I’ve been hesitant to post stuff that isn’t TF related cause I know that’s how this blog started out, but I’ve decided fuck it, it’s my art blog, I’ll post what I want. While I’m still into Transformers, I want to start posting my other art (whether that be fanart or original).
The art in question that I’ve really been wanting to post is of the Baldur’s Gate 3 companions. I’m very normal about them. I’ve got like…. close to 300 hours in the game

Tav and Halsin walked back into the camp together, exchanging slightly awkward glances and conversation. He broke off from her with a smile once the camp was in sight. She gave a small wave and then saw a few of her companions wandering over towards her. Astarion, Karlach, and…Lae’zel? Astarion and Karlach were walking a step or two behind Lae’zel, Astarion was speaking to her, but Tav couldn’t make out the words.
“Hello, darling.” Astarion said with a slight bow of his head. “I do hope you’re feeling better.”
“Um, yeah. A little.” She was desperately trying to hide how anxious she felt at the moment.
“I’m glad to hear it, my dear. Now, I believe Lae’zel has something she would like to say to you.” He was trying to sound light and happy, but underneath Tav could hear a much more threatening tone.
“I believe I owe you an…apology.” Lae’zel said the last word through gritted teeth. Tav looked at Astarion, who smiled innocently.
“Lae’zel, you don’t have to–” Tav was cut off by a grunt from Lae’zel who was glaring at Karlach.
“No. I…insist.” Her jaw was so tightly clenched that Tav was sure she would grind her teeth to dust.
“I spoke out of turn earlier. There is not a single person here who has not benefited from your kindness,” she paused and took a deep breath, “myself included.”
Tav stood staring at her, only managing to blink in response.
“I acted rashly and out of frustration. You have proven many times over to be an effective warrior and leader. This culture is still new to me, and sometimes I still find the customs vexing. I am sorry.” Her jaw had unclenched slightly before she finished talking. By the end, she almost sounded sincere.
“Thank you, Lae’zel. Apology accepted.” Tav smiled and held out her hand, which Lae’zel took for a very tight handshake. She glared at Astarion before turning away with a huff to go back to her tent. Tav turned her attention back to Karlach and Astarion.
“Awful nice of Lae’zel to come make amends, eh Soldier?” Karlach beamed at her.
“Yeah…incredibly nice of her to do that. Entirely on her own.” Tav responded, her eyes shifting back to Astarion.
“Yes, well I suppose everyone makes mistakes from time to time, darling.” He was still maintaining his innocent smile.
Karlach started to walk away but turned back around to whisper not so quietly in Tav’s ear.
“It was all Astarion.” She winked.
“Yeah, I got that buddy.” Tav whispered back. She turned back to Astarion once Karlach had walked away. He was still smiling. A warm feeling spread throughout her body as she smiled back at him. Stepping forward, she grabbed him by the collar and gave him a long, gentle kiss.
“Thank you.” She whispered.
“Whatever for?” He kept his aura of innocence intact. Tav rolled her eyes at him.
“Deny it all you want, but you did something very nice for me.”
“How dare you!” Astarion looked properly offended. Tav just smiled back. “Those kinds of accusations could get you into serious trouble, my dear. Best to keep it just between ourselves.”
“Not a chance. I’m going to tell anyone who will listen that Astarion Ancunin did something selfless and kindhearted.” She teased, taking a step like she was going to walk away. He caught her arm and pulled her back into another kiss.
“Now now, don’t go ruining my reputation.” He said softly.
“Fine, it’ll be our little secret.” She leaned into him and placed her head on his chest. Feeling his arms wrap around her, she let herself relax into him for a moment.
“You’re not alone, Tav. I hope you know that.” He whispered.
“I do.” She replied.
They stood in their embrace for a while, Tav working up the courage to bring up her conversation with Halsin. She looked around to see if they were far enough away from the others to talk. Karlach had ears like a godsdamned bat.
“So…how was your little walk in the woods? It seems like Halsin was able to help lift your spirits a little bit.” He pulled away from her.
Tav felt her heart start to race and a pit of anxiety form in her stomach.
“Uh, good…like I said I just needed to clear my head…” She could hear the nervousness creeping into her voice. One of her hands shot up to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“You’re being weird…why are you being weird?” Astarion asked, one eyebrow raised.
“Um…” Tav paused, she could feel herself starting to blush.
“You can tell me, Tav.” He smiled softly at her.
“You uh…you wouldn’t believe the conversation I just had with Halsin.” She laughed nervously.
Astarion gave her a confused look, then suddenly let out a very loud laugh.
“Ha! I wondered when you would come talk to me about this.” He said, still laughing a little bit. Tav really wasn’t sure if the laughter was a good thing or not.
“Oh did…did Halsin already talk to you?” She asked, trying to judge his reaction.
“Oh darling, he didn’t need to. The two of you aren’t exactly subtle. For fucks’ sake Tav, you nearly introduced yourself as ‘fuckable’ when we first met him.”
Tav’s guilt from earlier in the day returned tenfold. She hid her face in her hands, regretting her decision to even bring this up.
“Gods, you must think I’m horrible…” She said, thankful that she seemed to have run out of tears for the day.
“You? Never. There’s no need to be embarrassed.” Astarion took her hands away from her face and gently and held them against his chest. “Gods know I’ve stolen my fair share of glances at the druid. I mean I saw him coming out of the river after a swim once and gods above…” Astarion stared off past her for a moment before shaking his head and bringing his attention back to her.
“I trust you, Tav. If this is something you want, I…” He paused. “I’m not opposed.”
Tav’s head snapped up to him, surprised.
“You’re…you’re not?” She asked, trying to make sure she was understanding.
“Halsin has experience with this kind of arrangement. He’s someone who I would trust to navigate it respectfully. I don’t know that I’m quite ready to jump into bed all together yet but…” He looked down at her hands and squeezed them just a little bit tighter.
“I just have to ask,” his voice was now barely louder than a whisper, “you aren’t asking this just because we…because we haven’t…you know in a while.” He was looking at the ground now, watching his feet kick some dirt around.
“Astarion, look at me.” She moved one of her hands to rest on his cheek, lifting his chin up to meet her gaze. “I never want you to think that for a moment. Sex or no sex, I want you by my side, always. If you told me that you couldn’t do this, I would refuse him right away. I just wanted to know if this was something you would be open to.”
“I know that, I was being silly. I just needed to hear it from you.” He turned his head to kiss the hand she had on his cheek. “Go, have fun with Halsin. Far be it from me to hold your hunger against you.”
“Thank you…for trusting me.” Tav responded, hugging him again.
