Last month, I also watched the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 100th Anniversary short film Once Upon A Studio, and I loved it.
It’s not the story I liked most; it was nice and cute, but nothing revolutionary or unexpected. What I loved was seeing and hearing all these familiar characters, especially the 2D-animated ones, again. I’m a fan of hand-drawn animation and really miss it, so I was happy to experience it once more, even if it was only for a few minutes.
I love traditional animation because it’s always felt more magical and “personal” to me. I missed seeing a character on screen and thinking, “I know who drew you”. Here, when Louis (The Princess and The Frog) appeared, I recognized his original supervising animator Eric Goldberg’s work. I also knew that impressive shot of Peter Pan and the Darling siblings flying around the building could only have been animated by James Baxter (his brain works in 3D; I don’t know how he does that but it’s always mind-blowing). And as a fan of Mulan, seeing her not only being animated by Mark Henn, whose style I think is unmistakable and who was her supervising animator in the 1998 movie, but also holding hands and singing with Snow White (the first Disney protagonist) and Asha (the latest Disney protagonist) was quite special and moving.
What’s also great is that you can tell they tried to remain as faithful as possible to each movie’s original visual style, which means characters, for the most part, really look like they’ve just come out of their respective films. Graphically speaking, the numerous protagonists all have their own identity (it clearly was the artists’ goal, and I think they achieved it), but the whole thing still looks surprisingly coherent. The vast majority of the original voice actors are back, which is a very nice touch as well.
I don’t know, I just think the care, skills, and passion of the people who worked on Once Upon A Studio were palpable, and that felt good. Their attention to detail is evident, and as someone who grew up watching hand-drawn animated movies and truly loves the artistry behind them, I appreciate that.

Over the moon very messy review (spoilers)
I wasn’t really planning on watching it today but it was so praised on my pot early on that i just had too
And..... I’m confused...
It has some VERY good scenes, plot points, characters, songs, sceneries and some VERY bad scenes, plot points, characters, songs, lyrics and sceneries
I wanted to start by being positive but this whole thing got mixed up
So here’s my thoughts:
- loved chang’e (i gotta google this cause i thought it was chungha like.... chungha the idol). Love her design, love her voice, love her attitude. Best character, never boring. Tall as fuck goddess. She’s right there with eris from sinbad. Muah kisses the chef. Her hair, makeup, outfits, facial expressions. Idk if the voice actress is the same for speaking and singing but the singer from Hamilton is so so good, she made me not mind the godawful lyrics. I wanted more screen time for her cause she honestly saved the movie
- the protagonist girl fei fei is a bit of a positive and negative of the movie. She’s cute but very cliche. There’s 273648 characters like her. Her problems are very real and relatable but u cant just help sigh and think of her as a dramatic teenager u know? I do feel bad and see my teenage self in her cause i do understand but.... shes super dramatic still. I mean.... she went to the fucking moon to avoid her father getting married shes crazy. She went to all that trouble to learn how to make a rocket just to avoid him remarrying... i understand the frustration one might feel, it never happened to me but if it did id probably have very mixed and selfish feelings about it too, but her and the father really should have just talked. A simple conversation would have let her know that he’s lonely but never ever would forget the mother. And the father had time, he just didnt do it so the fault is not all on her. But i guess there would be no movie if they talked, would there?
- the motivations in this movie dont make sense or are just weak.... fei fei wants to build a rocket to the moon to avoid her father from remarrying? Dumb. She wants a pic as proof? Dumb. The brother wants the pic to help the sister? Ok... but he’s literally an 8 year old, they dont give a shit about none of that specially one that just met u. Chang’e wants the gift which is understandable but... why the potion?? Literally just to give the bunnies a love plot thats dumb af. Also, did she really took both immortal pills or whatever it was? It was implied multiple times that she was selfish but idk if she cleared that out
-i loved the Chinese town. Super cozy and friendly. Love how the river is so integral to it like in real life i assume. It’s just so different from the ocident i love it. Please more movies featured in Asia cause they have many gorgeous cultures. I love the sense of community and family, the little details and the food aspect of it. I love how Asian countries combine modern with old so much so that atsome point i didnt really know what year the movie was supposed to be set in.
- the “pre meeting step mother” part of the movie was the best along with chang’e’s scenes. I almost cried even tho the moment the mother fell i knew she was gonna die. I’m getting very emotional with these scenes as i get older even tho both my parents are still alive but i guess those scenes just make me think about when the worse will happen and i dont wanna think of it of course. But the mother was so great and kind. I really felt their bond and love between mother and daughter. And father but u know.
