He does, because she’s his mother, and he does because he has to.

Concern etched into the lines of her face, deep deep worry and upset in her eyes, she orders him, “Stay away from that boy as much as you can,” and Pran will, because he has to.

As much as he can.

It’s hard to track him down this week – sometimes Pran gets skittish – but Pat finds him on Wednesday! It’s just been art, and Pat is taking the not-allowed-but-whatever shortcut that goes behind and around the weird little separate building that’s been used for art since they switched where all the languages rooms are, and there-

“Pran!” he calls, running over.

As he does, Pran’s head jerks up and he looks over and his eyes go wide, face startled, but he doesn’t look mad so Pat knows he’s only stashing his books away because he likes an escape route, he’s not mad at Pat.

So, Pat grabs the folder furthest from Pran and picks it up, flipping through and seeing a bunch of physics notes in Pran’s neat handwriting and smooth, black ink, because Pran never seems to have a pen go dry in the middle of writing anything, it’s all so even and careful.

Pran reaches out for it, then his hand freezes like an inch away from it and he says, “Pat, give that back.”

“No,” Pat says, but he’s smiling at Pran and Pran smiles back.

Shaking his head and turning – saying with his shoulders I’m not waiting for you and saying with the half smile but you can follow me if you want, I guess, it’s whatever – Pran says, “I need the folder back at some point.”

“I’ll give it back later,” Pat agrees.

Pran runs off when he doesn’t have something hostage, but he’s never mad about Pat taking his stuff. It’s just a game they play.

“Has someone told you to do something you don’t want to?”

She’s genuinely concerned, he knows that.

But she hasn’t ordered him to be honest, so he’s got enough leeway to not say you, Mae, it’s always you, because that would hurt her feelings and it wouldn’t change anything anyway, and Pran instead says, “The teacher assigned us both to be in the band,” and lets her remember all that trial and error, years ago, when they had to figure out how the orders worked.

Pran’s parents know that his too-powerful, too-flighty aunt’s gift was for them, so their orders normally take precedence over anyone else’s; they also know that their later orders take precedence over earlier ones, unless they specifically build something in, like telling him to disregard later ones that contradict the one they’re making right now. This pause is, he’s sure, letting his mother remember telling him to always consider teachers’ orders to outweigh all but a select few of her own.

Of course, most of what Pran’s figured out, he hasn’t told them.

Or even written down.

It’s safer to keep what he knows to himself.

His mother closes her eyes, nods, and says, “I suppose it couldn’t be avoided at that school.”

Pran wishes he had any way of stopping what comes next.

Dissaya’s son is honest, kind, and good.

Those are things she knows about him, things that she needs to protect and nourish and help to grow, and things that can’t be poisoned in him the way they were in her. She doesn’t like making him sad, dragging him away from his friends, but Pran is so vulnerable.

Moreso because of the gift.

It made her heart freeze in her chest the first time she saw him on the playground, some smaller child cheering him on, Higher! Higher, and the face of frozen fear on Pran’s face not even slightly getting in the way of how high he was swinging-

She still shudders to think of it.

Her sister-in-law was unrepentant when she called. Of course a gift of obedience doesn’t stop at the walls of their household, she’d laughed, but it’s always going to be stronger for family, isn’t that nice?

It’s not in her nature to yell, really, especially not at her husband’s beloved little sister, but she made an exception that day.

And then she had started to plan.

The idea that her careful planning and careful instructions to Pran haven’t been enough, haven’t kept him safe…

She’s never a coward except when it comes to Pran.

Dissaya sends him away.

It’s not written down, not anywhere, but Pran has a list of things he knows to be true about his gift.

His parents’ gift.

If his parents tell him, directly, to do something, he can’t help but do it. There’s no resisting directly, from the second he hears the order he begins to carry it out.

Physically impossible orders are an absolute exception – they arrive at Pran’s ears like normal, non-magical words, just the way a normal sentence works for anyone else on earth. He won’t try to fly if someone tells him to.

If anyone outside his family tells him directly to do something possible, it depends on what his parents have said first, but normally… he has to do it.

Pat telling him to race counts.

Pat whining at him to stop ignoring him also counts.

Pran has some leeway in deciding what counts.

