"That's horrible," you'd think the pouncing and the fast pace, restless legs whether awake or asleep, bushy tail swaying violently, would represent a lack of sympathy, showcasing what the tanuki is hiding, lack of interest perhaps, lack of understanding or compassion, lack of anything that would be appropriate for the situation.

Those to make such a judgement easily, though, are not the kinds someone smarter than Yoshino (her brother, for one) would recognize as perceptive.

Look at the busy tail, at the restless bare feet, at the frown on her face, staring up at the giant with all the ferocity of a girl who's convinced nothing capable of killing her has been born yet, and you'll find easy enough what her clenched fist and petulant stomps are for.

"I think I've heard the stories, it's those damned humans," she shakes her leg, lifts it high enough for the lift of her skirt to be precarious (torn at the hem, easier to walk) as though trying to shake whatever unpleasant leaf had attached itself to her skin off in easy gestures.

She starts hopping backwards, almost running, putting enough distance between herself and the giant until the tongue peeking out through her lips in concentration eases her face into one half still angered half satisfied.

"I'll never be able to understand them, how can... people be so wrong? And so... how can they believe what they're wrong about so hard?"

She lifts her other hand, presents the apple in it almost triumphantly.

"Can I try throwing this into your mouth? You have to try to catch it. It's a game. Are you worried they'll try to hurt you, too?"

Yoshino’s voice seems to echo farther than should be possible for someone who appears so petite, as she shamelessly calls out her friend’s name. One would think that a tanuki would act more respectfully when in the vicinity of kitsunes: their differences in power were easy to note even to inexperienced eyes and the latter species was certainly surrounded by more grandeur than a small tanuki like her could ever hope for. But Yoshino is a tanuki in the fool-blooded sense, someone who looks at customs and decides to ignore them, who skips happily from room to room and hallway through hallway until she can throw open the door leading to the room she was actually looking for. Folding her hands behind her back and tilting her head until her long black hair is falling over her shoulder, Yoshino stands in the doorframe, grins brighter than a thousand suns and says: “Kyoko. You won’t believe what I just stole. So guess.”

GSNK Pairing Poll voting guide

Hello readers! After much anticipation, the 2nd pairing poll for GSNK has officially opened online \o/ and lucky for us international losers readers, we too can participate! (we just can’t get the prizes, so r.i.p anyone outside of Japan who wants the chance to score the goods below)

Prizes are categorised from A-F and are as follows: Wakamatsu plushie, Sakura plushie, Mikoshiba glasses stand, Hori glasses stand, GSNK badges, and a GSNK clear file.

There are a couple of questions to fill out, although you don’t need to fill out all of them (compulsory questions are marked with  (必須) in red). You can vote once per day, and voting closes on 20th May 23:59 Japan time. Results will be revealed in the August update. I’ll leave the instructions under the cut.

For those who do not know who this character is, her name is Michiru Kagemori, the main protagonist of the TRIGGER anime, Brand New Animal, or BNA. For me, the show was good, but I would not put it on the same level as TRIGGER's other successful shows like Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia, and SSSS.Gridman. It did have potential, but unfortunately, the execution prevented that potential from being fully realized. When I surfed through the internet to see how many minimalist wallpapers Michiru had, I was shocked to find that they were only in the single digits. Knowing this, I decided to increase that amount by making a minimalist wallpaper of everyone's favorite raccoon (or tanuki) waifu. It was a bit challenging but not as tough as making Yoshino's minimalist wallpaper.

“To be honest, uncle, you’d get a stomach ache if I told you how many siblings I have.”Easiest to note in Yoshino’s posture is the one trait her parents wish she doesn’t have: absolute lack of fear in front of strangers. Staring up at the strange man, Yoshino feels nothing but curiosity and even a bit of disinterest, clearly still very occupied with laying down the differently coloured leaves in front of her.Orange, red, brown, green, she had collected many during her journey through the forest and now that she’s taken a short break, she lines them up on the first flat stone she could find. Hovering near it, sitting all too comfortably on the ground, Yoshino didn’t care for any passer-by’s. She had a job to do.

