It offers up a large surface area that can fit bigger laptops, and you can tilt the main platform up, which is especially handy if you’re sketching on an iPad. There’s a tiny little drawer you can use to store cables or other tchotchkes. It’s hovered between $40 and $50 since the pandemic began.

The Lenovo Yoga 9I is 14-inch convertible ultrabook. This configuration features an 11th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, 8 gigabytes of RAM, and a 256-gigabyte SSD. It also comes with a stylus, which packs away in a handy storage slot.

Flexispot Standing Desk

I’ve tested and really like Flexispot’s EN1 standing desk, but this version goes a step further by adding USB charging ports (two USB A and one USB-C) and a drawer so you can clean up your desk clutter. There are four height memory buttons, so you can preset the perfect height for when you sit, stand, and configure it for others in the household. This one even has a child lock that prevents kids from operating the desk.

Click the on-page coupon to see the discount at checkout. I’ve been using a similar version of this desk for more than a year and it has served me exceptionally well. This one doesn’t have folding legs, but it’s spacious at 63 inches, and still takes minutes to set up. The desktop is particleboard and nothing special, but it feels solid.

This is one of the most popular standing desks around, and for good reason: it’s pretty much the best. (WIRED reviews director Jeffrey Van Camp uses it and agrees.) The bamboo top is exquisite and eco-friendly, and there are a myriad of ways to customize the desk to your liking. You get a 15-year warranty on all the desk frame components, as well as the mechanical parts, motors, and electrical components, which is rare.

BenQ Curved Monitor

Sure, you’ve probably used a 24-inch monitor before, maybe even a 27-inch one. But what about a 32-inch monitor? There’s enough room to fit two browser tabs side by side. You also get a high resolution (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) on this VA panel, support for AMD’s FreeSync if you plan on gaming and need a fast response, and the monitor itself supports a 144-Hz screen refresh rate. The array of ports on the back include HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, USB-A, plus a headphone jack, and it can be VESA mounted if you want to ditch the stand. It has dipped to this price before, but not frequently.

OK, hear me out. Sometimes you just don’t want to switch tabs. It’s 2021, people! This super ultrawide from Samsung has a screen so large and wide, it will probably hang off of your desk. But it can probably fit three full-size spreadsheets side by side. For some folks, that’s worth $900. This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for this monitor. The VA panel has a 120-Hz screen refresh rate, it’s curved, gets incredibly bright, and has a whopping 5,120 x 1,440 pixel resolution. Just know that you may need a fairly powerful PC to run intensive apps and games on this behemoth of a screen.

Want a large screen that can reasonably fit on your desk without spending too much? This Lenovo monitor has positive reviews around the web, a 2,560 x 1,440-pixel resolution, and a 75-Hz refresh rate that works with AMD’s FreeSync platform. You get an HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity, plus a 3.5-mm headphone jack on the back. VESA mounting support means you can reclaim some space on your desk. This is the lowest price we’ve seen yet.

If all you need is a simple, external screen, then this 24-inch monitor should do the job. My partner has been using it for a year with no issues. It has VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports, along with a 1,080p resolution. It doesn’t have VESA mounting capabilities.

Vissles Portable Monitor

If you’re itching to go back to working out of a coffee shop but got used to the luxury of a monitor hooked up to your laptop, well, here’s the solution. We tested and really like this portable 1,080p touchscreen monitor (9/10, WIRED Recommends). It has dual USB-C ports as well as Mini HDMI, so it’s easy to connect it to an array of devices, and it’s slim enough to stow it in a backpack.

This is an elegant monitor mount if you want to ditch the stand to clear some space on your desk. I’ve been using it to hold up my 34-inch ultrawide for the past two years and it hasn’t failed once. We haven’t tested it, but Fully’s Jarvis monitor arm is also discounted for $89 ($20 off).

This HP monitor doesn’t have as high a screen resolution as the Lenovo above (it’s just 1,920 x 1,080 pixels), so you might see more pixels, but it has built-in speakers, can be VESA mounted, and has HDMI, DisplayPort, and VGA ports.

Razer Huntsman Mini

If you’re like me and want a compact mechanical keyboard to save on desk space, then try the Huntsman Mini, which is also in our keyboard guide. It has 60-percent of the keys normally found on a regular keyboard, so there’s no NumPad or even arrow keys. Nice, small, and simple.

This is as subtle as mechanical keyboards come. Yes, it has RGB lighting like almost all gaming keyboards these days, but you can turn it off if you prefer. WIRED reviewer Jess Grey says the keys are durable, quiet, and you get a full-size number pad.

Want no wires at all? This is the way. I’ve been using this Vissles mechanical keyboard for a few weeks and it is excellent. It’s clicky yet quiet, sits slightly sloped toward you, and has a wonderful layout (with arrow keys, too!). SteelSeries Apex Pro Keyboard

We love this keyboard because you can customize the type of mechanical switches in each key for a truly personalized typing experience. There’s also a nice LED display for system alerts, volume, and other things you can configure with SteelSeries’ software. And, of course, RGB.

This reliable wired mouse is frequently on sale, but this is one of its lowest prices ever. It has customizable RGB lighting, quick response times, and two extra buttons on the left edge.

I used this mouse for more than two years with no problems whatsoever. It’s simple yet well built, with a reliable and speedy connection as well as no noticeable input lag. The single AA battery it requires usually lasted me three to four months before it needed replacing, and that was with my heavy use.

For an upgraded mouse experience, this used to be our top gaming pick. It was recently supplanted by the SteelSeries Prime Wireless, but still has industry-leading response times, optical switches, and wireless connectivity. Unlike many wireless mice, you don’t need batteries. It comes with a dock you can plop it on for wireless charging. Better yet, it’s ambidextrous, so it’s a great option for righties and lefties.

Bose Noise Cancelling 700

These usually dip to $278-$298 when they’re on sale, but this is the lowest price ever on our favorite wireless headphones. These Sony cans have long battery life, a comfy fit, and some of the best sound quality for the price. They also excel at noise canceling—important if you need to drown out the construction happening outside. (They’re also our favorite ANC headphones.) In this version, Sony also improved call quality, which makes them a solid choice for Zoom meetings.

Like the Sony pair above, this is the lowest price ever for these Bose headphones. They’re an especially excellent pair if you make a lot of phone calls—even if you’re in a noisy coffee shop or the kids are yelling in the next room, they’ll silence the world around you so the person on the other end will hear you clearly.

The Cloud Flight S is one of our favorite wireless gaming headsets, but it’s great for anyone that wants headphones with a built-in mic that comes up to your mouth. WIRED reviewer Jess Grey says you an excellent soundstage, 30 hours of battery life, and the microphone is detachable. It doesn’t look too obnoxious, unlike some gaming gear, and the comfy earcups mean you can wear ’em for a while.

Understated design is something we appreciate in a gaming headset, especially when it’s going to serve double duty as a pair of work and/or Zoom meeting headphones. SteelSeries has always been great at providing headsets that don’t look out of place in a home office. The Arctis 5 is one of our faves for PC gaming (the mic is quiet on PS4). It fits comfortably for long periods of time, has an excellent microphone that hides away inside one of the earcups when not in use, and produces rich, resonant sound.

If you want to spend less, the excellent corded SteelSeries Arctis 1 is $35 ($15 off), and it’s our favorite headset under $50.

1More ColorBuds

These are our favorite earbuds (8/10, WIRED Recommends) for most people. That’s because they’re affordable (especially on sale), offer up a comfy fit, are sweat-resistant so you can use it for your home workouts, and they manage to sound pretty great for the price. They hold six hours of battery life, but you can pop ’em in the case, which holds another 16 hours.

These earbuds have gone on sale at this price two other times since April, but they made our list of best workout earbuds, so we’re including them. If you want a single pair to transition from your Zoom meeting to the gym, this is it. Jabra improved the microphones so call quality is great, and they sound good, too. They have a two-year warranty, a comfortable fit, and have physical buttons so your sweaty hair won’t switch tracks automatically mid-run. Read more in our review.

Charging, Cables, and Hub Deals

Satechi USB-C Multi-Port Hub

Plug this USB-C hub into your laptop and you can now connect an array of accessories. There’s an Ethernet port for faster internet, HDMI to hook your laptop up to a monitor, and even a MicroSD and SD card reader if you need to transfer photos or other documents. We’ve tested similar hubs from Satechi and they’ve worked well. This is a match of the lowest price this hub has dropped to. Belkin has a similar hub (with similar ports) also on sale for $50 ($50 off).

I tested and like this dock, which lets you plug in and charge multiple gadgets through one system. That means saving up on the number of outlets you need. It’s not going to charge your iPads or bigger devices as quickly as usual, but it’s still really convenient. The front area is also a wireless charging pad for your wireless earbuds case. Satechi is offering 33 percent off other work-from-home tech gear if you want to take a look.

This hub from Anker is made for MacBooks. It’ll take up two USB-C ports on your Apple laptop, but in return, you get access to nine other ports. This includes two USB-A and two USB-C ports, an HDMI, Ethernet, MicroSD and SD slots, plus a 3.5-mm headphone port. It can passthrough power to recharge a MacBook Pro.

Razer Charging Pad

This is the lowest price we’ve seen on this wireless charger, which is in our guide to the Best Wireless Chargers. It’s a well-designed pad you can pop your Android phone or iPhone on, but what makes it special is the RGB lighting underneath. You can plug the USB-C port into your PC and download Razer’s Chroma software to activate unique lighting effects, too.

Charging adapters are getting smaller and smaller while outputting more power than before. This dual-port Anker charger should be sufficient enough to recharge an iPad Pro and even a MacBook (maybe not a MacBook Pro under heavy load). It comes with travel adapters, which is nice.

iPad Air

Apple updated the iPad Air in 2020 to make more powerful than the standard iPad, but not quite as luxurious as the iPad Pro (learn more in our iPad guide). It can even use the second version of the Apple Pencil, meaning the stylus stores and charges magnetically. It’s powerful so you can crank out some work on it thanks to iPadOS, which is getting more robust with every update. You also still get some old-school features like Touch ID (it’s integrated into the side power button).