Astarion and Tav walked back over towards the rest of camp together, breaking off at his tent. Tav walked to Halsin’s tent to find him whittling on the ground in front of it.
“Making another protection charm? I would love something that keeps the mosquitoes away from my tent.” She teased.
Halsin looked up at her and grinned.
“Ha, I’m glad your sense of humor seems to have returned. Unfortunately, I’m not aware of the god who you must pay homage to in order to keep mosquitoes away.” He stood up, sitting his tools to the side.
“Surely Silvanus could help,” she continued, “after all they are considered one of nature’s creations. At least I would assume.”
“Given how often I’ve already prayed to him asking him to protect you, I would assume he’s already done everything in his power.” His smile was more distracting to her now than ever.
“Have you already spoken to Astarion? A delicate topic of discussion I’m sure, so please take your time.” He was trying to keep his voice light, but Tav could hear a bit of a nervous edge to it.
“I have.” She responded quickly. “He’s open to what you proposed.”
“That is most gratifying to hear.” Halsin suddenly had a huge smile on his face, one that Tav returned.
“So…what happens now?” She asked.
“Now? Now we will have each other, but not just each other.” He responded, still smiling. “I do not ask you to pledge yourself to me. You are all I want, but I only wish to share in your heart, not keep it entirely for myself. Let others know the joy of being with you as well.”
Tav nodded in response, taking one of his hands in hers.
“I understand…this is what I want.” She said quietly.
“Then meet me tonight, after the others have gone to bed. Come back down by the river where we talked earlier.” He kissed her hand lightly before leaning in close to whisper in her ear. “But do not expect to get much rest.”
The words caused Tav’s cheeks to flush and a shiver to run down her spine. Halsin slowly let go of her hand and walked away towards the center of camp where their companions were starting to gather for their evening meal. She smiled after him and caught Astarion’s gaze, who gave her a smile and thumbs up gesture. His eagerness on her behalf made her giggle a little bit.
The rest of the evening was typical of their group. They each had a plate with a mix of cheeses and dried sausage, accompanied by glasses of wine from the various bottles they had opened. Everyone was laughing and joking as usual, all evidence of their earlier drama seemed to have faded away to Tav’s relief. Most everyone came to check on her, making sure her injuries were healed and that she was feeling better. She tried to give them her full attention, but she was already distracted thinking about the night to come. Every now and then she would catch Halsin looking at her and her heart rate would quicken again. Her obvious lack of focus gave Astarion plenty of material to joke about for the evening. Quietly and lovingly teasing her about tonight and other nights to come. Hearing him able to joke about their new relationship status put her even more at ease.
Slowly but surely, all of her friends started to retire for the night. She caught Halsin heading off into the trees rather soon after he finished his meal. It took all Tav’s self-control not to follow him immediately. It wasn’t too long after that Astarion excused himself for the night, giving her a soft kiss before leaving.
“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do, darling.” He whispered with a wink. She smiled as she watched him walk away.
Tav offered to clean up the rest of the mess left after their meal, making sure everyone was off in their own tents before she followed after Halsin. As she stepped into the bushes, her heart began to race again, just as it had earlier in the day. However, before she was running away from her responsibilities, from her obligations. Now, she was running toward the start of something new.
***
Tav broke through the trees into the cleared area near the riverbank. She spotted Halsin standing next to a nearby tree, shirtless and eyes closed, his outstretched hand resting on the trunk. It was a very clear night and the moon cast a soft light across his face that made her heart flutter. She took a few more slow steps toward him, eventually stepping on a small twig that caused him to snap his head towards her.
“Ah, there you are. I wasn’t sure if you would show, I started to wonder if this was all too soon.” He said with a smile. Tav could hear a hint of nervousness underneath his smiling face.
“Nonsense,” she responded, “this is something I’ve wanted for some time.”
Halsin’s gaze suddenly shifted, and she felt as if he was peering into her very soul.
“As have I. Still, this is like a fantasy. I almost dare not to blink, lest you fade away into the night as you did in so many of my dreams.”
Tav slowly moved towards him, closing the gap between them with each step.
“Push those doubts from your mind, Halsin. I’m right here with you.” She reached up and placed her hand on his chest, feeling his heartbeat beneath her palm. He closed his eyes and sighed heavily at her touch.
“Yes, you are.” He whispered, almost in disbelief. “You have no idea how hard it has been to contain myself. I almost dare not give in now or else I will devour you entirely.” There was a hunger in his eyes that Tav had never seen before. It was intoxicating, taking all of her energy not to drag him to her level and kiss him until she was dizzy. She held his gaze, taking long, steadying breaths to keep her legs from giving out from under her.
“Well, that is why I’m here.” She responded, desire dripping from every syllable. Halsin smirked in response, sending a pulse of excitement through her entire body.
“Nevertheless, I will be gentle.” He said quietly. With startling speed, he stripped the remaining clothes from his body, barely breaking eye contact with Tav.
“Or at least, I shall try.” He had a wicked smile on his lips.
A moment later he was all over her. His large arms wrapped around her shoulders and waist, drawing her as close as possible. Their lips pressed together tightly, yet somehow also in the most tender way that made Tav want to melt further into his embrace. She felt his tongue gently part her lips to glide over her own. His warm skin pressed against every inch of her, taking away some of the chill from the evening breeze blowing past them. She reached her arms up to curl around his neck, pulling him even closer to her. He was already hard, pressing his erection against her thigh. Suddenly, he lifted her up and she quickly wrapped her legs around his waist, clinging to him like he was a piece of driftwood, and she was a lost soul at sea. He pressed her back up against a nearby tree, continuing to hold and kiss her until she felt as if she was going to faint. The bark of the tree was rough against her back, a stark contrast to Halsin’s smooth hands on her neck and arms. Tav pulled away slightly, their lips still barely touching.
“I suddenly feel overdressed.” Out of breath, she breathed the words out back into Halsin’s mouth. He smiled against her lips, gently releasing her to stand back on the ground.
Tav slowly moved her hands down to where her shirt was tucked in to her pants. While Halsin’s eager kisses were still distracting her, she pulled the fabric slowly up to her neck. He reached up and helped to pull the garment the rest of the way over her head, just briefly parting his lips apart from hers to do so. The warmth of their torsos pressed against each other made Tav smile. She reached down towards the top of her pants and as she did so, Halsin started kissing his way down her body. Her hands fumbled with the strings at her belt as she was fully preoccupied by the trail his lips left down her chest and stomach. Suddenly she felt him gently tugging at the strings with his teeth, quickly undoing the simple knot. Their hands worked together to slowly pull the remaining clothing from her lower body. She kicked the garments away as Halsin stood and slowly took a couple of steps back away from her.
