Thess vs Controllers

Dear game developers:

I would like to flag up with the increasingly problematic issue of PC ports. Or rather, you being somewhat shit at them.

Now, please understand. I am not giving console players shit here. I think that “console gamer vs PC gamer” bullshit is ... well, just that; bullshit. People have ways they prefer to play. It’s just that a lot of people who play video games (or at least those of them who make playing video games a shorthand for their personality) have taken so much shit that they need to feel superior somewhere, and that’s the hill they’ve chosen to die on. Now, I don’t like that part of it very much, for one simple reason:

I CANNOT USE A CONSOLE.

Now, part of this is about money. I mean, given the economic mess we’re living in, fair enough. I have a perfectly good PC; why should I spend that much money on another method of playing games? Especially ones that won’t let me have chat from friends or an episode of something on the second monitor. I love my Gilmore, as I loved Morrigan, Leandra, Frankenbox, all the way down to Crudpuppy twenty or so years ago. Why would I want or need anything else?

Thing is ... it’s not just about money. If it was, I would have worked around it, because I really want to play Horizon: Forbidden West and Guerilla is notoriously slow at PC ports for those games. Still, if it means as good a PC port as Horizon: Zero Dawn was, I’ll happily wait. Because that’s the other reason why I cannot use a console instead of will not:

I. AM. FUCKING. DISABLED.

Console controllers are heavier than they were when I was younger. Rumble packs and so many buttons and thumb-sticks and I don’t even know half the time. They are heavy, and they require a certain two-hand grip to hold. Because I have fibromyalgia, I cannot maintain that two-handed grip for long, especially when I am having to hold something that weighs much of anything. I’d probably struggle with the old lightweight NES controllers that came with my first and only console (yes, I am that old). The new ones? Not a chance in hell.

You know what this also means? It means that, if you throw out a PC port and say you ‘recommend’ using a controller because you haven’t really bothered working out a K&M configuration that works to any great degree, I cannot play it. Because it’s not the console itself; it’s that I physically cannot use the controller.

Do you know how many games I picked up the demos to and had to uninstall without touching because they recommended a controller and I tried to use keyboard and mouse anyway and it was a fucking nightmare? I own a copy of CODE VEIN thanks to my bestie and I can’t play it because BANDAI NAMCO fucked up the PC port to the point where no matter what you do with your keybinds, you need to use right-shift for one particular element of combat. Which is ridiculous because the whole point of console gaming that combat-heavy is left hand on keyboard (mostly for WASD) and right hand for mouse, and how the fuck are you supposed to take your hands off either of those to press right-shift mid-combat? Left hand? Even if it didn’t take your hands of the movement keys in the middle of combat, it’s not just right-shift you’re pressing; it’s right-shift plus a thing on the left side of the keyboard. Right hand? It’s left mouse key to attack; taking your hands off the mouse mid combat is just as bad as the alternative.

I know some games are built for controllers. I mean, I don’t like it, but if you want to lose the PC market, that’s your business. I can respect a company saying, “We tried a PC port for this but could not get it right so it’s console only”. (It’s better than being trapped in console exclusivity by Sony or Microsoft wanting money, anyway.) However, what I do not have any time for are games that throw half-assed PC ports at people and go, “Well, it’s fine if you use a controller”. Some of us can’t. So ignoring the K&M option on your PC port is garbage.

Please do better, or stop teasing people like me and then torturing us with a janky, unintuitive nonsense of a PC port where the keyboard and mouse are concerned. Or at least think for five seconds before you hard-lock an entirely unintuitive keybind.

HG RX-78 MS00Z Gundam GP00 [Engage Zero] – A Review

 Pre-ordered in October. Shipped out in March. Missed the mentioned arrival date by a Day as the tracker didn’t bother to update when it was delayed thanks to *Gestures at the recent chaotic weather* all of this “Totally Normal" March weather system.

 That’s right! That monochrome box can only mean one thing: My P-Bandai exclusive Engage Zero has Finally Arrived! = D

 What follows is the basics of the build. It was a fairly easy and smooth build that was pretty fun. So sit back, get comfy and enjoy the read. = )

 So here’s the deal... I pre-ordered this on the US Premium Bandai website back in October. The thing about P-Bandai (especially the US site) is that kits tend to sell out fast. This means that, when the Engage Zero went up for sale, I jumped on it ASAP.

 Turns out I really didn’t need to as I’m Pretty Sure you can still order a kit from the US P-Bandai site at the time of this posting. o.o

 Anyhoo! Now that I got this kit in and got the change to build it, I'm really happy I didn't risk the wait. The Engage Zero is a neat little kit. The story is it’s supposed to be a Federation/Zeon joint creation and you can tell in the build. The head and body have a lot of design cues from the classic RX-78. The colors are very much Gundam Mk.II inspired. The limbs are VERY Much inspired by Zeon suits. It sports a back skirt similar to the Qubeley with some Neo-Zeon flavored arms and legs. The beam rifle has a Gundam SEED feel and the shield looks like it’d be at home in Gundam AGE.

 As for the build… it has a handful of color stickers. It’s not a Terrible amount, but it does have some to add some red bits to the arms, legs and Gigantic space backpack. The only stickers I used were the eyes, a handful for the lenses and I tried for the classic Gundam “Crotch V-Fin". See... this is an area that – in the past - questioned if it really needed a large sticker for. Most times, the bulk of sticker is the same color as the plastic piece you’re putting it on with only the V-Fin being different. Well… this kit came with Just the V-Fin.

