So I was thinking of Zuko as a clearly scarred leader+Toph as a Beifong/teacher of Avatar+Teo, which all led me to thinking of war recovery including changes so there are accommodations for people who use wheelchairs, etc. Then, I was thinking of a Braille system of some kind being created+implemented, which led me to thinking about how the different nations would do it. And then I was thinking about the NWT+SWT. Based on research I see that different Inuit groups tend to use different stone for sculpting, and I know some do totem poles, and I know walrus ivory is used. So I guess I was thinking the SWT+NWT would probably do things differently. (I was thinking they would not do ice because ... having to touch ice? Would not be a cool accommodation.)

So, I was wondering what your thoughts are on this. Also, Do the SWT+NWT actually draw any inspiration from specific Inuit cultures/people’s? Or are the WN aesthetics just a mashup of different Inuit cultures/or a nebulous reference?

To answer your other asks, a good umbrella term is Circumpolar peoples. This covers all your bases and you can specify region, such as "from Greenland to Sibera" which I hear a lot in regards to the Inuit, Inupiat, and Yup'ik peoples.

That said, Circumpolar peoples don't do totem poles. Nations from the Pacific Northwest and southeast Alaska do, but we don't. You may be thinking of dance masks which can get incredibly intricate, especially the Yup'ik ones, but serve an entirely different purpose.

And now to go onto the actually questions. How would a fantasy version of Inupiaq culture do braille? Well, I'm not sure it would be entirely necessary. Unlike most of the cultures that the series takes inspiration from, we didn't really have paper or a written language pre-contact. We did use lampblack (burned animal fat in our case) for ink, but that was used for art and tattooing, not for writing words. Due to this lack of paper, our art was more three dimensional. It was beautiful fur clothes and dance masks, and figures carved of driftwood, ivory, stone, and scrimshaw. Etchings in baleen or ivory. You start at one end of the piece and "read" the story through interpreting the carved illustrations to the other end. We didn't really use signs for trails because there wasn't really a point. You would go that way your whole life and rarely ever completely alone.

But I suppose if I were to apply braille-esque signs to the Water Tribe anyway, I think they'd be treated as art pieces. The words, carved in driftwood or bone, or even baleen if you're feeling fancy, would be the most important part, but I don't think they could resist adding other designs that could be felt. I'm sure other accomodations were already worked into the culture. I'd find it hard to believe if snowblindness and having to travel in weather conditions so bad you can't see past your own nose weren't common among Water Tribesmen.

As for if they take inspiration from irl peoples, they definitely do, but I'd say it's more an amalgamation of various circumpolar peoples than any one particular group. Though many are quick to point out the Inuit influence on the aesthetic, I think it's fair to say just as much was taken from the Yup'ik peoples, shown in the photo below

This Kuskokwim Yup'ik couple was photographed in 1879. Note that these hoodless parkas are longer and have slimmer silhouettes than those you typically find in traditional Inuit dress, like the ones we see in the show.

There are also discriptions of traditional caps made of the skin of a wolf's head worn by Saint Lawrence Islanders, which may have inspired the wolf helms.

In Legend of Korra and the comics it seems they were trying to put a little more effort into referencing the Inuit and Inupiat through naming. Unalaq (from "Ungalaaqłiit") and Noatak (from "Nuataaq") are both named after Inupiaq villages. Tonraq likely comes from the Inuit word "tornaq" (our word for the concept is "tunģaaq") which is a land mammal spirit summoned by a shaman. Senna likely comes from Sedna, the most popular name for an armless woman in the ocean from Inuit myth, whose bones from her missing hands and forarms became all the creatures in the sea. If you perked up at this and said "there's an armless woman in Legend of Korra too! She's also Water Tribe!" I'll let you come to your own conclusions on that.

Malina, from North and South, also gets her name from a woman of Inuit myth, who became the sun after running away from her brother (for gross and fucked up reasons) who, in turn, became the moon. Her brother Malik has a name that could mean a number of things depending on what Inupiaq word you think he's supposed to be named after, from tidal wave to lure to one birth shortly after another (the traditional lifestyle typically involved gaps of about five years between children so only one year between births was notable) to constantly following (which, knowing the Inuit myth about Malina and her brother, is a little unfortunate).

Even in the original series, you find some glimpses of the language in names. Arnook is likely from "nanuq" or polar bear, which was spelled nanook before the spirit movement in the 80s estabished a standardized written aspect of the language. Kuruk's name likely comes from "kurruk" which means to hang one's head in sorrow, shame, or disappointment, but you could interpret it as coming from longer words meaning things like to lower one's head as if to look for something or to fall head over heels.