I tested and like Lenovo’s slightly newer M10 HD, but this tablet should work similarly well. It’s not very powerful, so don’t expect snappy performance, but it’s one of the few good cheap Android tablets out there. Unlike Fire tablets, which also run on Android, you can access all the apps in Google’s Play Store, just like any Android phone. This one’s handy to have around the house, whether it’s for following cooking recipes or joining a Zoom meeting in another room.

Webcams were hard to find last year, but they’re finally in stock (and at reasonable prices). This one from Logitech will give you 1,080p quality and has a privacy shutter so you can block the camera when you’re not using it.

You probably are running out of outlets in your home. We haven’t tested this power strip from Anker, but you get six outlets, two USB-A ports, and a USB-C port. That’s pretty much all most people need to plug in at a desk, if not more. The USB-C port is rated for 30-watts, which means it can charge an iPad Pro just fine.

Dealing with large files? If you need to move them around from the office to your home and don’t want to deal with long upload times, this portable SSD is your solution. It can store up to 2 terabytes and includes a USB-C-to-USB-A or USB-C-to-USB-C cable so you can plug it into your devices. This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen it.

This isn’t a huge discount, nor is it the lowest price we’ve ever seen (it dipped to $59 in 2019), but webcam prices have been inflated due to demand during the pandemic. We’re finally starting to see things go back to normal, and this is still a good price for the best webcam we’ve tested. It even has a built-in ring light!

The best part about the iPad Mini is the 8-inch screen, which is perfect for browsing in bed after a long day at the desk (or for travel). The Mini supports the first-gen Apple Pencil, which makes it great for jotting down notes during Zoom meetings or doodling in the cafe as you procrastinate. Not sure which iPad is right for you? Router, Security, and Home Deals

Nest Wifi

Working remotely means you need good Wi-Fi. WIRED reviews director Jeffrey Van Camp uses and loves the standard Eero mesh Wi-Fi router in his home. This deal is on the Pro version, and this is a match of the lowest price it’s ever been. Amazon, which owns the Eero brand, says the Pro is more than twice as powerful as the standard model. There are two Ethernet ports (one for the router and the other for hardwiring it to another device like a PC). This 3-pack lets you place the routers around your home to create a mesh system for robust coverage everywhere. If you already own several Wi-Fi 6-enabled gadgets (lucky you), the Eero 6 is also on sale for $181 ($98 off), also the lowest price ever. (You can read our Wi-Fi 6 explainer here).

If you want a more aesthetically pleasing router, we like Google’s Nest Wifi—even though it spells Wi-Fi wrong. This deal is on the two-pack, which includes two full Nest Wi-Fi routers (not the mesh extender), and it’s the lowest price we’ve ever seen. It’s dead simple to set up, has great guest network features, and is rated to cover up to 4,400 square feet.

For a more traditional (mesh-less) router experience, this is the one to get. It supports Wi-Fi 6, so you can connect more devices than ever and still maintain a good connection to all of them, and you get five gigabit Ethernet ports built-in to hook it up to your primary devices.

Working from home means you don’t necessarily get the same security protections your office used to provide. This security key lets you keep your accounts secure with two-factor authentication. Pop it into the USB-A port of your laptop and PC to authorize access, or tap the NFC end to your phone. Just know if you use the LastPass password manager, you’ll need to upgrade to a YubiKey 5. If you’re unsure how it works, we have a guide.

If you’ve upgraded your home office with more and better equipment, you’ll want to make sure you keep it protected. Wi-Fi-enabled security cameras have their own host of privacy concerns, but if you follow the best practices we mention in our Best Security Cameras guide, they should give you some peace of mind. We like this one from TP-Link’s Kasa brand. As the name suggests, it can pan and tilt and you can control it via the app. You get 1,080p video quality, motion detection, and it works with Google Assistant and Alexa, so you can view the feed on select smart displays. It’s not the biggest discount, but this is a match of the lowest price it’s ever been.

Roborock S6 MaxV

Working from home can mean juggling a lot of tasks. One of those doesn’t have to be vacuuming the house. Get a robot to do it for you instead during your lunch break! This is the lowest price ever for this robot vacuum. It’s in our Best Robot Vacuums guide, and you can read more about it in our review, but if you have a pet, it’s a no-brainer. It has powerful suction and has cameras that can identify and avoid obstacles (even pet poop).

We are coffee snobs here at WIRED. We have guides on the Best Latte and Cappucino Machines, cold-brew coffee makers, coffee subscription services, coffee grinders, portable coffee makers, rugged French Presses for the outdoors, portable espresso makers. But maybe you just want your daily caffeine fix without any effort and miss the ease of pushing a button on the office Keurig. If that’s you, this model should satisfy. You’ll need to supply your own K-Cup pods, which are now recyclable—for what that’s worth.

WIRED writer Arielle Pardes likes this under-desk treadmill. It helped her log 8 miles walking on it on her very first try, all while emailing, responding to Slacks, and writing. If you’re using a standing desk and want to feel more active, this is a great solution. This is almost a match of the lowest price we’ve seen for it (but that was before the pandemic).

Coway Airmega 200M (about 2 feet tall)

Since you’re spending so much more time at home, you may as well keep the air clean. This is our favorite air purifier for small rooms. It’s small, so it will fit pretty much anywhere, and it is rated for spaces up to 361 square feet. There’s an included air quality monitor that will turn the machine off when it doesn’t detect pollution.

If you've got a big budget, you might have your eyes on a MacBook Pro. These are the most expensive Apple laptops around, and the latest model has a unique Touch Bar. This feature lives right above the keyboard, and it's a mini touchscreen that will display changing information, depending on what you're doing. If you're editing home videos in Final Cut, for example, the Touch Bar will turn into a mini timeline that lets you quickly navigate through your clips. Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro

This Apple is at the very top of the tree in terms of power, size and price. Putting the Pro moniker to good use, this six-core laptop is designed for the most power-hungry tasks such as video editing and computer-aided design. It will surely be overkill for anybody who doesn't do those tasks on a daily basis, though. This model has now been superseded by the 16-inch model, which we have not yet tested.

Apple Macbook Air 2020

This is the latest version of Apple's popular 13-inch laptop, which starts at under £1,000 for a model with an Intel Core i3 processor. We've testded the mid-range Core i5 model. It has a high resolution screen and a very attractive design, although keep in mind that the processor is a slower form of Core i5 than the one you'll find in the MacBook Pro.

Mac vs Windows vs Chromebooks

MacOS, Windows 10 and ChromeOS all have their own strengths and weaknesses. MacOS is buttery smooth and is the go-to operating system for many creative industries, but it also requires you to shell out a huge amount of money on a premium Apple device.

MacBooks run smoothly and can keep viruses at bay, but they aren't cheap.

Windows, meanwhile is available on a huge range of devices from ultra-budget to super-premium and, for many, is still the operating system they know best. But it's not without its downsides: Windows 10 updates are still a major sticking point for many people, and the fact that Windows 10 doesn't run particularly smoothly on very cheap laptops.

That's where ChromeOS comes in. This operating system is little more than a fancy web browser, with web apps that work best when connected to the internet. There's a range of budget devices available, and a few premium options as well. There's no faffing with huge updates and since everything is in a browser, there shouldn't be any problems with programs crashing either.

What do I need to know about MacOS?

MacOS (formerly known as Mac OSX) is extra useful for people who own iPads and iPhones, with a host of clever features that lets you share and work on files seamlessly on all your devices. You can also make and receive calls on your computer; no need to reach for the phone any more. There's also the Siri voice assistant that'll let you ask questions, set reminders and issue other commands with just your voice.

The latest version of MacOS is called Catalina, which launched in Autumn 2019. This update added a host of new features, including the ability to run iPad apps on your MacBook, which will be handy for when you start a task on your tablet and then move over to your laptop. It also heavily redesigned several key Mac apps including iTunes, which has been split up into three separate programs for music, films and TV, and podcasts. Reminders, Notes and Photos have been overhauled, and you can now also use your iPad as a second screen for your MacBook. And, as ever, MacOS is arguably the best operating system to choose if you already own an iPhone; things sync and work together more seamlessly than other combinations of phones and laptops.

Selecting the right Mac laptop isn’t easy, with three core models and four versions of the MacBook Pro - Apple’s most powerful and versatile laptop - to choose from. How you select the best Mac to buy depends on several factors, including what you need it for and of course, budget. Mac laptops go from $1299 to $2399.

Apple essentially now has six laptops to choose from: MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro (13 and 15 inch screen), and the same 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pro, equipped with a Touch Bar and Touch ID.

Options to consider when buying a Mac laptop

In this Mac buying guide, we cover the merits and downsides of each model, and outline the advantages of each option, depending on how you intend to use your Mac laptop. Here is a rundown of the options:

1. MacBook

First introduced in 2015 and refreshed in 2017, this is the sturdy and reliable MacBook, Apple’s core Mac laptop. Not the cheapest (starting at $1299), but oddly enough, the lightest in the range - even lighter than the MacBook Air.

It comes with four color options: Gold, Silver, Space Grey or Rose Gold. And you can pick from three base models:

1.2GHz dual-core Intel Core m3;

1.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5;

1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i7.

You can either select an 8GB or 16GB memory, with the option of a 256GB or 512GB SSD hard drive, giving you a decent amount of memory and processing power for work, studying and leisure.

One downside with the MacBook is it only comes with one USB-C port for the power charging and data transfer (a new version of a USB that isn’t widespread yet; which will probably mean buying an expensive adapter). It is fast and efficient, with around 10 hours battery life. Not the most powerful Mac laptop in the range, but a sturdy workhorse for the price.

2. MacBook Air

Slim and lightweight, the MacBook Air is ideal for commuters, students and those who need a laptop occasionally, but won’t need to use it all of the time. For those on a budget, this is definitely the best Mac to buy, starting at $999, making it cheaper than the MacBook.

It comes with a 13-inch screen, is only available in silver, and you can pick from two core models (1.8GHz, 128GB, or a 1.8GHz, 256GB); although both only come with 8GB of RAM. However, you can upgrade - at extra cost - to a 2.2GHz processor with 512GB worth of storage.

