There are many reasons why “Ellie” is one of my favorite episodes of The West Wing, but the main one is because it shows how being a father to daughters requires a sort of gentleness that Bartlet realizes he has to have. He can’t be a stern and dominant force like he can when talking to his staff. He’s reminded that Ellie as a child sensed a favoritism Bartlet for her other sisters, and is a recluse towards him because of it. I just love how its one of the only episodes that portrays the dynamics of a father/daughter relationship.

A new day means another west wing fic that I've written for @twwpride.

Day two's prompt was Found Family and/or Distance.

This fic covers both exploring the off screen life of one of my favorite characters we don't get to see nearly enough, Ellie Bartlet. I've always empathized with her, especially her semi-strained relationship with her family of origin. I got to thinking about the snapshots of her we do get to see, particularly the moment in "Eppur Si Muove " where she and Jed are in the kitchen. The disconnect in understanding there was painfully familiar for me. Combining that strained relationship with the general assumption both from the audience (at the time and now) and The Bartlet's that Ellie was gay, i was drawn to consider what her life looked like beyond the edges of our screens.

As soon as I asked the question, her whole life unfolded before me. A girlfriend named Piper well on her way to Ph.D. in Literature. Someone who gave her space to unpack the pressure of her life, someone who would hold her in the moments over overwhelming anxiety and encourage her in ways I'm not sure she got all the time. Someone to smooth the edges. Basically someone who would love her the way she deserves to be loved.

okay, so i'm def adding coyote and payback when i have time this weekend! if you wanna bounce around ideas or plot out something pre-established, hmu on disco. here are the vibes so far:

coyote - older brother with a sister six to ten years younger; prestigious military family, chooses the naval academy as a bit of middle finger to them and to set himself apart (possibly a d1 athlete too), a bit of a golden boy, confidence well earned and proven

payback - has a 5 or 6-year-old daughter named ellie; married his high school sweetheart during flight school (whose possibly a teacher or something like that?); joined the navy so he could afford college but didn't consider being a pilot till instructors kept suggesting it; loves the daggers, but occasionally feels like the odd one out (wishes they knew there's more to live for sort of thing); will talk your ear off about his daughter if the opportunity allows

This is a recent favorite, I read it on a plane and cried in what is probably my most embarrassing fic reading experience to date. Mikayla is a marvel, and I love all of the characterization and interactions in this fic.

2) Do you have a favorite character to write? Favorite ship(s) to write? Are there characters or ships you'd like to write more of?

My favorite ship to write is absolutely CJ/Toby, but the fact that I’ve only written one J/D fic is a crime because I really do love them so much. I need to write more for them this year, that’s my personal goal. As for characters, I probably write CJ the most so it’s fairly obvious she’s my favorite. Josh and Donna are very, very fun to write, though, because their voices are so distinct and clear in my head. I need to start writing more characters into my fics— I especially love writing Andy and Charlie.

3) Tell us about your writing process (setup/location? Night or day? Snacks/beverages? Computer/phone/notebook? Music or silence? Anything else you want to share is welcome!)

My writing process varies depending on my inspiration levels, like if it’s an idea I can’t get out of my head, I’ll write the first couple hundred words on my phone and switch to my computer later. I write on my phone often but honestly, writing on my computer is infinitely better. I usually end up writing at night because that’s usually when I have time, and I love listening to music but I find that I usually forget to put it on and then can’t bring myself to make any changes once I’ve started writing.

4) What writing advice do you have for others who may be reading this?

Honestly, just write bad fics. I still consider myself a very new writer, so I don't know how qualified I am to give advice, but I think writing should be fun, not a source of anxiety. Don't expect everything you write to be good, especially when you start. Half of what I write is never going to be seen by anyone but myself, and that’s perfectly okay. Also, have a doc that functions as scrap paper, almost. It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds— when you have an idea or a line you can’t get out of your head, write it there and you’re way more likely to use it later. Someone gave me that advice last year and it’s honestly made me write so much more.

5) From where do you usually draw your inspiration? (Other forms of media, music, tropes, etc?)

I draw my inspiration from you guys, honestly. Everyone in this fandom has a million good ideas a day, and that’s probably what inspires me the most frequently. I’m definitely inspired by movies and other media as well, especially for AU ideas.

6) What is the fic you've written that you're most proud of and why?

I’m most proud of engraved upon my heart (in letters deeply worn) https://archiveofourown.org/works/27139615 or shout if you want my heart (it’s an open invitation) https://archiveofourown.org/works/34041280 because the first is my only J/D fic to date and it’s just so cute. They’re so adorable and perfect, and it always makes me happy to reread that fic. The second fic was a CJ/Toby prompt fill, I wrote it so fast after not writing for months and I’m just proud of the writing in that one.