 To give you an idea of the size of the this detail: It’s so small on HG kits that you can just leave it blank and the natural highlight and shading of any kind of light setup will make it pop and noticeable.

 This kit comes with this teeny tiny fiddly little golden metallic sticker for Just the V-Fin. I tried for a few minutes trying to line it up on the piece and get it to wrap around like it should and Yeah! Nope. I took the thing off. Although this was kinda’ sorta' planned to be a straight build, I’m adding that to the list of things to be painted in later. This kit looks great on its own and will look better with some panel lining. It also has a lot of very nice open space that’s just begging for some decals and detailing.

 Final Thoughts: I love it. It's a very feminine looking kit without going the full "Not Sailor Moon" distance that the Nobel Gundam goes. The color separation is great with only a handful of parts needing stickers. Although it comes with a whole thing of polycaps, it hardly uses any. Instead, it has a lot of plastic on plastic joints. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, I’ll find out in time.

 The poseability on this is top notch. Massive space backpack aside, it’s well balanced and can hold a fair number of poses. As others have pointed out, the shoulder armor prevents it from getting its arms to go straight out. Like anything, a little bit of sanding would improve that but it’s not a deal breaker by any means.

 It also does something I rarely see from Bandai – It has a set of open hands, holding hands and a custom trigger hand for the rifle with backing parts for the whole set. That’s Two pairs for basic hands and a special trigger hand with Five backs so you don’t have to loot them from the others just to use them. = )

 Overall, I’m diggin' the Engage Zero. It was a relatively simple build with a nice payoff. I Might try to mod the back to accept something beyond the single post backpacks but, for now, it’s a nice little kit.

I don’t remember whether you’ve discussed this before (and I’m really sorry for bringing it up again if you have!) but why do fans believe that Frontier “killed” the Digimon Franchise?

I noticed you mentioned recently that the creators believed the franchise was on its way out anyway since Tamers, plus I recall that Savers came three years or so after Frontier ended. Since I wasn’t active in the fandom during those discussions, I’m curious to know why fans used the drastic term “killed” when talking about Frontier. I’m guessing it has a lot to do with Frontier being the only season to not have the classic “partner Digimon” concept?

It's really nothing more than faulty logic. Frontier was the last series before Digimon anime screeched to a halt (at least until Savers). So that means, clearly, it didn't do well enough for the franchise to continue. If it had done well enough, they'd have made another series, but they didn't, so that means it was a failure and killed the franchise. Makes sense, right?

Well, technically, it is true that Frontier did badly enough that the franchise died for a time. That's not actually false. It's also true that a yearly anime like Digimon not getting renewed for another year is a very bad sign, and that ever since Frontier the franchise has always been in serious danger of dying, with Savers, Xros Wars, and Appmon all being false starts that never succeeded in fully bringing it back. But it's also true that in order to have saved the franchise from the downward spiral it was already deep in by the time of Tamers, Frontier would probably have had to perform some kind of absolute miracle to save the franchise from not dying. It takes more than just a year to kill a series! Let's look at Digimon toy sales figures from Adventure through Frontier:

Adventure: 16.0 billion yen

02: 14.2 billion yen

Tamers: 7.9 billion yen

Frontier: 4.5 billion yen

So yeah, Frontier's figure is undeniably bad, but a basic understanding of economics tells you it just happens to be in the unfortunate position of being the last one to take the fall in what was already clearly an exponential curve downwards. (In fact, I had the benefit of recently speaking with a Japanese Frontier fan -- and reading their posts even when they weren’t directly talking to me -- who said that they remember Digimon merch lines already starting to die out when Frontier was starting to air, meaning that it was in that self-feeding loop downfall position where they weren't producing the very merch that was supposed to help it gain revenue. We've still never gotten a complete soundtrack release.) And these things fall outside the purview of just Frontier too, because there were also the issues of:

Changing family structures leading to lower viewer ratings and other issues across the board for all anime from all companies

The Pendulum Progress (the V-Pet that Bandai released during Frontier's era) completely bombing, especially due to Bandai's attempt to venture into the Southeast Asian market being handled clumsily

The Toei Anime Fair (that is to say, Toei's structure of showing back-to-back short movies in theaters, which all Digimon movies were released under up until Frontier) bombing at an abysmal one-fifth of the previous year's revenue, resulting in Toei never holding another Anime Fair ever again (previous Toei Anime Fairs with Digimon usually involved sharing with a major big-ticket franchise like One Piece or Doremi, but here it was really just…uh, Kinnikuman)

Basically, it was just a disaster in all directions, so, again -- while Frontier may have been one of the last straws, it also probably would have needed to pull some kind of amazing miracle to yank the franchise out of that rut.

Now, keep in mind that the "Frontier killed the franchise" mantra mostly came from a fandom from 10-15 years ago, when a lot of fans were probably teenagers who didn't know or think much about how anime or media mix franchises are produced, but unfortunately this fanbase does tend to have a lot of preconceived notions like those that a ton of people just…never bothered to reconsider even after they became adults and should know better. And to be fair, not everyone happens to know about the above franchise statistics, and some of them were only translated, let alone released, very recently. From my understanding, the Japanese fanbase seems to have less of a perception that Frontier was the sole perpetrator, if only because they have easier access to said statistics.