Hi!! I do read a lot! Mostly nonfiction, romance, and a little bit of fantasy and contemporary/literary fiction. I’m currently reading The Hellion’s Waltz, the third in Olivia Waite’s Feminine Pursuits series (all three are ff historical romances set in England - Hellion’s Waltz isn’t out yet but I have an advanced copy). I would absolutely recommend the first, The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics if that sounds interesting.  In general, here are some of my favorite books: Nonfiction:  - Sweetness and Power by Sydney Mintz: A history of sugar, colonialism, and power dynamics in its production and consumption. Is rather academic but it is readable and slim. - Who Cooked the Last Supper?: This book is always recommended among radfems with great reason - women need to learn that the male way of thinking is wrong in so many ways, and that women have been making vital contributions to humanity that have been misattributed (purposefully and incidentally because of patriarchy) to men.  - Milk by Kurlansky: This is the history of milk. It includes a wrong fact about the history of cheese (Kurlansky misattributes it to a man as part of Myth of Man the Hunter - see Who Cooked the Last Supper? to learn more about misattributions. Cheese was absolutely developed by women who were at home caring for children). But otherwise it’s a great and very readable history of one of humanity’s most important foods.  - In The Shadow of Slavery: All about how enslaved Africans brought their foods and food traditions to the Americas and how food was a key part of resistance. Great information about things like rice cultivation in South Carolina and food as resistance in Brazil.  - Invisible Women by Criado-Perez. Excellent book on the ways in which failing to sex disaggregate data (aka not separating out data on women vs men instead of lumping it all together) fails women, from car design to snow clearing plans. Great as an audiobook.  - Fran Lebowitz Reader: This audiobook is amazing.  - In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson. He brings his humor to Australia and you’ll want to purchase plane tickets immediately. (Can’t wait for Australia and NZ to open to vaccinated travelers!) I also love Thunderbolt Kid, At Home, and The Body by him.  - The Emperor of All Maladies: This is a history of cancer and its treatment. This is a tome, but is absolutely fascinating.  Romance:  - A Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics: Really a lovely novel about female empowerment (like the real kind: standing up for oneself in the face of male efforts to hinder women, women becoming the best patrons and confidants for each other, etc) - Ravishing the Heiress: This is a straight romance, and one not the best intro to the genre for lesbians who don’t read any straight romance. But for fans of the genre (or even just romantic subplots in books and fanfiction) this is a masterclass example of a marriage of convenience and slow burn romance.  - Devil in Winter and Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas. For those who loved Bridgerton, these are amazing. DinW is one of the most beloved historical romances of all time, and Marrying Winterborne is from her newest series and that book is becoming beloved as well. 

Fantasy: - When Women Were Warriors: This is a story told in three parts (it’s not three books, you have to read all three parts to complete the story) set in pseudo-medieval England about a matriarchal, matrilineal society where lesbianism is common. Great for fans of fantasy who don’t need magic, creatures, or space travel, etc.   - All the books written by Tamora Pierce. Her books are mostly YA/Middle Grade but they have excellent pacing, plots, and character development. My favorites are the Alanna books and the Immortals series. These are great if you’re someone who likes shorter books where for attention purposes or just for a fast read. I reread these all the time - Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs: TW sexual assault at the 1/3 point in the series (and for basically every book in the sister Alpha and Omega series). This is Urban Fantasy for all the fans of werewolves, vampires, fae, fairy tales, wendigos, and all the other scary legendary creatures. Features a great female lead, a straight romantic subplot, inter-species alliances and wars, fighting for good, and is set in the Pacific Northwest. There’s a billion of these books (read in order) so you’ll have plenty to keep you reading if you like the first.  - Daughter of the Forest: TW graphic sexual assault. This is a famous retelling of The Six Swans story. Straight romantic subplot. This book is constantly recommended as one of the best retelling stories and I agree. I would recommend reading rather than listening to an audiobook of this one because there’s no reason to read the assault scene - just get to it and skip a few pages and resume. I fully believe that if this book was written now it wouldn’t have the descriptions, but it is important to the plot.  Contemporary/Literary Fiction:  - Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters: TW for abusive relationship and prostitution. This story of the underground of London at the turn of the century is a lesbian classic for a reason. Happy ending! Great exploration of the time.  - Bastard Out of Carolina: TW graphic sexual assault of a child. This book is a really hard read about the ways in which women pick men over their own daughters, religion oppresses women, poverty is worse for women than men, women are expected to be quiet and just suffer their burdens. I read this for the first time in a Women’s Writing course in college and it made me bawl my eyes out. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read.  - The Well of Loneliness: I love sad books and this is no exception. Sad lesbian at the turn of the century. Historically important book.  - Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver: This ecofiction book is not the usually recommended book by her. This takes inspiration from Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and interweaves three stories of women, life and death, and the health of the environment.  I use goodreads and Kirkus reviews to find books all the time. If any one of these sounds interesting, put it into goodreads and you’ll be able to find other books by the author, books similar to it, and lists that contain the book (for instance, if you look up prodigal summer it’s probably on an ecofiction list and you can find a ton of ecofiction books that way!). Kirkus is amazing for finding new and upcoming books. The online reviews are free (I think - my mom is a paid subscriber to the magazine). For nonfiction I also look through Washington Independent Review of Books.  Another underrated way to find books is Facebook and Reddit! If there’s a genre you really like, then find a facebook group for it. This is a great way to find what others love, new releases, and you can save posts (underutilized thing fb does) and have something to scroll through the next time you are looking for a book. Reddit has a bunch of subreddits for different genres. Many of the large genre groups run books clubs (fantasy runs a bunch of structured book clubs, romance runs buddy reads, etc.).  Hopefully this gives you some place to start!

BELLEVUE / EASTSIDE

Bellevue is a city in Washington state, across Lake Washington from Seattle. Downtown Park has a large lawn, gardens and a waterfall. Nearby, the Bellevue Arts Museum features craft and design exhibitions, plus a sculpture garden. The Bellevue Botanical Garden highlights Pacific Northwest plants, and includes woodlands and wetlands. KidsQuest Children’s Museum has interactive science, tech and art exhibitions.

