2023.

i hope any of you reading this will forgive the essay. i started posting to this art blog ten years ago in 2013 when i was just at the very end of high school, uploading short animations i'd made for one of my final projects, preparing myself for art school where i was gearing up to become an illustration/animation student.

i went into my art foundation course in 2014, still thinking i was going to be going into storybook illustration or with faint hopes of becoming like a concept artist for game/animation, although even then i'd started thinking about patterns...

and then in 2015 i did go into my BA, going in for that illustration with animation degree that... usually when i talk about it in real life, i say didn't really feel like the best place for me. if i think back, the best things i got out of it were two of my best friends, one of whom is now my partner. looking back on my BA era, there's some bits of sketchbook stuff...

and while i was at university my main fandoms were thunderbirds are go and x-men for a bit... these are from the end of 2015 into the beginning of 2016...

then for a little while i was doing this still sort of pastel-ish lineless situation:

and i alternated between that and this thin fineliner type work (pretty sure all of the linearted pieces were done on paper and scanned, and all the lineless were graphics-tablet-only) - it was in this style that i started to offer commissions for the first time too.

and i also had fineliner-lined work in sketchbooks that i coloured with marker and posca pens, the colours of which were generally a bit more intense just based on not being able to slide the hue/saturation around on paper:

also 2016 was when i discovered the spongebob musical just after it's trial run in chicago (which ended in july of 2016) and i started making fanart at that point... which would have the biggest effect on the way i drew (and i did end up handing in a piece of spongebob musical fanart as one of my art school homeworks lmao)

from summer 2016 until early 2017 things were still quite soft and pastelly in my digital art, colour-wise:

and then suddenly everything got whacked up to 100% on saturation. also i was using the binary tool to give everything really thin pixel lineart for some reason.

then i went on vacation in summer 2017 and didn't draw for maybe a month? just short of? and when i came back i decided to change everything up again... giving characters blobbier, more ugly-cute faces with large squinting eyes and big nostrils and i was worrying a lot less about making anything look smooth, lineart-wise. i turned off the pen stabiliser in SAI and let it wiggle.

then... the spongebob musical opened on broadway in late 2017, i went to see it live in person for the first time... and my whole brain was ENTIRELY consumed by my love of it. i was putting that david zinn inspired pattern explosion into everything, even if it wasn't sbm fanart.

as we go into 2018, i started colouring my lineart. my biggest interest was still broadway musicals (with spongebob at the top of the list)

i think summer 2017 - early 2018 is probably my favourite art era, i was at my most bright and colourful and exciting... although i know in my actual real life i was struggling a lot with my home situation and i had been for some time. art was definitely my escapism back then, and i think a lot of the time i drew really bright, joyful stuff to try and inject that feeling into myself.

as for my university work, i was putting my focus into 3D paper-mache puppets:

and i was also starting to do more repeat patterns, mostly inspired by things around me. i'd learned how to make patterns actually tile and repeat in 2017, so made a few during my time at uni just to accompany some of my projects, but never as the focus of them. one of my university tutors told me that maybe i should put more focus on doing surface pattern, and maybe applying it to textiles, but i said i wasn't interested.

i graduated from my BA in the summer of 2018, and immediately began volunteering at the whitworth art gallery doing anything i could - stewarding, helping with arts and crafts, dancing with families...

in 2019 i was still very colourful... i was trying out more chunky colouring on characters skintones that i think was def inspired by tumblr artist jadenvargen:

but the blobbyness and ugly-cute style of drawing faces was gone by here, and i think... the way i drew characters probably had better *anatomy*, proportions were maybe a bit more realistic...

in 2020 i started adding the black shading to under the chins and some other places on characters' bodies because i started watching the anime my hero academia with my brother, lmao (and i was starting to pastelise colours a bit again, these are the most pastel-ish examples) my lineart has really smoothed back out too, though i never turned my pen stabiliser back on in SAI. i think my hand just adjusted. probably seems a bit insane to miss that, but i do.

by the end of 2020, the almost-year of lockdown over cobid had... made me a bit insane, i think, and i moved out of my mother's house and into a flat with a friend from university.

in 2021 i think things were much the same... i think from this point on is where things have sort of settled. i don't want to say stagnated, but i do think things have been very... like this for a while.