“Just as nature intended.” His voice was a low growl, causing a flush to come over Tav’s face and chest.
“Come here to me.” He said in the same primal growling tone, his hungry eyes looking over every part of her.
She went to take a step towards him, but suddenly he stopped and hunched over slightly. A slight magical glow surrounded him, highlighting every line and groove across his body. With another growl and familiar hum of magic, the handsome elf before her suddenly transformed into a large cave bear. The creature’s eyes still glowed with the same lust she saw in Halsin’s elf form. After just a moment or two, the golden glow returned and Halsin was standing before her once more.
“I…I’m sorry.” He huffed. “Sometimes when blood runs hot enough it can be difficult to tame the beast.” He looked away from her, suddenly seeming ashamed of his loss of control. The display had startled Tav without question, but she thought no less of him for it. In fact, she was rather thrilled that his desire for her made him unable to control his druidic transformations.
“I’m flattered that I have that effect on you, love.” She gave him an encouraging smile. “Now come back over here.” Tav held her hand out, inviting him back into her arms.
A relieved smile spread across his face as he took a step towards her.
“I need no further encouragement.” He said, still slightly out of breath.
With that, he took her hand and was pressed against her once more, backing her body up against the tree again. He kissed every inch of her jaw and neck, earning small moans and sighs from her with each one. She had one arm around his neck and one around his waist, her fingers digging into his skin trying to pull him as close to her as possible. His cock pressed against her hips, warm and hard. She brought one of her legs up to hook around his thigh and started to slowly grind against him, feeling him twitch against the movements. Halsin let out a long sigh against her neck, moving his hips in time with hers.
After a few moments, he broke away and started to kiss down her torso again. His hands were constantly moving, tracing small shapes into her skin, every now and then pressing his hands harder into her back to pull her closer to him. He let his mouth wander over her breasts, catching each of her nipples with a small flick of his tongue. She felt like a pile of ooze, whimpering helplessly at each gentle touch. Continuing down her body, his kisses became slower and more teasing. Before she knew it he was kneeling in front of her, hands gently pushing her legs a little further apart.
He continued his tortuous kissing around her stomach, moving his way to her inner thighs, lightly biting the soft skin. She dug her nails into the skin of his arms and shoulders, soaking in every sensation. As he continued to kiss and bite along her legs, his hands slowly made their way up the front of her thighs to her sex. His warm fingers moved around her folds, spreading the wetness around them. He used his thumbs to massage her, causing her knees to buckle but he held her up. They slowly slid up and circled her clit, one at a time.  Her entire core was aching under his touch. She was torn between pushing him to the ground and immediately taking him or letting him continue to tease her so this could be drawn out for as long as possible. Tav worked one of her hands into his hair, lightly caressing his scalp.
The movement caused Halsin to moan against her leg, which she returned in kind. She gently tugged at his hair, pulling him up to where his hands were eagerly pleasuring her. His fingers were quickly replaced by his tongue causing a loud gasp from Tav. As his hands greedily grabbed at her thighs and butt, his tongue swirled and flicked its way around her entire cunt. She could feel her legs starting to shake under the sudden change of pace, she tangled her hands further into his hair, pressing his face harder into her pelvis. She could feel his lips turn up into a smile at the motion, a small moan vibrating against her sensitive skin.
“Gods…fuuuuck…” She could barely choke out a word in between her gasping and whimpers.
Halsin didn’t let up, he continued to lick and suck, every now and then letting one of his fingers come up and help. She could feel her body building towards release as she concentrated on Halsin’s tongue tasting every bit of her. Her toes curled into the soft earth below her under the strain. With one final flick of his tongue, he took as much of her as he could into his mouth and sucked until she couldn’t keep herself from crying out in pleasure. She felt the wave of ecstasy ripple through her body as he slowed his movements to a stop, his hands still massaging their way around her body. Her knees were weak and her legs were shaking, but she still wanted more of him.
Halsin looked up at her, wiping his mouth on the back of his arm. He stood up slowly and pressed his body back against hers. As if he had read her mind, he leaned in and whispered in her ear.
“More?” He asked, slightly out of breath.
Tav bit her lower lip in response and drew him in for a kiss, still able to taste her own arousal on his lips. She pulled him down to the ground on top of her, wrapping her legs around his waist. He held her there for a moment, staring into her eyes. One of his hands came up to cradle her face, gently caressing her cheek. She smiled back up at him, wrapping her arm around his neck and pulling him in for another kiss.
He took the opportunity to slowly lower himself on to her, pressing his cock against her, but not entering her yet. Her hips instinctively moved up to meet him as he grinded around her folds, but it wasn’t enough. She moved one of her hands down to grip around him and started stroking up and down, holding him against her. He let out a surprised moan against her lips.
“I need more of you, Halsin.” She breathed the words into his ear.
“As you wish, my heart.” He replied in a low whisper.
Halsin let her guide him towards her entrance, hovering his tip just outside. Still holding on to his cock, she circled his tip around her, letting her wetness cover him. The movement earned her another low moan from him as he slowly lowered himself into her. They each let out a long sigh at the feeling. She let go of him to bring her hand back up into his hair, holding his head in place against hers. Slowly he filled her, pressing his entire length into her body. He paused for a moment and let her adjust to the sensation, she could feel him throbbing inside of her.
“You feel incredible, my love.” He whispered into her ear.
His words sent a shiver through her body, causing her to arch her back up towards him. Halsin placed one hand on the ground by her head to steady himself as he began to slowly thrust himself in and out of her. His other hand moved down to rub her clit at the same time. Tav closed her eyes and tilted her head back, letting her hips move in time with his. His thrusts started to get harder and deeper, the combination of pleasure from both his cock and his fingers threatening to send Tav over the edge. Her hands gripped his thighs, silently begging him to go deeper each time. Both of their moans and cries seemed to get louder each time he pushed back into her. Her legs were shaking again, one of her hands shot back up to Halsin’s face to pull him down and kiss him deeply. He quickened his pace even more, drawing quick shallow breaths through his nose as the kiss muffled their moans. Tav couldn’t hold on any longer, she threw both of her arms around him and pulled him as tight against her as she could. She cried out, burying her face in his neck. Waves of pleasure washed over her body, she could feel herself involuntarily spasming around him as he took his last few thrusts to find his own release. He collapsed on top of her, the weight of his body helping to subdue her shaking muscles. She could feel him pulsing inside of her, squeezing every last drop from himself in his final few thrusts. They laid there tangled together for a moment, both breathing heavily.
