i will say that like, having actually read the comics, i know that the batfamily are all complex characters with equally complex histories. but a surface level reading of the bats like you would get from a fanfiction or a season of wfa? it will give you basically a bunch of blank slates. the base-level "guy who lost his parents and fights crime" gives you just enough tragedy to pretend the character you made up is also complex. now you have what is essentially a group of white guys you can play with like dolls. i think part of it is that these days people have no desire to actually do more than skim the surface of anything, but part of it is also just that the blander you keep the bats, the easier it is to write your #batfam fanfiction