2022 - got the most exciting examples out...

also i was very into these little frames in 2022.

and then on to 2023! in 2022, i did begin trying to shift gears a bit -- hoping to put more energy into sewing and making products (like my tutor has suggested back in uni, even though i'd really resisted the idea.) i sold at a few in-person markets during winter of 2022, but got disheartened by the amount of money i had to sink in up front to sign up for a spot...

which has made me VERY grateful for the people who have supported me via online sales. it has really helped me stay afloat in 2023 - AND it has felt more wonderful than i can describe that there have been people interested in my work... especially when a lot of it has been my original designs, rather than the fanart that i expect a lot of people initially followed me for.

i've also... in the past 2 years... branched out a bit more when it comes to 'being an artist' - and have had the opportunity to deliver arts & crafts workshops with local refugee & asylum seeker support charity, afrocats. it's taken me to their home base in a church to hotels across the city where asylum seekers were temporarily placed while waiting on their new homes, and of course to my beloved whitworth art gallery, where we welcomed visitors from all backgrounds: from the typical white middle class visitors the gallery usually expects, to all the refugee visitors coming into the space for the first time.

and through my volunteering at the whitworth, i showed up so often they decided they might as well pay me. so i've also become a facilitator of... creative play sessions, my favourites of which have been outdoors. monthly, year-round, we have 'outdoor art club', where i get to paint with mud and make potions from leaves with kids & families - here you can see me tell you a little bit about it in this video below with 'crempog' a puppet character that makes videos about activities for kids and families around manchester (my bit starts at 01:10 although i am in the intro and thumbnail haha)

and then of course the summer 'PLAYTIME' activities we've had the past two years: scrap studio in 2022, and play market in 2023. it's the best freelance gig ever -- just to hang out and encourage families to be creative and have fun.

in working more in these new avenues... outside of being - as i've called myself for a long time - "an internet artist"... i've found myself more interested in this sort of thing. in being a "real world artist" too. in doing surface pattern design, and being a workshop facilitator, i find myself wanting to put more energy into these sorts of projects.

in 2023 i've also dabbled a little bit more in youtube videos! i have had a channel for a while and have made videos in previous years, but 2023 has been the year i've done the most in. admittedly most of them haven't been about my art, and more just like... random things that interest me (the spongebob musical in particular) but i've really been enjoying video editing. that's kind of an art form too, so i'm including it here!

moving forward, want to keep putting even more of my energy into other things. my shop, with a bigger range of products to offer. workshops in real life, where i can make a difference.

as for my art blog... i feel like i've done the least drawing in many years in 2023, and... well, things have been weird and complicated for a bit in my real life. i hope to draw for fun a bit more again very soon, and to return to doing things in more of a wild and crazy way, to be more creative and exciting with the way i draw things. still, here's some of my favourites from 2023:

THE UNOFFICIAL ST. LOUIS BLUES PRIMER PART THREE: GOALIES + MORE

JORDAN BINNINGTON (Binner)

Info: #50, STL 2011

Last season: 3.31 GAA + .894 SV%

History: Played his first ever NHL game in an emergency role in the 15-16 season, then developed in the minors until the fateful 18-19 season where he was the backup to Jake Allen. Through the season, he proved that he could by the #1 goalie for the team and started each of the Blues' 26 playoff games. He became the regular Blues starting goalie, though he would split starts with Ville Husso in the 21-22 season, and then start 61 of 82 games in the 22-23 season (sorry to Griess, he was not very good). The 23-24 season has been a bit of a redemption season for him after posting his worst ever numbers last year and also being notably rowdier than usual.

Profile: Look. He's a good goalie. He's a GREAT goalie when he has a reliable backup, which he definitely does this season. He's never been able to replicate the level he was on in the 18-19 season, but he's still proven time and again that he is a good goalie. On a more technical level, he has a tendency to over-commit to one shot or angle and leave the back door wide open, which isn't great on a team with an unreliable defense. My dad says he sometimes "flops around like a fish" so take that as you will.

Other: Grew up playing with current Thunderbirds goalie Malcolm Subban! Also he got married summer of 2023 and a lot of the younger guys from the 18-19 season, several of which haven't played on the Blues in a few years, were there :) it was sweet :)

JOEL HOFER (Hof) (?)