A few downsides include the fact that it still uses a 2015 model processor, and it isn’t powerful enough for gamers, video editors, vloggers and professional developers. It’s also lacking a future-proof feature, as it doesn't come with a USB-C port. An 11-inch version is now only available second hand, with the newer 13-inch version coming equipped with more connectivity ports than a MacBook and the original smaller Air, including a MagSafe 2, two USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt 2, and an SDXC card slot.

Ideal for those who don't want to carry a heavy laptop, although with it squeezing a similar amount of computing power in a smaller frame, it does weigh somewhat heavier than the more expensive MacBook. Something for students and those on a budget to keep in mind.

3. MacBook Pro: 13 and 15 inch

For working professionals, video producers, designers, developers, and anyone who prefers to use a Mac laptop, the MacBook Pro is the workhorse many know, trust, and would recommend. Equally, gamers also benefit from the speed and processing power contained within the MacBook Pro.

With the MacBook Pro, you get a range of base specs to choose from:

MacBook Pro - 13.3-inch - 2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, or;

MacBook Pro - 13.3-inch - 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor;

MacBook Pro - 15.4-inch - 2.2GHz, 2.5GHz, or 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor.

Memory size options go from a 128GB to 1TB SSD hard drive in the smaller model, with 256GB to 1TB worth of memory in the 15-inch version. Both are available in space grey and silver.

Newer versions of both come with a Touch Bar and Touch ID; although Apple have made significant upgrades in other ways too, which has made some journalists question “whether the 13inch MacBook Pros deserve the 'Pro' name at all.” It is also worth noting that the older, 15-inch version runs on the same processor model as the MacBook and MacBook Air, which means the same physical connectivity options are included: a MagSafe 2, two USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt 2, and an SDXC card slot.

4. MacBook Pro: 13 and 15 inch (with Touch Bar and Touch ID)

As we mentioned above, these new models are worth their own section in this Mac Buyers guide.

In many ways, they're more powerful than the older models that lack the Touch Bar and Touch ID. Apple is taking biometric security seriously, with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor replacing the power button. Both of these features are powered by the Apple T1 chip, combining Apple's Secure Enclave architecture to authenticate biometric data (you’ll also find these on modern iOS devices) and the super-efficient processor from the Series 2 Apple Watch.

With this level of security, the Secure Enclave makes it impossible for third-party apps or malware to gain access to your fingerprint data, and everything your fingerprint protects. Apart from the security benefits, these MacBook Pros come with the following range of spec options:

MacBook Pro - 13.3-inch - 3.1GHz or 3.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor;

MacBook Pro - 13.3-inch - 3.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor;

MacBook Pro - 15.4-inch - 2.8GHz, 2.9GHz, or 3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor.

Memory size options go from a 256GB to a 1TB SSD hard drive, with an impressive 2TB an option in the 15-inch version. Touch Bar models come with four USB-C ports, with one needed for the power cord, and both come with a headphone jack, although they don't have any other physical connectivity options.

Which Mac should I buy?

Even knowing all of the specs, memory options, information on processors, systems and connectivity ports, making a comparison is still not easy. So below, we've considered which is the best Apple laptop from a range of viewpoints, considering how they might be used and who is using them.

Best option for a portable laptop

When it comes to carrying a laptop around, something that will fit into a backpack, shoulder bag, or even mid-to-large handbag, the MacBook is the lightest and most portable. Most would assume - as the name suggests - the MacBook Air, but the 2015 redesign made it heavier and comes with a lower resolution screen.

Unfortunately, you do make some sacrifices for portability, with only one USB-C and, as the cheapest in the range, it is less powerful than other Mac laptops. But for those who want something easy to carry around, light, portable, and cheap, the MacBook beats the others.

Best Mac laptop for students

Students need laptops in classes, lectures and libraries - even when researching online, libraries - many equipped for modern laptops and tablets - are ideal places to work. Students need something portable and cheap - although many can stretch a budget a little further with the Apple education discount - making the MacBook an ideal option.

Although for a little more computing power and something that takes up slightly less space in a bag, the Air is always worth looking at for students. Unless you are taking a computing, games or video course; in which case, neither the Air nor MacBook is an ideal option.

Ideal on a low budget

When price is the deciding factor, you can’t beat the MacBook Air. For those that need a fairly powerful, fairly light device, the 128GB 13-inch Air starts at $999 - compared to $1299 for the next cheapest option, the 256GB 12-inch MacBook. Upgrades to the memory or processor cost more, so if you’re on a budget, think carefully before wanting to customise.

Best for battery life

Although there isn’t a huge amount of difference when it comes to battery life, most Mac laptops come equipped with a minimum of 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing and/or iTunes video streaming.

Beating the others is the “all day battery” that is included in the 13-inch MacBook Air, with 12 hours available before you need to use a charger. However, as any Mac users knows, the older a laptop gets, the weaker it charges and quicker a charge disappears, so it is always useful to have a power cord handy when you are planning to use a Mac laptop for a prolonged period of time.

Need a lot of storage?

Storage is a moveable feast, and something Apple is consistently generous with. Not only can you upgrade all the way to 2TB - with the 15-inch MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar/ID) - but you can use cloud-storage and external hard drives. But when it comes to physical storage you can access directly within a laptop, the 2TB Touch Bar/ID 15-inch Pro beats the others.

Although the good news with Mac laptops is every one of them now comes with SSD memory, which is far more efficient than the memory in older models. It is also less likely to break, since these do not include moving mechanical parts.

Fastest Mac processor

Again, the 15-inch MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar/ID) is the fastest and most powerful. The most expensive customised model will come equipped with a 3.1GHz i7 quad-core processor, which when coupled with 16GB of RAM means it will power through almost any task you can throw at it.

Since the processor is a quad-core, it is significantly more powerful than the others, many of which use dual or m3 processors. Not that the others aren't powerful; they just aren't as powerful as the top-of-the range Pro.

Which is best for work?

This largely depends on the type of work you do. For intensive tasks, then you should opt for the most powerful version you can afford. Combined with generous screen real estate, and that could mean the 15-inch MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar/ID).

But not everyone needs that much screen, or that much processing power and RAM. Others simply connect a laptop to a larger screen, giving them useful portability. If that is the case and you don't need a Mac laptop that could open a hole in the space time continuum, then you could opt for something less powerful and more versatile, such as the MacBook Air. More cost effective too.

We’ve left this option out of the table below, since it largely comes down to personal preference, the type of work involved, whether a device needs to be portable - or not - and budget.

What about for games?

For more intense and involved games, that need the most amount of computing power possible, the 15-inch MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar/ID) is the best option. Although more expensive, it comes equipped with an AMD Radeon Pro 560 graphics card with 4GB VRAM, making it more powerful than some Mac desktops and so-called “dedicated” gaming computers.

If you don't play games that are too intense, or have a lower budget, then the Intel HD Graphics 640 card in the 13-inch MacBook Air is the next best option.

Lenovo Thinkpad P51 Review

Disclosure: I'm a Lenovo Insider, and I participate in Lenovo's customer advocacy program. The P51 Laptop was provided to me by Lenovo for my personal use, no strings attached. Review voluntary, opinions my own.

In the before times, there wasn't WiFi everywhere you went, and being able to bring your computer with you was sort of novel. Laptops back in those days were expensive, and built to last. Back then, they tended to have nice displays, a better keyboard than what you find today, and the ability to do all your personal computing on the go.

I need professional graphics, commercial grade processing power, and I jump between 2-3 operating systems for purposes of testing and preference. It's relatively simple to have all that with a desktop, paired with nice displays, and a premium keyboard. It's very difficult to have that sensation with a portable device, as laptops tend to be manufactured for Ned and Nelly Normalperson, or Billy and Betty Businessperson.

Lenovo’s P51 Thinkpad can do all the things, and I can take it with me.

Okay, scroll down... and, color calibrated, 10-point touch screen! But wait, there's more. You can draw on this screen with an AES stylus from Lenovo or Wacom. Yes. Yes, you can.

Obviously, drawing on screen, if you've acclimated to a tablet, is going to be weird, but I found myself quickly returning to that painting on canvas sort of feel. For doing higher resolution pixel art and landscapes it's become a favored input method because the hinge is very stiff, and I can work keyboard shortcuts while I draw. It's a thing I didn't know I wanted.

For my use case, the P51 is, literally, like taking my desktop with me.

Ports:

I can plug it into basically anything. All the things. The SD card reader is very fast, supporting UHS-II SD cards, at 300 mb/s. I own one of these 'extreme pro' cards but never got to experience how nice they are as my other machines don't have a reader that moves at this speed.

Storage:

Up to 3 drives (two M.2 SSD and one HDD) HDD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high, Active Protection System M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4, 32Gb/s

This is actually better, and more, storage than my desktop. It's kind of a big deal if you use multiple operating systems. It's simpler to drop one, load another, update the bootloader, and go.

Seriously, head to Lenovo's PSREF site, scroll to the bottom of the page, and expand the specifications chart. One can set the P51 up for almost any portable computing experience for commercial and professional purposes.

Here are some things that are not in the PSREF.

The sound from the P51 is like my Thinkpad W530, super good, for a laptop. Headphones for most media consumption are optional. Melodic Death Metal requires headphones, both for audio quality, and the comfort of everyone else at the coffee shop. Moving on.

Linux runs great on it. I run all three hard drive bays and triple boot Windows 10, various flavors of Ubuntu, and various flavors of Fedora. And, yes, the touchscreen, professional GPU, and stylus pen input all work very well. I know, right?

If you want to use a keyboard this nice, you almost have to take a time machine back to the late 1990s and buy what would have been a $4000 laptop from that era. Thinkpads always have a good keyboard relative to everything else in the market, but the P51 is comparably good to everything I've ever used in the mobile computing stratum. Also, fully functional with Linux.

The battery life estimates in the PSREF seem close to the mark. It's significant because they are almost never accurate when subjected to the real world. I was surprised that a machine this powerful could last 6-8 hours depending on the load carried by the GPU.

You can swap the battery out for a spare, by flipping a switch, but spare batteries aren’t cheap. It’s still nice to have the option.

