Exclusive Interview: Trace Lysette on starring in Monica "it's a weird duality to have this moment in my career at the same time as all the anti-trans legislation & propaganda"
Andrea Pallaoro’s Monica was one of the most talked about films at last year’s Venice Film Festival, where it was nominated for both the Golden Lion and Queer Lion, and went on to win the Arca CinemaGiovani Award and receive an eleven and half minute standing ovation at its world premiere. Captured in almost every frame of the stunningly shot movie (by cinematographer Katelin Arizmendi), is a…

i just saw an interview of Hunter Schafer and I actually thought she was really cute in euphoria and ballad of songbirds and snakes, but oh my god trans women look so different when they aren’t being filmed from the most flattering angles possible designed to make them look like a woman
like her shoulders were so wide and her jaw line was actually way bigger than i thought it was and tbh it’s been the same with every trans woman that I thought was even remotely cute or at least that I thought passed well in their YouTube videos or other professionally filmed and photographed and edited media
Same with Nikkietutorials, Blaire White, Stef Sanjati, Contrapoints/Natalie Wynn, Trace Lysette, I thought all of them passed really well on their own personally controlled social media and then i see pictures of them irl that they didn’t get to edit or take and I’m like i- this is just a man like these people do not pass at all, like passing is such a fucking illusion that is achieved only through social media and very meticulously editing and posing your videos and photos

In a new interview with the L.A. Times, Soloway said that Maura will die off-screen, with the two-hour sendoff focused on the Pfefferman family’s grieving process. “We were all in mourning in many ways, and we all had to process together,” Soloway explained. “The show has always been a reflection of who we were, and we were mourning our own narrative.”
Transparent was previously renewed for a fifth and final season, which was pushed back following the firing of Tambor, who was accused of sexual misconduct by co-star Trace Lysette. It was eventually decided that the series would forgo a final season and instead conclude with a movie-length musical, which has now been dubbed The Transparent Musicale Finale. Returning series regulars Judith Light, Amy Landecker, Jay Duplass and Gaby Hoffmann will be joined by returning guest stars Kathryn Hahn, Cherry Jones, Melora Hardin, Tig Notaro, Rob Huebel, Alexandra Billings and Lysette

Transgender Struggles in Acting
As a transgender person and an ally to the LGBTQ+, I have been very pleased to see as much trans representation in shows as I have.  There are only a few movies that I can name that have impacted me in this way, as shows are usually more contemporary and popular culture leaning.  To name a few shows that I have seen that involve trans characters played by trans actors:  The Fosters, Orange is the New Black, Shameless, Degrassi, Euphoria, Feel Good, Good Trouble and American Horror Story.  All of these have accurately represented trans people in either the plot aspect or just the fact that a trans actor is playing a trans character.  However, this does not mean that these actors have been appreciated by the entire public in the way I and other LGBTQ+ allies appreciate them and their roles.
Laverne Cox, an actress on the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black, is seen as one of the most impactful people to have played a role of a transgender character.  This show was a very successful, popular show that aired from 2013-2019 and told the fictional stories of women in prison.  Cox’ role in this show was critical.  Not only because her character was one of the main characters, but also because she was representing trans women on screen.  This representation focused less on the transgender aspect of it all and more on the individual character’s story.  This was revolutionary in that it represented a trans character as something more than just trans, but a person with a story who just happens to be trans.  Another notable representation can be seen in Trace Lysette’s role in the series Transparent, a dive into the hardships of being transgender in today’s society and how one typically hides it.  This role was also revolutionary in that it was a trans character played by a trans person, contradictory to the main character of the show (a trans woman played by a cis man).
Tumblr media
(pictured above: Laverne Cox)
Neither of these roles, and none of the roles that were played by trans people went unnoticed.  They impacted me and millions of others, and there is ratings, comments, acknowledgements and more to prove so.  However, this impact only aided each actor who played the impactful role for the time that they were in the role.  What I mean by this is that although a trans actor may get a role that is forever impactful to society, the role may not impact them themselves forever.  Most trans actors during this time are employed for only short periods of time, earning them immense amounts of money but only for a limited time.  For example, Laverne Cox is one of the most impactful transgender actors of this century. She was on all 7 seasons of the show representing a trans woman, but was only appreciated for her time on that show. She has not been able to receive many roles after this show due to her being transgender and the stigma around it.  In an interview, Cox stated that she would love to one day help her mother with bills and buy herself a house some day. Hearing this from most any other celebrity would not make sense, for acting in a Netflix series opens many doors of opportunity.  Cox did not get this pleasure, however.  Many agencies have asked Cox inappropriate questions related to her being trans (i.e. “what surgeries have you had done?”) before even attempting to witness her acting skills.