Info: #30, STL 2018

Last season: 2.50 GAA + .921 SV% (AHL)

History: ROOKIE GOALIE !!!! He played 6 games last year after Binnington's suspension, and proved himself so well that the Blues had three goalies on their roster for an extra week or so. In the AHL he's averaged about a .910 SV% and he actually scored a goal in the 2022 Calder Cup playoffs !! He has one more year on his two-year one-way contract, but if he keeps playing the way he is, he'll probably be sticking around for a while longer! He's definitely still adjusting to the NHL but he's only been improving

Other: Lives with Jake Neighbours! Their friendship is very cute, definitely watch for them in the headbutt line after wins :) My mom says he looks very polite

MACKENZIE MACHEACHERN

Nearly 30 and has played 123 NHL games. Played for the Hurricanes organization last year but returned to the Thunderbirds for the 23-24 season. Reliable callup if someone is injured.

HUGH MCGING

Info: #56, LW, STL 2018

Literally the funniest name in the world, and he's on a team with Mackenzie Maceachern. Made his NHL debut last season and played a handful of games this season and has yet to score a point, but seems solid on the Thunderbirds!

JAKUB VRANA

Info: #15, LW, WSH 2014

Won the cup with the Capitals in 2018, came to the Blues at the 2023 trade deadline and had a fantastic 10 goals and 14 points in just 20 games. He came back for the 23-24 season, made the team, and then did not play up to potential. Was a regular healthy scratch for about half of the games in the first half of the season, and then got sent to Springfield. Has spent non-insignificant amounts of time in the AHL in the last several seasons

MATTHEW KESSEL

Info: #51, RD, STL 2020

Currently in the Blues lineup as players deal with injuries! Has played 8 NHL games between this season and last season and has yet to score a point, but has been very good on the Thunderbirds!! Solid young right-shot defenseman with offensive ability :)

ADAM GAUDETTE

Info: #88, C, VAN 2015

Technically a prospect despite having played 218 NHL games between the Canucks, Blackhawks, and Senators. Came to the Blues at the 2023 trade deadline in the O'Reilly and Acciari trade after spending the season playing for the Toronto Marlies. He already has 23 goals + 35 points in just 35 games with the Thunderbirds, was AHL player of the month in Oct 2023, and was just recently named to the AHL All Star Game! Currently leads the entire AHL in goals

"1. Your first OC ever?"

I don't think I could remember my very first, but I could definitely describe an early one. When I was younger I used to play a sh#t-ton of Animal Jam, like I hardcore loved that game to shreds, one of my favorite things to do in-game besides relaxing in an empty server was roleplaying in Sarepia Forest- But I didn't do Warrior Cats or wolves or whatever, I roleplayed as weird sh#t like ghosts/shadow people, mutated abominations, creatures that disguised themselves as normal animals, steampunk men, robots, etc. (Funny how I haven't changed, huh?) Anyways, one of these characters was an arctic wolf that was pitch black and had red eyes, and had a tuxedo and a fancy top hat..of course he was a wolf, visually, but I liked to imagine him as a very tall (maybe 10 feet?) scary Victorian ghostguy with sharp teeth, he would hide in obscured areas like under bushes and would watch and wait for other peoples characters to come by to snatch them and drag them into the shadows to be killed and even eaten. I think I remember him even being able to shapeshift and using that ability to lure others to their deaths. One of his forms was a rabbit. Over the years he was slowly forgotten, but now he is back in my mind and now I am FLABBERGASTED at how similar to how many of my current OCs he is. Pretty much every circus OC I have lmao, with maybe like…3 exceptions. But we aren't here to focus on those guys we're here to focus on a happy lil guy…and todays happy lil guy is….drum roll……..Victor! So unpredictable right. Just look at my pfp. Look at that stupid face. Excited kitten vibes. He used to be quite shy and reserved but he had a moment in his life where he realized it was okay to be himself as long as it wasn't hurting himself or anyone. He started getting into entertainment business in the 1800's and it went from there, he loves people and loves when people are having fun!!! He loves his wife!! And kids!! He is so full of love!!!!!!!!!