Tav had no other thoughts in her mind except for the relief she felt here in Halsin’s arms. The pressure of leadership gone, the guilt that soured her fantasies had vanished, all of the doubt she had felt over the past few days nowhere to be found.
Slowly, Halsin rolled to the side, propping himself up on one arm to face her. She traced the lines along the muscles of his torso, wiping away the small beads of sweat that had formed. The night breeze helped cool her warm, flushed skin. He pulled her close, pressing her hands against his chest and her head to the side of his neck. She lazily kissed along his neck and shoulder, listening to the small sighs they elicited from him. His hands softly stroked her back, wiping away some of the dirt and leaves that had stuck to her.
“Maybe next time we should bring a bedroll. Or better yet find a bed somewhere.” She murmured against him.
“The comforts offered by that type of furniture are not something I’m accustomed to.” He chuckled. “But by all means, if you find a piece up to the challenge, please let me know right away.”
She snuggled closer to him, listening to his heartbeat and soft breaths. After a few moments he pulled her up with him and led her towards the water.
“At least let me clean you up before we make our way back to camp.” He offered with a smile.
They waded into the river; the water was cool but not uncomfortable. Halsin moved out far enough where they could sit comfortably in the water, coming up almost to Tav’s shoulders as he pulled her onto his lap. He used his hands to gently pour water over her back and arms, rinsing away the dirt stuck to her. She leaned forward and kissed him softly, holding his face in her hands.
“Maybe we don’t have to go back just yet.” She whispered.
“Oh?” He was smiling back up at her, still slowly caressing her back.
“The night’s still young…and I seem to recall you promising that I wouldn’t get much rest.” Tav’s heart was racing again, her mind blurred with lust and longing for him. She wanted more of him, she needed to feel him against her for longer.
Halsin suddenly gripped her back, pulling her body tight against him. He pressed his lips right up against her to whisper in her ear.
“Well, I cannot allow you to go to bed disappointed, my heart.”
Tav couldn’t help but let out an excited laugh as he picked her up and waded out further into the water, eager to feel Halsin’s loving touch long into the night. And for many more nights to come.

I would like to think that for Durge, since they are essentially created from the flesh of a God, they would be at least have SOME divination right? I know there is a race of children of gods but I don't think Durge is that and I am not very knowledgeable in dnd lore. But I HC that they have a little more ✨️ than the rest of the citizens of Baldurs Gate SO my silly HC is this:
Since they are mortal+ they probably never have gotten sick. Like your average cold or the flu. So in this case your resisting durge is redeemed and get downgraded to your average immune system right?
I can just imagine the first time they experience getting sick. They are not stupid. Unless that's what you want them to be. They know what a cold or flu is and how it works but experiencing it themselves is a whole different world. It's slightly terrifying not being able to keep anything down or feeling like you are being frozen alive yet your blood is boiling in your veins. I know a potion or a healing spell would burn that sickness out in a snap but I'd like to think for simple sicknesses they just have to give you a nice tea and your body has to do the rest.
I can imagine the companions and/or lover for your Durge having to comfort them and tell them this is normal and will pass. Roll the poor ex murder cult leader up burrito style and give them all the snuggles.

Party
I propose: the companions do away with formally labelled "girls night" and "boys night", and just lay out that there will be two groups, and what the planned activities and vibe will be, and everyone's invited to join whichever group they're comfortable with.
Most of the guys (at least Astarion, Gale, and Halsin) go for the 'spa and girl-talk' because it seems chill, and they want to take care of their hair. Halsin's happy to wash and give scalp massages, and get his hair braided, giving out wholesome relationship and life advice.
Most of the ladies (Karlach, Lae'zel, maybe Tav/Durge) go for the high energy, competitive group. Wrestling, feats of strength, foot-races and climbing trees.
Wyll may fight with the ladies, or maybe decides to take a load off with the other guys (maybe he sheepishly slinks over after realising he's woefully outmatched 😅).
Shadowheart certainly has enough hair it could use some care and attention. But I also like to imagine her loudly cheering on Karlach to win, when she's against Lae'zel 😆

Went to the dentist today and it got me thinking about vampires and tooth care, and like, I bet vampires would be dental hygiene fanatics. Like, their teeth are their weapon as much as their meal ticket, and if you were to loose a fang to tooth decay you'd be pretty well screwed. And alright, maybe the blessings of unlife make you immune to gum disease and gingervitis, and unless you're snacking on overindulged toddlers you're probably not at risk of a cavity, but still. You want to take care of those suckers (pun intended)
So all I'm saying is Astarion going around camp at dusk and dawn, scowling at the tadfools who aren't quite as fastidious in their oral hygiene routines and making passive aggressive remarks about bad breath and rotted teeth until eventually the whole party ends up on a strict dental care regiment. Every one of them marching down to the creek to stand around awkwardly with toothbrushes sticking out of their mouths for two minutes morning and night, trying not to make eye contact with one another as they begrudgingly brush until Astarion deems it sufficient. And don't forget to scrub off your tongue! Maybe that'll make it a little less acerbic, hm?

I can't find the original post but I keep seeing screenshots of the one person who made their tav basically the party's dad and I love that. I love making old tavs that look at their companions and go "Whelp, I guess I have seven unruly children now" and by the time Jaheira joins in she sees basically one elderly adventurer juggling a vampire spawn, a (formerly) explosive wizard, a tiefling who only recently stopped being on fire all the time, the 24-year-old blade of frontiers, a murderhobo githyanki who was betrayed by her goddess, a recovering Sharran who was betrayed by HER goddess, a Drow who was literally an Absolute general like two days ago, and Tav is just like "My kids :)" While Astarion is pickpocketing people and Minthara is poisoning dinner and Lae'zel and Shadowheart are knife-fighting (Flirting)

Author's Note: Part 2 of 3! Part 3 will probably take a little more time, but enjoy some sweet Halsin moments in the meantime.
It took all of Tav’s willpower to keep the tears in her eyes until she was out of sight of the camp. As soon as she was confident that no one else could see her, she started to run. She let the tears flow down her cheeks, drying quickly as the air rushed past her face. She ran until she hit the river, stopping to catch her breath. She placed her hands on her knees, her lungs burning as they tried to bring in more air, the blood from the cut on her hand seeping into the leg of her pants. Her nose felt like it had been lit on fire as she tried to inhale. Lae’zel’s words echoed in her ears.
Your weakness will be the ruin of us all. I will have no part of it.
