Favorite Albums and Music of 2020
Since we’re nearing the end of the year, I thought it would be good to reflect on my end of the years goals and also the things I took pleasure in this year seeing as crazy and emotional as this year has been. So over the next few days I plan to share how my goals went, what I’m proud of and how to continue, and what I enjoyed in this year of 2020. Beginning with my favorite music from this year.
Here’s my top albums:
1. Superbloom by Misterwives
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: superbloom, running in place, muse, 3 small words, coming up for air, decide to be happy, the end, whywhywhy, and it’s my turn
This album was such a lifesaver for me this year. While no I didn’t go through a gut wrenching breakup romantically, many of the songs were the heartache I felt after the falling out I had with the company I left and the despair I felt during the chaos. But then superbloom the single came out just after it all had passed and like the song said, I felt better. I had come out the other side and I deserved congratulations because I didn’t think I could survive. The happier songs then made me smile and feel better as 2020 got worse and mental health was a trial. I will forever be grateful for a gift of an album that this was.
2. Manic by Halsey
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: I’m Still Learning, 929, Graveyard, You Should Be Sad, Without You
I still listen to many of these songs daily even though this was one of the first albums of the year. Halsey’s voice and lifestory are reflected so authentically through the music and it’s just a wonderfully put together album. Can’t wait to hear more from her. I was supposed to see Halsey live this year, but that didn’t happen. She rescheduled to 2021, but I have a feeling June won’t be doable just yet.
3. No One Else Can Wear Your Crown by Oh Wonder
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: Hallelujah, Dust, Better Now, Happy, I Wish I Never Met You
Hallelujah was originally going to be my theme song this year, but when 2020 took its turn that changed. Still the third album is a treasure and a lot the music’s lyrics still bring comfort and catharsis for me throughout the year. I was supposed to seem them live, but whenever the virus clears I can’t wait to them perform these songs.
4. evermore by Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: Majorie, Willow, Ivy, Coney Island, No Body No Crime, Closure
5. folklore by Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: Illicit Affairs, The 1, peace, this is me trying, betty, cardigan
Taylor, the very fact you put out two huge albums this year is mind blowing enough, but they are wondeful and the alternative style suits you very much. These have been wonderful albums to relax and work to and the stories behind the lyrics are great for the imagination to run away with. And while it just came out, I’ve been listening to evermore almost on repeat since it came out because not only is a great sister album, but the storytelling just feels deeper. So thank you!
6. Under My Influence by the Aces
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: Going Home, My Phone is Trying to Kill Me, Lost Angeles, Daydream, Kelly, 801
I loved that these girls continue to put out solid albums and this one was not only another elevation of their style, but by letting the songs reflect the sexuality of its members, it brought it to another level. This is only the second album from them, but its clear they are bringing more exciting music and perspective onto the scene. Can’t wait for more.
7. Post Human Survival Horror by Bring Me The Horizon
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: Kingslayer, Ludgens, Parasite Eve, Obey, Teardrops
I never could picture myself saying I was a fan of harder metal or a fan of Bring Me the Horizon, but this album changed that and I have Babymetal to thank for that. Their collab on Kingslayer is not only the pure chaos and fun that is Babymetal, but hearing the reason behind the lyrics and meaning of the song gives me a great perspective on what BMTH was trying to achieve not only with this song but the whole album, which is you do fight back, you do what you can to end corruption, you don’t give up no matter the cost.
8. Conversations with Myself About You by lovelytheband
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: waste, loneliness for love, flowers (on my grave), I should be happy
During the times where it was harder to put up a front of being okay or being positive on what’s going on, I felt this album carried that perfect feeling of dejected, hating on yourself, and feeling empty which is why it became a favorite. Not that you ever want to wallow in those feelings, but when you need a moment to just sit with them, this album hit the right feelings.
9. Strange Days by The Struts
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: Strange Days, All Dressed Up (With Nowhere to Go), Burn It Down, Wild Child
The anthem album for 2020. It takes you through the emotions of feelings of being in quarantine, wanting to have fun when you can’t go out, and wondering when or if this will end anytime soon. I loved the way the band encapsulated this in this album and also still made it sound like a solid Struts album. I can’t wait to party with them again some days, but it was nice that they could capture their own feelings of this year into such a solid album.