But, well, you know, as much as it sucks to think about, a lot of people in this fanbase love to be rude to Frontier, so the idea of it as a "franchise killer" conveniently suits that angle, especially because Tamers also has a tendency to get put on a sacred cow's worship pedestal (and a lot of Tamers fans wouldn't dare admit that Tamers was just as big of a part of the problem, at least in terms of financial performance). So Frontier's an easy scapegoat. It's the weird series with no partner system! (Insert any complaint anyone has about Frontier's writing.) Clearly that must have made it able to singlehandedly tank the franchise in one fell swoop, and the Digimon franchise would have totally still been a profitable behemoth if they hadn't made it! Right? Yeah, uh, no. That's not how it works!

Now, as for the question of whether Frontier would have been successful if it'd come out under much better circumstances...well, of course, we'll never know. Media mix franchises have so many parts that the answer could probably honestly be anything. But to end this post on a happier note, the Japanese Frontier fan I spoke with went to DigiFes and wrote about the experience. They were worried about whether this year’s DigiFes would be popular when it was mostly about a movie with very little info and an anime series that hadn't had much in 20 years, only to have their fears completely blown away with how absolutely wild and feral the crowd went at everything, especially Miyazaki's performance of The Last Element. Which also led to their conclusion: Frontier has been getting so much love this year because, quite simply, it has a lot of fans who love it. That much is undeniably true, no matter what.

One of Shionne's guns, included in the free Special Training Grounds DLC, released back in October 2021, along with other weapons for the whole party, that can all be unlocked by overcoming group battle challenges in Viscint's Training Grounds. This particular gun is intended to mesh well with her Girls' School Uniform costumes, but can naturally be used with any other costume and does not require the paid School Life DLC. The in-game description goes as follows:

SR-876 A sniper rifle fine-tuned by Shionne herself. When disassembled, the whole thing can be concealed inside a book bag with little effort.

Design-wise, the SR-876 seems to draw inspiration from the Heckler and Koch G36 (HKG36 for short), probably in its HKG36V variant (sometimes called HKG36E), with its simpler optic compared to the G36 :

Notice the optic system that can double as carrier handle on top, as well as the "hollowed" look of the buttstock, with its big holes. Zooming in where the receiver meets the stock even reveals a little semicircle-shaped button with ridges.

On the G36's, it allows the wielder to fold the stock over, as demonstrated below:

Still, the SR-876 is also differs from the HKG36 with its noticeably elongated barrel and lack of gun grip. These changes were operated most likely to both be consistent with the size of her other guns, as well as to avoid any clipping issues (hence no gun grip). Also of note, the SR-876 is referred to as a sniper rifle (the only gun of Shionne's to be called a sniper rifle at all, if I'm not mistaken!), despite the G36 being an assault rifle. As such, it seems SR-876 is meant to be a "sniperized" HKG36 (with an optic that I'm not sure is appropriate for sniping, but what do I know)

The description mentions that it can be dismantled and that seems somewhat consistent with the G36 as it does seem pretty easy to pick apart, and is a modular gun as well (although the longer barrel miight be problem but maybe Shionne has a couple tricks up her sleeve that we just don't know about). The "fine-tuned" part however does clash with the G36, given that it is a standard issue in many armies and police forces across the globe. You'll find this bastard everywhere, really. But I guess it is a modular gun, so customization is possible so maybe that's what the "fine-tuned" part is in reference to (looks like she got a solid black magazine instead of the standard clear??)???? And I guess the gun she has is different from its irl counterpart. Is that what we're supposed to take from this? That she turned an HKG36 into a weird sniper herself? That she sawed off the grip??? dont do that???? ......? Anyway.

With its 4 different shades of green and vibrant brown, this pattern might be intended for use during woodland operations, but the somewhat faded quality of the greens might make it a good pick for semi-arid biomes as well.

As for the name, in all likelihood the 'SR' part stands for Sniper Rifle (unless it's Sexy Renan, ofc). 876 is a goroawase pun on Banamu which sounds close enough to Ban'namu which in turn is often used as short for Bandai Namco. This is likely a replacement for the late 765 goroawase that stood for 'Namco' and appeared in several of their games over the years. (You might have encountered 876 as well in another Bamco IP, Idol Master, which sometimes features a talent agency by the name of 876Production) To be fair, one could also argue that the SR-876 also bears a resemblance to Beretta's SC70/90. Which is true but I think it looks like the G36 more. With that being said, if any of you gun enthusiasts have any remarks or know of any real-life gun that's an even better fit, lemme know! Also if anyone has info or comments on the camo pattern I'm interested because '?????'

Danganronpa: Characterization and Evolution across Perceptions and Interpretation.

Okay, so basically, this was supposed to be a reblog of a discussion of characters, but I felt the need to give my piece of mind. For context, view this one,

Since I’m in a talking, since everyone is giving their opinions on everything, why not join?

Fair warning though... this is gonna be long. Hope you have some pop-corn.

I’m not going to add anything about the ambiguous characters because everything was said... except for Junko and Mukuro.

I think I need to remind everyone that while all of those points about Junko and Mukuro are valid... every character is supposed to be a parody of certain stereotypes of characters. The average goody-two shoes protagonist, the violent brute with a moral code, the honorable warrior, the arrogant rich boy, the mysterious girl, the fat otaku, the manipulaitve lolita, ect.