Thanks to Bellevue’s diverse population, international cuisine abounds. For Taiwanese specialties like soup dumplings, Din Tai Fung (700 Bellevue Way NE, Ste 280) is worth the wait, while the related jian buns from Dough Zone (15920 NE Eighth St, Ste 3) are delectable. Inside modern Monsoon (10245 Main St), where Vietnam meets the Pacific Northwest, the Drunken Chicken strikes just the right balance of crunch and flavor. Whether you just want to do a little window shopping or you have your heart set on something specific, Bellevue has the store for you. The Bellevue Collection* (575 Bellevue Square) is an excellent place to start, with about 200 retailers—think everything from Amazon Books and The Container Store to Apple, Microsoft, Anthropologie, and Nordstrom. At The Shops at The Bravern (11111 NE Eighth St), find all the designer labels your closet could crave, including Gucci, Prada, and Jimmy Choo. Outside the malls, Main Street (known as Old Bellevue) houses a variety of cute shops. Whisk (10385 Main St) carries all the kitchen supplies your chef heart could desire. Trip to Chinatown

Entering the third week of class excursions, I was able to tour one of Chicago’s most historic and ethnic neighborhoods, Chinatown.  The location of the city’s Chinatown was not always located on the south side.  Originally Chinese immigrants arrived in Chicago only after the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, with the influence of harsh ethnic violence found on the west coast of the United States (Kiang, 1992).  Enclaves were initially formed in Chicago’s Loop, with a quarter of the Chinese population residing there; slowly the newly migrated Chinese found acceptance from their new neighbors and Chinese business sprouted throughout the city (Kiang, 1992).  Although the Chinese were experiencing success in the booming industry center of Chicago, renewal of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1892 amplified discrimination to the Chinese communities.  Due to the increasing and frightening racism, the Chinese communities fled south of the loop near Armour Square.  This push to the south side was aided by the oppressive taxes applied to Chinese land and business owners; even Chinese homeowners felt the economic impact of the governance targeted against them (Ling, 1956)

What is now considered, ‘New Chinatown’ is the southern haven Chinese immigrants were able to build and grow.  The neighborhood is relatively small and walkable, being bounded to the northwest by the southern branch of the Chicago river.  Running from its northernmost point on 18th Street, south to the Stevenson Expressway along 26th Street.  It stretches from its easternmost claim running along the redline of the ‘L’ rail lines to the west being bordered by the Dan Ryan Expressway.  The neighborhood, although minute in size, is rich in activities for visitors to enjoy.  On my trip to Chinatown I was able to visit the New Chinatown Library, explore Ping Tom Memorial Park, walk through the Chinatown Square and mall, tour the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago, and enjoy the numerous artistic and architectural landmarks scattered throughout the neighborhood.

Although this new Chinatown has been standing decades, the inevitable development and gentrifying nature of cities endanger the culturally authentic neighborhood.  Pressured by McCormick Place from the east, new hotels and entertainment functions raise the living standards of the area (Ecker, 2019).  Rising rents in the adjacent neighborhood to the west of Pilsen also intensify increasing wealth gaps.  Most salient to the neighborhood is the newly acquired sixty-two acre plot of riverfront land located just north of Chinatown.  This land was purchased for seven billion dollars, with intentions for a development project to emplace ten-thousand new residential units (Ecker, 2019).  What is most concerning for this existing population is the lack of wealth accumulated in the neighborhood.  A majority of the household incomes in Chinatown earn less than fifty-thousand dollars a year.  With increasing interest in Chinatown from outside investment as a potential new key sector connecting the periphery neighborhoods to the central business district and loop; existing residents must recognize and prepare for the looming increase in economic activity to come.  

One exemplary model of the neighborhood’s ability to combat against external development is the construction of the New Chinatown Library.  Designed by the same architects who created the One World Trade Center in New York City, and the Centennial Tower in San Francisco, the library is renowned for its beauty and design, as well as, the sustainable architecture embedded in its arrangement (Clark, 2016).  The building was designed with community input in mind, utilizing the principles of the Chinese design style of feng shui (Clark, 2016).  Upon first entrance of the building, I was astounded by the design and function of the library.  Incredibly different from the library I am accustomed to at home or even found on my campus, the building allows bountiful amounts of sunlight to enter.  The books are organized as in a traditional library, but many of the books found on the shelves of this library were published in Chinese languages.  When walking up to the second floor, you are overwhelmed by the view of the city’s skyline.  The library displays a large ornate mural, filled with traditional Chinese designs, and gorgeous coloring detail.  Also displayed in the library are pictures illustrating significant Chinese accomplishments in the city of Chicago.  One note about the library was I imagined the building to be quite larger inside, because grandness of the building from the outside, but the internal space was  underwhelming.

After my exploration of the library, I ventured north in the neighborhood to explore Ping Tom Memorial Park.  Along my walk to the Ping Tom Park I encountered the Chinatown Square and Mall.  In the square Chinese zodiac figures are littered, displaying birth years and traits of persons belonging to a certain zodiac.  After a brief search of my birth year, I was able to find my Chinese zodiac sign, the dragon.  The dragon as depicted in the description, is the most mythical of the zodiac signs, with dragon people being characterized as confident and enthusiastic individuals.  They are perceived to have reputations of loud mouths, but in actuality are soft-hearted and intelligent.   It is noted that dragon individuals excel at right brain activities such as artistry and writing.  Also located in the square is a large stage for performances to be held for the community (Kennedy, 2002).  On the opposite side of the stage along Archer Street one can locate the large Immigration Mosaic.  The mosaic depicts illustrations of Chinese immigration, with ships representing the trip across the Pacific Ocean for many immigrants, as well as, images of trains to symbolize the honorable work of the Chinese immigrants who constructed the transcontinental railroad.

The mall was something quite unique and a foreign concept to my understanding of stripmalls.  In the Chinatown Mall a two story system is utilized with catwalks along the second floor, for customer access to business.  Numerous businesses and economic functions practice out of the mall; dining, leisure, and exercise sites are just a few of the businesses one can find.  The mall is a refreshing break from the city.  It incorporates plenty of greenery through the use of trees and flowers along the business fronts.  The Chinatown Square and Mall provide much needed promotion of cultural retention in the neighborhood, while simultaneously stimulating the local neighborhood economy.

Finally, after the brief detour through the square, I headed on my way towards Ping Tom Memorial Park.  Originally the site was utilized as a Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad yard, and was not acquired by the Chicago Park district until late in the twentieth century (Chicago Park District, 2020).  During the period of time prior to attainment of the land Chinatown was plagued by a complete lack of open green space and recreational functions for the community.  The ultimate tragedy that stemmed from this lack of park space was two entire generations of children and families in Chinatown had zero access to a neighborhood facility (Chicago Park District, 2020).