10. High Road by Kesha
Tumblr media
Favorite Songs: Chasing Thunder, High Road, Birthday Suit, Potato Song (Because I Want To)
This was another great album by Kesha. It had its fun and silly songs and lyrics which you come to just enjoy with her, the fun party dance songs to just have a good time, but the surprise hit was Chasing Thunder. Again, it felt like this was a song that called to me and reverberated inside me as a way to describe who I am and what my life goals were and its something that whenever it came on gave me hope, when hope was hard to find.
Notable Mentions:
1. Carry On by The Score
2. Alicia by Alicia Keys
3. A Letter to My Younger Self by Quinn XCII
4. Colour Vision by Max
5. Rare by Selena Gomez
6. The Original Motion Picture Show Part 2 by Saint Motel
7. This is Our Life EP by Des Rocs
8. Goosebumps EP by Bastille
And some of my favorite songs this year that didn’t come from albums or I didn’t get the full album to enjoy (or in OneRepublic’s case: didn’t actually release the album and pushed it back until March 2021...):
1. Bang! by AJR
2. Bummerland by AJR
3. Level of Concern by twenty one pilots
4. Didn’t I by One Republic
5. Lasting Lover by Sigala
6. Not in the Same Way by 5 Seconds of Summer
7. Bored by Tessa Violet ft. Mandy Lee
8. Happy Face by Jagwar Twin
9. Be Kind by Marshmello ft. Halsey
10. Blinding Lights by The Weeknd
11. BxMxC by Babymetal
12. Dynamite by BTS
13. Head Up High by FITZ
14. OK Not to Be Okay by Marshmello ft. Demi Lovato
15. Only the Young by Taylor Swift
16. Perfecta by Luis Fonsi ft. Farruko
17. Still Have Me by Demi Lovato
18. Turning Up (R3HAB Remix) by Arashi
19. Wanted by OneRepublic
20. Wayne by Des Rocs
21. Brick by Brick by American Authors

34 Cool WiiWare Games That Are Going Away FOREVER*
*Unless Nintendo decides to sell them again when the Switch U 4DS VR comes out in 2025.
As you might have heard, starting next Monday Nintendo is taking away the ability to add funds to the Wii Shop, which will close down for good in early 2019. That means a whole bunch of great games won’t be able to be purchased anymore. In order to raise awareness of this, the most important issue of our times (after all the other issues), we spent the winter playing as many WiiWare games as we could over on our YouTube channel. Here’s a summary of the gems we encountered:
1. 3D Pixel Racing
A pretty challenging motion control racing game with Minecraft-esque graphics. Pro tip: use a regular old Wiimote, not a Wiimote Plus. Trust us, the Plus is too sensitive for this game and you’ll end up falling off the track every two seconds. Despite the difficulty, this one gets a recommendation because of the cool look and for giving us an excuse to use the Mario Kart Wii wheel again.
2. And Yet It Moves
Using the Wiimote’s gyroscope, this game has you move the world around you (rather than vice versa) to navigate the levels.  One of those “easy to learn, difficult to master” type of games that defined many of the best on the platform.
3. Bit.Trip Runner
Originally a WiiWare exclusive, although you can now play it on 3DS, PC, Mac, Linux, and probably some Japanese toilets. You run from left to right and jump, slide, kick and... jump again to the music. A tribute to the platforming classics that deservedly became a classic itself (and the sequel, available on Wii U, is even better).
4. BurgerTime: World Tour
You know, BurgerTime! If you don’t know, this is a good excuse to get acquainted with this ‘80s arcade title. Like in the original, you attempt to assemble giant hamburgers on a series of platforms whilst dodging humanoid food monsters, only this time the graphics are in 3D and it’s all happening in space, for some reason. NOTE: Ironically, this fast-food themed game can’t be bought in North America right now, only Europe.
5. Chrono Twins DX
Originally designed for the DS, the gimmick is that the main character is fighting enemies in two different time periods at once.  For the DS this used each screen for the different time zones, but with WiiWare you get a simple split-screen.  It’s quite unique and challenging as you’re basically playing two sidescrollers at once.
