Canadian Immigration Minister Contemplates Cap on Foreign Students Amid Housing

In the context of the rising housing crisis in Canada, Immigration Minister Marc Miller
announced on Saturday that the Canadian government is considering the prospect of imposing
a cap on the number of foreign students residing in the country. The move comes in response to

In an interview, Miller explained the delay in considering a cap, stating that federal data needs
to be thoroughly examined before taking a more nuanced approach. He acknowledged that the
government must scrutinise specific academic institutions across provinces to assess their role
in attracting foreign students and potentially profiting from the situation.
The minister emphasised the importance of ensuring financial capabilities, proper verification of
offer letters, and initiating a comprehensive conversation about the impact of student volumes in
various areas.
Miller clarified that any potential quota on foreign students would not be a universal solution to
Canada's housing crisis. Housing, he noted, is just one facet of the broader immigration targets.
Miller emphasised the urgency of considering the significant gap between the number of foreign
students entering Canada and the federal government's plans for home construction assistance.
He stressed the need to address the pressing requirement of lowering the average age of the
workforce.
While the details are still under consideration, Miller affirmed that the federal government will
continue exploring the possibility of imposing a cap on international students. The nuanced
approach reflects a recognition of the multifaceted challenges Canada faces, ensuring that any
proposed solution aligns with the complex dynamics of the housing crisis and broader
immigration goals. With these growing challenges for Indian students, educational courses in

Latest Google Updates: Release of Gemini AI
Last month, it was reported that Google Drive for desktop had a sync issue which resulted in
the disappearance of files that were months or even years old. In the latest version of Drive
for desktop app (version 85.0.13.0 or higher), you'll be able to access a file recovery tool via
a few steps: go to the menu bar or system tray, click the Drive for desktop icon, press and
hold the "Shift" key and click "Settings," and then you'll be able to hit "Recover from
backups."
From there, you should see a notification saying "Recovery has started," and hopefully you'll
get a "Recovery is complete" message after a while. You'll then find a new folder named
"Google Drive Recovery" containing the unsynced files on your desktop.
"If you’ve tried to run the recovery tool and are experiencing issues, submit feedback through
the Drive for desktop app with the hashtag '#DFD84' and make sure to check the box to
include diagnostic logs," the company said on the support page. There are also instructions
for those who prefer trying with command line interface, Windows backup and Time
Machine backup.
Along with this update google has announced its new AI model, Gemini. This model is
designed to behave in human-like ways, better that what other models can achieve. Gemini is
a new artificial intelligence model that outperforms other models in tasks like understanding,
summarizing, reasoning, coding, and planning. It comes in three versions: Pro, Ultra, and
Nano. The Pro version is already available, and the Ultra version will be released early next
year.
Gemini is a large language model (LLM) developed by Google’s DeepMind division. It’s
designed to compete with other AI systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and possibly outperform
them.
Currently, Google has integrated the new Gemini Pro with its chatbot Bard which is a direct
competitor of ChatGPT. You can have a text-based interaction with Gemini-powered Bard
but Google has promised support for other modalities "soon". The new update is available in
170 countries and territories but it is limited to English.\

Xiaomi Unveils SU7: A Porsche Taycan Rival with Ambitious Goals
Xiaomi, the Chinese consumer electronics giant, has officially unveiled its inaugural electric car, the SU7, poised to compete with the likes of the Porsche Taycan. This announcement comes 1,003 days after Xiaomi’s initial declaration of venturing into the electric vehicle sector in 2021, backed by an initial investment of RMB10 billion (£1.1 billion) and plans for an additional RMB70 billion (£7.8bn) over the next decade.
Setting Lofty Goals
During the unveiling in Shanghai, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun articulated the company’s ambitious aspirations. Jun declared Xiaomi’s intent to become one of the world’s top five automakers within the next 15 to 20 years. He emphasised the company’s mission to rival esteemed brands like Porsche and Tesla, envisioning the SU7 as a dream car for the new era of the automotive industry.
Innovative Electric Architecture
The SU7 stands on Xiaomi’s new electric car platform, internally known as Modena, designed to accommodate both 400-volt and 800-volt electric architectures. With plans for a range of models, including an SUV, Xiaomi aims to make a mark not only in the electric car market but as a key player in automotive innovation.
Under the leadership of Xiaomi’s head of design, Sawyer Li, the SU7 boasts sleek lines, contributing to a remarkable drag coefficient of just 0.195. Surpassing the Porsche Taycan in length, width, and height, the SU7 offers a longer wheelbase, providing ample space and aerodynamic efficiency.
Proprietary Electric Motors
Powering the SU7 are Xiaomi’s in-house developed electric motors: the V6, V6s, and V8s. Ranging from 295bhp to a staggering 670bhp, these motors cater to different variants of the SU7, offering varying performance levels. Notably, the dual-motor SU7 model combines two motors for an impressive output of 664bhp and a rapid 0-62mph time of 2.78 seconds.
At its core sits a CATL-supplied lithium-ion battery. This battery boasts 101kWh energy capacity, giving the SU7 a range of over 497 miles. Xiaomi’s innovative battery technology supports ultra-rapid charging, with claims of gaining 137 miles in a five-minute charge and 317 miles in a 15-minute charge.
Future Prospects
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun revealed that prototype versions of the SU7’s motor achieved up to 35,000rpm in testing, hinting at the potential for even more powerful iterations in the future. Xiaomi’s strategic approach to electric vehicles involves continuous innovation and pushing the boundaries of technological possibilities.