Beginning in 1998, the Chicago Park District transformed the once harsh, industrial landscape to the inviting, green space that stands today.  The park incorporates a playground for small children, as well as community gathering areas.  Tom Ping park also offers immaculate views of the city’s skyline, and has cemented many walking trails for visitors to enjoy.  The park emphasizes the cultural value of the Chinese community and integrates Chinese design elements throughout the park.  Even a few intricate artistic murals can be spotted in the park as well.

The name of the park remembers and honors the man who pressured and advocated for the need of the recreational commons, Ping Tom; who passed away shortly before the opening of the site.   Tom who spent his life living in Chinatown was the formulator of the Chinese American Development Corporation, this private firm created the previously regarded Chinatown Square (Chicago Park District, 2020).  On top of his development works, Ping Tom was an active civic and cultural leader to the neighborhood; he engaged and fostered relationships, even acting as an advisor to U.S. senators, Illinois governors, and mayors of the city.

In full honesty the entrance to the park was anything like I had ever seen before.  Prior to entering the park you are encountered with railroad tracks that one must cross prior to entrance.  It is important to be aware of your surroundings during this crossing, as the train line remains active for trade and commerce.  Upon entrance of the park all patrons will be greeted by the large pagado-style pavilion found near the park’s river edge, along with the imposing bronze bust of Ping Tom.  Walking north along the river located underneath the highway two large murals are painted along the supporting beams.  The murals depict traditional Chinese artworks illustrating natural landscapes and ornate flowers.  In person the murals are massive and quite detailed, they provide a refreshing renovation to the blighted highway that cuts through the park.  Continuing just north of the murals a uninterrupted view of the city’s skyline can be seen.

The Ping Tom park was truly a hidden gem and a pleasant escape from the industrial and urban environment Chicago creates.  Although the entrance is a bit peculiar, any person attending the park will undoubtedly experience the beauty in the park.  To note as well, was how surprisingly quiet the park was.  Despite being surrounded by industrial infrastructure, the highway and rail line had a negligible impact on the park, but I must admit, on my first attempt at exiting the park I was prohibited from doing so due to a train.  

To end my trip around the neighborhood I headed towards the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago to learn more about the origins of the neighborhood.  Along my way I was able to see the Chinatown Gate, which symbolizes the entrance to Chinatown.  The gate was constructed in 1975, designed to reflect similar characteristics to gates found in Beijing.  The Chinese characters displayed atop the gate translate to mean, “the world belongs to the commonwealth” (Male, 2020).  Chinatown Gate was implemented in order to promote increased unity and intensified cultural exchange in the neighborhood.  The gate is quite spectacular and provides a grand entrance to Chinatown, a worthy entrance to a community full of rich culture and trade.

Passing the gate, I arrived at the museum.  The Chinese-American Museum mission preaches for the appreciation of Chinese-American culture by means of education and through exhibitions.  The museum aims to preserve the history of the culture, as well as, the future (Chinese American Museum of Chicago, 2020).  The museum was compiled on two floors.  On the first floor, pictures, decorations, clothing, jewelry, and many other traditional Chinese artifacts were presented.  What stood out to me most significantly were the wooden carvings hung along the walls.  Traditionally known as the folk craft of Guangdong, carving styles illustrate flowery, layered scenes depicting generally historical events and legend.  The Guangdong carvings located in the museum were massive, and it was apparent the laboring efforts required to create such a work of art.

On the second floor of the museum, a theatre can be located; in which a brief informational video is presented showcasing staple Chinese cultures and customs, along with discussing the historical founding of the neighborhood.  The video was illuminating and educational, presenting the history of Chinatown quite well.  Found on the second floor as well are depictions of successful Chinese-owned businesses.  Early in their settlement to Chicago, the Chinese population discovered laundry services and facilities required little capital to start and the skills required were easy to learn.  Because of these two factors within a span of fifty years the number of Chinese operated laundromats from two, in 1872, to nearly five-hundred, by 1926 (Chinese American Museum of Chicago, 2020).  Displayed in the museum’s laundry are a manual cash register, a business license from 1959, as well as, typical laundry accessories, such as irons, sprayers, a darning machine, and spindles of twine.

Beginning my trip I was unsure of what impression Chinatown would leave me with, after my first thorough visit.  Initially I imagined Chinatown to be noisy and busy, with highways circling the neighborhood, and the red line ‘L’ track running on its boundary; but this was not my lasting memory of the neighborhood.  As I explored more I was able to recognize the escape that Chinatown provides from Chicago.  The New Chinatown Library provides excellent educational resources to the community, while also promoting the use of sustainable infrastructure in further development of the neighborhood.  Chinatown Square and Mall stimulates the local economy for the neighborhood, simultaneously providing a gathering place for its residents.  The implementation of Ping Tom Memorial Park was a much dire need for the community, providing green space and recreation.  The Ping Tom park in my opinion provides the greatest experience of any park I have visited in Chicago.  Chinatown is a deeply cultural neighborhood and this is extremely important and apparent as one walks through the neighborhood.  As the pressures of gentrification and city development continue to trouble the existing community, it is crucial steps be taken to preserve the neighborhood.  Although this is much to ask and prevent, small actions, like supporting a small business or leaving a donation at the Chinese-American Museum, can go to support the community and uphold the culture built in Chinatown.

We love drinking pilsner, so we thought it was about time to start making our own series of pilsner beers that reflect our love of citrusy hops. Our new ‘Project Pilsner’ series is a line of single hop American Pilsners featuring: Citra, Galaxy, Mosaic, Lotus, Crystal. We will brew these delicious hop forward pilsners year-round, except for a brief visit to the celebration of Oktoberfest.  The first beer Project Pilsner Citra will be out this Saturday, February 1st.