- the bunny was so fucking cute!!!! Until...... it gained super powers and decided to stay with the ugly green love interest?? Wtf... like wtf that was so unnecessary??? A love plot for the bunnies?? Why??? Whyyyyyyyyyyy
- the moon city wasn’t anything special... apart from shiny it was very bland. I wish they had kept more of Chinese culture in it but i did see something on chang’e’s room i think
- every single comic refiro in this movie was BEYOND THE MOON ANNOYING!!!!!!! I understand, even tho i dont aprove it, the existence of the annoying ass 8 year old brother.... BUT THE GREEN DOG TOO???? WHYWHYWHYWHY AND HE SINGS??? NO SHUT UP SHUT UP!!!!!! He had a cute design but everytime he was there and opened his mouth i just wanted to shoot him I’m not kidding i hate him! NOT TO MENTION that he basically did the relationship development between the siblings in the brothers place!!!! Why does the dog exist????? Fei fei should have bounded in the adventure with the brother!!!! Oh i hated that so much..... I’m so mad.... without the green dog the movie wouldn’t have these weak as hell points
- the ending where the lover fades was ok but just ok. I feel like it was either too rushed and he was disappearing before i even noticed and before he even said anything meaningful or it should have been like the one in onward. It just had little impact imo
- the songs have GREAT VOCALS, the singers are definitely the best part, catchy instrumentals, even tho I’m starting to agree that these movies rely too much on pop songs and not actually musical worthy songs, and the lyrics are bad, really bad.... corny too. So basically about the songs: great vocals, ok instrumentals, bad lyrics. But I’m sure ill rewatch chang’e’s songs cause i love her. Maybe the songs will grow on me with time who knows
- the humor is very modern and i just dont think it fits these kind of movies... the same happened with Moana. It just doesn’t fit the epic adventure with gods vibe i think? It’s also just bad. The comic reliefs were annoying, there’s really no other word, but even the humor from other characters or scenes didnt work
- there’s some very inventive animation here, i loved how they used 2d art even tho i wanted more of it. I love glen keane and how his art style translated. I feel like we can see a bit of him on his disney work but here it just really looked like his art u know? Really good
- i dont like the “the movie had a good message so its good” kind of thought cause many terrible movies have great messages and many great movies have repetitive messages. I thought the message in this movie was a bit repetitive but what made it different for me was that both characters were grieving the loss of different loves, motherly and romantic, and yet they were feeling the same and had to help each other and move on. I dread the day that comes for me. It was nice for fei fei to feel she wasn’t the only one with that pain even tho she just had to move on if she was.
Ok so i think thats it
I think this review i came out too negative but I’m just really torn. There’s some parts of this movie that I couldn’t get enough of and, unfortunately, other parts that were making me wanna turn it off.... i could have ignored the cliches but the 2 very annoying comic characters were too damn much
But i think the positives outweigh the negatives even so
I think I’ll give it a 6/10 or 6.5
Klaus is still my fave animated Netflix movie

Over the Moon Review
So I saw the trailer for OtM and thought it looked cute, but wasn’t sure I was ready to be disappointed by another animated film. Then I figured, well, it’s directed and produced by Glen Keane, it’s probably not bad. I went in with zero expectations and ended up so pleasantly surprised.
Over the Moon is honestly wonderful.
I thought the designs were adorable! Very cute, very Disney-esque, and I loved the cute family dynamic without it being too saccharine.
Tumblr media
It was nice to see that Fei Fei and her Dad had a relationship, so often in these movies, it’s an out of touch Dad who isn’t really involved and the mother is already dead, but here we got to see them as a family, together, and deliver the story of Chang’e, all while using the dialogue and music to make it clear that this was also a story of two people who loved each other.
Tumblr media
Normally I hate musicals (mostly live action), but I’ve always been a fan of the style of musicals that drive the plot forward and 90s Disney had perfected this, and Glen Keane definitely delivered in the same style. So we reach a point where Fei Fei’s mom has gotten sicker and eventually passed away, and Fei Fei now helps her Dad run the mooncake shop.
Tumblr media
Then, four years later, her father meets another woman, and we see Fei Fei struggling to understand how her father could forget her mother and dedicates all her energy to trying to reach Chang’e and remind her father that love is forever.
I love this because I thought Fei Fei’s interactions with the new woman were realistic. Her father doesn’t know how to break the news to her, that he’s met someone new, but Fei Fei picks up on all the cues that there’s obviously something going on between her father and this woman. And as someone whose parents divorced, and who handled new partners similarly, I liked how believable Fei Fei’s reaction was. She wasn’t deliberately disrespectful, but she maintained a deliberate distance and kept bringing up her mother as a boundary for this new woman, and a reminder for her father. It was very well done.