Tav couldn’t hold it in anymore. She picked up a nearby rock and with a scream that took the rest of the air out of her lungs, threw it as far as she could into the river. Picking up rock after rock, she launched each of them into the water in front of her. She yelled into the sky, screaming until her throat was sore. The pain in her nose ripped through her head from the effort. Tears were falling freely from her eyes as she stood on the edge of the chasm that was her crippling self-doubt. There was a truth to Lae’zel’s words. They did stop often to help others, and it did possibly delay them arriving at Baldur’s Gate. She had asked them to use their precious time to help others in need, even though not everyone had agreed. Tav was constantly torn between her desperate desire to help others that were hurting and her obligation to the group of tadpoled adventurers following her. The pain in her head returned, she could feel a small knot forming on the back of her head where Lae’zel had hit her. Finally for a moment, she let her despair consume her. She let herself doubt every decision she had made since the nautiloid. Falling to her knees, cradling her injured arm against her torso, she told herself that she wasn’t the leader her companions needed. She bowed her head down to her chest and just simply let the tears run freely down her face.
***
Halsin stepped carefully through the trees, trying to keep track of where Tav went. By the looks of the ground and bushes around him, she broke into a run shortly after leaving the camp. He had noticed a change in her demeanor over the past few days. She talked less with the others around the fire, she seemed overall less sure of herself. Halsin knew those signs of fatigue well, for he had been battling them for nearly one hundred years until he joined this group. He did what he could to help her without undermining her authority. Providing potions and elixirs to help with stress related maladies, trying to keep her spirits up when they talked. During one of their conversations, he found out that she had a mortal fear of krakens. Although as he assured her, this fear wouldn’t be a problem so long as she didn’t partake in high seas voyages.
He wanted to give her something to lift her spirits though. In his pocket was a small wooden pendant that he carved for her that represented Deep Sashelas, a Seldarine god of the seas. Tav wasn’t particularly religious, but Sashelas was a god who concerned himself with creatures of the deep sea and he thought the gesture would at least make her laugh. The other reason Sashelas came to mind is because he was known to occasionally help those lost at sea. And right now, he felt that Tav could use some help finding her way back to them. As he thought about the small charm he carried, he started to feel slightly anxious. He hoped the gift wouldn’t come off as too forward.
From the moment they freed Thaniel from the grips of the shadow curse, it was as if he saw the entire world in a different light, a light that radiated from Tav. However, she was with Astarion now, and he couldn’t deny that they were good together. He had seen a difference in Astarion lately, no doubt he was also basking in her glow. But Halsin worried that her light was fading after being absorbed into so many others grateful for her help.
Tav had shown an interest in him the first night he stayed at their camp. His entire being at the time was still consumed with grief and guilt. As captivated as he was by her confidence and inviting smile, he denied himself the joy of being with her. At the time, he thought if he wasn’t completely concentrated on only lifting the shadow curse that the solution would be lost to him forever. Now, with Silvanus’ blessing and no small amount of help from his new friends, he was free at last to follow his desires.
The sound of angry screams startled him out of his thoughts. He heard cry after cry mixed with the sounds of something splashing into the water. Once he was closer to the riverbank, he was able to see Tav kneeling on the damp ground, her arm still bloodied from the fight. His chest ached at the sight of her. He wanted so badly to run to her and hold her in his arms, but he had no intention of crossing her boundaries. For now, he would have to contain himself and hope that her feelings for him had not fully faded away. He took a deep breath and called out to her from the bushes.
***
“Tav?” A soft, low voice called out behind her. She jumped straight up in the air and turned around.
“Oh. Halsin. You startled me.” Reaching up to quickly wipe the tears from her face, she grimaced when she brushed her likely broken nose. She desperately tried to regain some composure before asking, “Is everything alright?”
“No, Tav. Everything is not alright.” He responded softly.
Her stomach dropped, unable to hide the panic from her face. What else happened? Was someone else hurt? Was it Astarion? Did the fighting continue after she left? Oh Gods, she thought, a thousand scenarios racing through her head.
“You’re hurting. Is it so hard to believe that someone might be concerned for you?” Halsin’s voice remained soft and level.
His response caught her off guard. She pressed her lips into a hard line. Halsin meant well, but she was in the middle of a complete and total meltdown, she didn’t want anyone to see her like this.
“I’m perfectly fine, Halsin.” Her tone coming off much harsher than she meant it to.
“Forgive me, I meant no offense. Would you rather be alone?” He asked, seemingly unaffected by her cold response.
She stood for a moment looking into his concerned face. He’s only trying to help, she told herself. Looking at the dirt at her feet, she could see the small pools of her blood that had formed during her outburst. A couple more tears escaped from her eyes, quickly absorbed into the ground.
“No.” She croaked, her throat still aching from her screams. He smiled at her and walked over to a nearby log, taking a seat. Tav shuffled awkwardly in place before turning back to look over the water.
“So, what are you doing out here?” His voice was light and friendly.
“Skipping rocks.” She grumbled as she hurled another stone into the river. The ripples that spread out from its impact helped soothe her temper.
“Interesting technique.” He chuckled in response. Standing up from his perch, he grabbed a smooth, flat rock and tossed it across the water with a side armed throw. The rock skipped gracefully along the water at least 6 times before splashing below the surface.
“Show off.” Tav mumbled but she was fighting a smile.
“I used to do this quite often, back at the Grove. I find that watching the ripples along the water can calm one’s emotions better than any spell. There was little reprieve from my duties as Archdruid, but standing out in the water, skipping rocks, gave me at least a few precious moments of solace. To have so many looking to you for answers, even when you have none can be a great burden. Even more so for us elves. Others often see our longer lives as a reason to hold more knowledge but that is not always the case.” He paused for a moment, bending down to pick up another stone. “Something tells me that you are starting to feel that burden yourself.”
Tav said nothing in response. He was right of course, the last few days weighed heavily on her shoulders. From learning of the Elder Brain, to defeating Ketheric, to discovering the Dead Three’s involvement, to lifting the shadow curse, to arriving at Baldur’s Gate only to find that they owed their continued survival to a Mind Flayer. She barely had time to process one revelation before another one slapped her across the face. Yet everyone still expected her to recalculate their plans with a moment’s notice. It was exhausting. The sound of another stone bouncing across the river brought her attention back to Halsin.
They stood there at the water’s edge, watching the small waves slowly smooth back out into calm water. Tav looked down at the blood caked along her hand and arm. Now that she had calmed down the cut stung, badly. She tried to close her hand into a fist but drew in a sharp breath at the pain.
“Let me see your hand.” He offered his out to her. She eyed him, suspiciously.
“Humor me, Tav. I don’t like seeing you injured like this. Please.”
