"The Grief of the Pasha" (1882 - Jean-Léon Gérôme) / "Monolith in Vigeland Sculpture Park" (1944 - Gustav Vigeland)
THE GRIEF OF THE PASHA: man just look at it. oh my god the composition, the colours, THE SUBJECT? holy shit. (anonymous)
MONOLITH IN VIGELAND SCULPTURE PARK: I've seen the sculpture once myself and it's truly astonishing. I don't have a deep analysis here, and neither does the article offer one, but all those bodies stacked on or crawling over each other really evokes some type of primal emotion I can't describe. It feels like looking at something forbidden, but you can't look away. It's morbid and beautiful at the same time. Despite literally being made out of stone, it gives the impression that the bodies are moving, struggling. The fact that it's carved from a single block of granite is also baffling to me. When you stand at the base, it's way too high to see the top. You need to be at a good amount of distance to get the whole picture, which is poetic in and of itself…. yeah. (@carryingpitchers)
("The Grief of the Pasha" is an oil on canvas painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme, better known here for a slightly different painting. This one measures 36 1/2 x 29 in (92.7 x 73.7 cm), and is held by the Joslyn Art Museum.
The "Monolith in Vigeland Sculpture Park" is a granite sculpture consisting of 121 human figures by Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland. The monolith stands 17m (55.8 ft) tall. Vigeland had an agreement with the city of Oslo after they demolished his studio that they would provide him a new one and inherit his works, resulting in the park this piece is in.)

#Throwback Thursday: Skittles and the North Sea
A #ThrowbackThursday blog, back to the 2019 Tall Ships Races. An annual celebration of Tall Ships and their history - exhilarating sailing, stunning cruises and celebrations across Northwest Europe. It is insanely expensive to sail on the official race legs, but that year one of the ships was making a ‘delivery voyage’ from Aberdeen in Scotland to meet the Tall Ship Races in Fredrikstad, at a fraction of the usual cost.

The Tall Ship Maybe at Liverpool. Pentax MV / Lomography Lady Grey 400
The ship in question was the 38m gaff-rig schooner Blue Clipper - sister vessel to the Tall Ship Maybe who I stumbled across in Liverpool just a couple of weeks ago.
My friend - a fellow Tall Ship appreciator - and I boarded our vessel at Aberdeen docks. Dwarfed amongst the metallic monoliths of commercial shipping, she was a welcome juxtaposition of wooden blocks and warm ropes against the unforgiving rust stained riveted walls of the freighters. An introduction to the crew, a tour of the boat and a safety drill later, sails were hoisted and we were heading out into the North Sea.
I’ll never forget the moment exciting serenity turned into stomach churning adrenalin, as we left the shelter of the harbour walls. The brutal Northerly wind slammed into the boat beam on. Our cabin was on the leeward side, that is the side away from the wind. Our bunks were at such a crazy angle, we were sleeping on the cabin walls more than the mattress.
That was the state of play for the next two nights, three days. The ship shuddering as wave after wave hit her sides, waves crashing and foaming over her bow. There was no longer any natural light in our cabin, just a dark, gurgling, watery vortex where the sky should have been. It was a new and exhilarating emotion, to feel so safe aboard a pitching and rolling sailing ship as we forged our way eastwards. The dark depths of the North Sea below us, the sails huge and full above our heads.
I was incredibly seasick. I lived on a couple of Skittles a day and spent most of the time being thrown onto the side of the ship, as I lay in my tumultuous excuse for a bed. It was surreal. Time stood still whilst the seas thrashed beneath me.
By the fourth day Norway was well within reach, the seas had calmed, and our cabin was filled with daylight. I crawled out of my bunk and up onto deck to discover a glorious summers day, the sea a sparkling, unbroken blue circle of peace. As if it had always been that way.

That porthole, sun on the canvas, the Tall Ships at Fredrikstad (iPhone photos)
I peeled spuds on the deck, took the helm during a moonlit night watch, and relaxed on the warm wooden deck as we glided past the Summer Isles towards Fredrikstad.
The simplistic horizon became fragmented by the indistinct masts of distant ships, growing into beautiful brigs and schooners of all sizes and nationalities as we started to gather outside the port, waiting our turn to enter the historic harbour.
There is so much more to tell that there isn’t really the time and space for here; entering the breathtakingly beautiful port of Fredrikstad, the Tall Ships celebrations, the train journey to Oslo, terrible £25 take-away pizzas and the The Kon-Tiki Museum. The Kon-Tiki Museum is hopefully another blog for another day, as that destination had been on my bucket list ever since I first read Thor Heyerdahl’s book aged 11.