While heavy, the P51 is still pretty portable and I find myself carrying it with me more than I thought I would because of the features it provides. The heft isn't without merit, as it very well made and can take a beating. Thinkpads are famous for being Mil-Spec, but the P51 feels like it was made to both meet and exceed that threshold.

Thinkpad Aesthetics

I've owned a few Thinkpads, including a W-Series with Quadro Graphics. Thinkpads are like the black suit of business electronics. The P51 has all of that, in spite of basically being a brute when set beside most other Thinkpads, particularly X-Series. However, it has a few things many other Thinkpads do not have, that usually ruin the look of a laptop for me, but not in this case.

A lot of the mission critical ports are on the back of the laptop below the hinge. This is another thing I didn't know I wanted. Most peripherals don't have an L-shaped plug, so they stick out the side of your machine, and are generally in the way. This is especially the case if you carry a mouse, drawing tablet, or just have a book or other media laying on the table beside your computer while you work.

Two USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB Type-C / Thunderbolt 3, HDMI 1.4b, Ethernet (RJ-45), and power port are all along the back. They sell mechanical docking options for the P51, but I have no idea why.

Next, while I've already gushed a little about the keyboard, I should also say that I usually hate laptops that have a 10-key. Often, the layout of the keys will be wonky in some way unforgivable, or cramped because of space constraints. Worse, they almost always look like they were designed with the 10-key as an afterthought, just tacked onto a normal laptop keyboard.

Not with the P51, it just feels and looks right.

Bad Stuff

There is some sort of problem with the TPM module.

There does not appear to be a fix as I write this, so if you use software the relies on the TPM module, this is a thing you should know about. I have confidence it won't remain a thing, and that they'll fix it. Not sure when.

Good Stuff

I used the P51 for about four months, over the course of about 550 hours to complete a game development project, the eighth book in my science fiction serial, and several other miscellaneous projects. I used it for games, casual use, and I carried it around with me quite a bit, in spite of the heft. It is that useful.

The purpose of all that was to make sure that when I wrote the review, it would be after I’d really put it through the paces as my primary device. That is, really, what a person would buy this for, to be their one and only. I feel pretty good about recommending it not just for the professional that needs power, but for the prosumer as well.

The P51 is in a rare space where cost versus value is concerned. Because it makes no attempt to be thin and sexy, you aren’t paying a premium for those aesthetics. As I write this, a starting model is about 1300 USD, and you really only need to pay a little extra to upgrade the drives and RAM from there, something that’s easy to do yourself.

If you search “Lenovo P51 upgrade” on YouTube, Lenovo has a pair of videos showing you how to do the upgrades yourself. I added two drives to the machine just to make sure it was something I could recommend to beginners. You will need one of these and one of these if you buy an M.2 SSD drive to add.

All the tech in Ford’s most important vehicle: the 2021 F-150 truck

Ford rolled out all the stops Thursday evening for the reveal of its all-new F-150 truck, right down to the splashy videos dominated by electric guitar riffs. Heck, the automaker even cast the sharp-tongued Denis Leary as its MC.

Of course, none of that really matters. It’s all about what Ford has done to improve the most important and profitable vehicle in its lineup. It’s been six years since the last redesign. This all-new F-150 offers kind of performance and abundance options that Ford truck owners have come to expect. Ford is offering 11 different grille options, for instance.

But what stands out this time is the tech as well as a push beyond mild hybrids into the realm of a full hybrid powertrain.

Here’s all the technology in the new F-150, starting with the interior and specifically the infotainment system.

Control center

The base XL version of the truck will come standard with an 8-inch center touchscreen display. However, on higher trims — XLT and above — the F-150 will have a 12-screen that can be split so that users can control multiple functions simultaneously, including navigation, music or truck features.

Connectivity and OTAs

Who cares if the display is big if it doesn’t have the underlying connectivity to support a host of features? The important aspect to note is the F-150 has a new SYNC 4 system and embedded 4G LTE modem, which can provide Wi Fi access for up to 10 devices. SYNC 4, which has twice the computing power or the previous generation, is going to be standard in all models of the F-150 and will feature natural voice control and real-time mapping. The requisite on-demand audio content offered via SiriusXM will also be available.

The system will also wirelessly connect a smartphone to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The critical new piece here is that system, which was built within Ford instead of outsourced, can support over-the-air software updates. That means the system roll out upgrades to the vehicle such as adding or improving driver assistance features and keeping maps up to date. SYNC 4 will offer third-party apps through its AppLink system, including Waze and a version of Amazon’s Alexa called Ford+Alexa.

Office, bed or dining room?

Ford is clearly aiming for people who spend a lot of time working out of their truck. The new F-150 will come with an optional work surface in the center console area. The surface is designed to be used as a convenient place to sign documents, set up a laptop up to 15-inches in size or park that sandwich. The nifty part is that Ford managed to keep the console shifter. The driver hits the button, it folds into a compartment and makes room for the laptop work area.

Back inside the cab are the sleeper seats, which got a bit of coverage before the big reveal. These “max recline” seats are available in the higher end models like King Ranch, Platinum and Limited and do as advertised: fold flat to nearly 180 degrees.

Hybrid system

Ford is offering its “PowerBoost” system, which refers to the full hybrid powertrain, on trim levels from the F-150 XL to the Limited. The system combines Ford’s 3.5-liter V6 engine and 10-speed transmission with a 35-kilowatt electric motor. This electric motor will use regenerative braking energy capture to help recharge the 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, which is located underneath the truck..

Ford said it’s targeting an EPA-estimated range of about 700 miles on a single tank of gas and will deliver at least 12,000 pounds of available maximum towing.

Power

The truck will also offer an onboard generator called Pro Power Onboard. The feature is available with a 2.0-kilowatt output on optional gas engines. The hybrid F-150 will come standard with 2.4 kilowatts of output or an optional 7.2 kilowatts of output.

Owners can access this power source through outlets located in the cabin as well as up to four 120-volt 20-amp outlets in the cargo. The 7.2 kw power option will include a 240-volt 30-amp outlet. The system will allow for the batteries on tool to charge while the vehicle is moving.

Assistants everywhere

There are so many in here, it’s hard to keep them straight. The driver assistance features are part of Ford’s branded Co-Pilot 360 2.0 system. The important details are that more of these advanced driver assistance features are standard on the base XL trim, including a pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, rearview camera with dynamic hitch assist and auto high-beam headlamps and auto on/off headlamps.

Ford has added (checks notes) 10 new driver-assist features. The most notable one is Active Drive Assist, the hands-free driving feature that Ford plans to roll out via software updates to specific vehicles, including the all-electric Mustang Mach-E in the third quarter of 2021.

The hands-free feature will work on about 100,000 miles of pre-mapped, divided highways in the U.S. and Canada. The monitoring system will include an advanced infrared driver-facing camera that will track eye gaze and head position to ensure drivers are paying attention to the road. The DMS will be used in the hands-free mode and when drivers opt for lane-centering mode, which works on any road with lane lines. Drivers who don’t keep their eyes forward will be notified by visual prompts on their instrument cluster.

Then there’s “Intersection Assist,” which detects oncoming traffic while the driver is attempting a left turn, and “Active Park Assist 2.0,” which handles all steering, shifting, braking and accelerator controls during a parallel or perpendicular parking maneuver while the driver holds down a button.

Finally, there is “Trailer Reverse Guidance” and “Pro Trailer Backup Assist.” Neither are new, but they’re important features for users who haul trailers.

