d like to rescue a tiny future ninja for a mere 50,000₫ (VDN) only to set it free to an uncertain future in a polluted lake I’m all like “Hells Yasss!” I mean how is he to become a mutant?

So when walking along West Lake to the Trấn Quốc Pagoda we came upon woman selling these little critters just outside the entrance I was immediately curious. One of the women explained to us that setting them free in the lake is good luck, nuf said, I’m all in. She has in several bins turtles of different sizes and koi (?), the larger ones cost double and more but supposedly bestow better luck. I’ll take my chances with just a tiny dude, my luck is pretty good as it is and the larger ones are well ... larger.

Pretty soon me and future bad ass are bonding and he’s posing for Guillem but little dude seems impatient to get to the water. As he makes another dash for the edge of the known universe that is my hands I give him a little toss into what looks like a shallow spot clear of rocks, When he hits the water he is immediately consumed in a cloud of sediment, never to be seen again, possibly into path of a waiting turtle eating fish but I like to think somewhere under the streets of Hanoi he is picking the perfect color bandana and perfecting his use of throwing stars.