6. Contra Rebirth
Remember when dudes with rippling muscles and mullets got to be badass gunfighters and nobody complained they were toxic?  Contra sure does.  Konami gave “Rebirth” to three of their classic franchises on WiiWare (CastleVania and Gradius were the other two) but this was probably the best of the bunch.
7. Dracula: Undead Awakening
If you never get tired of mowing down undead enemies then this will scratch that itch.  Basically you get a bunch of different cool weapons and use them against a bunch of different cool monsters for as long as you wish, or at least as long as you survive.  The challenge is so high that even lasting ten minutes on your first playthrough has the game calling you “noob.”
8. Eduardo the Samurai Toaster
A simple run n’ gun game (think Metal Slug) starring a sentient toaster facing off against flying onions, spear-toting carrots, and what appears to be an army of angry playing cards. It’s not clear what the plot of the game is, and there’s not a whole lot of depth to the gameplay, but it’s still a fun way to waste an hour (or more, depending on the difficulty). It’s supposed to be even more fun with 4 players, if you can find three other Wii-loving weirdos.
9. Excitebike World Rally
Motorcycle races.  Simplicity works sometimes, and just like the original Excitebike this one proves it once more.  Just like the original you get a cool level creator, only this time you can share it with anyone and not just whoever you give your cartridge to.
10. Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition
Lots of different modes that still capture the appeal of the original arcade classic.  The overall look is kinda coked-up, which captures the ‘80s arcade scene reasonably well.
11. Frogger Returns
Only the one mode this time, but it serves as a reminder of the timeless quality and endearing appeal of the core gameplay.
12. Gnomz
A chaotic 4-player party game starring sock-obsessed gnomes. You go around a single screen collecting socks and stomping other players to kill them; it’s like life itself. (Or, as many have pointed out, like the Super Mario War fan game, but less illegal.) There are three modes and a variety of scenarios. Like with Eduardo the Samurai Toaster, the more players the better, but the single player mode ain’t bad (and that way, you don’t ruin any friendships).
13. Gyrostarr
A pseudo-3D shoot ‘em up where the main difficulty is that you can actually shoot the power ups away, and you kinda need those to finish the stages -- if you don’t collect enough energy, the portal at the end of the level closes on your face. The difficulty ramps up slowly but surely across 50 levels. Another difficulty is not getting an LSD flashback on those trippy bonus stages.
14. HoopWorld
A basketball/fighting game that makes surprisingly good use of the Wii’s motion controls. This definitely falls in the “easy to pick up, difficult to master” category, since there’s a pretty wide range of ball throws and kung-fu moves you can perform by shaking your Wiimote and nunchuck in different ways. Or you can just wave your arms randomly and hope you win. The game is currently unlisted in North America, which we’re hoping is a sign that they’re planning to re-release it in modern platforms (with online multiplayer, hopefully).
15. Horizon Riders
A futuristic on-rails shooting game that you play with the Wii balance board. If you have the Wii Zapper accessory, even better (and you’ll look even sillier), but it’s not necessary to play. You aim and shoot with your Wiimote while leaning on your balance board to move from side to side. Definitely a good reason to dig that thing out of your closet. Be warned, though, that the game crashed on us in the middle of a stage, as seen at the end of our gameplay video.
16. Jam City Rollergirls
Roller derby has never been as popular to watch as it is for people to randomly talk about every few years for the novelty, usually accompanied by a movie that flops at the box office.  The last time the mainstream tried to make this sport happen it resulted in this game, though, so there’s at least that.  You play as characters with hilarious names roller blading through others with random power-ups and combat moves.
17. Jett Rocket
It’s a lofty ambition to offer gamers something that will remind them of Super Mario Galaxy, and it might seem foolish to do so on an indie dev’s budget.  But Shin’en managed to deliver with an uncommon 3D platformer collectathon with good amounts of action sprinkled in.
18. LostWinds
When a developer approached a title with motion controls in mind, it always stood out more than other games that tried to crowbar motion controls into the scenery in the hopes of a shortcut to Wii success.  LostWinds is in the former camp, making you use the pointer to create gusts of wind to elevate the main character onto platforms and knock around enemies.  In fact it’d be more accurate to say you’re playing as the wind spirit rather than the story’s protagonist.  Fun game with a beautiful art style.