My childhood hero - yes, my childhood hero is a raft! (iPhone photos)
The Tall Ships are visiting Helsinki in 2024. I LOVE Finland! By hook or crook I’m going to get there, ideally by Tall Ship but I’ll have to find out how much health I can recover once I start the neuro-physio…
…peace out ✌️

(I mean yeah i does, but theres a Difference, Please) LIKE IMAGINE. IMAGINE A SWEDISH BOOKER. ITS SO WRONG I CANT EVEN- (part 1/2, im kinda on a roll here)
full context this is in response to the people who literally can’t wrap their heads around yusuf being maghrebi even though a) that’s one of the few hard canon facts about his character and b) marwan kenzari is so it was like. a joke. about how white people are allowed hyper specific origin places (helloooo we have specific home towns of genova and marseilles for nicky and booker) where as people of color are viewed as monoliths and have their cultures stripped of individuality and diveristy
THAT BEING SAID BECAUSE IT WAS A JOKE BUT A JOKE WITH CONTEXT anyway swedansknorderlandse booker is Correct Canon what is booker doing but ice hockey and getting lost in IKEA??? buying aquavit from the  Systembolaget and drinking it STRAIGHT with some nice raw herring and an orange t shirt for Koningsday which everyone celebrates in Oslo? literally matthias schoenaerts even looks like joel kinnamon in a certain light and i’m pretty sure he’s swedish. the book at the start of the old guard was a  Jo Nesbø aka the world’s most famous french author

Domkraft Summon The Magic of Live at 'Day Of Doom’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
At the start of "The Rift" you can hear DOMKRAFT interacting with the crowd, announcing what they're next to play, which is immediately met by cheers of approval. In those opening seconds, my mind conjured the memories of a dozen festivals (including Psycho Las Vegas, where Domkraft made their North American stage debut).
You just can't beat the magic of "live" sometimes, especially when it comes to experiencing music from the heavy underground, where musicians pay such close attention to crafting their sound. Some would say they're downright fanatical about it -- tales of guitar players using bass strings, exotic pedalboards shaping the sound that emits from giant Sunn and Orange amps keyed into all the right settings. It's trivial to say that when it comes to doom, what you hear live is more than just a faithful reduplication of the record; it's the next level of the medium -- the slow 'n' low as it was meant to be experienced.
On December 11th, Magnetic Eye Records will cut loose their Day Of Doom live series with four bands who played the celebration of the label's first 10 years at Saint Vitus Bar in New York City -- including performances by Domkraft, Horsehunter, Elephant Tree, and Summoner. Coming at in individual CD and vinyl renditions, as well as a four-CD artbook (pre-order here). Today, Doomed & Stoned gives you a window into last year's epic gathering with "The Rift" from Domkraft's monstrous full-length debut, The End of Electricity.
Singer and bassist Martin Wegeland had this to share with Doomed & Stoned about the 11-minute monolith:
"There's a manic touch to this song that I still really like. Some kind of melancholic desperation on top of a good pummeling. I think we've played it at almost every show, and it has a pretty unique quality since it fits almost anywhere in a set, which is not usually the case with longer songs."
Give ear...

Domkraft - The Rift (live)
Some Buzz
Bassist/singer Martin Wegeland, guitarist Martin Widholm and drummer Anders Dahlgren came together in Stockholm, bonding over the likes of Spacemen 3, Monster Magnet, Sleep and Hawkwind, plus a fascination with trudging, 10-minute epics.
The band drew from the heaviest of their combined influences to craft a sound that blended towering dirges, mindbending psychedelia and hypnotic minimalism, embodied on their monolithic self-released debut EP in 2015.
Domkraft's full-length 'The End of Electricity' followed in 2016 on Magnetic Eye Records, landing on many year-end lists and leading to festival appearances at Desertfest and Psycho Las Vegas. Their sophomore LP 'Flood' arrived in October 2018, earning an 8/10 from Metal Hammer, 8.5/10 from Rock Hard, and 8/10 from Deaf Forever.
Tumblr media
The band also provided tracks for Magnetic Eye’s Pink Floyd Redux albums alongside Scott Reeder, ASG, Pallbearer, Ruby the Hatchet and The Melvins. 2019 saw the release of the 3-song Slow Fidelity EP, which included a 13-minute epic with guest vocals from Lea of Besvarjelsen, Marty of Slomatics and the legendary Mark Lanegan.
Domkraft has performed at Desertfests Belgium and Berlin, Blow Up in Helsinki, Northern Discomfort in Copenhagen, Psycho Las Vegas, Hostsabbat in Oslo, Fall of Man in Munich, Sonic Whip in Nijmegen and closed out the 2019 Sonic Blast Moledo Fest behind OM.
Their 'Day of Doom' (2020) live LP on the MER label will feature the following songs:
Tracklist:
  1. The Rift (live)   2. Through the Ashes (live)   3. The Watchers (live)   4. Meltdown of the Orb (live)   5. Flood (live)   6. Landslide (live)

The Human Condition in Oslo
Tumblr media
Some people have been asking what the heck this is all about. This is part of a substantial installation at Frogner Park in Oslo by Gustav Vigeland. The sculptures are in granite and bronze. They were completed in the 1940s but took decades to make. The installation’s centerpiece is called the Monolith. Adrian has many times dreamt of climbing the monolith - as have many others - fortunately or unfortunately there’s an unclimbable part at the bottom ie. you’d need a ladder to get to the main part with all the people piled on top of each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway the sculpture with the dude with babies is called “Man jager fire genier”. The direct translation would be “Man hunts four geniuses” but I think it’s more like “Man tries to shake off 4 evil spirits” . Why Vigeland chose to represent evil spirits through babies is not entirely clear.