Our series of American Pilsners reinterprets the classic style for the Pacific Northwest. This first version is single hopped with Citra, resulting in a bright, citrusy lager with notes of mandarin and mango.

We have special glassware to celebrate the release. These limited edition 16oz glasses feature the Project Pilsner Citra artwork and cost $6 each. We only brought in a handful, so grab one while you can.

All of the beers in the Pilsner Project series have custom label art by Bene Rohlmann. Bene was born in Münster, Germany and is currently living and working in Berlin. In 2007 he started his formal training in Design, with a major in Illustration at FH Münster and graduated with his diploma in 2012. His artwork combines various traditional techniques such as collage and drawing, and incorporate a random assortment of themes which interest him, such as mexican death cults, traditional art from native tribes, lots of nature related themes like moths and plants, classic Disney movies and old advertisements.

Glow Cloud’s dreamy label art is by Mexican artists Siamés Escalante. Siamés is a Yucatan born graphic designer and artist currently living in Mexico City. Her work is inspired by Japanese culture and children's books imagery. Her pieces always include themes such as innocence, melancholy and fantasy. While not drawing or painting, Siamés likes to watch Korean dramas in the company of her two sidekicks (aka her cats) Ramen and Brooklyn.

Rough-sawn cedar clads Whidbey Dogtrot house in Washington by SHED

Cedar siding and a central breezeway feature in this compact home in the Pacific Northwest designed by US firm SHED for a couple who will soon retire.

The project, called Whidbey Dogtrot, is named after its location on Whidbey Island, which lies just north of Seattle. The single-storey dwelling is perched on a bluff overlooking the Puget Sound.

The project was designed by Seattle's SHED Architecture and Design for a couple who are transitioning into retirement. They desired a compact, low-maintenance home that embraces its picturesque setting.

"In addition, the home needed space for guests, visits from adult children, hobbies, music and a home office," the team said.

The home was informed by traditional dogtrot-style houses

For inspiration, the architects looked to the dogtrot-style house, which features a central breezeway covered by a roof.

They conceived a low-lying home made up of two rectangular volumes flanking an open-ended passage, where the front door and a wooden bench are located. The building is topped with a black, standing-seam metal roof.

Exterior walls are clad in rough-cut, western red cedar with a semi-transparent black stain.

To ensure privacy, the team limited the amount of apertures on the front elevation, which faces west. The home opens up on the east, where large stretches of glass offer sweeping views of the landscape.

One side of the house contains the primary living quarters, which total 915 square feet (85 square metres). This area encompasses an open space for cooking, dining and lounging, along with a bedroom suite and reading nook.

Throughout the dwelling, the team incorporated neutral colours and contemporary decor. Interior finishes include pale wooden cabinetry, creamy white walls and concrete flooring. Heat is provided by a hydronic system.

Other projects by SHED include a sustainable Seattle home that was influenced by circus tents and Japanese design, and the conversion of a horse stable into a studio and guesthouse.

It’s come to my attention that perhaps the beloved ballet The Nutcracker was not meant to be a traumatic childhood rite of passage; until recently I had assumed you always left the ballet enchanted but also slightly terrified. That’s just how it was.

But it turns out that Maurice Sendak designed the set that I saw for several years running at a formative age, so it turns out that if you didn’t attend the Pacific Northwest Ballet between 1983 and 2014, this was not a normal part of your experience:

Those teeth split apart, by the way, and came crashing down at intermission. Like a nutcracker. Get it? Also like the nightmares of small children.

Honestly the Sendak/Stowell production is the only stage production of The Nutcracker I’ve ever seen, so I have no idea what parts of the set/choreography are traditional and what are part of a sideways imagination. For example:

This is from one one of the scene painters and it’s hard to tell in a still frame, but the Rat King comes out from the side of the stage as the Christmas Tree grows and grows in the background until it eclipses the whole stage. (See the dancers at the bottom for scale.) Oh, and did you notice Herr Drosselmeyer at the top? He’s watching the whole scene, the wings of his greatcoat bracketing the stage. Terrifying.

Working through my first year (two-plus seasons ~ fall, winter, and spring) in the Pacific Northwest, I am literally *awed* by Nature: its beauty, intelligence, power and grace. It is humbling to see how *little* this great Gift is appreciated or used intelligently in our society. Indeed, we still act as though Nature is either a conquest to be pursued, or when it knocks us on our asses, a malevolent adversary.

How ironic since we can’t live a life of any real quality without it.

As such, it is appalling how *alien* our social/cultural and technological beliefs, habits and practices have become, when measured against Nature’s Design and Standard Instruction Set.

One example is how we’ve grown accustomed to administering (or receiving) ~ especially to children ~ chemical injections to “fight” future diseases that we don’t have now, as though the human immune system is incapable of responding to *any* real threat.

No one told us that throughout primary education (but is included in my book, I Am My Body, NOT!) Apparently, no one tells this simple fact to future doctors during all their years of training in medical school.

Since we don’t think of the body having self-repair abilities built-in, then we’re not inclined to see government-led obsession with vaccination policies and practices as a convenient way to intentionally break down the population’s natural defense systems (and their cognitive abilities), as part of some broader plan of what might be termed, “population duncity” and control.

The net effect is a dumber and more “manageable” population, whose social norms are presumed to reflect their general, and actual level of evolution and intelligence.

But this is a false reading.

How can there be true evolution when devolving social norms have been “programmed” in and are running with our help and defense?