Both Lysette and Cox opened many new doors for trans actors and celebrities.  However, the fact that they were so well known was what became their downfall.  Because their roles were so highly praised, and because they were praised in the trans community so much, agents and directors avoided employing these women unless it was for a role of a transgender woman.  This put limitations on the trans community.
Elliot Fletcher, known for his roles in the series The Fosters and Shameless, was able to open doors for trans people as well as he was employed by many shows as a trans man.  Even before Fletcher became well known, he was making sacrifices to represent the trans community.  He was challenging the scripts he was given in which trans men were misrepresented, and explained to agents how he felt.
youtube
It is very important to pay attention to how we discuss trans people and their journey.  As said in the Youtube video, “Every Sex & Gender Term Explained,” “someone who is in transition is someone who is converting from living and working as one gender to a different gender.”  It is important to note the use of the words regarding gender identity, and Fletcher (and this Youtube video) helped promote the correct use.
Although not specifically mentioned in the article in question, there was a difference between Cox and Lysette in their ability to succeed.  Although they are both trans women who struggled and are still struggling to find roles, Cox is a black trans woman who is struggling to find roles. This takes her chances to succeed in the acting world and diminishes them even further.  We cannot ignore the fact that there are still so many opportunities setting white people and black people apart, because “if, based only on direct observation of skin color, you knew there were white and black people, but you didn’t know about ‘race’ in modern society, you would be ignorant of one of the most important determinates of the experience of those white and black people”(Zweig).
Cox speaks of her amazing success within the industry, but also speaks of the aftermath of her fame.  Because all agencies were aware of her past and because she already had less of a chance succeeding than a white woman, she was not given many opportunities, and still is not.
Both of these women, Cox and Lysette, have brought awareness to the trans community and brought change to individuals, but we are not repaying them in the ways in which we should.  We have to see people for more than their past and instead for who they are and what they can do for our world now.

Everything That Upset the Internet This Week
What is the web-o-sphere angry about this week? A Hollywood casting choice, a celebrity tweet and a photograph of a dead giraffe. Here’s everything you need to know.
Scarlett Johansson has been cast in a transgender role
THE STORY: On Monday, Deadline broke the news that Scarlett Johansson has been cast as the lead in Rub & Tug, a film based on the real story of transgender massage parlour owner Dante “Tex” Gill.
THE REACTION:
Actors who are trans never even get to audition FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN ROLES OF TRANS CHARACTERS. THATS THE REAL ISSUE. WE CANT EVEN GET IN THE ROOM. Cast actors WHO ARE TRANS as NON TRANS CHARACTERS. I DARE YOU #RupertSanders @NewRegency #ScarlettJohansson https://t.co/RkrW8MeGcG
— Jamie Clayton (@MsJamieClayton) July 4, 2018
And not only do you play us and steal our narrative and our opportunity but you pat yourselves on the back with trophies and accolades for mimicking what we have lived… so twisted. I’m so done…
— Trace Lysette (@tracelysette) July 4, 2018
A lot of cis people REALLY aren’t getting why Scarlett Johansson shouldn’t play a trans man but it’s really simple. Hire trans actors to play trans roles. If production demands a big bankable name then at least hire an actor of the right gender. Tex Gill should be played by a man
— Erika Heidewald (@erikaheidewald) July 5, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: This isn’t the first time a cisgender actor has taken on transgender role in a Hollywood film—and Johansson was the first person to make this point. “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment,” Johansson told Bustle via a press representative, referencing three actors who have gone on to win prestigious awards for their portrayal of trans characters.
