FF16 blogging: heavy spoilers for up through the events at Caer Norvent. (The beginning of the chapter “Wings of Change”).

Okay, some larger scale observations first.

A larger plot begins to emerge. In Benedikta’s flashback (and what a set of cartwheels to avoid showing nipple that was), Barnabas (I think was his name—the king of Waloed) said he wanted to unite the Eikons to fight the blight. And hey, like right after that, Clive absorbs the power of a second Eikon. So… that seems like where this is headed, generally. Collect ‘em all, go fight BBEG. Am curious to see how that plays out.

Even more curious about… erm… I don’t remember his name (it started with M), but The Dominant of Fire and his Attendant (“not his missus, but his pet coeurl, waitin’ to strike” per that lady in Lostwing, which was delightful). First we learn that he shouldn’t exist, then we learn he’s playing some kind of long game… shit is shady, but I’m not 100% convinced he’s a villain, despite the whole Joshua thing. Something weird be going on there, says I.

Lol at Clive basically stumbling into the world’s worst (and most magically-charged) love triangle (quadrangle? I dunno, get it girl). I will say for the game’s overall presentation, the absolute second Cid and Benedikta were in the same place, even before they really started alluding to it, the whole “these guys used to bone and it went badly” vibe was absolutely palpable.

Speaking of Benedikta, her boss fight threw me. Cos I got through the first phase like “huh, that was a little too easy” and then died and had to redo the second one (I ran out of potions). So she’s killed me and I think one other previous boss did as well, but so far that’s it. I’m getting the hang of the combat, to the point that I’m dealing with the ganking better (including the 2-on-2 fight with Garuda’s sisters and that one room in the Caer that’s just kiting like 9 guys around a table), and I’m excited to see what having a second Eikon opens up.

Okay, so Eikons. I think somebody said at some point there were eight? Which means nine, cos the second fire one. So, so far I know about: 1) Phoenix (Fire, formerly Joshua), 2) Ifrit (Fire, that mysterious guy), 3) Shiva (Ice, Jill), 4) Titan (Earth, that guy B’s apparently two-timing the King with), 5) Garuda (Wind, B), 6) Ramuh (Lightning, Cid), 7) Bahamut (element and dominant unknown). That leaves two more. I’m guessing Leviathan (Water) is one. Bahamut might be Holy, but I can’t think of what the other element would be at the moment.

A couple stray thoughts:

Enjoying the mini-boss enemies—the ones that don’t get a boss health bar but are a lot spicier than the randos you’ve been dealing with.

Lostwing is cool, but confusing, both in its layout and why everyone defers to that dude. Even the footnotes call him “inscrutable.” So like, pin in that for now.

Can we get some daytime scenes? This whole last bit was all very visually dark and IRL sunlight is a thing.

I still feel like the game hasn’t opened up yet. I know it’s not open world, but I mean like—access to the hunting board, more side quests, that kind of thing.

I’ll probably play more later, I just need a break for a bit.

Im gonna asterisk all my points cause i want it to be more organized. This is things i wish square would patch into the game, (15's way)

*first thing first, my roomate had a pretty solid point about the terrence dion goodbye scene. We care for dion, they showed us plenty of him, but terrence, not so much. (or their relationship beside that one kiss scene), but not about their pure bond- which i agree, for dion involvment in the ending, he should have more screentime, also with the involvement of the empire in the plot- it shouldve got the witcher 3 approach with the siri segments, show don't tell- i think there should have been a playable section in the bahamut vs odin, to get to know dion and his dynamics better. - that scene wouldve hit so much harder.and like my kiss argument my straight roomate agreed, that if terrence at least went back for a last kiss teary that'll pull the tear gear.

*joshua-oh god they let us play as him when he was a baby, why not just letting us playing as him when the player discover that he is alive, with jote and the undying, even for small section not wanting to reveal the cards too early. I think that should be a part of the game, the base game.

*jill- if it must be a dlc so be it, but at least add some cutscenes to when she talks about the iron kingdom, we as players would be so much more hyped to join her vengeance quest, she have the potential, you showed us the horrors bennedikta went throgh which is why at least i became to love her in the end, why not a main character like Jill, she have so much potential, if not making a palyable iron kingdom section (like before she reunited with clive maybe when she grew a bit)at least add the cutscenes square.