And for Junko and Mukuro? Those are supposed to be the Ultimate Bad Guy and Lackey, respectively. People who parodies evil bad lords in fiction and those who mindlessly support them.

Now, that doersn’t mean that excuse what they’ve done, quite the opposite. Just knowing that those you hate parodies of stereotypes doesn’t mean you have to like or dislike them. Those who hate Junko and Mukuro has very good reasons to do so.  You can find a person entertaining (Celes), interesting (Monaca), have soft spot for them (Hiyoko and her backstory), BUT! Ultimately, the choice of liking or disliking them is up to you.

I’m simply saying that, all characters have various level of depthsdepths, depending of the support they appeared in as. For instance, in my opinion, Toko Fukawa is not that great of a character in Trigger Happy Havoc, despite her having the niche of a double personality and being a survivor. But her time in Ultra Despair Girls (her bonding with Komaru and her evolution alongside Syo) really managed to elevate her as one of the best characters. (And God knows she needed it).

The thing is, there’s a lot of factors that needs to be taken account. A visual novel game and a novel has a lot more time to developp some characters than an anime or a manga. Which is why the formers are overall considered as better than the latters. But it also depends of the context same support has. Hope vs Despair, Truth vs Lies, Present vs Future, Killing vs Saving, Talk vs Action, ect.

Aaaand it also depends on the author, who might like or dislike some characters and thus decides to either not give them that much material or backstory compared to others, or get rid of them first. Looking at Sayaka and Leon who were the first one that Kodaka designed, and were among the first victims because he was sick of seeing them.

Ouch. Way to please those who liked them.

An author is not perfect, as you can see. An author is, last time I checked, human. And every decision they make impacts their support no matter what they do. As a result, some characters ends up having the short end of the stick... or no stick at all. Looking at Bandai who barely got any character at all.

And let’s not forget that Koda isn’t the only scenarist in the DR Team. Just look at DR3, Killer Killer, the novel Togami, the visual novel Kirigiri Sou... yeah, sometimes, they make very, VERY questionnable tropes No spoilers, but look at the official wikias... you’re in for a doozy.

But nonetheless, it inspires others to make their own stories with their own goals in mind... and thus, they are bound not just to make the same mistakes, but to make their own.

FINALLY, we’re talking about LINUJ and his storytelling skills.

Now, I will say, LINUJ was able to use canon and make his story fit very well with the lore. Class 79 escaping the school, showing the Tragedy and its effects. The Ultimate Despair’s influence, who aren’t brainwashed this time around (even though in a realistic way, I do think that the brainwashing could have been good if it wasn’t the ONLY reason Junko gained her lackeys). The Divine Luck theme, which I believe is an interesting take considering luck has always been a stample of the story. Not to mention, the murders. Jesus, say whatever you want, but at least LINUJ knows how to surpass DR when it comes to gore.

Now, for the negative traits. To me, some characters are just... level DR3 when it comes to development. not kidding, Kizuna could have been interesting to work with despite her attitude. She could have been a Ruruka better developped. But no, that didn’t happen. Same thing for Nikei, who turns ourt to be just a manipulative bastard with an inferiority complex.

And the whole thing about Kanade. @a-student-out-of-time already explained why her being who she ended up was shitty, so let’s not beat what would be, at this point, a dead horse.

As well as some murders not being necessary. Poor Kanata deserved better, MUCH better than what she got. All because LINUJ wanted to copy the formula.

See what I mean? Everyone has a different approach with a different cast of characters. For me, I would never be able to write a killing game, because it would mean I would never make anyone suffer death by murder, even though I dislike some.

Like Haiji, Mitch, Kyosuke, Juzo, Ruruka, Kanade, Hiyoko, Byakuya, Kaito (the Japanese version), Kokichi (the American version), and so many others.

The one who can choose whatever you think of someone is yourself And if you’re an artist like a writer or on koihatsu... well, you can use your skills to show the portrait you’ve made of this character.

Whenever this portrait is good or bad is another debate entirely,.

Now, I know I’ve been on a long-ass tangent now, but let’s talk about my personal opinion on certain characters.

Makoto Naegi, for instance, is my favorite protagonist, if not my favorite character. Because he’s kind, understanding, and most of all, he didn’t give up in adversity. He’s someone I can relate to because of those traits and more. Not to mention, he can be shipped with many, MANY people because of his traits. That’s why people like myself or my good friend wesst1 on fanfiction, @vergilsama922 and @pyropsychiccollector works on either fanfictions, or in the latters case, an entire AU, with him paired with a MASSIVE amount of girls.

Right. But with all of this said, I have to admit... he’s not the best protagonist in the franchise.

That title would belong to Hajime Hinata. Because he, in my opinion, is much more developped that Makoto. A talentless guy who craved to have something to be proud of, and being pressured by his inferiority complex to join a project dehumanizing him to make him represent something toxic... only to be used to represent the opposite. This, and many other factors, help him rise to the top.

At the opposite side of the spectrum... Kyosuke Munakata and Juzo Sakakura.

Those two were preszented as people who wanted to get rid of the corruption at HPA... and decided to kill all despairs during the Tragedy. In itself, Kyosuke especially, pose a potential good foil to Makoto, as he seems more realistic, and thinks that sometimes, in order to save people, you need to take another life. Which in itself is pretty messed up, but in a world when the people have no problem killing anyone, is not that morally grey and sometimes necessary in this context. Legitimate defense and such, even with brainwashing in play.

