Youzitsu 2nd Year Arc 1
Tumblr media
Author: Syougo Kinugasa
Illustrator: Tomoseshunsaku
Label: MF Bunko J
Release Date: 24 January 2020
My Score: 3/5
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment is currently releasing this series in English under the title of Classroom of the Elite: Year 2.
Class D managed to survive the first year with little casualties and have started the 2nd year and are immediately plunged into a new trial. They are told to download a new app which gives them information on other students’ abilities and are going to be pairing up with some first year students to study together for upcoming tests where they will be evaluated on their combined scores. This presents a problem for Ayanokouji who knows that one 1st year student comes from the white room and will be trying to get Ayanokouji expelled and could easily do so if they were paired up with him.
One of the issues I’ve been having with this series is how we usually spend so much time in the lead-up to the trial that the trial itself is over super quickly. Like, in this volume, most of it is about Ayanokouji and Horikita searching for partners, and we don’t get to see the 2nd and 1st year students actually working together to pass the test. I always expect the volume to go into more detail about the end of the trial and it never does and it’s starting to get really disappointing. I don’t think this was as much of an issue in the earlier volumes either and I think those early volumes were stronger than the recent volumes that I’ve read.
I also find that Kinugasa has a habit of over-explaining basic concepts. Often, ideas that could easily be explained in one or two paragraphs end up taking up over 10 pages of dialogue for characters to explain. It’s really annoying and is a big issue in this volume.
As for this volume itself, it was fine overall but I wish it was better. The new characters are okay but they don’t breathe a whole lot of new life into this series like I was hoping for them to. They could be interesting but I miss the days when the cast was smaller. Poor Airi really hasn’t had anything to do since volume 6.
Cover characters for this volume are Ayanokouji himself and Nanase, a first-year. Nanase is another thing about this volume that is just fine. She could be interesting in future volumes but we don’t learn a whole lot about her here and if she wasn’t the cover girl, I probably wouldn’t remember her.
I am now caught up with all of the volumes that I own. I do want to continue with this series because it can be really good at times but I’ve found the recent volumes pretty disappointing and I’m not motivated to continue it just yet so I’ll take a break before I continue.
Due to life circumstances, I probably won’t be posting much this month so apologies for that.

Classroom of the Elite, Vol. 2
By Syougo Kinugasa and Tomoseshunsaku. Released in Japan by Media Factory. Released in North America by Seven Seas. Translated by Timothy MacKenzie. Adapted by Jessica Cluess.
Tempting as it is to paste my review of the first volume in for the second and see if anyone notices, I will make an effort to say new things. The series’ strengths and weaknesses remain the same. It’s compulsively readable, always a good thing. Its premise can be teeth-grindingly annoying, especially when everyone turns into a vicious sadist for no reason, with a lot of “ha ha, you will fail forever now” sneering. I’m still not entirely clear if this school has a purpose beyond abusing 1/4 of its student body, and I suspect this is not a question I’m going to get answered anytime soon. We do get a couple of new characters here, though, including one who I actually did not want to punch in the face, which is a monstrous improvement from the first book. Sadly, she isn’t in Class D, meaning I am probably out of luck unless we get a spinoff series or something. Plus honestly, shee likely has a dark side too.
The other new character introduced is Sakura, who isn’t annoying so much as passive. In fact, her very passivity is the problem, as she’s also an important witness to an assault by Class D hothead Sudo on three Class C students. He now faces suspension, of course, and every single thing over the course of the entire book does not help his cause. First off, he’s claiming self-defense, but that’s hard to prove when you beat up three guys and you’re fine. Secondly, no one believes him anyway because his first response is to punch everything. Of course, if Sudo gets suspended Class D will lose the few points they gained from the first book (which aren’t given to them as money, by the way – it’s implied they never will be). Can the rest of the class overcome their antipathy towards Sudo and apathy in general and help clear his name? Or will they need to be a bit more… creative?
As I said, there’s also a girl from Class B that we briefly met in the first book but who gets a genuine introduction here. Ichinose is so refreshingly normal that I was almost crying in happiness. She’s friendly and outgoing without (so far) having a scheming dark side like Kushida. She tries to use Ayanokouji to help her with a problem (girl is confessing to her, need a pretend boyfriend). She ends up being of great help to them in the climax of the book. Really, I want her to be the star. She’s certainly more fun to read than grumpy Horikita, who spends the book attempting to help Sudo while being miserable about it, or our “hero” Ayanokouji, whose desire to be average and not stand out is so great that even his own inner narration lies to us – frequently he talks about Kushida as if he knows nothing about her secrets, and there are other points where I suspect he’s straight up lying to the reader. Which is the point – their teacher is trying to get Horikita to figure out why he’s like this – but again, it’s not what I’d call fun.
I can see why this is popular – I sped through it very quickly, and want to read more. This despite the fact that I was frowning most of the time and occasionally wanted to slam the book against a wall. Classroom of the Elite is a war between the writing and the characterization, and it may take more than two volumes to figure out who’s winning.