She turns her head away and picks another leaf from her hand, it’s the colour of sunset and it has two tiny holes where her tanuki teeth had pierced through it as she carried them around in her mouth.It was much easier to navigate in her tanuki form, after all.This pink dress she was made to wear whenever she shifted makes playing around really hard.

“My parents always know where I am,” she states, matter-of-factly, turning her head to look up at the male again.“They know everything that is happening always at all times. What about you, uncle? Do your parents know you’re out here? It’s pretty dangerous to be out alone, you should be careful.”

The mention of just how much exactly umaibo cost - a price low enough even this random foreigner should have the change to cover it - dies at the back of her throat (behind some cheese-flavoured umaibo she was chewing on herself because she's most definitely the store's best customer, at least when it comes to it snack aisle) at the mention of a story.

Yoshino neither considers herself nor is she a particular word-favourable person. She prefers doing, she prefers action, if you have something to tell her, why not show her instead? If you saw a cool place, take her to it, if you found something funny, bring it to her, let her hold it and do something with it.

Words are nothing compared to living through things others will then tell people about in forms of stories.

But this here seems like the kind of situation she could make an exception for.

She's crouched behind the counter with her chest pressed against her, the umaibo held between herself and the intriguing stranger who must be going through some sort of adventurous endeavour to come rushing in the way he had.

Of course she agreed to let him hide. Who is she, if not herself? No one familiar with Fujiwara Yoshino would expect her to do different - much to the dismay of all those who wish she wouldn't put herself in 'stranger danger' situations quite as frequently as she does.

Yoshino tends to blame her nature as a tanuki (though, if you attribute any part of her to her species, she'll bite you).

Plenty other rightfully argue it's just her.

Doesn't matter either way.

She plops down onto her knees and squints at him.

"That is terrible business. My boss would fire me if I took stories in exchange for food." She says all this while opening the umaibo, grabbing one of his hands, and pressing it into his claimed palm. "Therefore, it better be a good story."

Then she sits down properly next to him and looks at him expectantly.

The grin exploding on Yoshino’s face would have blown several trees out of their soil, hadn’t her lips already been sporting a badly concealed smirk ever since Minjae had first announced he’d be stopping by and even more so ever since he’d actually shown up.

Given, it’s been a total of a handful of minutes perhaps and although Yoshino had definitely not shied away from moving her head this way and that or standing at particular angles or going as far as playfully slamming into Minjae to rub her cheek against his shoulder and her hair into his face, she does appreciate he’s noticed so fast.

She stops what she’s doing - trying to open a pillowcase of one of the pillows she’d taken from her bed in the hotel room they’d booked for this impromptu trip - tosses the pillow aside and spins around. Hands on her hips, she shakes her head. 

If spun this way and that, having it fly against one cheek, then the next, she can manage to have the light bounce off her subtly painted strands almost right. In resemblance of the back of a scarabeus, the brown shines with reflections of green, forest and lush.

“Sure did,” she says, grinning when her now unruly hair stops swinging around her features. “Wanna see up close?”

Curse the tanuki for having forgotten. Had she only checked the calendar, then she could have provided her own share of boxes, she could have educated Nala on one of the best days of the year, instead she’d left her hanging like this.

Truly despicable of someone who considers herself a friend of the colourful non-terrian, now there’s only one thing left to do that might make it so that she would regain the claim over that title, to be worthy of it once more. She must turn this into the best pocky day the world has ever seen, set a bar so high that no one, near or far, will ever be able to meet it, let alone cross it.

It’s the least she owes Nala. And she owes her a lot, actually. There’s something about the energy the other exudes, so similar to her own, that makes Yoshino wish she had means to express this odd sensation in her chest, this warmth, this idea that with En’nala, she won’t ever have to fear being reprimanded.

With Minjae it’s very much the same, the male will always find a place in Yoshino’s heart. With Nala, though, she feels as though she’s found an equal. Yes, Nala might be the sister she never knew she’d longed for, especially considering how many she has.

She shifts until she’s facing Nala directly, letting out a mix between a whisper of awe and a shout of excitement, as she leans over the many treasures the fox-eared girl had brought with her. She looks up, coal eyes sparkling as they meet Nala’s brown ones, lips parting into the widest grin she could make up on the spot. “Nala,” she starts, as if speaking in conspiracies, leaning in closer and closer. “What if we just... try all of them... at once.”