Parts of stories inspired by songs? A couple. But conjured up entirely from a song? Just one. Funnily enough it was Isaac lmao, this was sometime during 2019 and I was vibing to music and Had An Idea. And of all songs it was this lol: https://youtu.be/e2qG5uwDCW4

His story was originally a love story (so glad this changed), but I couldn't draw him and forgot about him over the course of like..2 years until his concept randomly came back to me in late 2021-something during the early days of Modernparanormal. Back then he still had the prisoner backstory, but it wasn't nearly as fleshed out as it is now. Thunderbird wasn't even involved with Isaac in any way, he was just Katt's sh#tty incubus (iirc, at the time. He's a different thing now) landlord XD (also glad this changed). Isaac lived in a mansion with Gabriel and Vincent (who also had a love story background at the time, blegh), Vincent was a melancholic hopeless romantic, Gabriel was..very very sad, and Isaac was the chaotic one. Over time their stories became separated and changed, and now Isaac is calm, Gabriel is happy, and Vincent is chaotic as f#ck. Isaac went through many design changes over the years, and I may cover them eventually since they've all got their weird little ups and downs, and it'd be interesting to focus on how it evolved, what traits I kept or changed or completely removed and whatnot. Joe Mauldin, Jerry Allison And Buddy Holly On Their New Motorcycles 

Today is the day the music died.

Buddy, Waylon & The Ariel Cyclone

February 3, 1959 — The Day the Music Died. 

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson, and their pilot, Roger Peterson, die in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. Holly leaves behind millions of adoring fans, a pregnant wife and a legendary 1958 Ariel Cyclone Motorcycle.

May 13, 1958 - Buddy Holly and his Crickets bandmates, Joe Mauldin and Jerry Allison, land in Dallas after a world tour. They go straight to a Harley-Davidson dealership looking to buy three Harley 74 flatheads. The salesman is skeptical that the three young men from West Texas have the wherewithal to purchase three of his expensive motorcycles, and tells them so. Put off by the rude salesman, the boys go across town to Miller’s Triumph Shop. This time, Buddy introduces himself and produces a large amount of cash to ensure that it is known they are serious buyers. It is probably not necessary because Betty Miller, co-owner of the Shop with her husband, Ray, recognizes Buddy and the Crickets the moment they come in.

Mauldin picks out a red Triumph Thunderbird. Allison goes for a Triumph Trophy TR6A. Buddy buys the new 650cc Ariel Cyclone — one of only 200 ever made.

That summer, between tours and television appearances, Buddy and his friends are often seen riding their motorcycles around town in Lubbock.

October 1958 — Buddy Holly splits from The Crickets.

Early 1959 — Buddy Holly is touring the Midwest with his new band, including bassist Waylon Jennings. Also on the tour are rising artists Ritchie Valens and “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson. The going is rough aboard cold, uncomfortable buses and, frustrated by the conditions, Holly charters a plane from a performance in Clear Lake, Iowa to the next stop in Moorhead, Minnesota. Holly bandmate Tommy Allsup and Valens toss a coin for a seat on the plane — Valens wins. Waylon surrenders his seat to Richardson, who is sick.

Buddy Holly & Waylon Jennings February 3, 1959, 12:30 am — Holly, Richardson and Valens take off with Peterson, their 21-year-old pilot. The rest is history. Buddy Holly was 22 years old when he died. Richardson was 28. Valens was 17. Waylon lives on to be one of the most legendary country music artists of all time.

Buddy’s father keeps his Ariel Cyclone until 1970 when he trades it to Nub Stovall, a local racer, for two Yamaha 55cc Trailmasters. Stovall sells the Ariel to another individual, who tries to resell it to a local Honda dealer, George McMahan, for $1000. McMahan wants the bike, but does not have the funds.

Waylon Receiving His Birthday Present 1979 — Former Crickets Mauldin and Allison want to do something special for the 42nd birthday of their old friend, Waylon Jennings. They track down Buddy’s motorcycle to the man who still owns it in Austin, Texas. They buy the bike and have it delivered to an empty hotel room in North Texas where Waylon is on tour. Upon seeing his gift — at midnight — the outlaw Waylon jumps on the bike and kick starts it right there in the hotel room, to the delight of the other guests. Waylon only rides the Ariel a couple times and then lends it to the Johnny Cash Museum in Nashville.