Johannsson, however, clearly didn’t do her research: each of these actors have, in some way, expressed regret about taking on trans roles. Even Jill Soloway, who cast Tambor as a trans woman in her Emmy-award winning show Transparent, has said “it is absolutely unacceptable to cast a cis man in the role of a trans woman. Ever.” In the 2016 interview with TV Insider, she went on to say, “If anybody has been reading the Internet they understand how awful it is for trans women to see cis men portraying them. It’s an insult.”
And I’m going to go ahead and say, based on the reactions to Johansson’s casting news, the opposite is equally as insulting. It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time Johansson has taken on a highly controversial role. In 2016, she became one of the most prominent examples of Hollywood whitewashing after being cast as a Japanese character in The Ghost Shell, a popular manga series. Rupert Sanders, who directed The Ghost Shell, is also the director behind Rug & Tug. Let’s not forget to include his name in this backlash.
Amber Heard tweets an ICE warning
THE STORY: Early Tuesday morning, Heard posted about an ICE checkpoint near her L.A. home, writing, “Just heard there’s an ICE checkpoint in Hollywood, a few blocks from where I live. Everyone better give their housekeepers, nannies and landscapers a ride home tonight…” The tweet has since been deleted.
THE REACTION:
Since #AmberHeard deleted her racist tweet.. I will repost my tweet and the screenshot.
Amber Heard – just your typical, out-of-touch, virtual-signaling, elitist prototype.
When you try to be the "wokest" of the "woke" but then tweet this… pic.twitter.com/xjj4GdrqaB
— 🎀👄Dash👄🎀 (@dash4442) July 3, 2018
Amber heard is racist and I will now boycott any movie or tv show that she’s involved with.
— Shane Underwood (@shanetrain44) July 3, 2018
@realamberheard so you believe immigrants are here to serve you and your A-listers?…Hollywood is broken #truth #walkaway pic.twitter.com/T3cZMarIIm
— Rob🇺🇸🇮🇱 (@BigOhRob) July 4, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Heard may have intended for her tweet to be satirical—meaning, she meant to drag Hollywood’s elite for their life of excess. This explanation, however, doesn’t excuse Heard from the racist undertones of the message. Her “joke” heavily plays into the stereotype that domestic hired workers— be it housekeepers, nannies or landscapers—are living in America as illegal immigrants. By reducing these roles to a stereotype, she’s implying that immigrants aren’t able to hold other jobs in society.
A Kentucky woman posts a “trophy kill” pic
THE STORY: Tess Thompson Talley, a 37-year-old, shared “trophy kill” photos online of a black giraffe she shot while on a hunting trip in South Africa last summer. “Prayers for my once in a lifetime dream hunt came true today! Spotted this rare black giraffe bull and stalked him for quite awhile,” Talley wrote in a Facebook post which has since been deleted.
THE REACTION:
THIS IS SO SICKENING. Tess Thompson Talley I hope you get eaten by a pride of lions.
— Chrishell Hartley (@Chrishell7) June 20, 2018
TF is she pointing up to? Some old white boy god imagined hovering in the South African sky whispering: “Tess Thompson Talley, these poor people long for you to fly over to them and slaughter an aged giraffe on their behalf, my disciple. Self-obsessed lunatic colonizer. #TFOOH pic.twitter.com/Fgo5APxzGL
— Jeffrey Wright (@jfreewright) July 4, 2018
To be you Tess Thompson Talley must be like living without a soul .. your savagery & lack of intellect will go down in history
Shame on you & anyone else with this revolting appetite for death – you are the minority & laws will come in to prosecute you https://t.co/hy3I3UTuoS
— CLAIRE COOPER (@CLAIREECOOPER) June 28, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Following the mass outcry, Talley has responded to multiple media outlets with comment. “This is called conservation through game management,” she said in a statement to the TODAY show. She also cites that the criticism she’s faced is sexist.
“For all the people wishing death or even threatening death to me, this does nothing positive for your ‘movement,’ it only shows the world how lopsided your priorities are,” she said. “The very same picture could have been posted, and are posted daily, of men with their trophies and not a word is said.”
Uhhhm, okay. Remember that dentist that killed Cecil the lion? Yeah, well he isn’t even a practicing dentist anymore.
In related news, this week three alleged rhino poachers were eaten by lions on a South African game reserve. The circle of life!