In fact, Pran decides what an order means. He can know his parents meant one thing, but if the actual words they used mean something else… Pran can pick, kind of. Only kind of. He’s been experimenting with those limits for years.

The final part of it, the part that he’s known from the start and can never let himself forget or forgive, is the part that’s least useful and most essential.

8. It’s not a gift.

Because Pran has those old orders – keep yourself safe, don’t hurt others, and always prioritise teachers over other kids – and they make something like a shield, but one that it hurts to hold. The order to ignore other people’s orders no matter what never, never worked.

They must be physically impossible. Or something like that.

MY SCHOOL PRESIDENT/BAD BUDDY – ARE WE ALL ON THE SAME PAGE?

Let me see if I got this right...

Bad Buddy's first trailer is released with the song "Same Page" by Tilly Birds as background music.

At around the same time of BBS's filming, Tilly Birds releases a single "Just Being Friendly", which is all about crossing the line from being friends to being lovers. The words "Same Page" also appear in the lyrics of this song.

BBS anchors its early portrayal of Pran's POV with the song "Just (a) Friend?", that speaks of his anguish whenever Pat unwittingly crosses the line and torments his long-pining heart with overly affectionate expressions of friendliness.

THEN in My School President the boys decide to make a music video for their own version of Tilly Birds' "Just Being Friendly", which they decide to give a BL twist.

Just like Toto, who in real-life is MSP's director, decides to give BBS's own version of the Kwan-Riam musical a BL twist in BBS Ep.7:

When Pran performs the song "Just (a) Friend?" at the Freshy Day Music Contest in BBS Ep.5, we see Pat come to the realization that his newfound romantic feelings for Pran are actually returned.

And when Gun listens to Tilly Birds' "Just Being Friendly" at MSP Ep.6 [1I4] 9.38, we see him come to the full realization (Ep.6 [1I4] 10.39) that Tinn is in love with him (and it's been hinted at that Gun already has feelings for Tinn).

They're really messing with us now, and all linear thinking in my head about these two BLs is in knots. But in a good way.

BONUS: When the MSP boys try to rework Tilly Birds' "Just Being Friendly" music video by giving it a BL twist – surprise! The second couple in the video already plays with the GL angle:

SECOND BONUS: One of the girls in the GL couple had a cameo in Bad Buddy – Jewly Porntip Kitdamrongchai, whom Pat mistook on the rooftop (in BBS Ep.2 [3I4]) as the green-tea gifter of Apartment 439. actually, fuck it - my korn apologist agenda is in.

i feel like we've been seriously mislead. we mostly saw korn (and pat's entire friend group) from pran's perspective up until now, and the moments when we saw them from pat's pov, they actually seemed quite reasonable (they ended up not picking a fight with wai in episode 5, even though he was really asking for it, and korn just shook his head when he saw wai in episode 7 and then left).

but like, let's talk about korn saying that he thought pat liked someone from architecture in episode 4. we were so wrapped up in our "korn is definitely a dick" agenda that we didn't realize he was literally voicing the audience's thoughts at that moment. and how attentive to his best friend must he be, if he figured out that pat has an eye on someone from architecture before pat figured it out himself? not to mention that - after pat says he likes ink - korn isn't relieved or happy or anything, there is no "thank the gods" moment.

actually, pat is the one to ask:

and after this question korn lightheartedly moves on with the rest of the conversation, not being bothered by that implication at all.

so apparently he kind of assumed that pat liked someone from architecture, and he didn't even say anything until they started talking about pat potentially liking someone else. like that's how chill he was with the idea of pat liking someone from the supposed enemy faculty - he didn't even feel the need to bring it up, much less attack pat for it.

compare that to louis in episode 6 - he basically asks the same question as pat does in episode 4:

but he is seriously and genuinely angry about the possibility of pran defending someone from engineering. imagine if pran's friends thought he actually liked someone from the faculty. hell on earth.

so yes, pat's friend group did act like dickheads sometimes, and i am not excusing that - but they weren't doing anything that pran's friend group wasn't also doing, and ultimately i think we haven't seen any proper representation of what pat's friends are actually like yet. and at least with pat, i think they are actually quite nice.

