Welp, I just spent 4 hours mostly rewriting my intern’s paper. I kept most (but not all) of his organizational structure on a paragraph level. But only about half the remaining text is in his color now.

He’s not a bad writer, he’s just young and doesn’t have a good feel for scope. He swung wildly between too much and too little detail, which meant just a whole lot of it needed to be rewritten on a sentence-by-sentence level.

I rewrote the abstract, conclusion, some of the figure captions, and the entire discussion on uncertainty completely from scratch. I wanted to rewrite the intro but mostly didn’t because I also wanted to go to bed at some point.