Kano’s latest computer kit for kids doubles down on touch

Learn-to-code startup Kano , whose products aim to turn kids into digital makers, has taken the wraps off the latest incarnation of its build-it-yourself computer kit. With the new flagship Kano is doubling down on touch interactions — urging kids to “make your own tablet”. The Computer Kit Touch packs a 10.1″ HD touchscreen, along with Kano’s now familiar bright orange wireless keyboard which comes with a built in trackpad. While touch is becoming increasingly central to its products, Kano says the keyboard remains an important component of the product — supporting text-based coding apps which its platform also provides access to, as well as the more approachable drag-and-drop block-based coding systems that do really benefit from having a touchscreen to hand. The kit, which Kano says is generally (but not exclusively) aimed at the 6-13 age range, is on sale from today, priced at $279.99 — via its website ( Kano .me ), as well as from selected retailers and e-tailers. The Raspberry Pi powered computer is also getting increased storage capacity in this upgrade — of 16GB. But the main refresh is around updating Kano OS, Kano’s kid-friendly Pi topper, with expanded support for touch controls, according to founder Alex Klein . Last year Kano combined touch and keyboard based interaction into a single product, the Computer Kit Complete — calling that a DIY laptop. The 2018 refreshed version looks much the same, with enhancements generally behind the scenes and/or under the hood. “The big moves this year are advancing the software and content ecosystem,” says Klein. “How it’s all integrated together.” He points to another coding kit the team has up for pre-order, slated to ship next month — a co-branded Harry Potter gizmo in which kids get to build a motion-sensitive “ coding wand ” and use it to cook up their own digital spells, helped along by Kano’s software — adding: “With the Potter kit we’re bringing Kano code — to create a system, the ability to blend and change physics engines and sounds and particle systems — to tablets. So we’ve now got a touch-based interaction model for that e-product, as well as mouse and keyboard, and so we’ve brought that software system now to the Computer Kit Touch. “You can code by dragging and dropping blocks with your fingers, you can paint and draw. You can change the pitch of a loop or a melody by running your fingers up and down and then using a change of a parameter mess with how quickly that melody changes, mess with the number of layers, you can make a beat or a loop using a touch-based digital audio workstation style X-Y plane. You can go into any one of our creative coding apps and pull in touch-based interactions, so instead of just using a mouse, a click and point, you can make an app that responds to swipes and taps, and different speeds, and in different locations.” “On the touch kit itself there’s also a set of new content that demystifies how touchscreens work and peels back the layer of the screen and shows you what’s behind, and you’re kind of touching the intersection of the different copper wires and seeing what’s happening beneath,” he adds. “There’s obviously a big hardware upgrade with the new ability to touch it, to take it with you. We’ve refined a lot of the components, we’ve improved the speed, the battery life. But really the core of it is this upgraded software that integrates with all the other kit.” Talking of other kit, the learn-to-code space is now awash with quasi-educational gizmos , leaving parents in Western markets spoiled for choice of what to buy a budding coder. Many more of these gizmos will be unboxed as we head into the holiday season. And while Kano was something of a startup pioneer here — a category creator, as Klein tells it — there’s now no shortage of tech for kids promising some kind of STEM-based educational benefit. So it’s facing an ever-growing gaggle of competition. Kano’s strategy to stand out in an increasingly contested space is to fix on familiar elements, says Stein — flagging for example the popular game Minecraft — which runs on the Kano kit, and for which there’s a whole subsection of the Kano World community given over to hacking Minecraft . And, well, aside from block-headed Minecraft characters it’s hard to find a character more familiar to children than the fictional wizard Harry Potter. So you can certainly see where Kano’s trying to get with the coding wand. “We broke our first month pre-order target in one day,” he says of that forthcoming e-product (RRP ~$130). “There was massive coverage, massive traffic on our site, it was picked up all over the place and we’re very happy with the pre-orders so far. As are our retail partners.” The Potter co-branding play is certainly Kano trying to make its products cast a wider spell by expanding the appeal of coding from nerdy makers to more mainstream child consumers. But how successful that will be remains to be seen. Not least because we’ve seen this sort of tactic elsewhere in this space. Sphero, for example, is now rolling back the other way — shifting away from Star Wars co-branded bots to a serious education push focused on bringing STEM robotics to schools. (Although Kano would doubtless say a programmable bot that rolls is not the same as a fully fledged kit computer that can run all manner of apps, including familiar and fashionable stuff like Minecraft and YouTube.) “We’re very pleased to see that this category that we created, with that Kickstarter campaign in 2013 — it’s become more than what some people initially feared it would be which was niche, maker ‘arcanery’; and it’s becoming a major consumer phenomenon,” he says. “This notion that people want to make their own technology, learn how to code and play in that way. And not just kids — people of all ages.” On the hard sales front, Klein isn’t breaking out numbers for Potter kit pre-sales at this stage. But says the various incarnations of its main computer kit have shipped ~360,000 units since September 2014. So it’s not Lego (which has also moved into programmable kits) — but it’s not bad either. In recent years Kano has also branched out into offering Internet of Things kits, previewing three code-your-own connected devices in 2016 — and launching Kickstarter campaigns to get the products to market. It’s since shipped one ( the Pixel kit ) but the other two (a build-it-yourself camera kit and a DIY speaker) remain delayed — leaving crowdfunder backers waiting for their hardware. Why the delay? Have Kano’s priorities shifted — perhaps because it’s focusing efforts on cobranded products (like the Potter wand) vs creating more of its own standalone devices? “We are still committed to shipping the speaker kit, the camera kit,” Klein tells TechCrunch. “A big reason for [the delay] is not only the fact that the company is in a position now where we have mass distribution, we have great partners — perennially testing new product ideas — and we want to make sure that products are going to resonate with, not just a small group of people but many, many people, of many different age groups and interests before we release them.” He also points out that any backers of the two devices who want refunds can get them in full. Though he also says some are choosing to wait — adding that Kano remains committed to shipping the devices, and saying for those that do wait there will be a few extra bells and whistles than originally specced out in the crowdfunder campaign. The delay itself looks like the market (and consumer tastes) moving quicker than Kano predicted — and so it finds itself wishing its products could deliver more than it originally planned (but without a wand to wave to instantly achieve that). This is also a pitfall with previewing anything months or years ahead of time, of course. But the expense and complexity of building hardware makes crowdfunding platforms attractive — even for a relatively established brand like Kano. “The delay is really unfortunate,” he adds. “We did say they would ship earlier but what we have done is we’ve offered any backer a full refund on the camera and the speaker if they don’t want to wait. But if they do wait they will receive incredible camera, incredible speaker. Both of them are going to benefit from the advancements made in low cost computing in the last year. “The speaker as well is going to have elements that weren’t even part of the original campaign. On our side it’s critical that we get those products absolutely right and that they feel mass, and that they demystify not only coding and the Internet of Things, which was part of the original purpose, but in the case of the camera and the speaker there are elements that have come to the fore in more recent months like voice interaction and image recognition that we feel if our mandate is to demystify technology and we’re shipping a camera and a speaker… that’s kind of part of it. Make it perfect, make it of the moment. And for any backer who doesn’t want to wait for that, no problem at all — we’ll refund you 100%.” Beyond reworking its approach with those perhaps overly ambitious connected devices, Kano has additional release plans in its pipeline — with Klein mentioning that additional co-branded products will be coming next year. He says Kano is also eyeing expanding into more markets. “There’s a significant market for Kano even beyond our traditional leading position amongst 6-13 year olds in the US and the UK. There’s a really strong market for people who are beyond the US and the UK and we’re now at a scale where we can start really investing in these distribution and localization relationships that have come our way since year one,” he says. And he at least entertains the idea of a future Kano device that does away with a keyboard entirely — and goes all in on touch — when we suggest it. “Would we move to a place where we have no keyboard in a Kano computer? I think it’s very possible,” he says. “It might be a different form factor, it might be smaller, it might fit in your pocket, it might have connectivity — that kind of stuff.” Which sort of sounds like Kano’s thinking about making a DIY smartphone. If so, you heard it here first. The five and a half year old London-based startup is not yet profitable but Klein flags growth he dubs “fast enough” (noting it doubled sales year-over-year last year, a “trend” he says continued in the first half of this year), before adding: “It’s not impossible for us to get to profitability. We have a lot of optionality. But at the moment we are making investments — in software, in team — we have partner products coming out like Harry, we’ll have more coming out next year. So in terms of absolute positive EBITDA not yet but we are profitable on a units basis.” Kano closed a $28M Series B last year — and has raised some $44.5M in all at this stage, according to Crunchbase. Is it raising more funding now? “I think any entrepreneur who is looking to do something big is always in some sense keeping an eye out for sources of capital,” replies Klein. “As well as sources of talent.” He points by way of a connected aside to this study of C-suite execs , carried out by Stripe and Harris poll, which found that access to software developers is a bigger constraint than access to capital, saying: “I read that and I thought that that gap — between the 1% of 1% who can develop software or hardware and the rest of us — is exactly the challenge that Kano set out to solve from a consumer and education perspective.” “In terms of fundraising we do get a lot of inbound, we have great investors at the moment,” he adds. “We do know that the scale of this particular challenge — which is demystify technology, become synonymous with learning to code and making your own computers — that requires significant support and we’ll be continuing to keep our eyes out as we grow.”

Kano’s latest computer kit for kids doubles down on touch

Learn-to-code startup Kano, whose products aim to turn kids into digital makers, has taken the wraps off the latest incarnation of its build-it-yourself computer kit.

With the new flagship Kano is doubling down on touch interactions — urging kids to “make your own tablet”. The Computer Kit Touch packs a 10.1″ HD touchscreen, along with Kano’s now familiar bright orange wireless keyboard which comes with a built in trackpad.

While touch is becoming increasingly central to its products, Kano says the keyboard remains an important component of the product — supporting text-based coding apps which its platform also provides access to, as well as the more approachable drag-and-drop block-based coding systems that do really benefit from having a touchscreen to hand.

The kit, which Kano says is generally (but not exclusively) aimed at the 6-13 age range, is on sale from today, priced at $279.99 — via its website (Kano.me), as well as from selected retailers and e-tailers.

The Raspberry Pi powered computer is also getting increased storage capacity in this upgrade — of 16GB. But the main refresh is around updating Kano OS, Kano’s kid-friendly Pi topper, with expanded support for touch controls, according to founder Alex Klein .

Last year Kano combined touch and keyboard based interaction into a single product, the Computer Kit Complete — calling that a DIY laptop.

The 2018 refreshed version looks much the same, with enhancements generally behind the scenes and/or under the hood.

“The big moves this year are advancing the software and content ecosystem,” says Klein. “How it’s all integrated together.”

He points to another coding kit the team has up for pre-order, slated to ship next month — a co-branded Harry Potter gizmo in which kids get to build a motion-sensitive “coding wand” and use it to cook up their own digital spells, helped along by Kano’s software — adding: “With the Potter kit we’re bringing Kano code — to create a system, the ability to blend and change physics engines and sounds and particle systems — to tablets. So we’ve now got a touch-based interaction model for that e-product, as well as mouse and keyboard, and so we’ve brought that software system now to the Computer Kit Touch.

“You can code by dragging and dropping blocks with your fingers, you can paint and draw. You can change the pitch of a loop or a melody by running your fingers up and down and then using a change of a parameter mess with how quickly that melody changes, mess with the number of layers, you can make a beat or a loop using a touch-based digital audio workstation style X-Y plane. You can go into any one of our creative coding apps and pull in touch-based interactions, so instead of just using a mouse, a click and point, you can make an app that responds to swipes and taps, and different speeds, and in different locations.”

“On the touch kit itself there’s also a set of new content that demystifies how touchscreens work and peels back the layer of the screen and shows you what’s behind, and you’re kind of touching the intersection of the different copper wires and seeing what’s happening beneath,” he adds.

“There’s obviously a big hardware upgrade with the new ability to touch it, to take it with you. We’ve refined a lot of the components, we’ve improved the speed, the battery life. But really the core of it is this upgraded software that integrates with all the other kit.”

Talking of other kit, the learn-to-code space is now awash with quasi-educational gizmos, leaving parents in Western markets spoiled for choice of what to buy a budding coder.

Many more of these gizmos will be unboxed as we head into the holiday season. And while Kano was something of a startup pioneer here — a category creator, as Klein tells it — there’s now no shortage of tech for kids promising some kind of STEM-based educational benefit. So it’s facing an ever-growing gaggle of competition.

Kano’s strategy to stand out in an increasingly contested space is to fix on familiar elements, says Stein — flagging for example the popular game Minecraft — which runs on the Kano kit, and for which there’s a whole subsection of the Kano World community given over to hacking Minecraft.

And, well, aside from block-headed Minecraft characters it’s hard to find a character more familiar to children than the fictional wizard Harry Potter. So you can certainly see where Kano’s trying to get with the coding wand.