Earlier this week, Deadline broke the news that actress Scarlett Johansson would once again be working with director Rupert Sanders on Rub & Tug, a film based on the real story of transgender massage parlor owner Dante “Tex” Gill. The announcement has drawn significant backlash, particularly given the fact that Sanders and Johansson’s last effort was 2017’s Ghost in the Shell, which became one of the most prominent recent examples of white-washing in casting Johansson as a canonically Japanese character.
Ghost in the Shell’s script bent over backward to justify portraying Johansson’s character as a white woman, a gambit that ultimately suggested that the filmmakers knew that there was a problem, but didn’t consider it important enough to address properly. That suggestion is only further heightened with Rub & Tug, which positions a famous cisgender woman as a representative of the trans male experience, rather than seeking out an actual trans actor for the role. It’s a problem emphasized by trade announcements on the movie, including Deadline’s, which misgenders Gill by using female pronouns instead of Gill’s preferred male pronouns, and uses his dead name (the name Gill was assigned at birth).
Though conversations about opportunity and representation for marginalized communities in Hollywood are being had more often and more openly in recent years, the very fact of that underrepresentation has allowed filmmakers continue to justify their choices by either fundamentally altering narratives, as with Ghost in the Shell, or citing historical precedent for similar casting practices. The reaction to Johansson’s casting, and her response to it, represents in miniature the problems with that line of thinking.
Following the Rub & Tug announcement, online reaction was swift and vocal. Trans actors and creators, including Indya Moore (FX’s Pose) and Jamie Clayton (Netflix’s Sense8), have spoken out against the casting decision.
Wen cis women play trans men you are reducing the existential experience of a trans man as playing dress up. cis people cannot tell trans stories- don’t have the range. If they did, they would empathize with the reality of how problematic, dismissive and fetishizing this is.
— IAM (@IndyaMoore) July 4, 2018
The backlash has been made worse by Johansson’s response, issued to Bustle by an unidentified rep: “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.”
Tambor, Leto, and Huffman are all cisgender actors who have played transgender roles; Tambor in the Amazon original series Transparent, Leto in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club, and Huffman in 2005’s Transamerica. In other words, Johansson’s answer is more of an excuse: “If everyone else is doing it, I can do it, too.”
This would be flawed thinking even without the added knowledge that each example she’s cited is a performance that was critically acclaimed, suggesting that the idea of playing a transgender character as awards bait factored into the casting decision. (Tambor won a Golden Globe and two Emmys for his performance as Maura Pfefferman; Leto won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a SAG Award; and Huffman won a Golden Globe.)
Leto has defended his casting as a transgender woman, but Huffman has spoken in support of transgender actors playing transgender parts. “I certainly understand the sentiment that a trans actor should play a trans role,” she said, in a 2014 interview with HuffPost Live. “And I support it. What can I say — I think transgendered [sic] people have been marginalized for a long time and I think you see that in people who are not trans playing them.”
Tambor, too, spoke about the marginalization of transgender actors in his 2016 Emmy acceptance speech. “Please give transgender talent a chance. Give them auditions. Give them their stories. Do that. And also one more thing: I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male to play a female transgender [sic] on television.”
That said, Tambor is probably not an example that Johansson really wants to be following, given the allegations of sexual harassment that led to him being fired from Transparent. He was accused of sexual misconduct by his former assistant, Van Barnes, as well as transgender actress Trace Lysette, who reacted to the news of Johansson’s casting on Twitter, pointing out that transgender actors are not offered cis parts.
Oh word?? So you can continue to play us but we can’t play y’all? Hollywood is so fucked… I wouldn’t be as upset if I was getting in the same rooms as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett for cis roles, but we know that’s not the case. A mess. https://t.co/s8gBlBI1Sw
— Trace Lysette (@tracelysette) July 4, 2018
On top of that, Transparent creator Jill Soloway has also spoken about having cast Tambor, saying that, “I could come up with a lot of cis-cuses—cis excuses—about why my choice shouldn’t be questioned. But I actually feel the opposite. I feel like our choice should absolutely be interrogated. […] Nobody should be that ignorant right now to cast a cis man in this role. If anybody has been reading the Internet they understand how awful it is for trans women to see cis men portraying them. It’s an insult.”
