Facts About Tongue Cancer

Tongue cancer constitutes 2% of all the categories of cancer. It has become quite common in men compared to women and is generally found in people below 40 years of age. When the cells present in the tongue start dividing uncontrollably, the formation of a mass or tumor takes place, which leads to tongue cancer.

Depending upon the area affected by cancer, it is of two types:

●     Oral Tongue Cancer

It occurs when the outer portion of the tongue, which a person can move voluntarily, is affected.

●     Oropharyngeal Tongue Cancer

It occurs when the inner portion of the tongue sticking towards the throat (pharynx) is affected by cancer.

 Treatment for tongue cancer of both types is available.

CAUSES OF TONGUE CANCER

There are many reasons for tongue cancer, ranging from natural causes to unhealthy human habits. These are:

●     Smoking

●     Chewing betel quid or gutka

●     Alcohol consumption

●     Tobacco consumption

●     Jagged teeth

●     Particular genetic variation of Anemia

●     Not taking care of oral hygiene

●     Graft versus host disease (a condition seen in patients of stem cell transplantation)

●     Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection ( transmitted through sexual activity, even oral sex)

SYMPTOMS OF TONGUE CANCER

Common symptoms of tongue cancer include:

●     Sore mouth

●     Numbness in the mouth

●     Pain or any discomfort in speaking, chewing and swallowing

●     Changed voice

●     Bleeding tongue

●     White or red spots/patches on the tongue

●     Feeling of a blocked throat, or feeling hard mass/lump in the throat

DIAGNOSIS OF TONGUE CANCER

If these symptoms don’t go away in a week or so, consult your dentist or a doctor. There are mainly two ways to examine these symptoms and diagnose the type of tongue cancer you may have:

●   Tissue Biopsy

It is generally used for oropharyngeal tongue cancer. A sample of tissue (especially squamous cells) is taken from your mouth and sent to the laboratory for examination.

●   X-ray or CT Scans

TREATMENT FOR TONGUE CANCER
