The Commander of Men
Tumblr media
Imagine if Robb Stark had been trained to his full potential.
Robb might not have been born into The Madness, but he grew up in a Winterfell that was doing everything in its power to prepare for the Long Night. He and Jon (and the other Stark kids, for that matter) had a lot less free time than their canon counterparts because their (important) lessons were longer and more intense. He learned warging from Brynden Bloodraven, the basics of magic from Archmaester Marwyn, and strategy from the texts Maester Luwin assigned him. His teachers noted his talent for war stratagems at an early age, and they’ve done their best to encourage that.
Not all of Robb’s tutors are still alive. Robb was the first of Eddard and Catelyn’s children who could see the many ghosts of Winterfell even when they aren’t manifested. Cregan Stark in particular has taken a liking to him and is trying teach him politics (Rhaegar and Elia help with this when they visit). Other ghosts teach him history and go over strategies with him, further honing his skill. Sometimes, though, he gets kind of overwhelmed by his ancestors’ expectations. When this happens, he goes to the training yard for a few hours.
When Theon arrived, Robb was fascinated by the older boy and completely befuddled at his reactions to commonplace things. “What do you mean you’ve never seen a talking tree before?” Theon was his first real exposure to a world that didn’t believe in the things he experienced every day, his first indication that Winterfell wasn’t exactly normal.
On Robb’s twelfth nameday, Jon pulled him aside to show him a dragon egg and tell him a story. Robb was stunned. When he recovered, though, he vowed that he’d put Jon on the throne if his brother ever wished it.
Ned and Cat weren’t particularly happy about Jon telling anyone, but they eventually agreed that their children could be let in on the secret when they turned twelve. It’s hard to resist the combined power of Jon Snow and Robb Stark’s puppy-dog eyes. (If only they could find some way of weaponizing it against the Others....)
A couple years later, Grey Wind was born. Until that point, Robb had been a rather mediocre skinchanger who trained on the ‘public use’ ravens. With a direwolf by his side, however, his abilities flourished.
Robb sometimes travels with his father. Other times he stays home and learns to rule. He might need to do either (or both) when the Long Night comes.