My problem with those is that, for the latter... well, he chose to save his own secret over the lives of billions. Even though he swore to help Kyosuke... and he lashes out at anyone because of it, specifically, the one who stopped Junko in the first place. Not to mention, what he did with Hajime.

And Kyosuke, well... we don’t see him kill Despairs because it was necessary. We see him killing his comrades. Yes, he was manipulated into hating the Despairs, and Chisa’s death set him ablaze... but his disregard of Makoto and co’s trauma due to the killing game and his inability to understand hope and despair (who are at the core human emotions), makes me question: what did he really want for Hope’s Peak Academy? Did he really wanted the good for everyone, or did he just wanted to sit on the headmaster’s chair, like he said in DR3 Despair?

"For the sin of laying a hand on my school, you will pay the price."

That... that is pretty arrogant in my opinion. And with all of that, wesst1 and I took it into account, and decided to make those two bad guys.

Those two can be good allies, like @a-student-out-of-time is most likely gonna do. It’s a matter of approach.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes, and everyone is going to use a character differently from another writer.

The most important thing, for me... is to manage to use those traits, to help build up a good story.

...I think I said everything I needed to say for now. But perhaps you want to hear my opinion on other matters regarding Danganronpa?

But as said in the previous fiscal report, Trigger and Decker were kind of "one-off" wonders as they're building off the hype of their previously very famous predecessors. Which isnt a very sustainable model (tho I would've preferred they at least finished off with New Gen Gaia) and they'll have to be able to come up with something new going forward

So a more accurate and fair comparison would be to compare Z and Blazar, which is a major success if you put it in this perspective

BANDAI ANNOUNCES GODZILLA VS KONG FIGURES!!!

Finally found some photos of Bandai’s SHMonsterarts figures of Godzilla and Kong from the upcoming film Godzilla vs Kong.

I had to look at that picture twice to see the joints and realize this was an artful recreation of “the punch” from the film trailer.

Godzilla is supposed to be an all-new sculpt, with a metallic paint job on his spines to simulate the glow before he unleashes his atomic breathe.

Godzilla looks leaner and meaner in these pics which I like.  He actually looked chubby in Godzilla King of the Monsters; not a good look for any kaju monarch.

I also like that, at least in profile, his head resembles his Japanese counter-part.

A very nice figure.  He will definitely be joining my stable of Godzilla figures.

Kong (for copyright purposes, Legendary/Warner Bros can’t call him King Kong) is shown here with the axe we see him wielding in the trailer.

Some people have stated that the head of the axe looks like one of Godzilla’s back spines.  The fact that it appears to be able to absorb and/or reflect Godzilla’s atomic breath leads that theory a little credence, at least in my tiny little brain.  I’ve also seen it theorized that the Godzilla we see attacking and rampaging in the trailer is really Mechagodzilla in disguise(hearkening back to Mecha G’s first appearance way back in 1974′s Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla).  That theory might also jibe with a Mechagodzilla toy from Playmates being seen on display at a toy fair in Asia last year.

Well, in less than two months I guess we’ll find out.

I’m really loving the Kong figure.  This is the first time Bandai has done a Kong Figure in over 15 years, and that was for the 2005 remake of King Kong (a figure that routinely fetches around $200.00 in price when you find one for sale). Both Mezco and New have released King Kong figures in the last couple of years, based on his original 1933 appearance (both of which are great BTW), but it’s good to have one specifically scaled to battle a Godzilla figure.

Both Godzilla and Kong are set to be released in the USA in June 2021with a suggested retail price of $68.00 a piece.  I am completely underwhelmed by the Playmates figures, but I’m super-hyped for these guys!!!

Now all that’s left is the hope that the film doesn’t stink.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on ryou? We know that he and Ken were friends, and that his partner was milleniummon, and in the Tamers universe he was seen as particularly skilled in the card game, but I was wondering if you had anything to add or anything that stood out about him to you in particular?

This is the part where I unfortunately have to admit that it’s kind of hard to have a particularly deep analysis of Ryou when even the staff itself wasn’t entirely sure what to do with him. Ryou’s “character” as we know it was not actually fully fleshed out until Tamers, having been majorly impacted by his voice actor’s personality -- he’d originally been planned for the 02 summer movie (what eventually became Hurricane Touchdown, with Wallace instead), and Seki even fully admitted that he might have had a completely different personality and story if that plan had actually gone through. The V-Tamer crossover with Ryou has a completely different take on him, depicting him as a hot-blooded shounen hero prone to getting in fights with Taichi. In fact, even Kakudou himself seemed to have absolutely no idea that the Tamers Ryou and the 02 Ryou were supposed to be the same person, so the tie-in aspect of 02 seems to have been poorly coordinated. (To Toei’s credit, the WonderSwan games are a Bandai product line, and Bandai has...historically not been very cooperative about these things, so it’s possible that they were legitimately doing the best they could in such a situation.)