Thats why I come to you with a specific detail I haven’t seen discussed anywhere yet:

So after the first legendary EP 5 Kiss,

Pat pulls away and the second before Pran kisses him back, we can catch Pat slightly shaking his head as Pran's hand on his neck pulls him in.

This detail had me pondering so much that I've developed some ideas about it but I'd live to hear other thoughts.

Pat initiating the first kiss and visibly having a moment of relief and clarity after he kisses Pran makes the reaction of short resistant super interesting. What was going on in his mind?

What would have happened if Pran hadn't kissed him back?

But because Pran did, I can imagine how this sealed Pat's unshakable devotion to the love in his heart.

I also noticed the little headshake on my first watch of this scene. At the time, like you, I didn't know what to make of it either. BUT on later rewatch, I slowed down the scene frame by frame to see exactly what Pat was reacting to. This was difficult to fully examine since the angle of Pat's little head movement is shown from Pran's POV and not Pat's.

We have Pat pulling back from their initial kiss, his eyes are still closed, he slowly flutters them open to gauge Pran's reaction. His eyes are entirely focused on Pran’s face so he notices a beat too late that Pran has reacted, with his hand.

Pran stares at Pat, warring with himself, asking Do I want this? And decides in that split-second that he’s going to be honest with himself Yes, yes I do and pulls Pat in by the neck for a deeper kiss. Pat's little head move is him reacting to Pran's hand on his neck, he doesn't understand what's happening until he feels Pran's lips on him that second time.

It's difficult to capture a screenshot of because it happens so quickly but as soon as Pran moves his hand to grab Pat's neck, you see Pat (Ohm) react to the hand in his peripheral and then he's pulled into a deep kiss.

Look at the grip Pran has on Pat's neck, he wants this badly. And his unguarded reaction says as much. He desperately wants Pat in this moment, and he lets himself have him. He stops thinking for this breadth of time and just takes and takes and takes. And I love this so much for him. His decision to GIVE IN to what his heart desires rather than let his head win out. It's only 28 seconds but in those precious seconds Pran tastes for himself all the what-ifs, gets all his imaginations answered. And it's an Oh, that's what it's like. It's better than he could have imagined during all those times he quietly sat with his feelings.

This is such great reactionary acting by the both of them. In Safe House 2, OhmNanon talk at length about their acting techniques, the entire clip is incredibly fascinating so go watch it if you haven’t already. It really shows how professional and mature both guys are and how seriously they take their craft.  But since you asked about Ohm, I’ll speak more to his method.

I’ll specifically time stamp this part where Ohm talks about how as an actor he’s learned to be honest with his reactions. How he doesn’t wait for his “turn” to react according to the script, but reacts honestly and purely, he asks himself what would my character do in this situation? He doesn’t focus on what the script is telling him how his character should react. 

We’ve seen and heard in a lot of the behind the scenes videos and discussions that Ohm is constantly asking P’Aof for clarity on Pat because he sometimes doesn’t agree with scripted Pat’s reactions. Ohm himself often corrects course by going off-script and P’Aof ends up using his take! (For instance, Pat wasn’t supposed to cry at the lead up to the kiss. Ohm did that. And it just makes the emotional impact of his “no” hit that much more). 

Thanks to Ohm, we get a more fully realized version of Pat than what may have been on paper. And this results in a more sincere and relatable performance... just like the head movement we see in the scene you’re asking about. Ohm doesn’t just stand still and simply wait for his turn to act, he notices Pran’s hand movement and turns to look at it, but before he can fully digest what is happening, Pran has him by the neck and lips. And this makes his reaction to Pran kissing him that much more satisfying because it catches him completely off guard. All the intensity that we see Pat pouring into that second kiss is him reacting to Pran’s desperation.

We have truly been blessed watching these two masterclass actors portray Pat and Pran especially with how they act and react towards each other. We know that this is a scripted show, but the acting is so immersive and natural and genuine that it feels real. I don’t think it would have worked in any other actors’ hands. Thank you, anon, for your ask. It really made me put these thoughts down in writing.