A devolving social norm is any standardized activity that, in an of itself, lowers the quality of life, often under the guise of improving it. In addition to the practice of vaccine use and policy already described, our society today there are many examples:

War (killing and destruction to get one’s way) or the threat thereof

Circumcision ~ easily forgotten and dismissed later in life, but this act creates a major trauma that affects the child’s metabolic and psychological development

Application and use of toxic agents to “fight” (meaning kill) microorganisms in humans and animals that are thought to be causes of “disease”.

Application and use of toxic agents to “fight” (kill) microorganisms in soils to make it more convenient to grow single crops.

Application and use of toxic agents into the water supply and atmosphere.

Extraction of fluid substances from the earth to run our internal combustion engines when other methods are available that are more efficient, produce far more power, with far less adverse effects to the environment.

A Mind Game

The Mind: More than we have been led to think.

Yes, the social drivers of society are running a self-destruct program targeted at the mind of every human being, where it can’t be seen, but from whence all beliefs and behaviors are formed.

HOWEVER, since the program itself is unnatural it will degrade on its own if not reinforced regularly. This applies to genetically modified organisms (GMO) as well as psychological operations (PSYOPS). Human Nature would immediately restore itself if we turn off the nefarious suggestions of institutionalized cultural “programming”.

The Natural Human Being is nothing like the crazed animal that is suggested in some “civilized” circles.

By the way, the human mind is not the brain. There is one Mind, from which all that we see, perceive, and imagine, springs. The brain, and every component that makes up the human body, is a product of the Mind. All that exists, both manifested and unmanifested, comes from the Mind. You journey within the Mind whether you have a physical body, or not.

The Mind is “physical” and not physical. ALL that is “physical” come into existence from the Mind as a product, effect, and result of your desire and Will, and through the auspices of vibrational resonance and affinity.

In the non-physical regions of The Mind are the patterns and matrices that make physical organization and change possible. It is due to the existence of these perfect and unalterable templates that a consistently recognizable “you” is possible. The stability of these templates is also why and how the microscopic lifeforms that live within the body are able to repair and renew body parts through the process known as healing.

The practice of administering antibiotics, another of those self-destructive cultural norms, decimates entire populations of lifeforms that would normally and naturally protect, repair or rebuild areas within the body that had been injured, or become dysfunctional.

We allow these lifeforms populations to be decimated by doctors’ prescriptions without a second thought, and oblivious to the effect that such medications have on overall balance within the ecosystem.

Yet, if left alone, balance would restore itself. This is why opinion managers need humanity’s attention in order to continue the distraction, diversion, and deception through empty promises, fear, misinformation, and outright lies.

The degrees and levels of cognitive and metabolic dysfunction that humanity presently experiences and exhibits is the result of the imposition, perpetuation, and intensification of unnatural, unsustainable, destructive behaviors for the apparent gain of a minuscule segment of the population (“rulers” and “leaders”) at the great expense to the vast majority.

A Microbial Holocaust

Indeed, the process of introducing such substances into the human ecosystem actually kills off large numbers of proto-lifeforms and microorganisms that would normally respond IF the need arrived.

The ability to heal is implicit with the ability to disable. The relationship between the two activities ~ thought to be linear in nature ~ has been elusive, mainly because the perpetrators (latter-day elites who run major corporations, governments, military, medical institutions and their agents) are getting what they want; a sense of control over, and ownership of the planet and all that dwell thereon.

Furthermore, the “prey” have been convinced that it is better not to question. In other words, “Conquered”.

We, who either promote or defend such practices or allow them to continue, don’t help ourselves by simply following precedent and bowing (or bending over) to these Draconian “traditions”, especially in light of the astounding rise in crises, chronic disorders, and conflicts that, in spite of claims to the contrary, can be linked to certain practices.

This stuff eventually reaches consumers’ stomachs.

The substances used today (not just vaccines) are far different (and more damaging) than they were even a few decades ago. While there is great denial of any link to damage to health, the environment, or human cognitive abilities and consciousness, there is little appreciation for the real price, beyond “money” and “health”, that is extracted and paid from ALL.

Passive Parties to Insanity

It’s amazing how we continue to allow ourselves and our children to be exposed to these substances in so many ways. This is the effect of trusting (or not questioning) the perpetrators, and the not knowing to what extent they affect us.

There may be another factor: cellular memory of gruesome measures taken against large populations by people intent on “playing God”.

Based on the stories written in the bible, for which a dear price was very likely paid many generations ago by those who didn’t believe, adherents today are thoroughly immersed in the idea that He had powers then that they don’t possess today.

Wisdom and Knowledge? Yes. Powers, No.

One thing about “worshiping” another being, the worshiper excuses and absolves himself from taking an active role in knowing the truth (that we are expressions of Source), and when the truth is known, then making it part of your day-to-day experience.

This includes the simple advice to treat others the way you would be treated, “loving your neighbor as yourself”.

No one can “love” another if they are of a mind that they need a “savior”. They can’t even accept, respect, or love who they are. Yet true love, freedom, truth and knowledge begins there… within

Some will rationalize the acts inferred above as being of the “Dark Ages”, but its easy to see that the same type of thinking is liberally sprinkled throughout certain sectors of society to this very day.

Our fixation on the visible, perceivable world renders us blind to the ideas (of Mind) that drive them. The incessant debate for and against gun control in response to the growing phenomena of cultural self-destruction with guns, totally ignores the ecological, metabolic, and psychological damage that is still being by our unchallenged use of chemicals. Few voices are being raised (though some are) to end vaccination and circumcision practices.

More people are preferring foods that have not been injected with hormones and genetically modified. Even more are preferring produce grown on lands, and using methods that restore balance to soil and water.

We’ve got a lot of turning around to do, as the greatest damage was psychological and spiritual, which is both the hardest and easiest to change.

A New Day: Loving Nature

If we imagine that the practices associated with that period for which millions of people horribly, wrongly, and needlessly suffered were passed on as recollections from generation to generation, it would be easy to see how, or why so many people today are content to believe in God, or a doctrine rather than seek to know and exercise their own, true, creative, equal, divine nature.

