I don’t think I’d ever seriously try to speedrun a game but I think I would to do a tool-assisted superplay one day. Real time speedrunning is an unimaginably time-consuming hobby and it can’t take hours and hours of practice to do even individual glitches consistently, let alone in tandem over the course of a run, and I just don’t feel that that’s feasible for me, even if I’m just playing for my own personal best. Now make no mistake about it, TASes are not easy and quick. They can require hundreds of thousands of replays, and it takes months or years for them to be created. But the difference is that instead of the emphasis being on your skills, timing, etc., the emphasis is on your knowledge of the game on a programming level. There are things in TASes that are just not possible for an ordinary human to do on authentic hardware. You get a detailed look at the guts of a game, watching rng change every frame, writing code by exploiting buffer overflows, understand the mechanics in such intimate detail… it’s like a puzzle, almost. And the other thing is, the goal isn’t just to beat the game as fast as possble, but to be entertaining. The mods will reject your submissions if they’re no fun to watch, regardless of how many frames they save. And that’s how you get amazing feats like the brain age 2 TAS, or the Ocarina of Time one that used arbitrary code execution to recreate many urban legends from the game’s release, like collecting the triforce and beating the running man. TASes are so underrated and the creators are insanely talented and knowledgeable so it irks me that people shit on it with “it’s just a computer, that doesn’t take any skill.”

I’m considering doing a TAS(Tool Assisted Superplay) of Pokemon Emerald.

The reason I’m classifying it as a Superplay instead of a speedrun is so I can Grind and Take time to assemble my team.