I love that when Fei Fei meets Chang’e for the first time, she’s this vapid, self involved pop star and completely different from the way Fei Fei has idealized her in her head.
Tumblr media
But as the story progresses, we learn Chang’e used to be kind, and thoughtful, but the loss of her lover, Houyi made Chang’e hard and selfish and hyperfocused on bringing him back to her.
I LOVED that Fei Fei and Chang’e were mirrors of each other, both of them stuck, unsure how to move on past the loss of someone they loved so much, and they help each other through their shared grief. I thought that was such a beautiful touch.
Tumblr media
This was basically the point where I actually started crying. Grief and loss is something that can change a person’s life forever, and the simple question of “but how?” to moving on, was met and answered in a way I thought was simple and authentic and very moving.
Overall, I ended up really moved and surprised by this movie. I loved the way 2D animation was woven together with CG. The moon world was weird and cute and wonderful and the attention to detail was phenomenal. I loved that Fei Fei’s bunny and her step-brother’s frog didn’t talk, and I thought it was profound that Fei Fei was able to love her bunny enough to let her go. So many details I love about this movie. This was a very simple story, and I love(d) that because it was about something. A child losing her parent, a woman losing the love of her life, it was clear, it didn’t really matter who or how, but that that person was lost to you, and that moving on was okay. That moving on didn’t mean you stopped loving them, it just meant your heart “grew bigger” to love other people too. Movies like this are honestly why I geared my entire life towards this field. How it might touch a kid who has lost a parent, or someone who has lost someone they love, and reach them. That animation can be more than just selling toys and cashing in on franchises. I’m so glad I watched this.

Just like old times, I’m going to make some Best Animated Feature Oscar predictions...
Thanks to streaming and other alternative methods, a good number of animated features were released in the hell-year that was 2020. We still got a Pixar film, we got two DreamWorks pictures, but we also were lucky to get a wide variety of smaller films as well. This season, we’ll see five candidates vying for best animated feature of 2020. This morning, we got the Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture - Animated. They are:
Pete Docter and Kemp Powers’ ambitious, weighty Pixar odyssey SOUL
Dan Scanlon’s Pixar fantasy adventure mashup ONWARD
Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart’s innovative, atmospheric fantasy WOLFWALKERS
Glen Keane’s heart-smothered moon musical OVER THE MOON
and lastly, DreamWorks’ wild sequel THE CROODS: A NEW AGE. I have yet to see that film. My plans to see it safely were knocked right off course this past autumn, and I don’t want to pay $20 for something I’m going to watch all by myself only once or twice. I’m going to blind buy the Blu-ray, because I’m sure to like the film.
The tangent aside, I think this gives us a fair idea of what the Oscar nomination slots will look like.
For me, the definites are SOUL, WOLFWALKERS, and OVER THE MOON.
SOUL, it’s obvious why. It might even be nominated for Best Picture. If so, that’s the first time an animated feature has ever been nominated in that category since 2010′s TOY STORY 3. That was a decade ago. It would be the fourth animated movie **ever** to achieve this, too. (A depressingly low number, the best animated movies of any given year should be nominated for BP as well.) Pete Docter’s 2-for-3 when it comes to this category; his MONSTERS, INC. lost to SHREK, long considered a mistake on the Academy’s part. His UP got nominated for Best Picture, and easily took home BAF. INSIDE OUT won for 2015. SOUL might just be it, but it’s surely a lock for nomination. 105%.
Similarly, Cartoon Saloon and Tomm Moore are Oscar bonafides. Moore’s THE SECRET OF KELLS and SONG OF THE SEA were nominated in their respective years, and Nora Twomey’s THE BREADWINNER was nominated in its release year as well. WOLFWALKERS is a lock, and being acclaimed, free of any potential controversies (unlike SOUL), and being much more easier to access than previous Cartoon Saloon pictures (which were released by GKIDS in less than 500 cinemas each time out), this one could very well win it. I know it’s the one **I** myself am rooting for.
OVER THE MOON is being pushed by Netflix, its distributor here in the states. I think this, combined with Disney maverick Glen Keane being director, and the musical elements, make this one a strong candidate, though I don’t see it winning due to SOUL and WOLFWALKERS being robust. That being said, it’s easily getting nominated. Out of the few animated features Netflix released in 2020, this one’s clearly the favorite. I honestly would’ve pushed for THE WILLOUGHBYS, but maybe that one - something of a twisted dark comedy in the vain of a Roald Dahl story - was too outre for some? Maybe the familiar heartfelt musical was the easier ticket?
So... What do I think will fill the other two slots?