In addition, if you’ve ever actually played Tag Tamers or read its story, there’s actually a lot of canonical contradictions with what happens in 02:

Wormmon doesn’t call Ken “Ken-chan”, but just “Ken”, which contradicts their depiction in episode 23

Ken is referred to as a “genius” even before the events of the game, which also contradicts episode 23 stating that Osamu was the one recognized as a genius and Ken was feeling very left out as a result

Ken’s “encounter with a Digimon” is depicted as Ken and Ryou witnessing the Diablomon vs. Omegamon fight in Ken’s room, which contradicts Ryou’s appearance in Turkey in Our War Game!, the distinct depiction of Ken getting sucked into the Digital World alone in 02 episode 23, and Ken’s later statement in episode 33 that his “first encounter with a Digimon” was in August 2000 (Our War Game! was March)

If you want to take things outside the scope of the anime into account, the Adventure novels state that the “black ball” inserted into Gennai in Adventure episode 45 was a Dark Seed prototype, which doesn’t quite track with it being a Millenniummon body part as seen in Tag Tamers

In order to make this track, I personally have something I call “M03 status”, which I named after the fact that Hurricane Touchdown used to be the most infamously difficult to rationalize entry in Adventure canon (due to Wallace’s existence as a Chosen Child from 1995 posing a contradiction, the appearance of impossible evolutions, and its difficulty of placement in timeline, plus its own drama CD sequel not tracking with its ending). The idea behind it is basically “it’s still fair game that Daisuke and his friends met a boy named Wallace in the summer of 2002, and that something roughly resembling the events of M03 happened, but not in the exact way they were presented in the movie.” So M03′s canon...sort of.

Given that the events of Tag Tamers do have some pretty vital relevance to Ken’s backstory, I would say the same here -- as seen in the anime, Ken went on some kind of adventure with Ryou, and something kind of resembling what happened in the game happened, but not exactly in the way it was presented in the game. And, unfortunately, as a result of that...I have no idea what Ryou would actually be like in this version of events. Sorry...!

That said, the later WonderSwan games also have a plot point where Ryou eventually decides to jump universes, so it’s still possible for him to be the same one as the one in Tamers. At that point, though, he ends up having far more pertinence to Tamers than he does 02, so I’ll leave it there.

Isekai and Video Games

With how video games are an inherently multi-medial entity, it’s no wonder that a common trope of story telling is being transported into a game or having a character sent to another world. In Eastern animation and fiction this is called an “isekai” style of story.  “Isekai” means, literally, “different World” in Japanese and in urban slang is the name of that entire genre for anime, manga, movies, and lite novels. In Western Fiction, the term “portal fiction” is used instead but both describe very much the same phenomena. Within video games, there are many examples of portal fictions and isekai since games are from all over, though with my own personal library a lot are from Japan. There aren’t all that many differences between the Eastern and Western versions of these stories, therefore, by my definition portal fiction and isekai are very much interchangeable. However, in the interest of simplicity, I will hence forth just use “isekai” as it is one word. 

There are so many examples of this sort of story within the Eastern and Western traditions of stories, that I will mostly only be taking about how it is handled in regards to gaming. One of the more recent examples of an Isekai game that I’ve played is “Ni no Kuni 2.” Another that I’ve played is “Exist Archive,” and a third is “Brave Story.” Despite being from disparate companies and having different approaches to the genres and even having differing sources, they share a central thing in common: the one transported from the real world is a male from a world very much like ours through a sudden event either it being a directly harmful event or something that could have been harmful. 

The fact all three of these share a male protagonist, I suppose, shouldn’t be too much of a shock. With just a brief mental search of the Isekai anime and manga that I know of (and am fond of) almost all of them have males in the lead. Sword Art Online, The Boy and the Beast, That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime, and Konosuba. One of the only ones I can think of that is a quasi-Isekai that doesn’t have a male lead only doesn’t have one on a technicality and that was .hack//SIGN where (spoiler) Tsukasa was a girl offline the whole time. I’m not saying there aren’t any female led isekai adventures, as I count Spirited Away as an isekai and Chihiro is definitely a girl. Same could be said for The Cat Returns. My Neighbor Totoro is one that is kinda Isekai too. However, I will plead ignorance on other female isekai fictions in Eastern fiction, but I’d love to know more.

Something else the shared male protagonists have is they are from a modern setting. This is not mandatory but is very common as it is a grounding element. In this we have a deviation between the exact origins of the three transported characters. The protagonist of Exist Archive Kanta Kujo is a teenage boy. The player character (whose stand in name is Traveller) of Brave Story is an elementary student a lot like the character of Wataru from the book of the same name from which it was adapted. Roland from Ni no Kuni 2 is by far the most above average person to be in an isekai scenario as he was president of a whole country. Those other anime and fictions I mentioned before, the people from the world like ours is ordinarily an average person. 

Roland stands out a bit more than the others once it’s seen that while he is a major character, Ni no Kuni 2 is more about Evan and his kingdom than it is Roland’s adventures in that new world. Whereas with the other two games, the characters that are played as are the ones whom the story revolves around. Traveller differs from the other two in that he didn’t die to get to the other world called Vision whereas the other two died outright. Kanata in a sort of accident/domestic terrorist incident and Roland during an assassination attempt. 

Yet, despite those minor differences, the stories start in sort of the same way. The transported characters through a strange event end up headfirst in a new world and end up encountering some sort of guide—be it a person or mystical—that guides them as to what they need to do. This is usually immediately followed by battle, since that is the best way to fit the combat tutorial into a game. Beyond that the three stories go different ways, for the most part. Brave Story is a standard hero’s journey. Exist Archive is a hero’s journey mixed with a mystery of the world that Kanata and the others find themselves in after their deaths as well as the mystery behind the identity of Mayura Tsukishiro, the white haired girl with pigtails and no memories. Ni no Kuni 2 is more about Evan’s coming of age than anything else. 