2002 — Waylon Jennings passes away.2014 — The Ariel is auctioned off as part of Waylon’s estate. George McMahon has his second shot at owning the legendary bike. (McMahan had done well as a land developer in Lubbock and now had the means to buy the Ariel.) At auction, the bike quickly is bid up to $475,000 and McMahan bows out, fearing he has missed his chance again.

But fate is with McMahan. The Ariel does not reach the seller’s minimum and does not sell at the auction. Jessi Coulter, Waylon’s widow, is taking offers based on price AND intended use. McMahan makes his offer and specifies his use — riding the bike just one time and then loaning it to he Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock. Done deal.

This is the incredible story of a legendary 1958 Ariel Cyclone, owned by two of the biggest legends in music history. Check it out at the Buddy Holly Center if you’re ever down in Lubbock — but note, no pictures allowed.

American musician and bassist Dusty Hill of ZZ Top died age 72. In 1968, he and the drummer Frank Beard joined the guitarist Billy Gibbons in ZZ Top. They went on to release 15 studio albums and sold an estimated 50 million records worldwide including the bestselling Eliminator (1983), which featured two Top-40 singles 'Gimme All Your Lovin'' and 'Legs'.

2014 - Linda Ronstadt

Linda Ronstadt was honored with a National Medal of Arts at the White House in Washington, D.C. The honor was a particularly special moment for Ronstadt, who didn't make it to her induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in April of this year), since Parkinson's disease limited her ability to travel. The singer was brought into the East Room by wheelchair, but she walked onto the stage to receive her award.

2014 - Tom Petty

Reprise Records released Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' thirteenth studio album, Hypnotic Eye. The album debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album to ever top the chart.

2011 - Meat Loaf

63-year-old singer Meat Loaf, passed out onstage at Pittsburgh's Trib Amphitheater during an apparent asthma attack. After about ten minutes he regained his composure and finished the show.

1969 - Electric Guitars

Police in Moscow reported that thousands of public phone booths had been vandalised after thieves were stealing parts of the phones to convert their acoustic guitars to electric. A feature in a Russian youth magazine had shown details on how to do this.

1966 - Chris Farlowe

Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the Mick Jagger and Keith Richards song 'Out Of Time'. The song was first released on the Stones 1966 album Aftermath (UK version).

1964 - The Beatles

On their second visit to Sweden, The Beatles played two shows at an ice hockey arena, the Johanneshovs Isstadion, Stockholm. During the first show, both Paul McCartney and John Lennon received mild electrical shocks from ungrounded microphones. Supporting acts included The Kays, The Moonlighters, and The Streaplers.

1960 - Roy Orbison

Roy Orbison entered the UK chart with 'Only The Lonely', which went on to give Roy his first of three UK chart toppers. As an operatic rock ballad, it was a sound unheard of at the time, and is seen as a seminal event in the evolution of Rock and Roll. Released as a 45rpm single by Monument Records in May, 1960, 'Only The Lonely' went to No. 2 on the United States. The song was turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley, so Orbison decided to record the song himself.

1956 - Gene Vincent

Gene Vincent made his first appearance on national TV in the US on The Perry Como Show. Vincent had released ‘Woman Love’ the previous month, but it was the B-side, ‘Be-Bop-A-Lula,’ that eventually made the top 10. The song had been purchased from a fellow hospital patient when Vincent was recovering from leg injuries. A demo of the song made its way to Capitol Records as part of an Elvis sound-alike contest and a re-recorded version gave Vincent a hit.

Girls probably shouldn't walk home alone at night unless they're chador-wearing vampires who ride skateboards. That seems to be the major point made by Ana Lily Amirpour's A Girl Walks Home at Night. The Girl (Sheila Vand) has no name that we know of, and she doesn't seem to go out in the daytime, but we learn that she's a vampire when she bites off the finger of and then desanguinates Saeed (Dominic Rains), a sleaze, a pusher, and a pimp. Saeed has earlier confiscated a 1957 Ford Thunderbird from Arash (Arash Marandi) as payment for debts he incurred trying to support his junkie father, Hossein (Marshall Manesh). Arash's attempt to retrieve his car brings him into contact with the Girl. What little suspense the film generates lies in how the relationship between Arash and the Girl will progress. Will he become her victim, as Saeed, a homeless man, and eventually Arash's father do? Or will they find some other way of connecting? More droll than scary, A Girl Walks Home at Night takes place in Iran's imaginary Bad City, which seems a lot like Southern California except that everyone speaks Persian and it's more thinly populated. We meet some other characters in the course of the film, including a streetwalker and an urchin, but the most memorable is probably the cat Arash adopts, which eventually winds up with the Girl, to Arash's surprise. Almost everything about this film, Amirpour's first feature, defies summary, except to note that it's extraordinarily original, confidently conceived and directed, sometimes very funny, and its black-and-white cinematography is often quite beautiful.