Then they’ll act surprised, unduly inconvenienced, and unfairly targeted when diseases surface after we have indulged, or permitted one egregious crime against Nature after another for years and even generations.

For those who may wonder what a crime against Nature is, please consider for a moment that ALL of humanity (you and me included) is part of Nature. (Even Trump, Hillary, et al.)

As expressions of Life (and sometimes sentient), we are already part of the Natural Order; not apart from it. No other “Order”, neither “New” nor “Old” World, is Natural.

The Natural Order will always trump the unnatural schemes and practices dreamed up by wannabe “emperors”.

For these and other reasons, we have institutionalized many unnatural practices with respect to our environment, both inside the body, and out.

The alarming rise in long-term, chronic diseases can also be stated as the decline in natural immune function. This should be, and would be obvious to anyone not trained to set aside common sense, ignore reason, or suppress the truth in order to continue receiving a paycheck, or to not question an opinion simply because the practitioner has “credentials” (and we’re not worthy if we don’t) or might get offended.

Do you see the mental “game” they’re playing?

The social experiment on the human race has gone so far that Pavlov would be green with envy.

We who make wars possible by cooperation with puerile tyrants and despots, who make famine possible by making a world industry that grows and delivers “foods” that provide little nourishment; we have grown accustomed to sitting around, waiting for our Savior, and listening to others’ promises to make our lives better, to the point that we don’t actively do it ourselves.

How ironic that we’ve grown so mentally, emotionally, and socially afraid and dependent, then boast our courage and independence? How tragic that we’re so ready to “protect” ourselves from each other that “killing” is the way… as long as its an *approved* “enemy?”

I write these thoughts because, consciously or not, intentionally or not, this is our doing. Whether we knew it, agreed, or not, our BS meters were damaged or turned off when we entered this realm.

I say this because I KNOW that in spite of claims of intelligence ~ evidence of which is seen everywhere in the Natural Order ~ humanity acts pretty damn DUMB in matters that count, and appears to be doing much too little to right its own ship. We’d rather wait and see if the politician or oligarch du jour has promised to do it, or people in some government agency have *blocked* promising new approaches.

They need our compliance in order to do these things. Non-compliance does not have to mean violence or anarchy.

It might mean, however, that we’re growing up to become the one’s we’ve been wishing for.

We Always have a Choice

That said, we ~ the collective human population “we”~ are still the Power that makes it all possible; not only the crap that I have described, but amazing new directions that make you *want* to get up each morning to enjoy… not just the final realization, but *the journey* too.

You don’t have to believe me. You must know yourself, which only you can choose to do. I can only suggest to you that the choice, and the journey, when you decide to take it, will be well worth it.

Doing what they do is as much part of the Natural Order as our actions are. Living in Peoria Illinois

Peoria is an Illinois town, which was incorporated as a city in 1860. The history of Peoria, Illinois began when land that would later become Peoria was first settled in 1680 when French explorer Ren é-Robert Caveliers, Sieur de La Salle, arrived at the site to establish a fort. In the early years, this city was known for its trade with the surrounding area and to people of the gold rush era. In the late 1800s, manufacturing and weaving began to make up part of the economy, along with railroads and iron manufacturing. Today, this old town is known as the cultural hub of Illinois. The early history includes being a major fur trade center.

Peoria is named for the Peoria Indians whose traditional residence was at the mouth of the Illinois River. The earliest European settlement in the state of Illinois was in Peoria and it became the first European town south of the river. The most important early European visitor to Illinois was Marquette de Pompadour, a French explorer who came to be known as the Father of the Lakes. Peoria is also where John Cook and his third voyage of the voyage of discovery to the Pacific coast, called the Oregon expedition, ended. Also on record is the fact that Abraham Lincoln came to Peoria to speak with the Peoria Indians.

Although Peoria is just east of the Illinois River, it is the largest city in southern Illinois. It is bordered by the southern most portions of the counties of Sangamon, Des Plaines and Du Page. There are two major rivers that drain into the area, the river of the Illinois and the Mississippi. All these bodies of water offer plenty of opportunities for recreation and business.

There are many attractions in the Peoria area. Of course, it has always been home to the first major general hospital in the state of Illinois. This institution is known as Charity Hospital and is located in downtown Peoria. Built in 1830, this masterpiece of Gothic architecture still stands today. The hospital is also known for its premier heart surgery center in the country.

Also, within walking distance of downtown Peoria is the Bradley University campus, which is home to some twenty campuses. Many people commute to downtown Peoria from northern Illinois to complete their college and career programs. Some of the degree granting schools at the university include Bradley University, College of Saint Mary, College of Wisconsin and De La Salle Bourbon College. All of these programs have had a long standing history in the field of higher learning in the state of Illinois and are part of the rich tradition of colleges and universities in the state of Illinois.

Just a short drive away from downtown Peoria is the beautiful Barberry Knoll Lake, which provides a unique overlook on the northwest corner of downtown Peoria. This is an ideal place for families with small children to enjoy quiet time on the lake. The Illinois River offers another resource for enjoyment near downtown Peoria and the famous barberry hills. The Illinois river boasts many enjoyable activities including boat tours and kayaking. This activity is especially popular in late May through early September, when the Barberry hills are at their peak.

If you enjoy the riverfront living but would prefer to have more space, then you may want to consider relocating to the famous southern end of Peoria. This part of town is known for its high-ended homes and affluence. The southern end of the town's riverfront is lined with some of the most exclusive shopping malls in the entire state of Illinois. The Town Center, which includes a movie theater and a giant bank, is also a very popular stop for visitors. In addition to this shopping and sporting venues, the Illinois riverfront offers many fine restaurants, pubs and other dining options.