The same could be said for transgender men now seeing a cis woman portraying Gill. Gill’s story is fascinating — his massage parlors were a front for brothels, and, like Al Capone, he was eventually stung for tax evasion rather than his gangland activities — and deserves to be told properly. That includes casting a transgender actor in the part.

Jessica Walter Discusses Jeffrey Tambor's Alleged Harassment While Male Co-Stars Brush It Off

Jessica Walter Discusses Jeffrey Tambor's Alleged Harassment While Male Co-Stars Brush It Off
The co-stars of “Arrested Development” sat down together for an often-emotional interview with The New York Times as Jeffrey Tambor, who plays the family patriarch on the show, faces harassment allegations.
Tambor was fired in February from “Transparent,” in which he had also starred, after his co-star Trace Lysette and his former personal assistant, Van Barnes accused him of sexual harassment. The actor denies the allegations but admitted to being “volatile and ill-tempered” in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He added that his temper reached the “Arrested Development” set too, prompting a “blowup” with Jessica Walter, who plays his wife on the show.
During the Times interview, published Wednesday, Walter said that Tambor had indeed verbally harassed and yelled at her. “In like almost 60 years of working, I’ve never had anybody yell at me like that on a set,” she said.
Walter’s comment came in response to a remark from co-star Jason Bateman, who plays Michael Bluth on the show and who seemed particularly eager to defend Tambor. Bateman had said that all actors have their “processes.”
“Not to belittle it or excuse it or anything, but in the entertainment industry, it is incredibly common to have people who are, in quotes, ‘difficult,’” Bateman said, later adding, “It’s a very amorphous process … you know, making up fake life. It’s a weird thing, and it is a breeding ground for atypical behavior, and certain people have certain processes.”
At that point, Alia Shawkat, who plays Maeby Fünke on the show and who was the only other female star present for the Times interview, interjected: “But that doesn’t mean it’s acceptable.”
The show’s other male stars, as well as its creator, Mitchell Hurwitz, have expressed viewpoints similar to Bateman’s.
“Jeffrey has never evinced that kind of behavior,” Hurwitz told Entertainment Weekly, referring to the allegations from the “Transparent” set. “Am I going to cut Jeffrey out of the show, based on allegations that he disputes … and that we have never experienced any complaints about? No, of course I am not going to.”
Tony Hale and David Cross ― also actors on the show ― defended Tambor in the Times interview.
“He learned from the experience and he’s listening and learning and growing. That’s important to remember,” Cross said.
Hale noted, “We’ve all had moments.”
Walter did tell the Times she was ready to forgive Tambor and would work with him again “in a heartbeat.”
“Let me just say one thing that I just realized in this conversation,” Walter said, through tears. “I have to let go of being angry at him.”
She added, turning to Tambor: “I have to let it go. And I have to give you a chance to, you know, for us to be friends again.”

Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor denies sexual harassment claims but admits to being ‘difficult’
SACKED Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor has broken his silence over sexual harassment claims which led to his firing from the hit TV show, Transparent.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Tambor strongly denied accusations of inappropriate touching and sexual propositions towards his former assistant Van Barnes and Transparent actress Trace Lysette. Both women identify as transgender.

David Cross Says He And A Number Of The Arrested Development Cast Stand Behind Jeffrey Tambor Amid Sexual Harassment Claims!
The Bluths have George Sr.'s back! Well, some of them do.
A week after Jeffrey Tambor was officially fired from Transparent over multiple accusations of sexual harassment, members of his Arrested Development family are voicing support for him.
Related: Harvey Weinstein Apologizes To Jennifer Lawrence & Meryl Streep!
In an interview with AM New York this week, David Cross said that he and some other cast members of the cult comedy still believe in Tambor, revealing:
"I can't speak for everybody, but I know there are a number of us who stand behind him — from the limited amount we know, we stand behind Jeffrey — and I am one of them."
As we reported, the 73-year-old actor was livid about being fired from the groundbreaking Amazon series after the streamer launched an investigation into sexual harassment claims made against the actor by guest star Trace Lysette and a former assistant.