19. Maboshi's Arcade
Nintendo knows how to make simple games that present difficulty when you don’t expect it.  In the three modes of this puzzler you play as generic shapes but the controls are difficult to master.  It kind of has to be seen to be believed.
20. Magnetica Twist
A connect-three type of game where you fire marbles and stuff.  What ends up twisted the most are your wrists whilst trying to aim your shots with any sort of precision.
21. Max and the Magic Marker
There are plenty of side-scrolling platformers that use childhood visuals and hobbies to appeal to the player, and yet they never really get old do they?  In this one you use a marker via motion controls to create platforms and defeat enemies.  You also can go in and out of Max’s childhood drawings.
22. Monsteca Corral
This is a weird one.  A bunch of monsters vaguely shaped like Doshin the Giant are gathered together by an unseen god-ish alien to fight robots that said alien had created earlier, but they turned against him.  That’s the plot as we can best make out, anyways.  There’s also dinosaurs.  Recommended for those who like their fun to be completely unlike the other fun they’ve had with games.
23. Pearl Harbor Trilogy – 1941: Red Sun Rising
Old-school dogfighting in a new-school 3D game.  Well, it was new when it released.  Anyways you shoot down enemy planes, defend your base, attack naval fleets and get commendations you don’t deserve.  Sometimes you see the action from the POV of the bombs you drop, and it works much better here than in Michael Bay’s version of Pearl Harbor.
24. Pole's Big Adventure
Chindōchū!! Pole no Daibōken is bizarre Japan-only SEGA title made to parody the crappy platform games that came out during the 8-bit era. Despite being full of intentional design flaws, like power ups that kill you or background objects that suddenly cut your head off, the game is pretty easy -- until you unlock hard mode, where the boss fights are actually challenging. Still, you’ll be playing this one mostly to laugh at the dozens of Easter eggs.
25. PictureBook Games: Pop Up Pursuit
Not many board games made it to WiiWare, but this was easily the best.  It’s largely straightforward “run to the end of the board” contests, with plenty of opportunities to ruin friendships.  The art style is the main hook, looking like a pop-up book, like the title indicates.
26. Rage of the Gladiator
You fight for your life against larger-than-life mythological creatures, like ogres and minotaurs and senseis.  The game got compared frequently to Punch-Out!! and with good reason, but the combat is actually a more creative and the dialogue is more humorous.  A blast to play through the first time, and a blast to replay.
27. Snowpack Park
Unlike most of the games on this list, there’s no combat in this one and your blood pressure won’t ever raise.  There’s plenty to do but it’s fun stuff, mostly involving playing with penguins.  It works great as a sort of palette cleanser to the violent action-packed games primarily showcased in this list.
28. Sonic the Hedgehog 4
The 16-bit Sonic games still hold up today as all-time greats.  Sonic 4 didn’t live up to those expectations but it did get SEGA to think about their past a little more seriously, and helped lead to Sonic Mania.  Episode I is on WiiWare, but you’ll have to find Episode II elsewhere.
29. Space Invaders Get Even
Another sequel to another arcade classic, but with the novel twist of playing the game from the enemies’ point of view.  Word of warning: this is possibly the only WIiWare game that has DLC.  The initial purchase of 500 points will escalate up to 2′000 points if you’re enjoying yourself.
30. Star Soldier R
Top-down arcade-style shooter, and if you know the type you know the drill.  The amount of content is pretty bare-bones, as it’s basically just time attacks.  But the replayability is rewarding if you’re a fan of the genre.
31. Tetris Party
We hope you know Tetris.  This is a Tetris that has good multiplayer, interesting variants where you do things like create platforms for some guy to climb to the top of the screen or use the tetrinos to make exact shapes like that of an apple.  There’s also a balance board mode, and as stated earlier it’s good to have an excuse to pull out the balance board.
32. Vampire Crystals
Vampires used to live peacefully with zombies but now they don’t, and it becomes your problem.  Thankfully you get plenty of guns, some so powerful that you end up creating a bullet hell where you’re the one firing them rather than dodging them.  It looks simple but the game actually is quite tough.  It’s not Cuphead-level but you will fail many times over.  With plenty of content and being one of the last WiiWare releases, this title approached the platform’s fullest potential.