Sometimes, the Globe’s choices skew more mainstream than the Academy’s. With the animation branch nominating the pictures, we are bound to see some smaller films in there. I think ONWARD and THE CROODS: A NEW AGE will give way to such films... What do I think the two will be?
For me, the first choice is rather easy. FARMAGEDDON: A SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE. Aardman. Stop-motion. Critically acclaimed. The original was beloved and was nominated in its release year. Aardman stop-motion films never miss the slot. CHICKEN RUN is mostly why the Best Animated Feature category exists in the first place. The only times Aardman ever missed the slots were with their CG films. (It also helps that a lot of 2011′s crop was so strong, that ARTHUR CHRISTMAS was probably not a guarantee to begin with.) But w/ Netflix being its distributor, I think it has a big chance to come in along with OVER THE MOON.
The fifth? This is a little more open. So far we have one big studio picture released by the biggest of the biggies (Disney, obvs), an Aardman film, an Irish indie, and a Disney legend-helmed musical. It could be anything. Maybe the DEMON SLAYER movie, given how well that’s doing in its home country, and sometimes the Academy makes room for an anime film. Maybe Remi Chaye’s CALAMITY has a shot? Or maybe it’s the CGI’ed LUPIN THE III movie? A WHISKEY AWAY could work out, but Netflix probably will get two slots. If no FARMAGEDDON, it could either be that or WILLOUGHBYS. The rest don’t sound like definites, given how the Oscars tend to gloss over the further corners of animated features. They go indie, but just enough. Not full force... WOLFWALKERS, perhaps, fills the indie quota, along with the Aardman movie and the mid-scale Netflix musical... So that slot five will go to another mainstreamer.
Out of the mainstreamers, I think the ones with the highest chances are ONWARD and the two DreamWorks sequels. THE CROODS 2 more so than TROLLS WORLD TOUR, given the warmer reception and fairly successful run in theaters (for a movie that opened amidst a pandemic with a custom release window), plus it’s up for the Globe. DreamWorks often gets shut out of races, probably because competition is usually so strong. They did get a slot with the final HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON film, and THE BOSS BABY, more recently. The original CROODS was up for best of 2013, too. It could very well be the cavemen once more. What else is there? SCOOB! got mixed reception and seems to have been forgotten. (I thought it was alright.) Despite being eligible, the latest SPONGEBOB won’t be it, either. The previous two SpongeBob movies weren’t, so I doubt this would be, too. Heck, it might just be ONWARD, given that it was also Pixar (released by big bad Disney) and was also critically liked and also got a Globe nomination. But surprisingly, the Academy didn’t do a two-for-Disney for their 2019 crop: Pixar’s TOY STORY 4 was in that race (and won), but Disney Animation’s FROZEN II - despite getting good reviews, making $1.4 billion worldwide, and the original being the winner in its respective year - was left out. The last two times Pixar released two movies in a calendar year, only one of the two got nominated. INSIDE OUT ran for 2015, THE GOOD DINOSAUR wasn’t nominated. Ditto 2017, COCO ran, CARS 3 didn’t. Interestingly, neither of those years had a Disney Animation picture, either. 2020 didn’t, for RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON opens next month. Looking at it this way, it seems very, very tight...
With that, I think the race will be between...
SOUL, WOLFWALKERS, OVER THE MOON, FARMAGEDDON: A SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE, and THE CROODS: A NEW AGE.
What are your predictions?

Oh football!
So, I realise for people who aren’t into football this will clearly be quite bookish. However, I have recently been reading “The Promised Land” by Anthony Clavane. Its basically about the history of Leeds United post World War 2 and also semi-autobiographical in respect of his life as a Jewish Leeds United fan and the city as a whole. It’s brilliant. I’ve just got to the part where the Premier League starts (1992/1993) and Leeds sell Cantona to Man United for £1.3 million; a transfer described by Clavane as “the worst transfer decision in the history of football.
This got me thinking; there is loads about football history (specifically English) that I don’t know about (obviously) purely because I either wasn’t born, I was too young to be aware of the information or that its been consigned to the annals of time because it’s considered generally too boring or not relevant to recall by fans and media outlets alike. Therefore, when I was looking for something to do last night I noticed MOTD Top 10 FA Cup moments was on BBC1; in lieu of any real football due to the COVID. Oh how I miss football...
Anyway, I thought I would give this a go because I hoped it might fill in some of my gaps in knowledge and at the very least entertain me. Oh how wrong I was. I’m being over dramatic. The goals and clips were all fabulous clearly; however between the 50 year period they seemed to cover and Alan Shearer’s dull commentary (sorry Alan, you’re a Magpie Legend/Martyr but you are extremely dull) the programme just lacked any cohesion, sense of narrative or general bite or Va Va Voom (”Thiery, woah oh!”).
