Redefining Business Leadership: Rising Tide of Empathetic
Leadership
In the ever-evolving landscape of business, effective leadership plays a critical role in determining an organisation's success. Gone are the days when leadership solely revolved around authority and control. With control being the cornerstone of leadership in the yesteryears, things have changed in the present day.
Today, a new trend is emerging—a shift towards efficient business leadership that combines crisp decision-making with a unique focus on empathy. This article explores the growing significance of empathetic efficiency and its impact on organisational growth and employee well-being.
The Changing Paradigm of Leadership
'Traditionally, leadership was often associated with a command-and-control style, where decisions were made from the top-down. However, as businesses become more complex and interconnected, this approach proved inadequate. Today's leaders must navigate an intricate web of stakeholders, including employees, customers, shareholders. and the wider community.
In this dynamic environment, a new kind of leadership is emerging. one that prioritises empathy and efficiency in equal measure.
Efficiency: Streamlining for Success
Efficiency has long been a hallmark of effective business leadership. It involves optimising processes, resources, and time to achieve maximum output with minimum waste. In today's fast-paced and competitive world, efficiency is paramount for organisations to remain agile and innovative. However, efficiency alone can lead to a cold and mechanistic approach that disregards the human element.
The Road Ahead
The shift towards empathetic efficiency in business leadership is not just a passing trend but a fundamental transformation. As societal values evolve, stakeholders increasingly demand leaders who demonstrate authenticity, transparency, and empathy. Organisations that embrace this change will gain a competitive edge in attracting top talent, fostering innovation. and building a positive brand reputation.
To cultivate empathetic efficiency, leaders must invest in their own personal growth and development. They can seek out mentorship. attend leadership programs, and engage in continuous learning. Building self-awareness and emotional intelligence enables leaders to better understand their own biases and strengths, promoting fair decision-making and effective Collaboration.
The Bottom Line
In this era of rapid technological advancements and global interconnectedness, the need for empathetic efficiency has become even more critical. As automation and artificial intelligence continue to reshape the business landscape, leaders must find the delicate balance between leveraging these tools for increased efficiency and maintaining the human touch that fosters
connection and collaboration.
Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of empathetic efficiency.
As organisations faced unprecedented challenges, leaders who demonstrated empathy and adaptability were better equipped to navigate the crisis, support their teams, and find innovative Solutions.
In conclusion, the rise of empathetic efficiency signals a transformative shift in business leadership. By combining the power of empathy with the drive for efficiency, leaders can create thriving organisations that prioritise both people and results. As we embrace this unique approach, we unlock the full potential of our teams, foster innovation, and build a sustainable
future for businesses and communities alike.

Global Urgency: WHO Calls for Unified Action Against Potential & Disease X Pandemic
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has sounded a global alarm regarding the looming threat of a potential new pandemic known as 'Disease X.' WHO's Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, stressed the critical need for international collaboration to combat this hypothetical but potentially devastating health crisis. The call for action comes as Disease X is speculated to be 20 times deadlier than COVID-19, as reported by Fox News. A Global Response: Urgent Plea for a Pandemic Treaty Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ghebreyesus urged countries worldwide to unite and endorse a 'pandemic treaty' by May, emphasising the importance of preparing for unforeseen health threats. In addressing the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, he underscored the necessity of a flexible system capable of expanding promptly to meet escalating demands.Ghebreyesus emphasised the existence of unknown factors that might unfold, stating that occurrences are a question of when, not if. He highlighted the necessity of having a placeholder for unforeseen diseases, underscoring the importance of preparedness for unknown health threats. The WHO has taken proactive measures in anticipation of potential outbreaks, establishing a pandemic fund and creating a "technology transfer hub" in South Africa. Ghebreyesus also highlighted the issue of vaccine equity, pointing out the problem of high-income countries hoarding vaccines. To address this, the WHO has set up an mRNA technology transfer hub in South Africa, aiming to enhance local vaccine production and ensure fair distribution. Unveiling 'Disease X': A Potential Global Health Crisis Disease X is not a specific disease but rather the potential emergence of a virus akin to COVID- 19, representing an unknown pathogen with the potential to cause a serious international epidemic. Categorised by the WHO among potential threats like Ebola, Lassa fever, MERS, Nipah, and Zika, Disease X poses a unique challenge due to its unpredictable nature. Introduced formally by the WHO in 2018, Disease X serves as a placeholder for the next unknown disease of epidemic potential. A WHO report from November 2022 highlights the difficulty in addressing numerous potential pathogens with limited resources for research and development, emphasising the urgent need for global preparedness.