In Peoria, Illinois there is a diverse combination of residential neighborhoods that range from the affordable townships along the river to upscale communities in the heart of downtown Peoria. One of the most popular areas in the area is the Town Center, which is home to the Barberry Hills Country Club. This upscale community is designed around the "green living" concept, which means a focus on energy efficiency and minimizing man made pollutants. This neighborhood is home to Barberry Country Club, a members only club that offers access to over twenty miles of the beautiful Illinois river. Other Riverfront communities in Peoria include Riverfront Park, which are known for housing some of the most elegant homes in the area; North City, which are becoming a sought after urban neighborhood with an emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability; and finally, Peoria heights, which is becoming a fast-rising area for families to live.

Heyday Travel Company is here to help you choose the best Walt Disney World resort for you.  Beyond just the numbers (location, tier, amenities onsite, etc.), we’ll also give you our personal opinions for any places we’ve stayed at.  While we’ve made our way around to many of the locations, we haven’t gotten to all of them, yet! Fortunately, where we may not have stayed, we likely know someone that has and can always get a firsthand opinion for you.  Heyday Travel also provides an ongoing update for construction at the resorts and restaurants.  We stay up to date on these so that we may help you plan your best Walt Disney World vacations. Since our reviews are not aggregated (like ‘leading’ websites on the web), you’ll be able to find some consistency with what we say.  This, of course, can be double-edged. While this absolutely weeds out any uninformed opinions, it also means you’re receiving only our point of view.  This, of course, means we may disagree with your personal experience and opinions at times too. Have no fear though, just because we may not like a location for our personal tastes and preferences doesn’t mean we can’t or won’t identify it as lining up with yours!  We’ve met plenty of people that disagree with our likes and have even vacationed with a few. Agree or disagree, you can trust that any opinions expressed here are from someone that has firsthand experience.   For this initial article, we’ll give you a broad highlight of each area, it’s resorts and overall general information.  In other blogs, you’ll be able to find more detailed information and reviews for each. DISNEY RESORT CLASSIFICATIONS

Disney loves to categorize things, so it’s no surprise that they’ve developed a hierarchy for their resorts. Deluxe Resorts: These resorts have the most extensive theming throughout, will have themed pools with slides and quiet pools, offer a food court, table service restaurants (with signature dining also available at most), a lounge bar, and a pool bar.  These resorts tend to be closest to the parks with several transportation options. If you’re looking for options and amenities, these will be your best choice resort.Deluxe Villa Resorts: These rooms are part of the Disney Vacation Club (Disney’s version of a timeshare).  Although these rooms are part of DVC, some rooms are available for general cash bookings. These rooms offer suites with more space.  Some of these suites even offer full kitchens, in-room laundry, and multiple bedrooms/bathrooms. Many are attached to Deluxe resorts offering access to those amenities.  Those that are not attached still offer the same deluxe and upscale amenities.Moderate Resorts: These resorts have moderate theming, although they do offer heavily themed rooms (Port Orleans Riverside and Caribbean Beach offer Royal and Pirate themed rooms respectively).  The grounds tend to be gorgeously landscaped even if they aren’t very “Disney” themed per se. The pools are not as themed as Deluxe resorts and may offer a slide although not as large as those found at Deluxe pools and also offer quiet pools.  Moderate resorts offer a food court, a table service restaurant, a lounge bar, and a pool bar.Value Resorts: These family-friendly resorts have some of the most “Disney-esque” grounds and theming of all of the resorts.  You’ll see colorful buildings with giant (read multi-story) Disney icons, sports equipment, etc. flanking the buildings. These resorts will have 1 large themed pool and several other smaller pools available.  There are no slides at these pools but may have “spray areas” and/or children’s pools. Value resorts have quick service food courts and in-room pizza delivery available, as well as a bar area near the pool. DELUXE & DELUXE VILLA RESORTS

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – (Deluxe & Deluxe Villa Resort) – Step into the heart of Africa at this magnificent Resort hotel. Inspired by the traditional African kraal, the horseshoe-curved design provides spectacular views of 4 lush savannas that over 200 hoofed animals and birds call home. Disney’s Beach Club Resort (Deluxe Resort & Deluxe Villa Resort) – Discover the casual elegance of this charming, New England-style Resort hotel. HOW TO CHOOSE A DISNEY RESORT

So now that you’ve decided you want to stay on-property, how do you choose which resort?  There are nearly innumerable considerations, but let us give you some factors to consider: Cost: Of course, right?  Your budget will absolutely play a part and something you’ll want/need to consider.Location: With your budget in mind, think about how you want this trip to go.  Will you be focusing on just one or two parks? Will you be going to multiple? Hopping between multiple each day?  These things may impact where you want to be.  Room Quality: Yes, you’ll be able to save some money staying at a Value resort.  However, if you expect to spend a considerable amount of time in the room you may not enjoy it as much as if you were at a Moderate or a Deluxe.Size of your group: With greater numbers come more considerations.  Especially if you expect your group will break-up during the day.  Some may stay back for the pool while others go park hopping. Would you like to split up rooms or try to all be in the same suite?Theme: All Disney resorts will have a theme or some theming.  There is a significant difference though between the theming at Wilderness Lodge, Caribbean Beach, and Art of Animation.Dining: The resorts with the greatest quality and selection are those in the Epcot area.  Not only do you have significant in-resort options but also relatively easy access to the World Showcase and Epcot and Disney Springs.Amenities and Recreation: This is something else to genuinely consider if you intend to spend significant time at the resort.  Some resorts offer unique recreation opportunities and more elaborate pools. Most of these are still available to you even if at another resort, they’ll just be less convenient.Nightlife: The Epcot and Disney Springs resort areas offer the most nightlife options for you.  The extensive happenings at the Boardwalk and the numerous bars and restaurants at Disney Springs.