33. WarioWare DIY
What sets this apart from the 87 other WarioWare games? The fact that players could make their own minigames, leading to an avalanche of creative, insane, and even NSFW games. Unfortunately the servers are no longer online, but you can still find thousands of fan games online if you look hard enough. The included games are pretty fun too, and if you have the DS version, you can make your own and send them over to your Wii.
34. Zombie Panic in Wonderland
Shooting galleries are perfect for motion controls, but gamers don’t get as many as we deserve.  Thankfully this one helps rectify that, with an interesting story and cool comic-book art sequences that keep things moving between all the gunning down of zombies and various giant monsters.

Fall 2016 Shows Rankings and Write-Ups
1. Nobunaga no Shinobi (7/10):
Before I start with the write-ups, let me start by saying that I think this season is the weakest season of the year. When the number one show is a fringe 7-8/10 and I look at most of the shows with a tinge of disappointment, then it ends up being that way. Having said that, this is my “Underrated Short of the Season”, and basically became my AOTS. Basically this show is a historical short about a girl shinobi (an assassin like person dude?) working for Oda Nobunaga, and shenanigans ensue. The character designs are very much cutesie, but that’s the type of stuff I like, so I feel it’s fine. The best aspect of the show is it’s humor: even though it’s only 4 minutes, it’s able to make me laugh every episode with its fast paced call-and-response humor. At times it goes really fast, but that’s usually the case with these short shorts.
Now the negatives. With a historical short, there’ll obviously be historical references, most of which went over my head. However, that’s not a huge problem as prior knowledge of the subject isn’t required to enjoy the content anyway: they explain all of the things that are happening, so it’s not confusing if you’re out of the loop. Overall this show earns a high 7/10, low 8/10: would recommend.
2. Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan (7/10):
Now I loved Saiki as much as the next guy, and it’s a really good show. It’s clever and funny in its execution: I never know what direction it’s going to go and it almost always ends up making me laugh. It’s characters are great too: Saiki is your standard snarky protagonist with all of the superpowers, and the countless side characters help to create wacky situations for each episode. The only problem I had (and I feel like I’m the only one with this problem) is that the second half of the show was way less funnier for me. Maybe it was the new characters they introduced, maybe it was that they switched to a weekly format instead of the 5-minute short every weekday, but something about this season’s version of Saiki fell a bit short for me. If the first half of the show was a 9/10 for me, the second half is probably a 6-7/10. Overall a fun short that I would recommend to all, especially since it’s so underwatched for how good it is.
P.S.: The good news is that this show is getting a second season in the future, which means more Saiki! I’m excited that this show is getting a second season, but like all shows I’m cautiously optimistic.
3. Haikyuu!! S3 (7/10):
Yep, I have this show rated this “low” (low depends on how much you like this show). Now, a 7/10 for me is still a good show, just that it has a few flaws here and there. And the flaw for this show starts with the opponent of the match, Shiratorizawa. They were not what everyone on the show hyped them up to be: the all-powerful team to me felt really underwhelming. The main man Ushijima didn’t feel as intimidating to me as characters like Oikawa or even the tall dude from Dateko when Karasuno first faced them. He had his moments, but looking back he was just there most of the time to me. Everybody else on the team was fine as well, but there’s that one spiky-haired dude who I hated, and that was Tendo. He reminded me a lot of Betelguese from Re:Zero, and that’s not a good thing. He felt really out of place in a show about high school sports, and though I understand he was supposed to be a sort of enemy to rally against, I just felt uncomfortable watching scenes with him in it.
Another problem I had with this show was the formatting: the season was entirely based on one match, which did get a bit tiring after a while. They did the best they could with it by spacing out the match with flashback scenes, but like Shokugeki’s second season with the Autumn Tournament, there weren’t really any fun slice-of-life moments this season, which made the show kinda drag on a bit.
Other than that, this season was the classic Haikyuu we all know and love. There were some great episodes, like episode 4 and the last episode, especially with the final rally. The rise of Tsukishima was a bright point, and made me love him when I originally hated his character during the first season. Overall a solid 7/10, and excited for the next season of this show (whenever it may arrive).
After this point, I was too lazy to put my notes into full sentences, so because I want to put this out ASAP, here they are in full rough-draft mode.