The last scene of ep5 - Pat looked so sad that Pran just left him after they kissed. As the audience, we know Pran’s fears and I realise more people on tumblr seem to be on Pran’s side. I like/connect with Pat more. Imagine being told ‘stay away’, ‘I hate you’ often & Pat has tried to make Pran smile, spend time with him etc. I feel Pat’s gonna initiate/put more effort in their relationship while Pran might pull away. It hurts to be the only one initiating. hope Pran realises he’s hurting Pat :(

hiii nonnie!! yep, i absolutely agree with you! right now, i think pat's character is my favourite as well and i absolutely connect with and understand him very well. this was something i was thinking when i was watching the episode! the discrepancy between pat and pran's povs is emphasised throughout this episode, and it's very interesting to see how pat sees pran. i do think that while pat seems to be very emotionally intuitive (see: episode 3, where he spends the entire time checking into pran's emotions and transforming that into action; i have a set about that here) and does seem to realise that pran likes him too, in some sort of way (see: pran saying "pat, you've got to stop doing this to me." or even "why? do you want to be friends?), it's difficult to be in that position of having to initiate and then the other responding and then pulling away.

even though pat is very confident about himself (see: end of episode 4 where he says that he has good qualities and likes himself), he is extremely vulnerable when it comes to pran. he put out all his feelings and tested the waters by kissing pran gently. while i do think that he tends to be the one to initiate, there are times where pran comes to him too, like in episode 3 where he asks pat if he's eaten or even in episode 5 where we see pran pull him back in for the kiss.

i do think both of them right now are more caught up in their own feelings. neither of them intend to hurt the other: pran tells him to stay away because he's traumatised by the one time he did let pat get close and how the instant reaction from his parents was to pull him away. pat is more open in that aspect; he brings him food and makes him smile because that's just who he is, a boy who expresses his love through actions and someone who didn't have to directly face the consequences of being close to pran. i think we can also all agree that pran tried to self-preserve in the first few eps because of the simple fact that he thought that pat didn't like him back. he's overwhelmed by a) pat kissing him and b) the consequences that kiss has. pat is simply more open and expresses his love in a way that is perhaps easier to understand for us.

that being said, it is absolutely true that the two of them have hurt the other unintentionally! but that's just because they haven't been on the same level emotionally yet, like episode 4 when pat asks pran if he could like him/if he thinks ink could like him, which obviously hurt pran. such is the way of life! i'm really excited to see them communicate and let each other know where their heads are at, because i do think that people's behaviour can hurt you (pat's behaviour hurting pran because pat didn't know pran likes him; pran's behaviour of holding him at arm's length hurting pat because pran doesn't know that pat a) doesn't fully know how much/how long he's liked him and b) isn't thinking about the consequences yet) without it automatically being insidious.

Pran’s father and Pat’s mother strike up a friendship unknown to their spouses and children. At first they only talk about their sons’ hidden relationship but then it turns into a genuine friendship. It was only meant to be one scene!

Pran didn't really need a bodyguard, especially considering his magical power outstripped Pat's easily. Then again, Pat didn't need a job to know that protecting Pran was exactly what he wanted to do.

You know I arms-in-the-air cheered with all the inkpa we got this episode?? I was already excited at the possibilities of Pa starting uni, and just🤞please🤞at the scene of her alone on campus. Quickly switching to !!!! with the blurry-to-focused love interest pov and hands, which is one of two cool and dashing senior saving the freshman scenes we get this episode! And Ink does the headpat! That Pat does to Pran! I’m so happy, I love this show 💜

saaaame friend!!!! but it all felt like a dream to me?? i was like “am i really seeing this romantic setup for two girls in a bl??? is this for real?? i’m not being clowned or just clowning myself again??”

because honestly, i manifest so much stuff in my head that i’m aware have little chances of happening that when they actually happen i feel like i’m hallucinating them

it happened so many times during this episode with the inkpa moments and the patpran sniff kisses because i imagined a scene like that so many times, i legit thought i had finally lost it aldkskdks

but it’s even better because it’s real!!! and we legit got our little chunks of inkpa!!! the headpat took me OUT!!! and pa and her lil group of wlw friends drooling over ink who had just saved them 😍😍😍

I have a question for you because I’m honestly trying to wrap my head around it.

I think we can all agree that Wai was acting like a manipulative asshole in this past episode. He lost a lot of my respect. But I’m wondering if maybe we’re only seeing him like that because it’s in Pat’s point of view?

