1. When Lily asks if Nick is a Jezebels guy

Moira grins at June

and June has a small smile at the absurdity of that question because Nick would never

1a. Moira’s knowing look means that while she may not know the intimate details of their relationship in a way that, say, Rita does, she knows enough to know that the question is absurd, which indicates that Nick and June’s relationship isn’t trivialized in Toronto.

2. In comparison, when Mackenzie demonizes June at dinner, Nick is visibly upset and can’t even feign neutrality

and while Nick is very smart and has made many calculated decisions, there is always this undercurrent of impulsivity and honesty when it comes to June where he can’t mask his affection, which is why

3. He takes a chance to speak to Tuello because he just has to tell him that he wants to be the one to tell June about Rose

which puts him at risk

4. June’s exhale when Nick says her name and how relieved she looks, much like in 4x09, much like in 4x03, much like in 3x03 etc. etc.

5. During the phone call, when Nick tries to assure June about Hannah, he compliments Hannah by saying that she has some of June’s qualities

and in comparison when Nick asks June about Holly, she tells him that she loves the present she got him

6. I’ve had a few conversations and seen a few takes about how June takes Nick for granted or uses him and I’ve always pushed back on that and her reaction to his marriage is a good example of this. When he tells her he can’t move to Hannah’s district because he’s married, she doesn’t begrudge him, she doesn’t yell at him, she doesn’t lament that he was her only option to him, she’s a) heartbroken

b) echoes his words back to him

because she loves him.

7. Nick hanging up the phone because him being happy, being truly happy, would be being with June and Holly

and June crying (because, yes, the situation with Hannah) because the man she loves is married.

always love your analysis! do you think there's a reason nick was so bathed in light during the phone call? it was almost absurd, right?? you couldn't see his face. so much sunlight coming through... but it could just be a filmmaking choice.

Thank you! I was wondering about that because I was like, I remember in 2x12 I literally stopped watching the episode to talk about the lighting during the scene Nick and June talk about Hawaii

and I wondered if it was a callback to that particularly because in 2x12 they're talking about the fantasy of running away together but in this scene they're talking about the realities keeping them apart and maybe that's why the light is so bright it's obscuring Nick's face

and then I was like maybe the light is obscuring Nick's face because his body is physically in Gilead

but his mind is with June.

And then I was like maybe it symbolizes that June is his light

And then I remembered how one time in one of my cinema classes, my prof had the class analyze this scene in a movie that had the protagonist see/pass by a burning bush and we were throwing out all of these different theories, like one was Moses saw the burning bush as an example of God's divinity so maybe the character passing the bush was an example of a spiritual awakening, and then finally my prof was like yeah, sometimes a burning bush is just a burning bush. So I was like, lol, maybe this is just a filming choice that looks cool because this is The Handmaid's Tale.

And then I was like, but THT loves their heavy symbolism (ANGEL WINGS) like last episode dressing June in white as the angel and Serena in black as the devil and then I moved on, LOL.