She held her injured hand out and placed it in his outstretched palm. He covered it with his other hand, healing the deep wound with a simple spell. Tav took her hand back and wiggled her fingers around, her range of motion restored. She noticed that the cut on her arm had also healed.
“Thank you.” She said quietly.
“It’s no trouble at all, my friend.” He held his hand close to her face. “May I?” She nodded.
Halsin gently placed one hand on her cheek and another on the back of her head. The warmth from his hands slowly faded into the warmth of his healing spell. Tav closed her eyes for a moment, suddenly feeling very tired. The pain slowly dissipated from her nose, and the fog in her mind started to clear with the pain. He slowly pulled away and Tav didn’t realize she had involuntarily leaned into him so heavily. She fell forward, but he caught her with one arm. Standing back up, she blushed slightly.
“Come and sit, let us talk for a while.” He held his other arm out towards the log where he was sitting earlier. She sat down on one edge, stretching her legs out in front of her, suddenly feeling stiff. Halsin took a seat beside her.
“I meant what I said, Tav. Back when I agreed to join your fight. I’m here to help shoulder your burdens and offer my counsel.” His voice was soft and gentle. “You don’t have to do all of this alone.”
Tav placed her hands in her lap and picked lazily at the flakes of dried blood on her healed hand. She felt tears coming back into her eyes.
“They all look to me, Halsin. Everyone here, yourself included.” Her breaths were shaking between words.
“Lae’zel was right. I have no right to call myself a leader, and I didn’t. Everyone just decided that it was me. I don’t want this responsibility.”
“Those who are suited for such roles rarely do. Please believe me when I say that I do not wish to add to your suffering. I trust you, and I trust your judgement. I had no intentions of joining you only to question your leadership.” He smiled at her.
“You and Jaheira have so much more experience than me. I thought maybe with the two of you joining us, the others would seek out other advice rather than just my own. But for some reason they still come to me. Saying it out loud sounds somewhat selfish I guess.” Tav wrung her hands in her lap.
“Your companions come to you because they trust you. As much as Jaheira and I are here to help, we can never fully understand what you are all going through. You do understand. You’re living it alongside them. They’ve watched you selflessly help them all from the moment you met them. I may not be able relieve it entirely, but you know what they say about a burden shared…”
Tav sniffled, more tears running down her cheeks.
“I have no idea what to do next.” She admitted. “I keep hearing Lae’zel’s words over and over in my head. She said my weakness would be the ruin of us all, and what if she’s right? Perhaps I did waste time and resources that could have been spent getting us close to the Absolute on so many others that we’ve met along the way.”
“Lae’zel’s words were harsh, yes. Like every one of our companions, her life has been upended by this Absolute plot. But she was forsaken by her queen, she’s found out that she has been lied to her entire life. All of her teachings, all of her dedication was a deception. Learning of all of this in such a short time has no doubt strained her mind. But I know that she realizes that without you, she would still be living that lie. In truth, I think she respects you a great deal but perhaps doesn’t know how to show it.” Halsin paused, studying her face for a moment before continuing.
“I won’t make excuses for her actions, but when you have known little kindness in your life, it is easier to assume that it is a weakness rather than a strength. Rather than a gift. Regardless of her behavior, you have continued to show her kindness, it will just take time for her to realize exactly what that means.”
Tav suddenly felt embarrassed about her behavior earlier. She shouldn’t have provoked Lae’zel further, her frustration had just gotten the better of her.
“As for your detours, allow me to speak on behalf of everyone who you ‘wasted’ time on. We are eternally grateful for it and would never consider it a waste.” He said softly.
Shame hit her like a punch to the gut.
“Halsin…I didn’t mean…” She stammered. “Of course, I don’t regret helping you I just…” Tears were starting to escape from her eyes again.
“I’m not cut out for this Halsin. I…I was no one before I met all of you. I’m not special I’m just…Tav. I don’t even have a family name anymore. I don’t belong anywhere.” She buried her face in her hands in one last attempt to hide her tears.
Halsin placed his arm around her shoulders. She let herself lean into him.
“Just Tav…” He started with a soft laugh. “'Just Tav’ has saved the lives of everyone in this camp dozens of times over. ‘Just Tav’ saved the entire Grove, full of druids and refugees alike, from Absolute cultists. ‘Just Tav’ swayed Khaga from the Shadow Druids’ influence, something not even I, her teacher, could do. ‘Just Tav’ banished a one hundred year long evil, something thousands of seasoned warriors could not manage. ‘Just Tav’ has brought together the most unlikely group of adventurers to form a true team, dare I say a family. ‘Just Tav’ has given hope to those who have had none for decades.”
Tav looked back up at him, biting her lower lip to keep it from trembling.
“‘Just Tav’ has seen more good deeds done in the short time I’ve known her than in a hundred years before. Do not sell yourself short, my friend. You may think you do not belong anywhere, but I believe you are exactly where you are meant to be. And as for your family name, I’d happily share mine with you if that’s what it took to make you feel that sense of belonging.” It took him a moment to register what he had said, but then his face suddenly turned a very bright shade of red.
“I…I only meant you’ve come to feel like family to me. Erm…I didn’t mean to…it’s just that I don’t have any left family either…” He took his hand off her shoulder and rubbed the back of his head anxiously. Tav couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the blushing display, shocked to see such rapid-fire embarrassment in him.
“It was a sweet gesture, really, but maybe we should hold off on any wedding plans until after we’ve destroyed the Elder Brain.” Tav teased, wiping her eyes. When she looked back at him, she could have sworn that she saw a small hint of sadness in his eyes. Oh. Her smile faded slightly.
Halsin suddenly seemed nervous, pulling lightly at some of the straps on his shirt. He ran his hand over his head and looked at the ground.
“I uh, I realize this might not be the best time to talk about it, but I would like to get something off of my chest, if you don’t mind.” He said softly.
“It’s the least I can do.” She replied with a smile, but her heart felt like it was going to burst out of her chest.
“I never properly thanked you for all of your help. Sitting here with you now, I realize that I owe so much to you.”
“You don’t owe me anything, Halsin. And you’ve thanked me constantly.”
“Perhaps, but I would still like to thank you again, earnestly.” He looked back into her eyes, causing her breath to catch.
“Thank you, for helping selflessly, for giving me hope again. Thank you for lifting the veil that covered my life for so long. No matter the circumstances that led to it, no matter what the future holds, I am grateful to have met you Tav.” He continued holding her gaze, tears welling up in his eyes.
“Think nothing of it, Halsin. I was happy to help, I wanted to help.” She smiled back at him.
“You are too modest, by far. You have no idea how extraordinary you truly are.” He reached over and took her hand in both of his. “But I do.” He paused, taking a deep breath.