In my experience playing these three games, these central conceits did help with introducing the worlds to me, and helped suspend my disbelief while playing and helped me get into the worlds and stories. The reason this works so well is most video games are designed to pull players into their worlds to begin with. To reference Jesper Juul’s Half-Real, it’s because the player is a piece to completing the puzzle. By making the story one that transports characters from a familiar setting to another is an easy way of getting players deeper into the game. This even works with games that are more in line with western portal fantasies, like Kingdom Hearts. The tutorial area might be a tropical island but its a lot like something we’ve seen before and the players are there long enough to get a feel for the Destiny Islands before the main story begins. Of course, what Kingdom Hearts has as an advantage over other isekai games I’ve mentioned is that the other worlds were mostly the worlds of well known films. Still, thanks to the half-real state of play, games are already sort of an isekai like experience in and of themselves to begin with.Therefore it’s a logical conclusion a lot of modern isekai style stories exist in games, and why a fair few iseakai fictions outside the realm of games tend to use video game logic. It’s already an adventure you go on, just taken a step further.

Haven’t been posting often as I used to, but man...where do we start? I’m sure you have went to the Anime Fest @ NYCC which was supposed to be a part of Anime Expo. At first I thought this side con was going to be the biggest, most awful, most tragic moment in convention history as a dud turned out to be a fair and balanced convention.  One of the highlights that caught my attention was the schoolyard (LMAO). The Schoolyard section turned out to be a joke, but I’m glad that it was no DashCon as many people occupied themselves on the fake grass. Plus, they had activities going on from playing group games to doing yoga.  The panels for Anime Fest NYC were really lacking. While some stood out, others didn’t gain enough for audience attention. One panel showing a screening for Goblin Slayer wasn’t moderated as the show was intended for mature audiences, there were minors at the panel. Why didn’t they check people’s ID for this? And second of all (I want to watch this since its good for the first episode) the screening was in the afternoon. Yeah, what a problem indeed. However, I know that Funimation had two panels and it did brought in crowds. It’s a saving grace for this con, but everything else was a hit or a miss. The Cosplay Meetups were a drag. Barely any cosplayer would show up, being the exception of My Hero Academia. Majority of cosplayers would be back at Javits. While here at Pier 94, it was a total drag and there was barely any cosplayer showing up for the meetups. I heard that some people had a hard time getting to this convention as its location was twenty blocks from the Javits Center (Pier 94). I read that one individual had to walk up from Javits just to get to Anime Fest whereas some people are mislead on information to board on a shuttle bus to get there too. I didn’t take the shuttle because I did not go to NYCC this year (I’ll give a reason). Can I tell you how funny it was that there was no service in the ATMs at Pier 94? At Javits, there’s a row of ATM’s where you can withdraw cash. Here, there’s barely any as there was only two machines that are completely out of service lol Artist Alley was still a great alley. However, a few people critique the alley as lacking compared to the Artists in NYCC. I wish that people should give these artists the respect that they deserve. These are the people that are fans that made these works and they put in time and effort on their masterpieces. I threw in money for at least three artists that stood out for me.  AnimeFest @ NYCC consists of 70% Anime content and 30% NYCC related content. The booths that you know of from VIZ, Kodansha, Funimation, Aniplex, Cruncyroll and other major names were all at Javits. Same goes for video game companies as Square Enix and Bandai Namco had demos for upcoming titles. It would be really nice that they should’ve made a mini booth for others to enjoy at Anime Fest. Too bad ReedPop did not thought of that sooner.  Despite all this, I had a fun time at AnimeFest over the weekend. While Cosplayers made the best effort on putting themselves out there, to the fun activities that are provided, this was a space that really needed improvement. I am sure that they’re taking their jealously over AnimeNYC, but hell, I am not paying $200 for four badges to be at New York Comic Con. Once you bring back three/four day badges, then we’ll talk.  AnimeNYC, here we come!

Amazing Ally’s Unreleased Playpacks?

90′s kids or 90′s enthusiasts will remember who this doll is:

Amazing Ally, released by Playmates Toys in 1999, became popular among children because of her high-tech accessories, abilities to interact with the player, and facial animatronics. Ally was able to recognize her accessories and outfits depending on which playpack was inserted into her cartridge slot. The doll itself came with the Let’s Play Tea Party playpack, although these expansion packs were available for her as well:

By the time the 00′s began, an upgraded version of Ally was released, this time with a different tea party outfit and a kitten:

Her “friend” doll, Amazing Maddie, was released with an arts and crafts playpack, along with one expansion pack focusing on world traveling:

In 2001, Bandai released Bilingual Doll Remmy, a Japan-exclusive Amazing Ally doll that focused on teaching English and Japanese. She has become quite obscure (minus one page on eBay that currently sells her), although I do own her and have uploaded videos of her on my YouTube channel, venusstarpower94. It is unknown if Remmy was ever given her own expansion packs: 

Sometime after Ally 2.0 and Maddie were released, Ally was later on given yet another upgrade, this time under the name Phone Chattin’ Ally. This doll was never released, and instead was remade and released in the mid-00′s as the more modern doll children of the time and doll collectors now know as Amazing Allysen:

Back to 1999 Ally, while Playmates did release 5 expansion packs to stores, there is a high possibility that Ally was intended to have more. Some Ally dolls currently owned by doll collectors have been known to mention an accessory or clothing item belonging to a certain playpack, even though the playpacks mentioned never existed. Some examples can be shown below, which are screenshots taken from my Instagram and YouTube:

ETA 9/9/18: 

As you can see, these three doll owners have Amazing Ally dolls with the unknown playpacks already programmed into them. It appears that Ally was supposed to have a rockstar, softball, and artist playpack. While the artist playpack was very likely changed to become Maddie’s arts and crafts playpack, what could have happened to the rockstar and softball playpacks? If these Ally dolls were already programmed to recognize them, why were they never released?