Wheeling Nailers Open Playoffs Friday Against Fuel

The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced their schedule for the Central Division Semifinal Round of the 2024 Kelly Cup Playoffs. The Nailers will face the Indy Fuel in a best-of-seven series, which begins on Friday night at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. This is Wheeling's second trip to the postseason in the last three years, as the Nailers posted a 38-28-4-1 record, good for 81 points. It is the first time that Wheeling has earned at least 80 points in a season since 2015-16, when the team reached the Kelly Cup Final. The Nailers rode a three-game winning streak and five-game point streak to their third place position in the Central Division, and officially punched their ticket with a 6-0 win over Cincinnati on Saturday night. The opposition for round one is the second place Indy Fuel, who finished with a 39-25-6-2 record, good for 86 points. This is Indy's second straight trip to the playoffs and third in the last four years. There is plenty of familiarity for these two division rivals, as the 11 head-to-head meetings during the 2023-24 regular season were the most for Wheeling against any opponent. Indy got the upper hand 8-3 in the season series, which saw three overtime clashes and three additional games decided by one goal. The Nailers collected two of their three victories at WesBanco Arena, while the Fuel held serve by winning five of six tilts at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. The top points producer in the season series was Indy's Bryan Lemos, who had 15 points. His teammate, Kyle Maksimovich, was the leading goal scorer with seven. Wheeling was led by Jordan Frasca, who racked up 11 points, despite missing three games in the set. Mitchell Weeks of the Fuel had the most success between the pipes, as he went 5-1-1 in seven starts, while Taylor Gauthier was responsible for two of the three wins by the Nailers. This will be the first ever playoff series between Wheeling and Indy. The Nailers began play in 1992 as the Thunderbirds, when the team relocated from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This is Wheeling's 16th postseason appearance in 32 seasons. The Fuel joined the ECHL in 2014 to continue a long tradition of hockey in Indianapolis. This is the fourth time that the Kelly Cup Playoffs will feature Indy in ten seasons. Once the series begins, the Nailers will have played in at least one playoff series against every current Central Division club except for Iowa. The 2024 Central Division Semifinal Series between the Wheeling Nailers and Indy Fuel will begin at Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Friday and Saturday. The series will then shift to WesBanco Arena for games three and four on April 22nd and 23rd. If a fifth game is necessary, that game will be played on April 27th at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, Pennsylvania. Games six and seven will be played in Indy, if necessary. All home games will begin at 7:10. One additional schedule note: The game originally scheduled for Friday, April 12th between the Wheeling Nailers and Toledo Walleye has been canceled, due to all playoff spots and seedings being solidified. Montreal Carabins: 2023 Vanier Cup Champions

Jonathan Senecal and a stout Montreal Carabins defence proved too much for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon in Kingston, Ont.

Senecal's second-half touchdown led Montreal to a hard-fought 16-9 Vanier Cup win over a game Thunderbirds squad. The Carabins' defence didn't surrender a touchdown and finished the season allowing just seven field goals in their four playoff victories.

"We were confident coming in with the way our defence was playing," said Montreal head coach Marco Iadeluca. "When your defence plays that kind of football, going into any game you have to feel comfortable.

"And then we have number 12 [Senecal] at quarterback, which is just spectacular."

Seneca was awarded the Hec Crighton Trophy on Thursday as Canadian university football's most outstanding player. He added Vanier Cup MVP honours after completing 11-of-26 passes for 171 yards and an interception, as well as a team-high 50 yards rushing on 10 carries with the TD.

Senecal's seven-yard touchdown run at 8:47 of the third put Montreal ahead 16-6. The drive followed Kieran Flannery-Fleck's 14-yard punt that gave the Carabins possession at their 38-yard line.

"This is what we wanted," Senecal said. "We worked hard for 16 weeks and were able to come out on top, it's just a great feeling.