4. Flip Flappers (7/10):
- Didn’t know what I was watching the first 5 or so episodes: not good or bad, just a thing
- Episode 6 was one of the best episodes of anime I’ve seen in a while
- Nice that the symbolism isn’t the only thing needed to understand the show: if you don’t want it, then that’s okay
- Animation very on point: great during action scenes
- Sometimes episodes could be hit or miss depending on whether you like what they’re parodying (Mad Max and mecha parodies weren’t really my thing); still though, fun to watch
- Whole arc with Mimi was a bit boring compared to previous episodes
- An interesting experience, decent show
5. Hibike! Euphonium 2 (6/10):
- Not as good as first season, and I think the multiple arc thing was the main reason
- Show felt very detached the first few episodes, especially with main conflict/source of drama coming from secondary characters
- Got better later through the season
- Yuri undertones are still not my thing, decide already KyoAni whether there is or isn’t going to be romance (doesn’t even have to be main ship)
6. Yuri!!! on Ice (6/10):
- Overall decent show
- Didn’t really care for the coupling of Yuri and Victor, and not because gay couple
- There were some fanservice-y moments that I didn’t enjoy (Swiss dude)
- Animation-wise was lacking other than first episode, but can’t really blame them as ice-skating hard as hell to animate
- Ending was a bit eh, everything felt a bit rushed
- Was a bit stale in the middle/end with the format of short performances one episode and free skate the next
7. To Be Hero (6/10):
- A decently done short
- Funny toilet humor, and scenes that were pretty emotional as well; did a nice job of blending both types of scenes
- Plot-wise was a bit confusing for finale until Reddit post mentioned what it was
- Actually pretty good animation during the action scenes
8. Watashi ga Motete Dousunda (6/10):
- Great comedy during the first few episodes, fell apart when they introduced Nishima (can’t blame them for that though, would get stale otherwise)
- Actually hated Kae’s character design, and the others as well
- The whole brother thing was a bit weird
- Still had some stupidly cliche stuff like the boob grab and the fall on the heroine stuff that harem anime usually have
- Ending was something I didn’t really mind, nobody was going to get chosen anyway
- Overall it was okay
9. Sengoku Choujuu Giga (5/10):
- Getting “second season”, should be interesting
- Some episodes completely flew over my head (like the singing one), but overall is a decently done short
- Comedy is very much improvised, but I enjoy it
- Animation very average
- Historical references once again sail over my head, only this time it is somewhat important to the show. Still entertaining nevertheless
10. Stella no Mahou (4/10):
- Good first half, horrible second half
- When it was just Honda and the three, it was mildly entertaining CGDCT
- Then they introduce new character to the club, and I HATE her
- My pet peeve of not believing someone when telling truth: annoys me so much
- Not to mention some questionable scenes, like Tamaki strip or the whole baby-making thing
- Overall a meh show
11. Nyanbo! (4/10):
- A two cour short that isn’t finished
- Yes, it’s made for kids, but still pretty bad
- Animation style is actually really nice, only good part of show along with opening song
- Female characters only exist to love the MC
- Other characters fit cliches to a T
- Somewhat dreading the second half of the show
12. Kiitarou Shounen no Youkai Enikki (3/10):
- Pretty dang cliche short
- Characters so bad, the only reason this show is bad to me
- Had some moments, but JPP hand joke (can count them on a mangled hand)
13. Okusama ga Seitokaichou!+! (2/10):
- Kept the lewd of the first season but left out all of the nice heartwarming moments with main couple
- Painful to watch, with every girl being either tsundere or airheaded, and Ui just looking on
- Went the harem route, which went about as well as you would expect
- Seriously though, only remember half an episode when main couple were doing romantic things; pretty bad
- Somewhat understandable as apparently manga at this time was going through changes (different magazine, guidelines, etc.), but still seems like they could skip to good part...
- Bad sequel to an okay show.
And that’s all for this week! Thanks for reading: sorry about the crude notes for most of them: I wanted to put this out as soon as possible. Overall, a pretty meh season, but had its moments.
Well anyway, thanks for reading, and I’ll see you in the next post which looks to either be the new TWiA post or the 2016 Awards post! See you then!