“My best, clearly,” with one hand on her hip, Yoshino uses the other to gesture to the wending machine she’s stood in front of, making her and her new companion the only two people filling the people-void of this particular street corner. So close to the surrounding nature, this wending machine has been one of Yoshino’s favourite trip goals ever since she’s first discovered it and the chocolate bars within it.

Sweet and at the same time salty, a taste combination Yoshino would have never dreamt of longing for this deeply, but now can hardly live without. The lack of change in her pocketless dresses has never been a problem, her shapeshifting abilities and the amount of tricks she has accumulated up her sleeves for reaching into places she should technically be too large for, have always helped her.

Until today.

It seems that someone realised that something continously managed to slip its hand or otherwise into the machine and installed a mechanism that would only allow for anything to reach into it after some coins had been thrown into it.

A foot clad in a flat shoe hits the ground in sync with the girl’s huff. Her gaze seems distant as she stares at the street under her feet. Then her head lifts and she stares at her companion. “Help me break this wending machine.”

@intergalacticxmisfits​ | “Hey Yoshino,” Minjae smiles as he and Nala with paper bags in hand come to the little lagoon where they’d planned to meet. “We brought you some snacks!” Nala beamed. “In the tanuki movie Minjae showed me, they said transforming takes lots of energy! So we brought you cola and cookies oh and cloud candy to help! With the energy! Sugar has lots of energy!”

She stands up so fast she almost falls into the lagoon, but luckily, thanks to lots of experience with accidents of the likes, she manages to regain her balance last minute, dropping the stick she was poking into the water’s surface directly into it to skip over to her two friends.

Her lips are parted, a squeak building at the back of her throat, but only residing there for the time being, silence passing her lips as her eyes and her hands dart back and forth between the paper bags the two bad brought. Her fingers are waggling, as if they’re itching to open the bags and peek inside, overzealous to see the goodies that were being described to her.

Her eyes continue to widen until they no longer physically can and she begins jumping on the spot, hands joint and intertwined, and it’s obvious she doesn’t know where the put the energy of her enthusiasm, how to portray it in the face of the best surprise someone’s ever made for her.

And it’s not only because her friends had finally arrived and brought along snacks, but because they thought to bring snacks for her to regain her energy, because... because they cared. Because...

She throws herself at the two of them, somewhat mindful to avoid the bags they’re holding and to actually topple them over as she does so, but she wraps one arm around Nala’s neck and the other around Minjae, effectively pulling them into a group-hug, even though the presence of the bags doesn’t make it as tight as Yoshino would like it to be.

“Thank you,” she whispers into the space between their heads, “I love you guys so much.” Then she pulls away and grins into their faces. “But you’ll be eating them too, right?”

Saeyoung > Mariah

“What?! It’s no secret what I really think about my wife, my beloved, the love of my life, the brightest star in my night-sky, my spaceship spouse and companion, my adored and beautiful pig wrestler.”

Apple red curls continue to bounce as he joins his hands in front of himself, continuing his dramatic delivery of monikers and titles, one after the other, that he truly believes in, even if his exaggerated relaying might make it seem otherwise. But then he stops, the energy fading from his shoulders as they slump, a sigh slipping past the lips that had been showcasing a dorky grin, moments prior. His hands sink.

“I love her. She’s, she’s so ridiculously smart. And strong. And she’s the bravest person I know, maybe even the bravest in the entire world. She never looks scared, even when she is. And she won’t ever give up on anyone. She didn’t even give up on me, even though I gave her no reason to keep fighting for me. For us. Hell, God knows I gave her plenty of reasons to walk away, but she never did. She saw through me, and all my bullshit, and stuck around despite it. At first, I thought she was just stubborn.”

He shrugs, a fond smile playing at his lips now. “But now I know. She is stubborn. And the best human in the world.”

“He’s my best friend, obviously.” The statement is delivered like an affirmation one would be a fool to even think of second-guessing. He doesn’t even look up as he says it, as if it is a truth so deeply ingrained in the very reality of the universe that neither eye contact nor intensity is needed to bring the point across. Soulmates, platonic ones included, are pre-written by whoever wrote the stars into the sky.