Personally, I really do feel like a lot of episode 7 is in Pat’s pov. The last couple of episodes have started to split the pov like any normal show, but the scene where we see most of Wai’s manipulativeness is the scene in part 3 where Pat is hiding behind the couch and Wai is asking Pran to take on his work for the play because he can’t manage his own time and took on too much at once (even though Pran already said he didn’t want to be the sound guy).

So do you think that scene is painting Wai out to be a bad guy because of the fact that it’s very much in Pat’s pov? I know p’aof also mentioned that Wai is a bad guy/friend. What do you think? I think I’m just trying to redeem Wai because I liked him so much at first.

look, i'm going to be honest, we've been playing this "wai only bad because pat has pran tunnel vision" game for like two weeks now, and it just doesn't work for me anymore. especially because this time around, though i can see why you are saying that we are still in pat's pov, we have seen things from at least a neutral pov this episode, and that changes a lot of things. like, all the scenes where pat wasn't present in episode 6 were very awkward - they actually genuinely felt like a chopped-up version of events with so many things definitely and intentionally left out. that feeling isn't there in episode 7.

there are two scenes of wai trying to convince pran to work on the play more than he wants before pat interferes with our perception of the situation at all, and i know some people think that maybe wai is doing this to encourage pran to do what he loves, but idk about that one fam - unlike with the freshy contest, which he was reluctant to agree to, but eventually was very happy to participate in, it almost seemed like he agreed to do the play out of obligation (and also to get wai out of the room and stop the conversation he knows pat is overhearing and not feeling particularly good about). i also don't see him nearly as excited about this whole thing as he was about the freshy contest - the first time he seemed really happy about the play was when pat stepped into the picture (gods bless you my dear boy <3). oh, and one more thing for wai. the scene where pa accidentally runs into him and he is starting to say "watch where you're fucking going", but then stops because it's a cute girl? absolute clown behavior.

so frankly i feel like at this point we are doing way too much mental gymnastics to defend his behavior, and we just need to face the facts.

but holy shit, i haven't actually heard of p'aof saying that he was a bad friend/person??? do you remember where he said that? i would really appreciate it if you shared (no problem if you can't find it anymore or don't remember though <3).

hello dear anon!!!! (yes im getting through these slowly but surely so bare with me)

so in regards to teasers, the dreaded topic I’ve been scared to touch, i do believe that it’s misleading… somehow.

these editors know what they’re doing. they know how to put clips and lines together to tell a very different story. we saw it for the ep 4 preview with the whole ‘would you like me?’ line. they like to misdirect us. like yes previews can’t lie entirely, we will see those scenes and hear those words, but context has again and again redefined parts of this show and you can see that with previews too, how looking back on preview when you know what the ep is like and see the plot points they were trying to hide from us. and that’s never been more true for ep 12. even more so bc we don’t have anything left from trailers or credits, all we’ve seen is those few seconds and it’s not a lot to go off at all. which just makes it easier for them to lead us in a different direction from where they’re actually headed.

the thing is, im not exactly sure what they’re misdirecting us from. i don’t think it’s misleading to the extent that there’s actually no break up, I think we’ve all come to terms with that. but something is definitely off. something tells me there’s more to the story than them breaking up, years passing and them reuniting. it leaves me with too many questions and too many loose ends. and i have no clue what that thing to fill everything in will be, but my faith in there being more is enough right now.

and just to get into the preview a little more, what i find interesting is that it almost seems to be from pat’s pov. pov hasn’t really come up as a discussion since early eps where we saw a clear divide between pran and pat’s pov between eps 4 and 5, but after ep 6 it just seemed to be a whole mixed pov experience bc they were together and on the same page and that makes sense. now, we see pat at work, pat in their old dorm, pat looking at pictures and reminiscing. pran only enters the equation when he walks into the room. which makes me think it’s possible we might only see one side, pat’s side, of the story. and this is kinda supported by the fact that everyone else in the story seems to be around pat. pa is still around pat obviously and that means ink is too, and pat is working with both korn and wai. he still has a connection to everyone so to see the story from his side makes sense in the fact that we’d get to see everyone else too.

but this just makes me more nervous about pran. there is rlly no indication of what happened during that period, and to then not catch up with pran until he enters pat’s life again… like i just wanna know what happened. i wanna know if he separated himself, if pat got to keep all their friends and pran left bc that would rlly fucking hurt. and not just for him, but for pat to still have that same group all that time and no pran when pran should be there, this is where pran belongs, and all the people around him are a waking reminder of that, just…. ugh i didn’t want emo hours but here I am.

anyway, yep, I just think the preview is so bare bones that it’s kinda hard to get anything from it. everything in it could be twisted one way or another to construct a number of different narratives, so i guess all we can do is sit and wait. which is maddening.