Youzitsu 11.5

This is the final volume of the 1st year arc. It covers the events of Spring Vacation and deals with the graduation of the third years and the fallout from last volume’s trial.
A lot of this volume just felt like set-up for the second year arc and there were so many scenes that seemed to drag on forever. I enjoyed seeing the results of Horikita’s growth over the year but I found her story line with her brother dragged as well. I was happy to see more of Hiyori but I found hers and Ichinose’s stories to be a bit dull and unmemorable. But I really enjoyed the final two stories. One of them was about Matsushita, one of Kei’s friends. She’s started to notice that there’s more to Ayanokouji than meets the eye. I enjoyed seeing a side character getting fleshed out like that and we get to know more about her and she seems pretty interesting. And the final chapter... I don’t want to spoil it but there was a development that happened in it that was very interesting and makes me very excited to start the second year arc. Overall, I thought this was a much more satisfying climax and conclusion than volume 11 was but I did find a lot of the scenes just went on for too long and ended up becoming dull.
Heading into the second year arc, the characters that I want to see more of most are Hiyori and Koenji. I feel like we still barely know anything about Hiyori and I’m so intrigued by her. Koenji has started to get more focus in these last volumes but I feel like we’re only scratching the surface of his character and I really want to know more.
As for the first year arc as whole, I’ve enjoyed it much more than I was expecting to. There have been so many interesting ideas and exciting developments. I have found that a lot of the scenes where characters are just talking do tend to drag and the volumes after volume 7.5 have been a bit of a let-down but it’s been a good experience overall and I’m looking forward to starting the second-year arc.

It’s finally time for the last trial of the 1st year. This time, each class has to pick out activities that they are confident they could win. These activities can be written tests, card games, sports events, etc. Then, classes will be chosen to pair off and face each other in seven of these activities. One member of each class is chosen to head up the “control tower” and decide who is participating in each event. Ayanokouji is chosen to participate in this activity because he got the Protection Point last volume and it seems like Arisu will get her wish: a showdown with Ayanokouji. Meanwhile, Hirata has changed since the events of last volume and the expulsion of Yamauchi. He’s become distant and has been avoiding getting involved in the new trial.
This volume didn’t quite meet my expectations as the climax of the first year arc. I was really expecting the second and third years to have more to do with the plot but I don’t think Nagumo showed up even once this volume. I found that there was a lot of lead-up to the trial but the trial itself was over too quickly and I would have liked to have seen all of the characters that we have seen grow get more of a chance to shine. They get some small moments, like Sudou not being as quick to anger, but I wanted more than that. It didn’t feel like the ending of a series and I guess that’s a good thing as it isn’t and there’s still a side volume and a whole other series to go but I wanted more of a sense of satisfaction and closure.
Still, this is an excellent and entertaining volume so I can’t be too mad. The showdown between Ayanokouji and Arisu is as exciting as expected and I enjoyed that this trial tested Ayanokouji on his weak point: getting to know his classmates. Because he is in charge of which classmate is participating in which event, he needs to know who is good at what and who does not get along with who. Aside from a couple of people, Ayanokouji is closed off from his classmates so of course he knows very little about them so he needs help from Kei, Kikyou, whose information is never guaranteed to be truthful, and Hirata, who is refusing to talk to anyone. This is an interesting situation and it makes Ayanokouji less of an OP protagonist.
Cover boy this time is Kouenji and cover girl is Meiyui. Kouenji is starting to participate more in the trials but the others still don’t understand him. They don’t know when he’s going to show up and do his best for the class or when he’s going to skip the trial entirely. Still, they can’t deny that he is an asset when he does show up so they’ve got to figure out whether they can rely on him this time. Meiyui is a student from China and gets along with everyone. She has a crush on Hirata and is the only one to continue to try to communicate with him as the others see him as a lost cause. I know by now that the characters on the cover do not necessarily get the main focus in the volume but I was expecting these two to get more to do in the climax. At least they actually did have important parts to play in this volume, unlike last volume’s cover characters.
Next up is volume 11.5 which is the true end of the 1st-year arc and I hope it satisfies me more than this volume did in that regard.

The results for final exams are out and it seems like Class C are in the clear but before they can really relax, of course the final trial for the year will be held in another week. Just when they think they can rest for a week, the school announces a special trial that will be held before the final one. No 1st years have been expelled this year which is an anomaly in the school’s history. To solve this, the special trial is a voting one. Students will vote for someone to get a special protection point that will allow them to avoid being expelled if they ever fail a test or trial but they will also vote for someone to be expelled from the school. The only way to avoid being expelled is to gather enough points but the price is so high that even if a class pooled all of their points together, it would not be enough to save them. With the end of the 1st year just around the corner, it looks like some students will finally be expelled.
This was a much more interesting volume than the last two were. It was really entertaining to see the tension rising and how the different classes were planning to deal with this trial. I did think that some of the scenes were unnecessary and went on for too long. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this volume and it has renewed my interest in the series. I am now once again excited to see how the 1st year arc is going to end.
Cover characters for this volume are current student council president Nagumo and another 2nd-year student whose name I don’t remember. She appears only once in this volume and I think she appeared only once in volume 8 so she hasn’t done a whole lot. The only thing we really know about her is that she’s in the same class as Nagumo and she seems nice. Nagumo also doesn’t appear that much either in this volume. His only role is to act as a looming threat as he makes contact with Horikita and offers to make a deal with Ichinose for more points so that she can avoid having one of her classmates expelled.