“We broke our first month pre-order target in one day,” he says of that forthcoming e-product (RRP ~$130). “There was massive coverage, massive traffic on our site, it was picked up all over the place and we’re very happy with the pre-orders so far. As are our retail partners.”

The Potter co-branding play is certainly Kano trying to make its products cast a wider spell by expanding the appeal of coding from nerdy makers to more mainstream child consumers. How to shop for a computer

Almost a year ago I published this guide on a website called personalcomputershopper.com. Long story short the project didn’t really catch on and I took it down just a few months later. But I still feel that the content is valuable and am preserving it here.

Introduction

Amidst a crowded landscape of desktop, tablet, laptop, and hybrid options, it can be overwhelming to figure what kind of computer best suits your needs. This guide is a resource to help explain personal computing options, break down specifications, and explain in plain language how it all translates to everyday use. Finding the right computer for you is about striking a balance between what you need, what you want, and what you can afford.

Initial considerations

Before you start pricing out computers, stop and ask what you need the computer to be able to do. If you're planning to replace a computer could that computer be upgraded instead?

Do I really need to replace my computer? Can I upgrade what I already have?

Before we begin, it's worth the time to stop and ask this question. (If you're not replacing an existing computer then skip this.)

Are you replacing your computer because the old one died, because it's too old to run the latest software, or because you're just frustrated with how slow it's gotten? If the answer is the latter, and it's not more than a few years old, then consider whether a tuneup and/or upgrade is a better choice than replacement. Here are a few things you can try:

Tune up your computer. I recommend a free program called CCleaner. Once you've installed it take the following actions:

Analyze and sweep out the junk

Go through the list of installed programs and remove anything which isn't needed. If you're unsure about whether something is needed, check online at Should I Remove It?

Go through the list of startup files and disable services which aren't necessary. Be careful here not to disable anything critical like your wireless card or touchpad driver. Look for easy targets instead, like Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher or iTunes Helper. Once they're disabled on startup it might take a couple extra seconds to open these items when you launch them, but that's time you save every time the computer boots up.

Install more memory. RAM is typically the easiest hardware to upgrade in a computer. Go to Crucial.com and use their Advisor tool or System Scanner to analyze your system. They'll let you know what type of memory your computer takes, the maximum amount that can be installed, and the number of open memory banks you have available.

The latter point is important when considering an upgrade - it's much more cost effective to fill an open memory slot than replace an existing chip.

It's also important to note the type of memory installed. DDR3 was the standard for the past several years, and DDR4 is the new standard in computers using Intel's latest CPUs (since around late-2015). Memory prices are low right now, expect to pay approximately $4 to $5 per gigabyte of DDR3 or $5 to $6 per gigabyte of DDR4 RAM. On the other hand DDR2 RAM was phased out several years ago, it has lower capacities, and now costs about considerably more per gigabyte than DDR3 or DDR4. If your computer takes DDR2 RAM then it's a far less cost effective upgrade, and that computer is probably at an age where it's due for replacement anyway.

Upgrade your hard drive to a solid state drive. From a performance standpoint an SSD is the most effective upgrade you can install in your computer. SSDs have lower capacities than traditional hard drives but perform 5-10x faster. That speed translates into dramatic increases in boot time, how quickly applications load, file access and search time. Up until recently an SSD upgrade came at a fairly high cost, but prices have now dropped to the point where most 250 GB SSDs now sell for between $60 and $130. To clone your existing hard drive you'll also need an external hard drive enclosure or USB to SATA cable, either of which cost around $10-$15. Upgrading to an SSD is a little more involved than installing RAM, but very do-able for desktops and most laptops. It's basically just a matter of cloning your disk and then swapping out the part.

In most laptops at least one memory bay and the hard drive are easily accessible by removing a panel on the bottom of the unit, but it's not always the case. I recommend searching online for a copy of the service manual before buying parts to upgrade. And remember, when undertaking any computer upgrade always disconnect the power cord, remove the battery, and touch something metal to discharge any static electricity before touching any internal components.

Do I need a desktop, laptop, or tablet?

Yes.

OK, really, that answer is a little contrite but it's a start. Here's a quick breakdown:

Desktop computers generally offer the most bang for your buck and the most customization options. They can be well suited for resource-intensive applications. They're just not portable.

Laptops offer a complete computer in a portable package. They can be attached to a full size keyboard and monitor at your workstation just like a desktop, and are generally well suited for everyday productivity. Laptops are somewhat more expensive than desktop computers for the same amount of computing power, while being not as customizable, upgradable, or easy to repair as desktop computers.

Tablet computers are generally cheaper and less powerful than either desktops or laptops. They are also the smallest and most portable option. A tablet computer has a touchscreen but no built-in keyboard. In general they are best suited towards web surfing, media consumption, and gaming. Tablets are less well suited for everyday productivity.

There are some variations on the market which blur the lines between categories, such as convertible laptops and all-in-one desktops.

Convertible laptops (sometimes called 2-in-1 laptops) combine the features of a laptop and a tablet. They can be used either like a traditional laptop or as a touchscreen device without the keyboard. The transformation is accomplished by the screen hinging around 360 degrees, pivoting to lay flat against the keyboard, or detaching altogether. Convertible laptops are feature-rich but come at a cost. While they're priced similarly to laptops they typically offer less bang for the buck, and are generally bulkier than a true tablet.

All-in-one desktop computers have their components built in to the display. As a result they're more compact and very well suited for environments where space is at a premium, such as a kiosk, on a kitchen counter, or at the register of a retail establishment. The compromise is that they often use components designed for laptops and thus have the same disadvantages compared to desktops in terms of price, customization options, upgradability, and difficulty to repair.

What operating system should I choose?

Microsoft Windows

Windows is by far the most widely used operating system installed on personal desktop and laptop computers, with a market share around 85 to 90%. Consider it a default option suitable for most uses.

Apple OS X

OS X is the operating system that powers Apple Mac computers, and has roughly 10% market share. People who prefer OS X often cite its refined user experience and simplicity. Macs are particularly popular among artists, musicians, designers, and software developers.

Apple operating systems are closed platforms which are limited to running only on devices manufactured by Apple. OS X only runs on Macs, iOS only runs on iPads and iPhones. And OS X integrates tightly with iOS, so if you use an iPhone and/or iPad there are several ways in which Macs provide seamless transitions between using those devices and using your computer.

Apple devices have a reputation for premium quality and cutting edge design, and their customer service via in-store support is among the best in the industry. Their quality and style comes at a cost though. Macs typically cost at least 50% more than other computers with comparable specifications.

There is a common notion that Macs are more secure than Windows computers. This is true, though not because OS X is inherently more secure. Most malware targets Windows' bigger market. Macs are less frequently targeted but not impervious to malware and threats do exist. Mac owners are well advised to not take security for granted.

It's worth noting that Macs are capable of running Windows in addition to OS X, either via dual booting or third-party virtualization software which enables running both operating systems at the same time. Getting the best of both worlds in this way requires adding the cost of a Windows license on top of the already higher cost of a Mac though.

Generally I advise that you go for a Mac if you strongly prefer the operating system, if the integration with other Apple devices is important to you, if you work in an industry where applications specific to your job are only available for Mac, and if you're comfortable with paying Apple's price premium. If none of those things describe your situation, then you're probably better off getting more bang for your buck with a Windows PC.

Google Chrome

Chrome OS by Google is a minimalist operating system built around the Chrome web browser. Chromebooks (laptops) and Chromeboxes (desktops) offer essentially just that web browser plus access to a few system settings. All applications run inside of Chrome. Some of those applications run offline, but most are dependent on internet connectivity to function.

The main advantages are cost - most Chrome OS computers sell for under $250; and security - since Chrome OS doesn't actually install programs locally they're nearly impervious to malware. The main disadvantage is the inability to install programs locally. If you need your computer to run Microsoft Office or any other local software (not web browser based) then Chrome OS is not the right choice.

Chromebooks and Chromeboxes have become popular options for education and computer lab scenarios. They're great for situations where all you need is a lightweight computer to access the internet. We have a Chromebook that's an ideal everyday kitchen counter laptop at home and occasional travel computer.

Google has been moving towards converging Chrome OS and Android for a couple of years, and it was recently revealed that all Chromebooks launching in 2017 will be compatible with Android apps. While it's yet to be seen how well this is going to work, the implication is that the Chromebooks of the future will also work as de-facto Android tablets.

Tablet and mobile operating systems - iOS, Android, Fire OS, Windows

If you're shopping for a tablet computer the operating system choices are a little different.

iOS is Apple's tablet and mobile operating system, running on iPads and iPhones. As with OS X it is a closed system which is limited to only these devices manufactured by Apple, devices which largely defined the modern tablet and smartphone markets when they were released. iOS integrates tightly with OS X and is also renowned for it's elegance and simplicity. The Apple made devices it runs on are premium hardware and are priced accordingly in the market.

Android is an open source tablet and mobile operating system backed by Google, which runs on devices manufactured by dozens of manufacturers. It is the primary competitor to iOS on tablet and mobile devices, long since surpassing it in market share to become the most widely used operating system on the planet. Android is a much more customizable operating system than iOS, with greater flexibility for users to control the look-and-feel and for applications to access more of the hardware settings and share data with other applications. The Android user experience has come a long way in recent years catching up to iOS, but because many manufacturers overlay custom "skins" and features the end result varies. Fragmentation is a serious issue in the Android ecosystem, and security implications in particular are a cause for concern. From a hardware standpoint, Android devices run the gamut from premium hardware on par with Apple devices down to extremely inexpensive hardware. In general Android devices provide better bang for the buck, and current pricing trends (especially in the smartphone market) are that mid range to high end hardware is rapidly getting cheaper.

Fire OS is a heavily customized version of Android made by Amazon and used on Amazon's Kindle Fire line of tablets. Fire OS does not incorporate Google services, including the Google Play store from which most Android applications are published. As a result, only Android applications listed in the Amazon Appstore can be installed on a Fire device. Fire OS is far less customizable than other Android devices and is largely geared around delivering content from Amazon. Because the hardware is subsidized by Amazon, Fire devices provide better value for the money than most other devices on the market. Other advantages are durability and strong customer support.