What an episode, it was magnificent, I need more!

I needed to tell you a thing. I actually convinced a v good friend of mine to watch the show with me on Friday night, and she genuinely sobbed in my arms for 10 min straight after ep 5 and now we will watch each episode together in the future and just the power of this show, my guy.

I personally had a hard time really focusing on anything deeper than surface level for this episode because I think I was caught up Pat's chase, which is real rare for me to do, the sheer will of Pat went through the screen for me. I even had a had time focusing on the pov aspect, like which lens to watch it through. May I ask you thoughts?

But, I have got a future thought for now. The shot of Pat looking sad, walking from Pran's room back to his, very well could be a parallel to Pran in Pat's room in ep 2. They could be having a flirt-off in Pran's room and Wai + co knock, forcing Pat to hide now and Pran to distract. Just a possibility, mayhaps.

Also, in the end credit scene of Pat holding Pran's bag, why does Pran have a chain wallet? Like, why?

All in all, head empty, no thoughts ep 6 was sooo good.

heyy, my dear reliable anon!! this episode was really good, and i'm very glad that you found someone to share the joys (and indeed heartbreaks) of this magnificent series with!

i agree with you, my first instinct also wasn't to analyze anything deeper about it all, and i think it's in big part due to the fact that - for the first time ever - we didn't really need to get into either of the boys' heads to see what's happening. pat was so open and honest about what he wanted, and pran was also more vocal than he's ever been (besides, even the things that were left unsaid we figured out episodes ago), so this time around we really didn't need to dig deeper to understand what was happening, which is why we didn't.

i personally think we are still in pat's pov, though the curtain isn't completely closed on pran's pov either. but what i think solidifies the fact that we are seeing things mostly through pat's eyes is that we haven't been shown the entire conversation pran had with his friends, and that we had this tense scene where we were definitely in pat's shoes, expecting the possibility of him being beaten up (though we did know a little more than him, and we had no doubt pran would come up with something to protect his boy, it was definitely still an anxious moment which we all shared with pat).

as for that future scene, perhaps you are right, but i'm annoyed just thinking about it because at this point i'm very annoyed by wai and louis ngl.

also, not you roasting pran's fashion choices kfjglkdfjglkfdgj a chain wallet can be convenient sometimes, ok? maybe they are on a trip away somewhere, and it's easier to carry money that way. perhaps the beach again? (what an adorable thought, though? imagine if that beach becomes a special place for them, and they return there from time to time?)

When Pran asks him why his wearing the friend unfriend shirt at the architecture building, everyone agrees it's because of wonderful reasons that kinda goes over Pat's head. And I agree too. But it's also because Pran wore it not even a few days before in the construction montage, when the Architecture students find the message written by the Engineering students. And wouldn't that have been a fun couple of questions if Pat had got caught by Wai, Safe and Mo?

Also I am the anon that talked to you about unreliable narration, I am very excited to see if they indeed do go forth with a combined pov, or whether they pull it back to one.

Also also, a song rec from little old me, but the further the series go, the more I feel like 'dreaming' from smallpools just fits in the dynamic of both the series as a whole and both Pat and Pran

hey, dear anon!! oh absolutely - i remember how i freaked out when i first saw pran in that t-shirt, already knowing that pat would be wearing it. pran's friends would definitely also freak out if they saw pat in it, though for different reasons. (also "a fun couple of questions" is a hilarious way to put it).

and yesss i remember you, must feel very nice to be correct all the time!! i think it's very interesting that they changed the pov after four episodes, because we have twelve episodes in total, and four is exactly 1/3 of twelve, so 👀 maybe we are indeed getting that combined pov starting from episode 9.