*for god sake make it possible to switch party members like you did in 15, L1+L2 is no combo anyway so patch that thing, it'll be so much more refreshing especially in the first half of the game when the quests are dry and the gameplay loop is repetitive.

*make the ambrosia quest mandatory, so many pple dont even know they can unlock the chocobo, or at least let the player know that the + green quest are important if they want to upgrade their gameplay. This isn't an mmo most single player players will look at that and thing that the + is an extra non important (had an irl talk with a friend who thought that)

*dlc- make it season pass only,one time pay and thats it. the game is 69.99 it shouldn't even need a dlc, but at least do a full on season pass in like 19.99 with like at least a cid dlc(dont yall wanna see his time with the empire, taking small mid otto gav and making the hideaway happen, also, i wanna know who from the boys have a spicy history with cid cause quinten suggested it and some other npcs as well), dion dlc(not only to get a look at the first official not hinted gay character's love life, no not for that-but i think we need a real look into the empire pre and post Annable. what we saw of his dad was tereible, i wanna know why dion is so atrached and looking highly of him, also like ive said in previous post i have to know dion pov on branded), jill dlc(cause bae need a redemption i fucking hate how square treat a strong female character once she's a love interest of the protag)

And a gav dlc, like something happens in the end that if you dont choose gav in the quest you wont know, but gav tells a bit about his past and i think especially since he is our main scout, dlc of him and byron maybe could be cool, after the kanvar event.

*enemies variety- im pissed theres no Cactaur hunt or tonberry. Like really really pissed. You kept the freaking flann but not the cactaur?!please for the love of fucking god patch them as a hunt or something.

*animation fixes- so many quests that had a higebuildup ended looking cheap. Fix that-asap, especially the quinten quest, it could have hit so much harder if the lipsync wasn't so cursed looking while the model was kinda static they had quest with proper cutscense like theo's, why not Quinten since its a freaking end of a huge chain quest. Also, in general fix the freaking lipsync that shit is cursed af.

In conclusion i know pple like shitting on 15 but i thino 16 will only bemefit from the 15 treatment, especially for the proce we as consumers payed.

This game doesnt feel finished, it feels rushed, i think 2 more years in the baking wouldve benefit it, but well its out, so why not patching it. I think it'll boost the sales cause now the game feel bare, and many things feel like placeholders. So i hope the team didnt pop the champagne yet.

I dont blame Yoshi p or the team, i think they did an amazing job, but i do blame square's higher ups tendency to announce and release a teiple A game too early, they need to understand that atech advances, it need and will take more time to develope a game. And if you want to take the money that you are asking for at least make sure that the dough isn't raw.

10:38 PM 9/16/2020 You can seep in all the nostalgic Final Fantasy music you want, but I'm just not feeling this new Final Fantasy.  When I think of Final Fantasy---what I PERSONALLY like about FF, it's that almost-steampunk mix of scifi and fantasy magic.  I love that modern, urban fantasy mixed with ancient magics.  That anachronistic amalgamation in the art style that can't really be placed anywhere.  

But even this costume design is so distinctly historic European.  With regular names like Joshua.  

The gameplay looks nice tho.

I don't think I'm interested in FF16.  Even if FF15 was disappointing, I loved Nomura's art style, the world design that is blatantly more than just "sword and sorcery" fantasy,...  I don't think I'll get Final Fantasy XVI.

11:04 PM 9/16/2020 Yes!  There it is!  Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition!  ;U;  I passed up getting DMC5 last Black Friday, partially because I was hoping for soem kind of special edition...And here it fucking is!  *o*!  Sure, I've alreayd spoiled myself on the stoyr by now, but I want to play this game!  I always have so much fun playing this game.  ;U;  Ohmyfreakinggawd!!!!!!!!!!!  ;U;!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ...Yeah, I know I saw someone mention a new DMC5 earlier, but it still makes me so happy.  ;U;  

IGN's stream is still off sync between the audio and visual.  Maybe I should switch to GameSpot's vid of the stream.