Microsoft Windows has been trying and struggling for years to gain a foothold in the tablet and mobile OS marketplaces. According to one report, 2015 was the year that Microsoft "finally got tablets right," estimating that their market share had just surged to 10% and projecting growth to 18% by 2018. Windows tablets can run the same software that runs on Windows desktop and laptop PCs, are are increasingly displacing laptops and desktops at the lower end of the personal computer market. Hardware options run the gamut from less expensive hardware that's priced on par with mid range Android and low end iOS tablets, up to very high end options with the same internal components as higher end PCs that are priced accordingly.

The brain analogy

After you've decided on a type of computer and operating system, then you need to find a computer in that class which can do what you need it to do. I'm a fan of analogies, so here's one which explains core computer components like areas of a brain:

cpu = information processing (Parietal lobe)

graphics = visual processing (Occipital lobe)

ram = short term memory (Frontal lobe)

storage = long term memory (Temporal lobe)

The key when looking at computer specifications is to understand which tasks each of these areas impact and how they translate to your computing needs.

CPU

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the core component that basically determines how smart your computer is. Brainpower and cost are directly related here so it pays to choose wisely. When thinking about how much computing power you need, consider the following:

A low end CPU is all you need to surf the internet, answer email, and store some photos

A mid range CPU does a better job with multitasking, word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, light photo editing or casual gaming.

A high end CPU is necessary if you're planning to use the computer for processing intensive tasks such as database queries, complex spreadsheet calculations, video editing, heavy photo editing, or graphically intense gaming.

When shopping for a CPU you'll find that they're primarily measured in clock speed and cores.

Clock speed determines how fast the CPU can think, and the faster it can think the more quickly it can complete demanding tasks.

Number of cores determines how many tasks the CPU can process at once. Some software, especially more sophisticated and demanding programs, can utilize multiple processing cores simultaneously to spread their workload out and make the most of higher-end CPUs.

The finer points: Other CPU characteristics include cache size, type and amount of memory supported, and integrated graphics capabilities.

The cache is a small amount of memory built directly on the processor die. It helps a CPU think more quickly by reducing the average time needed to access frequently used data.

Type and amount of memory supported determine what kind of and how much RAM (i.e. short term memory) can be installed in the computer.

Integrated graphics capabilities determine how many monitors can be connected, their maximum display resolution, and how well the computer can handle tasks like playing videos games or rendering media.

In mainstream computers the CPU costs between $40 and $450, making it potentially the most expensive part in your computer. The CPU is also anywhere from extremely difficult to impossible to upgrade later. In general it helps to understand how powerful a processor you need right now, but if your budget can support going a step higher in this area that's a wise investment for the long run. Several years down the line a little more powerful processor might help stave off obsolescence a bit longer.

Graphics processor (GPU)

The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) determines how good your computer is at rendering images. For most users the integrated graphics capabilities built in to modern CPUs are more than sufficient. An Intel spokesman was quoted in January 2016 as saying that they "have improved graphics 30 times what they were five years ago" and noting that the integrated graphics inside Intel's 6th generation Core processors can handle three 4K monitors simultaneously. This illustrates the point that for several years mainstream processors have been more than capable of driving multiple displays and playing high definition video. The only reason you might need a discrete graphics card is you have specific applications which require extra graphics processing power, such as video editing, moderate-to-heavy Photoshop use, building a gaming rig, or wanting to hook up a virtual reality headset. Some much higher-end applications such as CAD rendering, medical imaging, and machine learning also make use of GPU acceleration.

On the laptop side of the PC market, there are limited GPU options available - ranging primarily from entry level to mid-range graphics cards, and largely marketed as gaming computers. On the desktop side of the PC market there are myriad options and the sky is the limit for how much graphical oomph (and cost!) you can build in.

Random access memory (RAM)

When shopping for a computer it's important to get a machine with enough memory to handle the tasks you're going to use it for. Having more memory than you need doesn't provide any performance benefit, but having less than you need can severely slow things down. RAM size is equivalent to your computer's short term memory capacity. If it fills up entirely then the computer resorts to page file swaps transferring information to and from disk storage (long term memory) at far slower speeds.

To gauge how much memory you need, think about the applications you run and how much multi-tasking you do. Keep in mind that web browsers can utilize a lot of memory, and the more tabs and windows you keep open the more they use. If you're the type that keeps dozens of browser tabs open so you can go back to them later, you might need a little extra RAM in your computer for that to not slow you down. An easy way to check how much RAM you're using right now is to click Ctrl-Shift-Esc (on a Windows computer) to open the task manager. Check your memory utilization in the performance tab. And if it's at or near 100%, try closing some browser tabs and then check again.

Generally, in 2017 I recommend getting a computer with at least 8 GB of RAM and 16 GB preferred. If your computing needs are light then 4 GB might work, but be wary. Even if the computer you buy has enough memory to run smoothly right now, will it still be enough two or three years down the line? As time goes on software gets increasingly demanding and utilizes more and more memory.

The good news is that in most cases adding more RAM is the easiest thing to upgrade later on down the line. On many laptops there's a panel on the underside which you can open to expose one or both of the memory module ports. Taking out one screw and adding (or replacing) the chip in that slot is pretty much all there is to it. Be aware that this isn't the case on all laptops though - some models are not user-serviceable (i.e. not easily opened up), some have the RAM slots deep inside the machine, and some even have the RAM soldered to the mainboard which makes them impossible to upgrade. If you plan to upgrade the RAM later, verify that's possible before purchasing.

Disk storage

Disk storage is a computer's long term or non-volatile memory. (As opposed to RAM which is called volatile memory because its contents clear out every time the power goes off.) Disk storage retains what's written to it. It's where your operating system and applications are installed, and where your data resides.

Hard disk drives (HDDs) long ago attained capacities far greater than most people need for everyday use. Whether you have a 500 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB hard drive, disk space for normal computer operations will never be a problem. (Media file storage - such as music, videos, or high resolution photos - may be a different story.) So rather than capacity I prefer to focus on performance. While some hard drives are a little faster than others (5,400 RPM models versus 7,200 RPM models), the truly radical jump in performance comes with an upgrade to a solid state drive (SSD).

SSDs utilize a different architecture than HDDs. Rather than a magnetic platter spinning on a ball bearing, an SSD is comprised of NAND flash cells. SSDs have no moving parts, hence the "solid state" moniker. For this reason they also use less energy, generate less noise and heat, and are less susceptible to damage from a physical shock than HDDs. And SSD performance - data read and write speeds - is 5-to-10 times faster than an HDD. Which means the computer boots that much faster, every program loads that much faster, file system searches and opening files happen that much faster, etc., etc.

In this day and age I discourage buying any computer without an SSD, or if you do find a great deal on a machine which only has an HDD then plan to upgrade it to an SSD right away (and turn that HDD into an external hard drive by putting it in an enclosure). It's true that SSDs are still many times more expensive per gigabyte than HDDs, but considering that HDDs are far bigger than you probably need the cost difference between an oversized HDD and a right-sized SSD isn't very much. Go for the smaller, higher-performing solution and either use a high-capacity external hard drive or install a second high-capacity HDD in your desktop for those media files.

I do however recommend not going too small on the SSD. I've seen Windows computers with 128GB SSDs fill up to capacity after a few years of update files piling up, Outlook data stores growing, and remnants left by other software sticking around. It's possible but painful to use disk cleanup utilities to fight a full disk. 256GB SSDs are a marginal step up in price and worth it to save the headache later.

There's also a middle ground called a Solid State Hybrid Drive (or SSHD) which pairs a traditional hard drive with a small (usually 8GB) flash memory cache to accelerate it. SSHDs offer the capacity of an HDD with better performance, at a slightly higher cost. They're nowhere near as high performing as a pure SSD though. If you absolutely need lots of disk storage inside your laptop (not on an external drive), then an SSHD is a viable option to enhance performance over a traditional HDD while maintaining high capacity.

A new cutting edge of SSD technology has begun to appear in higher end laptops and the newest desktop computer mainboards. New M.2 SSDs utilizing a PCI express 3.0 (x4) interface now offer speeds 3-to-7 times faster than top-of-the-line conventional SSDs. The primary reason is because those conventional SSDs use the same SATA form factor and interface as traditional HDDs. The SATA 3 specification maxes out at a 550MB/second transfer rate. Most HDDs only deliver about 60-100MB/second speed, but SATA SSDs have been hitting the limit of the spec on both read and write speeds for quite some time. Current top-of-the-line PCIe SSDs are clocking 3.5GB/second read and 2GB/second write speeds, beginning to approach the 4GB/second maximum of the specification.

The rest of the computer

Since we've covered the core components with the brain analogy, the remainder of this guide will cover the rest of the computer; such as how to shop for a display, how to choose peripherals (keyboards, mice, webcams, etc.), and what the differences are among USB types. While these things aren't as big or expensive a part of the decision as the core computer parts, they ultimately play a big part in your computing experience and should be considered as a part of your overall budgeting and purchasing decision.

What to look for in a monitor or laptop display

Screen size and resolution are the main things to look for in a computer display, though not the only things.

Size is pretty self-explanatory, it's measured diagonally in inches. Most computer monitors and laptop displays now utilize a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. Resolution is quantified by the number of pixels (or dots) on the screen. Higher resolution displays can render a sharper picture, but more to the point they also just simply display more information. More room for information on the screen gives you more room to work, which helps increase productivity.

When shopping, know that higher resolution and/or bigger isn't always better. High resolution displays that are physically smaller will be information dense but text may appear quite small on the screen. If your eyesight isn't well suited to this level of information density then you may be better off with a larger size / lower resolution screen. Or you can compensate by turning text scaling up to make things more readable. It's also worth noting that older versions of Windows (prior to Windows 10) did not do a great job of scaling up to very high resolution screens. This is an area in which Windows 10 has greatly improved and Mac OS X has long performed better.

Laptop display considerations

It's still common to find laptop displays with only 1366 x 768 resolution on the lower end of the market. In mid range and higher laptops 1920 x 1080 is standard. On the high end, there are many with QHD (2560 x 1440), 3200 x 1800, or 4K (3840 x 2160) resolutions available as well. The Microsoft Surface Book offers a 13.5" display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and 3000 x 2000 resolution.