Indonesia`s Tourism Boost: A Paradigm Shift in Visa Policy
In a strategic move to bolster its standing as a premier global tourist destination, Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, has unveiled a groundbreaking change in its visa policy. Effective December 20, the country introduced a five-year visa policy, allowing visitors to stay for a maximum of 60 days, a significant departure from the conventional 30-day single-entry tourist visa. Online Application and Payment Convenience A notable aspect of this policy is the facilitation of online applications, coupled with the convenience of credit card payments. This streamlined entry process is poised to make Indonesia more accessible to foreigners. Immigration Chief Silmy Karim highlighted that the extended duration and multiple entries are integral components of the government's holistic efforts to stimulate economic growth. Competing Effectively in the Global Tourism Arena Indonesia's decision to extend visa durations aligns with its ambitions to compete more effectively with neighboring tourist destinations. The previous 30-day tourist visa, extendable by an additional 30 days, posed limitations for those seeking prolonged stays or multiple entries. The new policy not only caters to these preferences but also aims to make Indonesia a more attractive option for international tourists. Ambitious Targets Amidst Tough Competition As of December 8, Indonesia had already welcomed nearly 10 million foreign tourists, surpassing the initial target of 8.5 million for the year. Despite this accomplishment, Indonesia still trails behind neighboring nations such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam in overall tourist arrivals. To address this gap, the country has set an ambitious target of attracting 40 million foreign tourists by 2025. In the fiercely competitive landscape of global tourism, neighboring countries are actively revising their visa policies to attract visitors, especially from emerging markets like China and India. By offering more flexibility and easing entry requirements, these nations aim to position themselves as prime destinations for international travelers. Therefore, Indonesia's recent visa policy signifies a bold step toward fostering economic growth through tourism. By extending visa durations and facilitating online applications, the country aims to position itself as a more accessible and attractive destination on the global tourism map, competing head-to-head with its regional counterparts.

In response to growing financial pressures, the University of York has instructed its staff to take a "more flexible approach" to admitting international students who may fall short of expected grades. This decision reflects the university's strategic response to the evolving landscape of higher education in the UK, where institutions are grappling with recruitment challenges and financial strains. The Russell Group university conveyed this policy shift through an email, stating that it has decided to lower the entry requirements, or "tariff," for overseas applicants across all departments and programs. Although the typical undergraduate offer at York requires A grades at A-level, the university will now consider admitting international applicants with the equivalent of B or C at A-level. Similarly, entry to postgraduate courses would now necessitate a 2:2 award or similar, rather than a 2:1. A spokesperson for the University of York emphasised that this adjustment aligns international student admissions with the flexible approach already in place for UK students. This move aims to address the financial challenges faced by British universities, particularly in light of frozen tuition fees for domestic students since 2016 in England and funding cuts for universities in Scotland. Challenges in Recruiting International Students and Financial Implications for Universities The shift in admissions policies at the University of York is indicative of broader challenges faced by UK universities in recruiting international students. With income from lucrative international student fees playing a vital role, universities are under pressure due to government policies and increased competition from countries like Canada and Australia. Russell Group universities, including York, note a financial strain, with an average loss of about £2,500 in teaching UK undergraduates. In response, numerous universities have sought to offset these financial challenges by bolstering the enrollment of international students. This strategic approach is driven by the fact that the fees for international students are not subject to caps and can surpass domestic fees by a considerable margin. This strategic shift is evident in financial statements, such as University College London's tuition fee income increasing by 17% in 2022- 23, primarily driven by growth in the full-time international student base. While some universities, like the University of Liverpool, have successfully expanded their international student intake, institutions relying more on UK students, like the Open University, have experienced financial setbacks. The Open University recorded an operating deficit of £25m last year, citing a reversal in the growth of student numbers due to the cost of living crisis and
post-pandemic student behaviours. The university anticipates a further decline in student numbers this year.

Canadian Immigration Minister Contemplates Cap on Foreign Students Amid Housing Crisis
In the context of the rising housing crisis in Canada, Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced on Saturday that the Canadian government is considering the prospect of imposing a cap on the number of foreign students residing in the country. The move comes in response to Canada's mounting housing problem and rising unemployment. While the minister did not specify the extent of the potential reduction in immigration, he emphasised the need for collaboration between the federal and provincial governments to rein in the overwhelming influx of international students. Miller expressed concerns about the current volume, describing it as "disconcerting" and characterising the system as having "gotten out of control." Analysing Impact and Timing: Sorting Data Before Imposing Caps In an interview, Miller explained the delay in considering a cap, stating that federal data needs to be thoroughly examined before taking a more nuanced approach. He acknowledged that the government must scrutinise specific academic institutions across provinces to assess their role in attracting foreign students and potentially profiting from the situation. The minister emphasised the importance of ensuring financial capabilities, proper verification of offer letters, and initiating a comprehensive conversation about the impact of student volumes in various areas. Miller clarified that any potential quota on foreign students would not be a universal solution to Canada's housing crisis. Housing, he noted, is just one facet of the broader immigration targets. Miller emphasised the urgency of considering the significant gap between the number of foreign students entering Canada and the federal government's plans for home construction assistance. He stressed the need to address the pressing requirement of lowering the average age of the workforce. While the details are still under consideration, Miller affirmed that the federal government will continue exploring the possibility of imposing a cap on international students. The nuanced approach reflects a recognition of the multifaceted challenges Canada faces, ensuring that any proposed solution aligns with the complex dynamics of the housing crisis and broader immigration goals. With these growing challenges for Indian students, educational courses in other countries like the UK, Germany, and France are quickly gaining traction, becoming favourable alternatives to Canada.