“I have lived a long time and taken many lovers. My heart does not stir easily, yet it does now.”
Tav stared at him, unable to move, unable to even blink.
“What are you saying?” She asked quietly.
“I’m saying…I want more than fight at your side. I want to lay with you beneath the stars, I want to feel your skin against mine.”
Tav immediately blushed at his words. Staring into his beautiful face, she found it hard to string together a coherent thought. All of her not so innocent fantasies came rushing back to the front of her mind.
“I think you might feel the same,” he started again, “why else would you have been so concerned with whether or not I had a lover before? The party with the tieflings, I wanted nothing more than to accept your offer for companionship but…I wouldn’t allow myself at the time.”
“I…” Tav forced herself to let go of the breath she was holding.
“But more than anything, I do not wish to sour our friendship. If I have misjudged you, just say the word and I will let the matter drop. I just needed to know if there was a chance of us being something more.” He held her gaze the entire time he was speaking.
Halsin hadn’t misjudged her, not in the slightest. The truth is she had flirted with him shamelessly when he first joined their camp. He was handsome, kind, and loving, and Tav had come to really enjoy his company. She started to smile, but then Astarion came into her thoughts. She couldn’t bear the thought of hurting him. As much as she had come to like Halsin, she had fallen hard for Astarion.
“I’d be lying if I said I never thought of this Halsin but…” her guilt was eating away at her insides, “You know there’s someone else now.” He nodded solemnly.
“Astarion, yes. You have both bonded body and soul.” Halsin released her hand slowly. “There cannot be anything between us unless it is with his blessing as well. And I hope one day, his participation.” He gave her a playful grin. She finally realized what Halsin was asking.
“That is of course assuming you would want that.” He continued.
“I…” Her head was spinning again. Halsin was still holding her gaze, his eyes an earnest green sea threatening to swallow her whole.
“I will speak with Astarion.” She responded softly, her smile growing.
“Good…good.” Halsin breathed out a sigh of relief. He sat back up straight, rolling his shoulders and shaking out his arms.
They sat for a moment in slightly awkward silence, neither sure what else they could say.
“So…” Tav started, “About your family name.” Halsin blushed slightly at the mention.
“What is it?” She asked.
“Excuse me?” He still seemed a bit flustered.
“What’s your full name?” She asked.
“Silverbough. It’s Halsin Silverbough.” He replied.
“Well, nice to meet your acquaintance Halsin Silverbough.” She nudged him with her elbow.
“The pleasure’s all mine.” He flashed a dazzling smile at her.
“We should probably head back.” Tav suggested after a moment. Halsin stood up in front of her and held out his hand to help her up. Her legs were still so stiff that even standing with his help was difficult. He started to walk back towards camp but stopped suddenly.
“I almost forgot – I made you something.” He said, reaching into one of his pockets. It was a small, circular wooden pendant with what looked like a dolphin in its center. He gingerly placed the trinket in her hand.
“This is the symbol of Deep Sashelas, an Elven god of the sea. It is said he has dealings with the great monsters of the deep.” He smiled as he closed her fingers around it. “I thought it could protect you from those pesky krakens that haunt your dreams.”
Tav felt a huge smile spread across her face and couldn’t help but let out a small laugh. Krakens…the only thing she could think to share with him after he had told her so much about himself.
“It is also said that he can help those lost at sea find their way home.” His voice was much softer now. He gave her hand a light squeeze before turning to head back to camp. Tav turned the pendant over in her hand, it was beautifully carved. Truth be told, she had felt as if she was lost at sea, drifting aimlessly, but now it seemed like she might have a light to guide her back.
“Halsin, wait.” She called after him. He turned around and gave her a puzzled look. She caught up with him and wrapped her arms around his waist, giving him a quick hug.
“Thank you…for talking with me.” She said quietly as one of his arms came around her shoulders.
“Anytime.” He replied.
Tav let him lead her back to camp, taking time to consider their conversation, as well as the conversation she promised to have with Astarion.

Feeding Alligators 18 - Untitled Training Montage
You walk, walk, walk, walk, walk. Accidentally hit Lae'zel with a stick. Walk, walk, walk, jog, spar. Lae'zel is done with this shit.
Tumblr media
On AO3.
The dead boar stares up at you with glassy eyes, its tongue lolling out into the dirt. Hefty thing. Probably some good bacon on it. Lae’zel hisses something, and Gale answers. You’ve only got the one potion left, and you want to save it for whatever you find at that swamp.
Y’all move on.
***
You trudge for two days. You lose time twice more—only small episodes, once while walking (you crested a hill, and suddenly you were down it again) and once while taking a break on the side of the road (you’d gone to pee, and woke with your trousers around your ankles; you made vague hand gestures when you returned to quizzical looks at how long, you assume, you were gone).
You kick the panic in the face and wrestle that bitch to the ground. It’s easier to focus on the language lessons, especially now there’s no magical translation twisting in your brain. You can construct toddler questions after Gale introduces you to “this is” and “what is”. You decide to use it to maximum effect and really lean into the toddler aspect, asking “what is this” about almost every item you pass.
It’s hard to remember when you can’t write anything down. Gale corrects your pronunciation several, several times. Especially once Astarion involves himself, and takes up duties when Gale disappears off into the woods for a moment. You thought he was teaching you “stone.” But judging from the flat look from Gale once he returned (and an intrigued-bemused Shadowheart), and a hands pantomime, turns out he’d taught you the word for panties. In a posh accent, no less.
This fucking guy.
That bit brightens his whole day; he stops complaining for at least an hour.
By then, Shadowheart has dropped back enough to watch you for a second. And, in heavily accented English, she says, “Gofgel?”
“Goddamnit, Gale,” you say.
He gives an apologetic shrug from the front of y’all’s miscreant party.
That night, you notice Astarion watching you. Nothing overt—you only catch him the once—but you can feel eyes on the back of your neck. That and the others (Shadowheart) keep giving you pitying looks while Gale seems agitated.
Lae’zel finishes cleaning her owlbear head. Rubs the inside with something greasy and sets it to the side to dry.
On the third day, y’all get jumped. The bandits everyone had been alluding to. You try to hang back, but one of them (rightly) singles you out as the weakest link and comes straight for you. You try to hit him with the stick the way Gale showed you. But then Lae’zel darts in to cleave off a chunk of one of their faces, and the two of them stagger in, and you end up cracking her right on the shoulder instead.
She hisses nastily and wrenches the staff out of your hands. Leaves you standing at the edge of a fight, with nothing but the rock you pick up.