11:17 PM 9/16/2020 Oh, PS5, you do look nice.  But I promised myself that PS4 would be my last console.  I just have to face facts now: I dont' actually play videogames much anymore.  It used to be a big part of my life.  An enormous part of my identity.  And I didn't want to let it go.  But I have to face the reality.  My backlog didn't pile up worse than normal gamers' for no reason.  I don't feel motivated enough to engage in such an active passtime anymore.  I need passive entertainment now in my "old age".  And look how overactive I already am, just reacting, making fan-art, and writing essays about all that passive entertainment I've been absorbed into instead.  I guess I'm too old and tired for videogames.  ;_;  Well, playing them, anyway.  I have enough fun watching let's players, and I waste enough time engaging with fan-art/fandom with just that already.  If I added gameplay time, I probably wouldn't have time to eat/sleep. And I'm too old now to not sleep, regardless of how much I already stave it off.

Video Games Pt3: Video Game Challenge

I saw this list on Pinterest out of nowhere, and what better way to ring in the new year than with another questionnaire, about my favorite pastime! This is the spiritual successor to Part 1 and Part 2.

Day 1 - Very first video game: Pacman and/or Mortal Kombat and/or Samurai Shodown on arcade machines (way back in the day when laundromats had arcade machines and gumball machines and such in them--good times, good times U_U); Tetris on computers; and a buttload of PS1 titles (again: back in the good ole days when consoles came with promo demo discs--I had Frogger, Need for Speed, Medieval, and a bunch of others).

Day 2 - Your favorite character: Here’s my Top 10 Males post and Top 10 Females post.

Day 3 - A game that is underrated: I will preach the greatness of PS1′s Legend of Dragoon till my dying day. It was doomed to dwell in Final Fantasy 7′s shadow, which came out earlier that same year, and it’s a real shame, cuz LoD was E V E R Y T H I N G.

My favorite aspects of the game are:

Its lore and worldbuilding. On top of the fact that the premise of the game is could be an anime series in its own right, you just get SO EXCITED to visit each new location, and uncover more about the world’s history, and see the different architecture, technologies, cultures and different races (I LOVE the Winglies, of course). It’s actually a gorgeous game for its time.

The combat -- I STILL have some of the Addition patterns memorized to this very day! They get progressively harder as you level up, but once you get used to the timing you feel so dang good. Die, More and More!

The soundtrack and cutscenes. The NOSTALGIA? O_O Bruh. The story is just really good, and was the very first video game to make me cry when certain...events...happened. Play the game and find out for yourself!

Day 4 - Your guilty pleasure game: The Sims, Dragon Age...any and all EA games. Effing ashamed of myself every time I give that nest of corporate demons at Electronic Farts money. “Surprise mechanics” my arse. 

Day 5 - Game character you feel you are most like (or wish you were): Has Jar Jar Binks been in a video game yet? Then that’s me. XD But I wish I was most like Lara Croft, as explained in my Top 10 Females post.

Day 6 - Most annoying character: For females it’s Lightning from Final Fantasy 13, and for males it’s Vaan, from Final Fantasy 12. I don’t mind as much when supporting characters are effing annoying (Vanille, Hope, etc), but when it’s the MAIN protagonist?! WHY, Square Enix? WHY.

Lightning was just a negative nancy debbie downer. I wish they had swapped Serah and Lightning, I seriously do. I just couldn’t stand her dry and soulless personality. She wasn’t being edgy or bada** or cool or sexy or FANG or anything; she was just a bitter jaded unhappy wench.

And with Vaan I just effing hate that dude. Why was he even there? They tried so hard to make this pushy entitled kid relevant, but I was like no, the story could’ve easily been told without him, and I wish it had been; he’s a effing idiot.

Day 7 - Favorite game couple: Yuna and Tidus from FFX (hardest I ever cried playing a video game -- THE FEELS I TELL YOU).

Day 8 - Best soundtrack: I used to think it was Skyrim, but nope, it’s Witcher 1, 2 and 3. Just listen to ALL of the songs CDPR ever produced for the entire franchise, including all the unreleased tracks, and enjoy the eargasm.

Day 9 - Saddest game scene: Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice had me legit depressed for a good week. Get your tissues and holy water ready; it’s seriously effed up. The entire game is the saddest I ever played, jfc.

Day 10 - Best gameplay: Witcher 3, duh. Main quests, side quests, combat, dialogue, plot, graphics, worldbuilding, creatures, bosses, soundtrack, characters, Gwent, NEED I GO ON.