Yes Ian Wrights commentary on his own career is always extremely interesting because of the character that he is and the adversity that he had to overcome; but Gary Linekar? I am sorry but it is time that smug bastard got off TV and gave some one else a go. And I am sorry, but there was literally no discussion of the on going COVID preparations for the Prem’s mooted behind closed doors return. How about discussing and commenting on this rather than relying on the fact that the presenters are using Zoom, to create any semblance of relevance to anything at the moment?
That got me thinking. With, the Bundesliga (an un-competitive league at the best of times) behind closed doors looking like a series of bad training games gone wrong, and the Championship and Prem not coming back for at least another month (?); I still need to fill my football fix. Enter the above video. I have watched Premier League Season reviews before; and they are un-ashamedly great! I think I am going to try and watch every season up till the current one when I have nothing to!
I tried to start from the first season of the Premier League 1992/1993, where Man United win the league for the first time under Fergie from the afore mentioned Leeds United; who the year before won the last season of the Old Division 1 proper in 1991/1992 with the infamous French man (his last season for the club and ironically the last time Leeds conquered the English Football Pyramid). Alas, there was no review available on YouTube (?). So I had to start here at 1993/1994.
Whilst the review is in 3 parts and its not the most exhilarating season (the commentary provided throughout does its best to reduce any excitement anyway), it’s worth a watch for some of the highlights I have detailed below! And bringing me back to my earlier point, there are loads of interesting snippets and forgotten pieces of trivia that have been lost to the football fan trivia annuls of time (or at least that a late 80′s lad such as myself won’t necessarily know anyway!). So without further a do, here are some of the more interesting highlights (and low lights!) i picked out incase you are too busy getting pissed on the semi-locked down bank holiday (!):
Part 1
The review begins with a blatant double footed tackle that would have easily been deemed a red in the modern game!
Roy Keane signing for Man United.
Old shots of Old Trafford looking tiny!
Glen Hoddle (a Chelsea Legend and eventual bigoted hate monger) becoming player manager of Spurs!
Aston Villa with an Opera Singer in the dressing as they are presumably getting ready for a match?! (Who knows?!).
Advertising boards with “Street Fighter” and “Sega” on them!
John Fasanu brazenly assaulting the Spurs captain Gary Mabbutt (breaking his face) and the English FA running an “anti-elbow” campaign!
Peter Reid being sacked as Man City Player/Manager (in his first managerial role!) after 6 days (!) and Man City fans rioting in front of Maine Road and the Rozzers turning up on horse back to control said riot! Oh English football!
The emergence of 2 icons in football; Andy Cole (who goes on to have a 41 goal season; 34 in the Prem) and Ian Wright on his way to becoming an Arsenal legend.
Part 2
Tony Adams heading it into his own net! Never gets old!
A young Alan Shearer being interviewed after a Blackburn game and still managing to bore the pants off you.
The death of Sir Matt Busby during January of 1994; the man credited for putting Man United on the map.
Various Matt Le Tissier and Ryan Giggs pingers!
Souness resigning from Liverpool with the Reds 5th in the table and 23 points off first; oh how times have changed these days!
Oldham, Sheff United and Swindon in the Premier League! Spoiler alert - it doesn’t last long.
Blackburn Rovers playing in their AC Milan-esque away kit! Classic.
Paul Ince showing his class at Man United before he goes on to betray the club.
Part 3
Peter Beardsley scoring for his beloved Newcastle. I am sorry but any time any one mentions him these days I just instantly think of Bob Mortimer’s imagined impressions of him every week on Athletico Mince. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqwLFGMHiy4
Mark Hughes scoring for Man U and being recorded in the music studio singing a Man United song I have been unable to find (?!).
Cantona being sent off twice and banned for 5 games and being criticised by Alan Hansen in the MOTD studio in his very 90′s suit.
Vinnie Jones and the crazy gang beating Man U (eventual winners) and Blackburn (2nd place and next seasons winners).
Steve Bruce leading out Man United (to defeat!) in the top of table clash vs Blackburn.
An Eric Cantona homage and montage to the tune of “Isn’t she lovely” by Stevie Wonder!! Yes this actually happens!! Big WTF from me there.
The last season of standing and terraces on the Kop at Anfield.
22 teams in the Prem.
Man U lifting the trophy and saying goodbye to Bryan Robson after 13 years.
So there you have it, if you are missing football and want to fill in some of your gaps in knowledge of the English Game/obtain a load of useless facts; season reviews are my recommendations! For now anyway!