That night, after dinner, she steps in to loom over you. Arms crossed, sharp face stern. She snaps something.
Astarion perks up.
This alarms you.
She repeats herself, and then shoves your stolen staff at you and motions you to stand. You look to the others and they’re all resigned, glaring at Lae’zel, or scooching closer on a stool he found somewhere.
Are…is she gonna beat you up? Is this some form of corporal punishment?
Your palms go slick. Your legs wobble as you stand. They’re all watching; everyone here is so goddamn casual about killing, what would a lashing be but a form of entertainment?
You try hard to tamp the fear down, resist the urge to fall to your knees and apologize (uselessly), or start praying (better, but never enough). It’s mortifying how fast these responses flood back. You almost want to give yourself the ass beating.
But Lae’zel does not hand you a knife so you can go find and cut an appropriate switch (not too thin cause that hurts like a motherfucker, but not too thick so it doesn’t break your damn ass). Nor does she strip you down to your underwear to receive your punishment. Probably a good thing; fifteen years of freedom and an adult body later and you’d probably start clawing and biting, consequences be damned.
What she does, is pick up a stick herself and turn to face you.
When you hesitate, she says what you’re ninety-five percent sure is an insult, repeats her first words, and gestures you forwards.
When you finally do totter over, and she lifts her staff, it isn’t to hit you (you don’t flinch, you don’t. Goddamnit, goddamnit this stupid fucking place fuck the whole thing and fuck all these fucking people).
Instead, she sweeps the staff up into some sort of stance. Horizontal, held in front, hands a shoulders-width apart. She says a word. Waits for you to repeat it. Waits again for you to mimic.
Your face is hot. Fucking everyone watching. Why for fuck’s sake can’t they go find their own goddamn entertainment? Fucking watching you? Fuckheads.
But you recognize what she’s doing. Or intuit it, anyway. Weapons training. She’s teaching you how to actually use the damned thing.
That knowledge should soothe your out of control endocrine response.
It does not.
You proceed to follow her as she shows you various stances. There’s two crouching ones you can’t do very well because your bad knee screams when you try.  You manage to stop yourself from looking over to your goddamned audience. Watching you fumble. Watching your thick thighs and thicker trunk try to move with scrawny, ropey-muscled and lithe Lae’zel.
She either doesn’t notice, or doesn’t care about your self-esteem crisis. Just examines you, and raps an elbow or knee when you fuck up. Which is often.
You’re trembling by the time she lets you stop. Want nothing more than to collapse face first into your bedroll and let the sweet exhaustion of oblivion wipe you from consciousness. But she swats your arm again, harder. Motions you to set down the staff and follow her.
As she jogs.
You stare. She gets four steps, glances back, and you’re learning “Tsk’va” is definitely a swear. You also know what “come here” sounds like in Faerunese.
Your friendly onlookers give you a sort of “that sucks” wince. They make no attempt to intervene. Astarion gives you a jaunty farewell wave. You consider stealing his camp shoes and dunking them in the river while he’s not looking. Except the guy has a lot of knives by this point, so that’s probably a bad idea.
“Fuuuck,” you groan.
***
You’re out of shape. You know that. Had known it for years, in fact. You were never a runner. Even as a kid, you came in last place when the other kids would race. Not that you, a girl, were expected to win or even try that hard. Future mothers don’t need to be fast, they need to be sturdy enough for chores, need to be dutiful and obedient.
You didn’t realize you’d forgotten how to jog, though. Didn’t know that was a thing that could happen. The movement feels weird, your body disconnected and stiff and sloppy. Lae’zel mutters, but her frown seems more thoughtful, and less disgusted. She takes you for a few, gasping laps around camp. You consider veering right and disappearing into the night, never to return. Then you wouldn’t have to meet any of their gazes and know that they saw you being such a disgrace.
Once that’s done, Lae’zel still doesn’t let you stop. She moves onto strength exercises. Shocker! You can’t do a single push up.
So she has you lift and carry a bunch of water skins instead. By the time she’s done, your muscles ache all up and down your sides. Your shoulder blades are sore, your crotch feels sore for some godforsaken reason, and your hands and fingers are so weak, you can’t actually uncork the water skin she hands you.
She opens it without a word, and glares at you until you’ve drunken enough she deems it sufficient.
Then she makes you stretch.
Later, you have to palm your own bedroll back to flop onto it.
Your stays are just going to stay on all night. You have no dexterity for unlacing. Everyone else is bedding down. The fire burns low. And that’s why you jump when someone sits beside you.
The scent of sweat mixed with something delicate and floral washes over you. Shadowheart looks at you. Gestures to your stays. You try for a self-deprecating smile and hold up your useless fucking hands.
She nods like she’s expecting it. Asks you some kind of question. Goddamn dirt potion rationing. She repeats herself, points to the laces, motions to herself.
Help. She’s asking if you want help…getting out of the stays.
She’s been quiet around you. Speaking up mostly to snark (mostly at Astarion) (or to verbally gut Lae’zel). You can’t tell if she’s super reserved, or she doesn’t like you in particular.
It’s a tentative connection, you think. A simple offer. She’s watched you make an ass out of yourself all evening, and instead of making fun of you or using this to cast you out (fucking raspberries; raspberries and that sickly, fake lemon), she’s…offering to help.
That or she’s making sure you like her more than you like Lae’zel. Trying to one-up Lae’zel. Who the fuck knows.
You know this word. You nod. Say, in their language, “Help?”
She nods and makes efficient work of it. You try to hold still and not melt into a useless mess as your posture support disappears. Once it’s done and hanging open—your shirt is soaked in sweat, at least you have one, clean spare you got from those bandits you did absolutely nothing to help with.
“Thank you.” The other phrase you know.
Her smile is tiny and brief and just a bit detached. So you probably got the vocabulary right. Then she’s off, striding over to her own bedroll—the night is warm and they all set up out here, so you’re guessing it isn’t going to rain (except for Astarion, who always sleeps inside his tent).
You hope you won’t be as sore tomorrow (it’ll probably be worse!). The night air carries a heavy sort of fug that reminds you of humidity and growing things and Oklahoma. Y’all had spotted the swamp down the next rise; you’d reach it tomorrow morning.
You think your tiredness and achiness would make it easy to fall asleep. It ought to. But your body seems hell bent on revenge, and you sleep rough, tossing and turning.
And maybe something about that puts you more on edge than usual. Or maybe you just get lucky. Cause the next time your eyes crack open and you roll to your opposite side, you spot the teeth.
Adrenaline blasts right through the fatigue. You’re scrambling away before you even fully register what you see. Until he also stumbles back, and Astarion lifts both his hands in surrender.
