Easing Back Into Dance Classes
I am out. of. shape. When I try to dance, I feel completely stiff, weak, and out of control. It’s fine, there’s been a pandemic, everyone’s out of shape. The only direction I can go from here is up!
I’d like to work up to dancing 6-10 hours a week, between taking class and practicing at home. Most of my practice will be ballet, but I’ll practice jazz, modern, improv, and maybe a bit of tap, too. Those will be supplemented with focused practice sessions, workouts, deep stretching sessions, and running.
Here’s how I’ll go from sedentary to ^that^ over the coming weeks.
Week 1: One hour of ballet.
Weeks 2-3: Two hours of practice per week, either two 1hr ballet classes, a 1.5hr ballet class and a 30min workout/stretch, or a 2hr ballet class
Weeks 4-6: Three hours of practice per week broken up between ballet, working out/stretching, and focused practice. Must practice at least two separate days per week. Run once a week.
Weeks 7-10: Four hours of practice per week. At least two hours must be ballet. One hour maximum can be a supplemental dance style if desired. Must practice at least two separate days per week. Run twice a week.
Weeks 11-15: Five hours of practice per week. At least three must be ballet. At least 30min must be a supplemental dance style. Must practice at least three separate days per week. Run three times per week.
Week 16+: Six or more hours of practice per week. At least three must be ballet, at least one must be supplemental dance styles. Must practice at least three separate days per week. Run three times per week.
One week of one hour, two weeks of two hours, three weeks of three hours, etc. On this schedule, I’ll be up to dancing six hours per week by the end of February, and I’ll have almost a whole year to maintain and grow from there.
Yay dance!