If you're shopping for a MacBook, the current generation MacBook Air offers only 1440 x 900 resolution. All other MacBook models have Retina Displays - the 12" MacBook at 2304 x 1440, the 13" MacBook Pro at 2560 x 1600, and the 15" MacBook Pro at 2880 x 1800. The term Retina Display was invented by Apple to denote a screen with very high pixel density.

There are two main types of laptop displays - glossy and matte. Glossy displays are shinier and colors appear brighter on them. However they reflect more light and are more prone to glare and reflections when used in direct sunlight. Matte screens (sometimes labeled anti-glare) have fewer of these problems though generally aren't as attractive as glossy screens. Windows laptops come in both varieties while MacBooks now are only available with glossy screens.

Another thing to look for in a laptop display is whether it has a touchscreen. This is pretty self-explanatory. For my part I've become accustomed to touch enabled laptops and like the option of interfacing with the computer that way, sometimes my finger is just closer to the screen than it is to the trackpad. Touchscreen displays are always glossy and the option adds some cost. They're now commonly found on mid-range and higher Windows laptops, and also available on a few Chromebook models. MacBooks do not yet offer touchscreens.

No matter what type, size, or resolution your laptop has - remember that you can also hook it up to a computer monitor when working at your desk. with the built in laptop display sitting alongside it as a second screen. Just be sure to compare the display output ports available on the laptop to the inputs on the monitor when planning this setup.

Peripherals - webcams, keyboards, mice

This guide wouldn't be complete without covering the important yet often overlooked peripherals which round out your computing experience.

When it comes to the keyboard and mouse on your desk, many people are content with the cheap keyboard and mouse packaged with a consumer desktop. Or with using the keyboard and trackpad built in to the laptop. There's nothing wrong with these, they get the job done, but there are other options which can provide greater comfort and enhance productivity for power users.

When considering laptops the quality of the built in keyboard and trackpad generally follows the overall expense of the computer; cheaper laptops have poorer input devices, more expensive laptops have better ones. I recommend reading reviews for mentions of how a specific model you're considering performs. Lenovo has a reputation for making some of the best laptop keyboards on their higher end business models but not on their lower end consumer models. Business class laptops from Dell and HP also generally have very good keyboards. And Apple MacBooks have a reputation for good keyboards and best-in-class trackpads. Many mid to high end laptops now also offer backlit keyboards, which is a very nice feature to have. The keyboard on your laptop is not at all upgradable so it's wise to consider this carefully when shopping.

A wireless keyboard and mouse set is a common desktop upgrade. They can be a good option to reduce cord clutter and provide better range of motion, are available at a wide range of price points, and some of the higher end options add additional features and comfort.

For a high end ergonomic option, Microsoft's new Surface Ergonomic Keyboard is garnering some rave reviews.

A mechanical keyboard is another option to consider. This PC World article does a good job of explaining the benefits of a mechanical keyboard. It boils down to durability and a superior typing experience. Mechanical keyboards are expensive though, usually selling for $75 to $200 or more.

"Gaming" keyboards and mice offer nifty lighting features and the ability to program automated keystroke combinations at the push of a button. I put gaming in quotation marks because while the equipment is marketed towards gamers, the functionality can also enhance other productivity.

There's not a lot to say about webcams which are built in to laptop computers. For the most part they're basic quality without much variation in the market. USB webcams for your desktop setup vary widely in quality and features. As with keyboards and mice I'm partial to Logitech products for their quality and reasonable prices. Logitech webcams range from the basic C270 which usually sells for $20 to $30 up to the business focused C930 which offers full high definition video and motion tracking and usually sells for around $100.

Buying guide - where to shop for a computer

The approach I recommend for buying a computer is to first get a general idea of what you need, then decide what your budget is, then try to find the best deal on something that fits. If you're in the market for a desktop PC and have the capacity to build it yourself, that's going to garner the best result in terms of flexibility and price-to-performance ratio, while likely being more reliable than anything you can buy off-the-shelf. In the absence of that here are some suggestions for finding the best deal possible:

Pounce on a sale or coupon

The trend these days is towards flash sales and coupons with extremely limited time periods or quantity caps. The bad news is that a deal you see today could very well be gone tomorrow. The good news is that there's always another deal right around the corner. Doing your homework up front to figure out what you need and are willing to spend can position you to pounce on a great deal once you see it. Here are some places to find those hot deals:

Be aware that that while these sites list many of the best deals out there, not everything they list is a bargain. It's wise to always double-check the price against other sources before pulling the trigger.

Retail stores (online or brick-and-mortar)

The Microsoft Store (both online and physical locations) has emerged in recent years as a top tier place to purchase a computer. Their specialty is the "Microsoft Signature Edition" line of PCs which come free of any the pre-installed bloatware that many manufacturers load up their products with. Microsoft Stores also offer a very good customer service experience, and training and troubleshooting assistance on the products they sell. Their pricing is generally decent, and they get competitive with regular coupon offerings. I don't recommend buying cables or peripherals here, because while the quality of what they offer is generally great their prices on these items are not competitive.

The Apple Store is a good place to buy the latest and greatest Mac, and if you shop their online store you can customize the specifications. The advantage of buying directly through Apple is their selection, customer service and support. Apple typically does not compete on price. If you're hunting for a better deal on a new Mac, a couple of good places to shop are B & H or Adorama. Both often run discounts on new Macs, though be mindful to check whether you're buying the latest model and weigh that against the discount.

Amazon is my go to place for cables, monitors, keyboards, mice, and miscellaneous peripherals. They usually win on price and selection when shopping for these items. Understand though that although Amazon has many great deals available, not everything on there is a good deal. In fact there's a strange regular phenomenon on Amazon where sellers in their marketplace list antiquated technology for sale at absurd prices. Buyer beware. Also, while Amazon is generally great for computer parts and secondary items, it's a very hit-or-miss place to purchase an actual computer. PCs are not their specialty, the specs listed can be spotty, and pricing is all over the place. Again, some good deals are available but be cautious and always compare them to other sellers before purchasing. You can also compare Amazon against itself before buying, through a price tracking website called CamelCamelCamel.

Newegg is another go to place for monitors, peripherals, and computer parts. It also can be a very good place to shop for a computer, as their search function typically does a very good job of filtering specifications and their descriptions do a good job of listing what's under the hood. Newegg is generally competitive with their day-to-day pricing and very competitive with their coupon codes and sale pricing, which you can find (or sign up to get via email) here.

Micro Center is the only remaining brick-and-mortar computer parts retail chain in the U.S. It is a great place to buy components, monitors, and various accessories. It's a decent place to buy computers themselves and they offer the benefit of having a competent service department. Be aware though that Micro Center's floor sales staff is not always highly knowledgeable, and they work on a commission or incentive structure. Sometimes I get the impression that they try to steer customers towards certain products which are in their interest to sell more of. My observation is that Micro Center's prices can generally be hit or miss. Some of their in-store only computer component deals (such as Intel processors) are by far the best pricing available anywhere. Advertised prices are generally very competitive. But their pricing on some other items can be on the high side. Overall I recommend shopping there when building a computer, and can accept that a little higher price on some components is both the cost of convenience and offset by lower prices on other components.

I don't typically recommend buying a computer at a retail chain which doesn't specialize in this area, but Costco is an exception. My observation is that their prices are moderate, not the best but also not outrageous. Where they shine however is that every computer they sell comes with Costco Concierge Services, which extends the warranty to a 2nd year and provides free technical support by phone. Taking advantage of this does require being a Costco member, but it's a solid option for non-technical computer shoppers in particular.

Refurbished, used, and closeouts

Shopping for a pre-owned computer can be a high-risk high-reward proposition. I have some experience buying refurbished equipment. I've never had any issue with a refurbished computer monitor, but have seen a fair number of issues with refurbished PCs. I've also seen some fantastic deals on them, typically priced on the low end of the market for high end computers that are a few years old. If you do choose to shop for a refurb, make sure you check the warranty period up front and test the machine thoroughly after receiving it. And only ever buy from reputable sources.

Closeout models are a lower-risk proposition but don't always have as much of an upside. The latest model computers go on sale too, just maybe not as often or as sharply as the older models. So shop around and weigh the price against both the age of the computer and how much comparable computers of the latest generation are going for.

eBay -- Sometimes major retailers use eBay to clear out quantities of older or refurbished equipment, often at great prices. Aside that be careful to only buy from reputable sellers here.

The market for refurbished Macs is a little different. Due to initial cost and quality their resale life stretches on longer. And as a result there are several shops out there who make a business of buying, refurbishing, and selling used Macs. If you go this route make sure that the seller is reputable, check their warranty policy, and look to see if they're upgrading the memory and hard drive. A few reputable places to shop for a used Mac are:

Where not to shop for a computer

Best Buy. Their prices on bigger ticket items like computers and monitors might not be bad, but their markup on cables and small accessories is hideous, and their Geek Squad Goon Squad service department has a lengthy and well documented history of customer nightmare stories. Including mine. Shop there if you want to, but steer clear of their extended warranties and do not trust their service department.

Craigslist or any public classified ad. Most people selling goods through classified ads or sites like Craigslist are legitimate sellers, but they often don't understand how quickly computers depreciate and thus tend to overestimate the value of their used computer. So there are a lot of not-very-good deals advertised out there. And sometimes there are deals listed which just seem too good to be true, and sometimes those are - the computer might be stolen or you might be walking in to a dangerous situation. If you do choose to shop for a used computer from a stranger, compare the price that the seller is asking against an advanced eBay search for Sold listings of the same or a comparable machine. Ask them questions about where they got the computer and ask them to provide proof of ownership - if they balk or try to brush your questions off, walk away immediately. And if you do buy from them, meet at a Craigslist Safe Zone or well-lit public location.

Retail stores that don't specialize in computers generally aren't a great place to buy a computer. Their employees typically aren't very knowledgeable, prices tend to be moderately high, and cable and small accessory prices tend to be extremely high. Some of the stores which fit this profile are Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, Kmart, and Radio Shack. Big box office supply stores such as Staples and Office Depot are a small step up. In a pinch I would prefer them to the alternatives, but not as a first option.
