OJT EATS | Abura Soba

So as much as Japan and Tokyo is known for its ramen, it's always tonkotsu or sometimes miso ramen that gets the most attention. It's amazing how many other types of ramen there are and one that we have come to really like is abura soba. Despite the name soba, abura soba is made with ramen noodles and is, unlike tonkotsu, brothless.

We were looking for a late night snack on our way home and decided to go try Abura Soba. It had been recommended to us by OJT's own EE so we were looking forward to good things! Once we got in, things were very similar to any other ramen store with a long counter in front of the kitchen and ordering through a vending machine. It's always nice to see the chefs working away while you wait for your food.

Beer does go awfully well with ramen of any type so couldn't resist a nice cold glass of this Premium Yebisu. It's not a beer I see often, especially in London but it was pretty light, super cold and really refreshing.

After not too long, our noodles arrived. Luckily, the counter had some instructions so we knew that there was sauce at the bottom and that we'd need to mix it all up to enjoy and let the egg yolk mix into that sauce to make it lovely and rich.

While it may not be quite as attractive as before it was mixed up, damn, this was tasty! We got it a little bit spicy so there was a bit of a kick to it but the sauce itself was incredibly more-ish and that extra richness from the egg yolk was delicious.

This was one of the best bowls of ramen we had in Tokyo this trip. While it may not be as warming as a big bowl of soup noodles, it was so addictive. Turns out they have a branch in Taipei as well so looking forward to trying that!

When I have ramen I normally get so full I cannot finish the broth, this time I was so surprised I drank it all! It was so delicious!!!! I had a Wontonmen on a clear soup, it was softly scented with a citric, which I suppose it was yuzu (my favorite Japanese citric). The pork was soft and flavorful. What I loved about the broth was that it was not too salty not too dull, just perfect that all the other flavors could stand out, the dumplings where light and the filling of pork was so well spiced. We were wondering around the swanky neighbourhood of Ginza when we noticed what looked like a queue down a tiny little alleyway. We followed our curiosity, knowing that when you see a queue in Asia, there's a good chance it's becasue they are waiting for food and realised that they were indeed getting ready to go into a tiny little noodle shop Kagari Soba. We hadn't had lunch yet so we decided to join the queue.

We saw that they had a tsukemen on their menu so we thought we'd give it a go. These were the noodles that came with the low temperature cooked pork and chicken and some bamboo on the side. Because of the low temperature it was cooked at, the meat was super tender and really tasty.

This was the dipping sauce that it came with. It was much lighter than we were expecting but still had a great depth of flavour. We are more used to a more fish stock thicker sauce whereas this was more of a soy based one. While this was definitely good, we decided we still prefer a stronger thicker dipping sauce for our tsukemen (keep coming back for when we post our review on Tsukemen Michi).

Because we ordered the special version of the tsukemen, it came with an extra portion of meat as well as some veg and an egg. The egg was super tasty and it was nice to have some veg. For the extra couple of hundred yen, it felt pretty worth it.

As we've gotten used to now, the typical ramen side is a bowl of rice and this place was no different. Here, they have a char siu chicken on buttered rice and truffled soy sauce. This was delicious! White rice, butter and a bit of soy is such an under-rated combination. Then add on super tender chicken on top and you have a winner!

Now finally onto the chicken broth ramen that this place is known for. Chicken ramen is normally much lighter in flavour than something like tonkotsu but this was super rich and just an explosion of flavour; so good! The noodles were cooked to perfection as well and it definitely warrants the queues out the door!

This place is really tucked away in Ginza but you can spot it by looking for the queues. If you are in Ginza and am looking for a nice bowl of noodles, I'd definitely recommend you go find this place. It'll be a bit of a wait but it's worth it!