There was yet another possible prototype that never made it in stores. In a Toy Fair article from Washington Post in 1999, the year Ally was released, a pair of cowboy boots were mentioned as part of Ally’s accessories. This indicates that Ally could have also had a cowgirl-themed playpack prototype. A screenshot of the article can be seen here:

The question now is, where could those prototypes be, if they even exist? Playmates no longer produces the Amazing doll line, although there is still a possibility that Judy Shackelford, the inventor of all the Amazing dolls, could have information (or even the prototypes) of the playpacks. Voice actress Grey Delisle, who provided the voice for both Ally and Maddie, might also have memory of recording Ally’s script relating to these unreleased playpacks. (ETA: Delisle voicing the two dolls is not 100% confirmed yet, just highly speculated. I did just contact her asking if she remembers providing the voice for those two dolls, and I’m waiting for her reply). Remmy’s voice actress is unknown. 

Just as a disclaimer, if I find more information on these unreleased playpacks, edits to this posts will come. So far, we have no physical recording of any Amazing Ally doll mentioning the mystery playpacks. I tested my own Amazing Ally doll by inserting the wrong accessories into her connectors, and nothing was mentioned of playpacks that didn’t already exist. 

Nevertheless, as a huge doll fanatic, especially interactive dolls, I would love to get my hands on these prototype playpacks (again, if they even exist). For now, I guess you could consider this lost media? If anyone who worked for Playmates or were part of the Amazing doll line’s team could come forward and tell us about what hidden secrets Amazing Ally had, I and other doll collectors would highly appreciate it. 

ETA 9/4/17: The same friend who commented on Ally’s softball playpack also informed me that via the Wayback Machine, if I go to Playmates Toys’ website back in March of 2000, there is a page dedicated to Amazing Ally. One of the descriptions of Ally’s features really sparked my attention:

If you cannot read the text very well, it says that “a complex overlay of resistor technology allows Ally to verify multiple items for UP TO 50 PLAYSETS”. 50 playsets?! With only six (including the tea party set bundled with the doll) released to stores? I smell something fishy here...

The fact that the creators themselves confirmed Ally to have the capacity to recognize up to 50 of her own playsets further proves that there are more playsets than what were officially released to stores. Whether these playsets were already completed but never released or in the process of being created but just never got around to being finished still remains a mystery...

ETA 9/5/17: I found a newspaper article from St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Amazing Ally’s debut, from St. Louis, Missouri, on November 7, 1999. Keep in mind though, if you want to access this article, you’ll have to start their free trial and read the article there (unless you’re lucky enough to have free access to it from your school). Because I am not allowed to post the entire article due to copyright laws, I will only discuss a key point they made.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch states in the article that “the manufacturer has produced 15 playware sets for Amazing Ally. Each play set includes an outfit, play accessories, hair accessories, game and story cards, and are themed to specific adventures such as Cheerleader, Slumber Party, School, Ballerina and In-Line Skater”. Therefore, we now have confirmation that out of the 50 playsets planned for release, 15 were actually made. Out of the 15, only 6 were actually released.

Speaking of these already-made playsets, another article by Business Wire New York mentions some expansion packs for Ally that were never heard of before. The article covered the latest unveilings at the Toy Fair back in February 8, 1999. Again, because of copyright laws I cannot post the article itself here, but I will only discuss a key point they made. This article stated that the doll’s owner could have “many exciting virtual adventures like tea parties, being a princess, or playing veterinarian". Neither a princess nor a veterinarian playset were ever released.

So far, out of those 15 playpacks, 6 were released, leaving us with 8 unreleased. Out of those 8, we have been able to find 6: the rock star, softball, artist, cowgirl/Western, princess, and veterinarian ones.

ETA 9/7/17: Got some kinda-bad news... Playmates responded back but it looks like all hopes of getting a look at their prototypes (at least from them, anyway) is out the window. Here's what they said: " Hi Venus, Unfortunately, we do not have any information regarding prototypes of the Amazing Ally doll. With as many years that have passed, the people who created the doll within Playmates no longer work here. Any prototype ideas that do not surface as actual product are usually trashed. Sorry for no having more information to give you. Aubrie Fox Consumer Affairs Playmates Toys Inc. 310-252-8005 "

Soooo there’s that. Kinda sucks, but I’m still hopeful that one day somebody, whether it’s the team who produced Ally, Judy Shackelford herself, or the people who got to see Ally at the toy fair in 1999, will come forward and spill the tea. 

ETA 3/21/2020: We have video evidence of Amazing Ally mentioning an unreleased playpack! Thanks to my friend, IG @keaundrea_seay, we now have 7 out of 8 unreleased playpacks identified: a chef/cooking playpack.