7) What's the fic trope/concept/AU you'd read 1000 of? What's the fic trope/concept/AU you'd write 1000 of?

Oh, this is hard. Off the top of my head, I’d read 1000 post-canon AUs of either J/D or CJ/Toby. I’d also write 1000 of those, if I’m being perfectly honest. Also, I’d write thousands of canon divergence AUs— the fact that I have two separate AUs that involve CJ getting shot during TWW canon says something about me and I don't know if it’s good.

8) Is there anything you'd like to try writing-wise that you haven't yet?

There’s so, so much! I want to try writing more J/D, I want to write more ensemble found family dynamics, I want to actually finish and post a fic above 15k words (my royalty AU is double that, but it doesn’t count because my brain will not let me finish it.) I also really want to write an Outsider POV fic because I think the show lends itself so well to that.

9) What's your go-to Starbucks/coffee shop/other drink order?

I’m not a big coffee person so I usually end up getting the Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino or the Mango Dragonfruit Refresher.

10) Do you have any current projects you'd like to promote or anything upcoming you'd like to tell us about?

I’m currently working on my August BBOC fic, hopefully teasing it here will force me to finish it in the three days I have left. Also, perpetually announcing the royalty au I’ve been writing for years that I have made little to no progress on recently. It's my pride and joy, finally passed 30k, and I really need to finish it.

It would either be Zoey/Charlie, because they are just my favorites ever and have so much potential, or Jed/Leo/Abbey because they are my entire life.

From @mlea7675: What drew you to CJ/Toby in particular?

I love this question so much, even though I have no way to answer it. I would probably say their palpable chemistry, and the way they are intrinsically drawn to each other in every scene. They’re each other’s person, which makes their love so interesting and complicated.

From @jessbakescakes: Which fic of yours did you have the most fun writing?

Ooh, probably my J/D post-canon AU, engraved upon my heart (in letters deeply worn) https://archiveofourown.org/works/27139615. I loved figuring out where every character would be years after the show ended, thinking about their kid’s names, and coming up with ideas for other fics revolving around Seaborn for America.

From @S4MWILSON: what draws u to ur fave ships ? any upcoming work ur excited about ? craziest au you've imagined ? which fic of yours are you most proud of ? fave tww rarepair ? fave things about the show / the fandom ? are there any tropes or motifs that u like to use when writing ?

These questions are so good! The craziest AU I’ve imagined is probably the Much Ado About Nothing AU I dream about writing because like. It makes no sense but it is everything to me. My favorite TWW rarepair is Mallory/Ellie, my queer political daughter OTP. I have so many thoughts about them, it’s insane. My favorite things about the show are the found family aspect, the complexities of every character, and literally everything else. I love this fandom because everyone is supportive, kind, and so talented. I’m so happy to know all of you.

"Hi, Macca!" You grinned, rushing into the Keeper's waiting arms. "I missed you!"

"I've missed you too, kid," she smiled, squeezing you tightly. "How's Spain treatin' you?"

"Good."

"What about me?" Alanna questioned. "I haven't seen you in a while too, y'know."

"Oh, hi Lani," you patted the defender on the shoulder. "Didn't see you there."

"You're so mean," the cityzen feigned hurt, all too familiar with your playful antics. "Kyra said to go and meet her and Charli in her room. They need you for something. Probably a prank."

"Alright," you gave her and Mac fist-bumps as you walked past. "If I turn up dead tomorrow, you know what happened."

"Hey, Ky, hey Char," you greeted, eyebrows raised as you followed Kyra into the room. "What was it you needed?"

"Y/N, perfect," Charli was suspiciously gleeful. "We've got some Tim Tams that we need eaten, but Ky and I have already had too many. You mind finishing them for us?"

"Sure," you agreed instantly, never one to deny a Tim Tam (even if it was way too early in the morning. "I'm down."

In short, you consumed three whole packets of Tim Tams. Kyra and Charli had shared a look, the former getting up and grabbing a coffee from otherwise empty desk. "You look kinda tired. Have some coffee, it'll help you get through the jetlag for now."

You hadn't thought much of it, so you'd graciously accepted it and finished it within the hour.

"Y/N! Kyra! Charli!" Lydia's voice called through the door, followed by a couple of knocks. "We've gotta head to training! Get ready to go!"

You rolled your eyes, much to Kyra and Charli's amusement. "Yes, mum!"