Day 11 - Gaming system of choice: Playstation for life. But the Nintendo Switch is effing brilliant, ngl; once they put Skyrim & The Witcher on it I was like SOLD.

Day 12 - A game everyone should play: At least ONE Final Fantasy game. There’s 15+, and Dissidia and Kingdom Hearts. It’s not just a game, it’s an experience.

As much as I rag on FF13 and FF15, they’re still admittedly LEAGUES better than a lot of other crap out there. I just happen to feel that Square Enix is out of its frikkin mind lately, and tbh I’ve been rapidly losing my hype for the FF7 Remake. I was never much of a FF7 fan to begin with, aside from being a rabid Sephiroth fangirl and watching Advent Children a billion times. But Square’s gotta be drunk as a skunk if they think I’m paying all that money for god knows how many of these effing “episodes” they’re gonna piecemeal us to dangit death with. HAYUL no. I’d rather not get too attached.

Day 13 - A game you’ve played more than five times:

Day 14 - Current (or most recent) gaming wallpaper: Huh?

Day 15 - What game are you playing right now: Speak of the devil, I’m replaying God of War for the zillionth time already.

Day 16 - Game with the best cut scenes: In terms of graphics and story impact IMO might be Red Dead Redemption 2. That game was frikkin gorgeous, and the story was SO DANG GOOD. Braithwaite Manor!? O_O

Day 17 - Favorite antagonist: For females it’s either Edea from FF8, or Yunalesca from FFX. For dudes it’s Sephiroth, from FF7. That man needs some serious counseling.

Day 18 - Favorite protagonist: Yuna from FFX for the ladies, and TW3′s Geralt of Rivia for the dudes. 

Day 19 - A game world you would like to live in: The more Middle Eastern-inspired scifi/steampunki-medievalesque world of Ivalice from FF12, or the medieval French/Swiss Toussaint from The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine.

Day 20 - Favorite genre: RPGs and JRPGs, and pretty much action-adventure games with swords and sorcery.

Day 21 - Game with the best story: Red Dead Redemption, which is a good thing and a bad thing. A lot of the time I felt I was watching a movie, rather than playing a game. But it was still an Oscar worthy movie. XD

Day 22 - A game sequel which disappointed you: Technically it hasn’t come out yet, but from what we’ve seen of the Nioh 2 beta release, omfg what’s going on? U_U Now, don’t get me wrong! Nioh 2 looks AMAZING. But....that’s cuz it looks exactly like Nioh 1, just with new yokai gameplay thrown in. o_O Uh...is this a DLC expansion pack or what? Cuz it sure ain't lookin like a full-fledged sequel! :P Dare I call it an asset flip. Come on, don’t do this; do MORE. Unless this is actually an expansion you’ll sell for half the price. ;)

Day 23 - Game you think had the best graphics or art style: For graphics it’s RDR2, but for most unique art style it’s always been Okami for me. <3

Day 24 - Favorite classic game: Spyro the Dragon. Their reboot for PS4 was AMAZING.

Day 25 - A game you plan on playing: Cyberpunk 2077. I’m so bummed, knowing the game’s been delayed to September 2020 instead of April, but oh well. As long as CDPR gives us that master-class level of Polish we all know and love from The Witcher 3, then take as much time as you need, I guess. At least they’re not like effing EA or Bethesda. XD

Day 26 - Best voice acting: BOY. Freaking iconic, Kratos. :P

Day 27 - Most epic scene ever: Ciri beating the absolute tastebuds outta Caranthir in TW3, not once but twice. Most OP Witcher EVER, girl; WERK.

Day 28 - Favorite game developer: Though I effing hate them, I’m still a Square Enix fangirl at heart. It’s just saddening to see this weird turn they’ve been making recently, with garbage like the Quiet Man, and especially with Final Fantasy, my favorite game series of all time. U_U I’m not looking forward to the FF7 Remake anymore, tbh. I just hope FF16 is more of a return to form.

Day 29 - A game you thought you wouldn't like, but ended up loving: Skyrim. I was never a big fan of Elder Scrolls games, and when Skyrim came out I was very meh at first. But then the mods started coming out for it and I was like wow. O_O

Day 30 - Your Favorite game of all time: Legend of Dragoon on PS1, Final Fantasy X on PS2, Skyrim on PS3/PC, The Witcher 3 on PS4, and The Sims on PC.