Tambor said he was "profoundly disappointed" by the way Amazon and series creator Jill Soloway handled investigating the "false accusations."
Cross seemed to agree in his Monday interview, continuing:
"I think it's very curious that Amazon didn't make public the results of their internal investigation. I'm not sure why they would do that. I just know the whole thing is rather curious to me."
Aside from Cross, the only other member of the all-star Arrested Development cast -- which includes Michael Cera, Jessica Walter, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, Portia de Rossi, and Alia Shawkat -- to speak out on the drama has been series star Jason Bateman, who tactfully told The Hollywood Reporter this week:
"I love Jeffrey. I always will. I can't go further than that, but I will always love that man."
Netflix has yet to reveal whether the controversy will affect the upcoming fifth season. No official release date has been announced, but Cross confirmed shooting has wrapped and expects a springtime release.
As for whether the accusation will impact Tambor's role, Cross said:
"I certainly hope not. I doubt it, but I don't know. I'm not in those offices or making those decisions."
We doubt Netflix will All The Money In The World Tambor out of season 5, but stranger things have happened in this climate.

Jeffrey Tambor's Transparent Announcement and More Shocking TV Exits
New Post has been published on http://gossip.network/jeffrey-tambors-transparent-announcement-and-more-shocking-tv-exits/
Jeffrey Tambor's Transparent Announcement and More Shocking TV Exits
Transparent without the trans parent? Looks like it might happen. Jeffrey Tambor, who has come under fire with allegations of sexual harassment on set of the Amazon series, announced he does not see a way he can remain on the series.
“Playing Maura Pfefferman on Transparent has been one of the greatest privileges and creative experiences of my life. What has become clear over the past weeks, however, is that this is no longer the job I signed up for four years ago,” Tambor said in a statement on Sunday, Nov. 19. “I’ve already made clear my deep regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being aggressive, but the idea that I would deliberately harass anyone is simply and utterly untrue. Given the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set, I don’t see how I can return to Transparent.”
Amazon had no comment, and no announcement about whether or not season five will go on as planned as been made. Trace Lysette accused Tambor of acting inappropriate on set.
“Jeffrey has made many sexual advances and comments at me, but one time it got physical,” Lysette alleged in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “My back was against the wall in a corner as Jeffrey approached me. He came in close, put his bare feet on top of mine so I could not move, leaned his body against me, and began quick, discreet thrusts back and forth against my body. I felt his penis on my hip through his thin pajamas and I pushed him off of me. Again, I laughed it off and rolled my eyes. I had a job to do and I had to do it with Jeffrey, the lead of our show.”
A former assistant also leveled claims against the actor, which he denied.
If this is indeed the end of Tambor on Transparent, it’s just the latest shocking exit in TV history. Take a look back at some other surprising exits from hit shows now.
CBS
Grace Park, Hawaii Five-0
Grace Park, who shot to fame on Battlestar Galactica, left Hawaii Five-0 ahead of its eighth season. Reports indicate she and costar Daniel Dae Kim were trying to renegotiate a higher salary to match their costars.
CBS
Daniel Dae Kim, Hawaii Five-0
Daniel Dae Kim and his costar Grace Park left the CBS drama in between seasons seven and eight. In a Facebook post, Kim said the choice to leave was difficult, and that he made himself available to come back, “CBS and I weren’t able to agree to terms on a new contract.”
NBC
Sophia Bush, Chicago PD
Season four of the NBC drama ended with Sophia Bush’s character entertaining a job offer in New York with the FBI and it sounds like she’s taking it and leaving the show. The show is called Chicago PD after all…
HBO
T.J. Miller, Silicon Valley
After four seasons on the HBO comedy, T.J. Miller is departing, calling it an “organic ending.” “Also, in a weird way, it’s interesting to me to leave a show at its height. It’s interesting to me to see how the show will grow and change with the exit of this character,” he told EW.
CBS
Erinn Hayes, Kevin Can Wait
After just one season on the CBS comedy, there’s a shakeup afoot. Erinn Hayes, who played wife to Kevin James, will leave as part of a creative shakeup. However, from the sounds of her tweet, it wasn’t a mutual decision. “True, I’ve been let go from the show. Very sad, I had a great experience season 1,” Hayes said on Twitter. “Thank you for all the support from our wonderful fans.”