Why would you second-guess something like that?

He looks up to smile, instead, from corner to corner, bright and delighted. “He’s a genius. A prodigy maybe, even, although I wouldn’t know because I didn’t know him as a child. But he’s so incredibly smart. Smarter than anybody else I know. His knowledge about the universe is almost like the universe itself, never-ending! But that’s not all!”

He lifts a finger, as if to maintain attention. “It’s not even the half of it, and I could be talking about his brain for hours, but there’s another very important thing I need to mention: his heart. Not the thinker organ, but Minjae’s is as well developed as the one in his skull. He’s there for others, almost unconditionally. Not really unconditionally, but if he thinks you’re a good person, he’ll probably try to take the moon from the sky for you. And you know what’s craziest? He’s probably gonna succeed at it too. All in all, he’s incredible, he’s our generation’s Einstein! And as kind as Mother Theresa. Imagine that.”

Fenris > Theo

“I don’t like to share my thoughts, let alone those I withhold of other people.” It’s a charmingly kind way to put it, tilted head, gentle tone, look in his eyes resembling that of an uncle or perhaps the father he’ll never be, trying to explain why he might relent today, but definitely won’t the next time he’ll be asked to play this game.

It’s the kind of giving in that happens with little to no malice, a resignation that is only a bit of play pretend, the ‘alright, you can have the cookie, but just this once’. It’s a great contrast to the beast he used to be. And he does, in part, believe, it is also thanks to people like Theo, living the example he has unknowingly lived by.

“Besides, I find it rude to speak of her in her absence. So I shall only say this: history is written by those who fired the gun, not by those left crippled by the bullet in their leg. Theodora walks with a metaphorical limp through life, given to her by I’m assuming a difficult past I have no further information on. She’s intent to continue using that very leg to deliver her blows, digging around in that bullet wound, believing to be deserving of punishment for deeds I’m, once again, assuming where caused by life simply... making her believe it is all she was made to do. Yet she continues to rise, continues to learn how to accept people holding her elbow or clutches offered to her. She is strength and she is resilience, and every time she feels she falls, she’s taken another step towards victory.”

He blinks. “Quite admirable, don’t you think?”

Hoon > Kailee

“There’s nothing much to say here, I believe.” Ever the reserved, Hoon only ever seems to roll up his sleeves to wash his hands before surgery, and never to reveal the strongly beating heart so stubbornly refusing to rest on his palm.

Even for those, or rather the one, who’d managed to make his heart beat hard enough that he’d failed to continue to neglect he possesses one in the first place, buried deep beneath the layer of ice he himself had covered it with, almost like a soft blanket of refusal, of pushes being made to avoid being pushed first.

In Kang Hoon’s eyes, his heart doesn’t belong anywhere but in the dark and cold hole, he’d shoved it back into, where it was safe. Or rather, where he was safe from it. “I don’t... I guess there’s a lot I don’t know about her. A lot of... There’s a lot. No matter how much I know, there’s always more. More I’d like to know. More I don’t want to know. More I’m afraid to know. But no matter what it is, as long as it’s hers, I don’t think I’ll be able to turn my back on it.”

Yoshino > Minjae

“He’s the best space guy I know!” She throws her hands in the air, as if trying to grab the sun from the sky and gift it to the one she thinks would deserve it most. For her, Minjae is perhaps the closest thing to the sun itself that she might be able to find in a single person.

Warm and welcoming and there even when you can’t see it, blinding in its brightness, always providing, always ready to help, somehow within her he... “He’s also kind of like summer,” she puts her finger to her chin, pensive. “He’s warm and super fun, he reminds me of fireflies when he looks at the stars, because I look at fireflies like he looks at stars... I wonder if he’ll agree to catch some with me. And the sky is always brightest in summer which obviously reminds me of him, because the sky is basically space and space is basically Minjae! It’s like, his friendliness and his heart, are as large as the universe itself! Which is pretty large, he’s told me so.”

She folds her hands behind her back. “I’m glad we’re friends. I really am. He’s always got my back. And I always want to have his! I think anyone who’s his friend should consider themselves lucky to be. He’s the greatest friend to have.”