"MINIMINIMINIMINIMINIMINI!" you practically yelled, barreling towards the surprised Midfielder excitedly. "LOOKLOOKLOOKLOOK!"

"Woah, kiddo," she sidestepped, glancing over at Alanna. "You're a lot stronger than I am. Careful."

Alanna was quick to pull you into a hug in a fruitless attempt to calm you down. "What's goin' on, Y/N? You okay?"

You were shaking, bouncing up and down rapidly in the defender's arms. "What d'you mean? I'm great!"

You bolted away, somersaulting across the pitch before slamming your foot into a ball that had been laying on the ground. "WHEEEE!"

"Y/N, Y/N, Y/N," Tony ran over with Steph in tow. "What's happened, kiddo? You just excited?"

"Yeah yeah yeah!" you did a random backflip for no reason other than you feeling like it. "I'm excited! Yup yup yup!"

Ellie looked severely ashamed for what she was about to whisper to Hayley. "Is she... is she high?"

"No, there's no way," the Madrid player shook her head instantly. "She cares about her career way too much to jeopardize it with something like drugs."

"Yeah, you're right. But if she's not high, then what?"

Across the pitch, Lydia and Mackenzie's eyes swept over each and every player like hawks.

Instead of being worried that a new, younger keeper would take their places when you joined the national team, they immediately took you under their wings and declared themselves as your team moms. It wasn't a secret that they'd kill anybody who messed with you.

"Mac," Lydia elbowed the West Ham captain. "Over there."

Mac's eyes zeroed in on two best friends, seemingly worried as they whispered in each other's ears. "Oi! Cooney! Grant! You got somethin' to share with the team?"

Both of their heads snapped up, fear written clearly all over their faces.

Two tall, angry Australian goalkeepers was a terrifying sight for anybody, but up until now, none of the Tillies had been on the receiving end of your team moms' wrath. Safe to say, no one was prepared.

"You give my kid something?" Macca demanded, rolling up her sleeves. "Why's she actin' weird?"

Charli gulped. "We— we, uh..."

"Spit it out," Mackenzie growled, ignoring the fact that you were currently clinging onto her leg like a koala. "What. Did. You. Do. To. My. Kid?"

"We gave her a bunch of Tim Tams," Kyra blurted out, caving as soon as Lydia dragged her thumb across her throat menacingly. "And... and... Charli gave her a coffee with, like, eight packets of sugar in it!"

"Me?!" Charli cried. "You literally handed it to her! And it was your idea! I only agreed!"

"Oh, you two are so dead," Mac glared, lumbering forward with much difficulty considering there was a 140-pound human attached to her right leg. "I swear to God, I'm gonna murder you both."

Lydia did it for her, seizing both troublemakers by the fronts of their shirts. "You think this is funny? Y/N can be fuckin' dangerous when she's hyper! She coulda run over Mini!"

Kyra looked past Lydia's shoulder to where you were snuggling into Macca's knee and babbling about racecars. "Uh—"

A smack to the back of the head shut her up real fast.

"Not now, Ky!" Charli hissed through gritted teeth.

"Tony!" Kyra pleaded as Lydia's grip on her training bib became tighter. "Tony, please!"

The manager held up his hands, walking backwards and almost tripping on the drinks cooler. "Nope. Not getting involved."

"Steph—"

The skipper looked around wildly. "I... I have to go plan your funeral! In the bathroom! Bye!"

"Ras, please—"

The Madrid player was gone before the gunner could even finish her sentence.

Lydia's eye twitched.

"Uh-oh."

"Y/N, babes, you good?" Ellie asked, nudging you slightly.

You blinked slowly. "Huh?"

"I'm gonna go get Mac, I'll be right back."

True to her word, the Lyon defender returned a minute later with the ever-protective older keeper at her side.

"Y/N's kind of out of it," Ellie explained as your head bobbed slightly. "I think she's crashing from the sugar."

"Aww, kiddo," Mackenzie sat beside you on the bench, using a hand to place your head on her shoulder. "It's only three, you tired?"

"Mhmm," you murmured, only half-paying attention. "Sleepy."

She sent a cowering Kyra and Charli a death glare. "Go to sleep, kid. I'm sure Tony wouldn't mind. Right, Tony?"

The manager instantly agreed, giving you both an awkward and slightly terrified thumbs-up. "I— yup. Whatever you want, girls. It's- it's totally up to you."

Lydia walked over, brushing a flyaway out of your face. "I'll bring you up to your room when we're done here. Get some rest, kid."