ABC
Jennifer Morrison, Once Upon a Time
Emma Swan is leaving Storybrooke. Jennifer Morrison announced she will leave the Once Upon a Time should it return for a seventh season. She will appear in one episode of season seven should ABC renew it.
ABC
Connie Britton, Nashville
Y’all heard the rumors about a Connie Britton‘s potential exit from the series once it was revived by CMT, but Britton herself downplayed them…for a time. Britton’s character Rayna died from injuries sustained in a car accident. She took to Instagram to pay tribute to the character and the show after the episode aired. “It has been an honor to be a part of that creation. And as I know she would want it, the show must, and will go on. Long live Rayna Jaymes,” she wrote.
ABC
Stana Katic, Castle
Castle without Beckett? You better believe it. After eight seasons of solving crimes and falling in love, Stana Katic was let go from the long-running series by ABC (along with her co-star Tamala Jones) prior to a potential season nine renewal, leaving Nathan Fillion‘s Castle to handle things on his own, should the series return. Following the surprising announcement, Katic released a statement to E! News, saying, “Rather than distract from what was an amazing experience I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show. Thank you to the fans.”
Tina Rowden/FOX
Nicole Beharie, Sleepy Hollow
Yes, it’s for real: Sleepy Hollow star Nicole Beharie confirmed following the show’s season three finale that her character, Abbie Mills, was really dead. As in not supernaturally coming back somehow should the show be renewed for a fourth season.
CBS
Michael Weatherly, NCIS
After 13 years with the show, Michael Weatherly, who was with the series from the start, announced he would be leaving NCIS. “He is a valued part of the CBS family, and the immense charm and talent he brings to the screen as ‘Very’ Special Agent Tony DiNozzo has helped make NCIS what it is today—the No. 1 drama in the world,” CBS said in a statement. “We thank Michael for all of his contributions to this successful franchise and look forward to continuing to develop projects with him as part of our ongoing development deal.”
The CW
Nina Dobrev, The Vampire Diaries
TVD‘s fandom was left speechless when its leading lady revealed she would be exiting the show after six seasons…and  that the show was still going on without her. Delena and Stelena fans alike were devastated. “I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime,” Nina Dobrev wrote in an open letter. “I myself made some of the best friends I’ll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.” BRB, sobbing!

Kal Penn, House
What to do when you’re on one of TV’s hottest shows, but get a job at the White House? If you’re Kal Penn on House, your character commits suicide and you go work for President Obama!
NBC
Christopher Meloni, Law & Order: SVU
Law & Order: SVU was about Benson and Stabler for 12 years…until Meloni left the series after tense contract negotiations. Everyone assumed things would work out and the two would continue to bust perps, but life doesn’t always work out and Benson was left Stabler-less. However, the show was reinvigorated and is now in season 17.
CBS
Cote de Pablo, NCIS
Ziva left the building on her own accord. Cote de Pablo has spoken out about leaving the hit CBS series after close to 200 episodes, saying it was a personal decision. “As far as my decision to leave, that’s a personal thing, and I’d rather leave it at that,” she said. “The idea of leaving was not something I toyed around with for a long time. It was an overwhelmingly hard thing—at times terrifying.” Her exit shocked fans, especially those who shipped her character’s relationship with Michael Weatherly‘s character.
HBO
Christopher Abbott, Girls
Marnie (Allison Williams) and Charlie (Christopher Abbott) were finally happy together…but then Abbott left the show between seasons, citing he was unable to relate to the world Lena Dunham crafted.

Kellie Martin, ER
Whenever anybody left ER, the question came up: Why would you leave TV’s hottest show? Well, Kellie Martin, whose character Lucy Knight was a bright up and coming med student, gave several reasons for her exit, including having a personal tragedy mar her time on the series. Lucy was brutally stabbed by a patient, her death forever haunting viewers.

David Caruso, NYPD Blue
Another “Did he really just leave one of TV’s biggest shows?” moments—David Caruso left NYPD Blue after one season due to contract issues. He wanted more money. He didn’t get more money.