"Our defence is the best in the country and they just prove that week after week. They just make everything easier."

Montreal linebacker Nicky Farinaccio earned top defensive player honours.

UBC makes it interesting UBC made it very interesting, pulling to within 16-9 on Kieran Flannery-Fleck's 24-yard field goal at 9:48 of the fourth. The Thunderbirds marched from their 51-yard line to the Montreal 16-yard line before settling for three points.

Later, UBC drove to the Montreal 33-yard line before Garrett Rooker's pass on third-and-four fell incomplete with just over two minutes to play. After their defence held, the Thunderbirds took over at their own 35 with 1:30 remaining, but Rooker's pass on third-and-four gave the Carabins possession at the UBC 41 with 1:02 to play.

That led to a Philippe Boyer punt, which gave UBC a final possession at its 18-yard line with 3.8 seconds to play. Rooker completed his pass to Jason Soriano, but he was tackled short of centre field. Montreal to face UBC in Vanier Cup after downing Western in Uteck Bowl "We knew going in we had to be able to move the ball and score some points and we just weren't able to," said UBC head coach Blake Nill. "We moved the ball at times but I thought we had a couple of situations where you'd like to have back but that's the way the game is played.

"Montreal is a very good football team. We're a good team too, we just didn't make enough plays."

'Toughest team we played all year' Coach Iadeluca had nothing but praise for the Thunderbirds.

"That was the toughest team we played all year," he said. "They were resilient on offence, very athletic on defence.

"But I am so proud of this football team. They work hard, they're disciplined, they wanted this from day one and kept their eye on the prize the whole time."

Rooker finished 26-of-40 passing for 278 yards before an energetic Richardson Stadium gathering of 7,100 on a cool, breezy, overcast afternoon. Isaiah Knight ran for a game-high 73 yards on 15 carries.

Montreal's defence also came up big early in the fourth, stopping Knight cold on third-and-two at the Carabins' 53-yard line to protect their 10-point lead.

These two teams met in the 2015 Vanier Cup, which UBC won 26-23 in Quebec City. The Thunderbirds made their seventh appearance overall, having won four times, while Montreal was in the title game for a fourth occasion, also winning in 2014.

UBC held the edge in total offence with 345 yards to 323 for Montreal, but the Carabins dominated the rushing game with 163 yards to 84 for the Thunderbirds.

City of champions With the Carabins' win, Montreal becomes the first city since 1980 to boast Vanier Cup and Grey Cup champions in the same year. Last week, the Alouettes upset the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28-24 in Hamilton to secure the franchise's first CFL title since 2010.

Edmonton last claimed the Vanier Cup-Grey Cup double title 43 years ago.

Iraghi Muganda had Montreal's other touchdown. Boyer booted the converts while the other points came on a safety.

Flannery-Fleck finished with three field goals for UBC.

Flannery-Fleck's 41-yard field goal at 14:09 of the second quarter cut Montreal's half-time lead to 9-6. The Carabins threatened to extend their advantage with Carl Chabot taking Senecal's third-and-four completion to the UBC six-yard line on the quarter's final play.

It appeared Chabot had room to maybe get out of bounds, stop the clock and give Montreal a final opportunity to at least try a short field goal. Then again, UBC made an interesting decision to decline a holding penalty against the Carabins that gave them their third-and-four situation instead of second and long.

UBC mounted a promising drive from its 23-yard line but it ended with Knight's fumble that the Carabins recovered at their own 39 with 6:02 left in the quarter.

Flannery-Fleck put UBC on the scoreboard with a 32-yard field goal at 4:01.

Muganda's 18-yard TD run at 12:17 of the first put Montreal ahead 9-0. The Carabins went ahead 2-0 at 7:10 when Flannery Fleck conceded the safety.

Vanier Cup headed to Saskatchewan for 1st time The Vanier Cup will head to Saskatchewan for the first time.

U Sports announced Saturday the '25 Vanier Cup will be played in Regina. The 60th edition of Canadian university football's championship game will go at Mosaic Stadium and coincide with the University of Regina's 50th anniversary.

It will be just the third time ever the Vanier Cup is held in Western Canada.

U Sports also announced Quebec City will host the '26 Vanier Cup. It has staged the game seven times.