ABC
Michael Vartan, Alias
The official reason behind Michael Vartan‘s late exit from the spy drama remains a mystery, but rumors have swirled it was due to his break-up with co-star Jennifer Garner. (He did return for the ultimate series ending, after it was revealed his character faked his own death.) Fans were NOT happy.
Macall B. Polay / HBO
Michael Pitt, Boardwalk Empire
The HBO hit series shocked fans when Jimmy Darmody was offed in the season two finale. While there were rumors about Michael Pitt‘s on-set behavior causing issues, producers maintained that the death was a creative decision.
WB
Shannen Doherty, Charmed and Beverly Hills, 90210
TV’s quintessential bad girl, Shannen Doherty left 90210 after four seasons amidst rumors of bad behavior. She reprised the character of Brenda Walsh for the first time in 2008 on The CW’s 90210. Doherty exited her next big show, Charmed, after three seasons with—surprise—even more rumors of behind-the-scenes drama and feuds. 90210‘s Brenda went to acting school and Charmed‘s Prue was killed off.
Vivian Zink/ABC
Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight, Grey’s Anatomy
Katherine Heigl‘s exit was less than shocking, due to her headline-making comments over not getting enough material to warrant nominations and complaints over lying in a hospital bed for long hours due to her film schedule. T.R. Knight‘s exit was a bit more shocking, highlighting his lack of storyline and character growth in an interview with EW. Shonda Rhimes, of course, has no time for actors not wanting to be an attraction at Shondaland, so Izzy and George both scrubbed out of the ABC hit drama.
PBS
Dan Stevens, Downton Abbey
After so many ups and downs, Dan Stevens‘ Matthew Crawley finally landed the girl and had the baby…and then died. Stevens’ Downton exit riled viewers—where was the happy ending?!—and even pissed off his costar Michelle Dockery, but ultimately it did wonders for the show and Dockery’s Lady Mary.
CBS
Josh Charles, The Good Wife
Josh Charles‘ exit from The Good Wife is hands down one of TV’s best kept secrets. Yes, his death was shocking, but the fact that producers were able to keep it a secret is what really stands out. Star Julianna Margulies convinced Charles to stay with the show for 15 episodes of season five to craft a fitting exit. The powers that be explained they needed to kill him so his character wasn’t out there, always a possibility for Alicia.
MTV
Crystal Reed, Teen Wolf
After three seasons, Crystal Reed went to producers and asked to be written off the show in order to pursue other opportunities. Choosing not to give fans a heads up, the viewers were stunned when Allison died in her first love Scott’s arms in the penultimate episode of season three. “It’s an interesting thing when the actor says, ‘Hey, I want to try something new,'” boss Jeff Davis told us of actors leaving the show (Colton Haynes, Daniel Sharman and Tyler Hoechlin have all exited). “You to have to decide whether you’re going to say, ‘Can we convince you to stay?’ And as a producer, I don’t want anyone to work on the show who feels like they want to move on.”
The CW
Colton Haynes, Arrow
Unbeknownst to fans, Colton Haynes, fresh off his exit from Teen Wolf, only signed a two-year deal to play Roy, an unusual move for the studio. Arrow then shocked fans by faking his character’s death at first, only to reveal it was a cruel joke. Still, it left the door open for him to return (which he has, and will again).
ABC/Kelsey McNeal
Patrick Dempsey, Grey’s Anatomy
Mer lost her Der in an unthinkable twist. Patrick Dempsey was killed off, leaving Ellen Pompeo‘s character to move on without McDreamy. Series creator Shonda Rhimes cited a similar reason to The Good Wife for killing off the character. “The decision to have the character die the way that he did was not a difficult one in the sense of what were the options?” Rhimes said at the 2015 Summer TCA press tour. “Either Derek was going to walk out on Meredith, and leave her high and dry, and what was that going to mean? That was going to suggest that the love was not true, the thing we had said for 11 years was a lie and McDreamy wasn’t McDreamy. For me, that was untenable.”
FOX
Mischa Barton, The OC
The OC without Marissa Cooper?! The thought alone was blasphemous at the time of the Fox show’s heyday…but then it happened. Rumors about whether or not it was MischaBarton‘s decision to leave swirled for years, but Josh Schwartz has come out and said it was a mutual decision made to shake up the series.
