For the anon Pokémon asks: which battle subway conductor is the cutest?
Okay, this may get long, so bear with me.
First, a little disclaimer: Ingo and Emmet both make me feel incredibly seen. I was born in 1989 and wasn't diagnosed with autism until 2009, and I never got to see characters like me. I'd see some who were similar to me, or some with things in common with me, but Ingo and Emmet feel like looking in a mirror to me, to the point that I don't go in the Submas tag because I've seen too many people perpetuating the ableism that got me bullied as an undiagnosed autistic kid. Every time an autistic or autistic-coded character is portrayed as "weird" or "off-putting" or "too intense" or "scary," it's repeating things that my bullies used to excuse their behavior towards me and essentially treat me and my autism as entertainment. Most people aren't doing this, of course, but since I'm in the process of working through a lot of that trauma, I choose not to take the chance of exposing myself to it because I'd rather heal instead of open old wounds again and again.
Anyway, with that said, I adore them both, but only one of them makes me act like a giddy teenager.
Tumblr media
I have the most ridiculous fictional character crush on Emmet. It's unreal. Part of that is likely the fact that if he was real we'd actually be extremely compatible, but unfortunately for me, he is not, and so I can't take him on locomotive photo charter dates and kiss him on the City Hall looparound on the 6 Train. That aside, here's what I genuinely like about the goober.
He's deeply passionate about what he loves.
It's that passion that often gets people like him and me labeled as "too intense," but when he likes something, he really likes something. Battling is like air to him. When you befriend him in Masters EX, you find he'll actually talk your ear off about battling if you give him the opportunity. He vibrates with excitement when he sees strong trainers.
Tumblr media
[Image description: Emmet and Ingo, two adult identical twin men with knife-shaped sideburns wearing exaggerated versions of railroad conductor uniforms, stare off to the left at people who are off-screen. Emmet, in a white uniform, is holding his hands at his sides but his hands are in an excited, almost 'grabby' position; Ingo, in a black uniform, also has his hands at his sides but his hands are balled into fists. Ingo's Excadrill, a Pokemon that looks like a mole combined with a tunneling machine, stands in front of him. End description.]
In this screenshot from Masters EX, Emmet and Ingo have just run into Steven Stone and Roark. Emmet is barely holding back, and you can tell by looking at his hands. He wants to battle now. It's delightful that he's in a franchise of video games where that passion is normalized and encouraged. (As long as he never visits Paldea, anyway. Nemona is proof of how well that would go.)
Battling makes Emmet genuinely so happy and excited and I love when people get that way about their hobbies. It's so nice to see passionate people. Emmet even says he's excited about it when you battle him in Black and White and beat him at the highest level possible:
"I am Emmet. I am a Subway Boss, but I lost against you again. But I feel good. Because it was very fun! You want to win, and I don't want to lose. That's real. When we clash in battles, I feel very excited!"
[Source]
He lives for this, so much that even losing a really intense, serious battle feels good. And it's a delight. But, of course...
Tumblr media
[Image description: Emmet, described above, claps his hands together excitedly and says "Winning a serious, hard-fought battle is the best feeling in the world!" with a huge smile on his face. End description.]
...he, in his own words, likes winning "more than anything else."
He's verrrry direct in his communication...but also verrrry supportive.
Autistic folks are often told we're too blunt, and to neurotypicals, who are used to saying things more indirectly, we can come off as a bit...too direct to them, to say the least. Arguably the best example of Emmet doing this is in the PokeSpe manga, where he just says things without a filter.
Tumblr media
[Image description: a manga panel in which Emmet bluntly tells trainer White, "Yes, we're studying you as an example of a trainer who gets overwhelmed and loses every single match." The next panel leads off with Ingo saying "That's not nice, Emmet..." End description.]
But that bluntness isn't intended maliciously, he just has no filter and says what's on his mind. In reality, he's delightfully supportive and friendly, and that honesty leads to the most wonderful exchanges with him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image description: two screenshots of Emmet from Pokemon Masters EX, smiling softly. His dialogue reads, "Hi, Steph! Your smile is always the best. Perfect! Whenever I see you, I can't help but smile, too! I'll have to make sure my smile is just as good as yours!" End description.]
As a side note, this dialogue has been destroying me for over two years now, and every time I boot up the game and he says this I feel my face get warm. He's actually helped me stop being self-conscious about my smile.
He has a habit of listening in on things, even if he has no intention of gossiping or anything. He just likes knowing stuff.
It's a habit he seems to share with his brother, but Ingo is significantly less obvious and more apologetic about it. Emmet's just really funny about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image description: two manga panels and one screenshot from Masters EX. The first manga panel shows Emmet marching over to White and Bianca as they have a discussion, saying, "I'm overhearing an interesting discussion over here. It seems profound, so I'm going to stand nearby and listen in. Oh, don't let me distract you. Go on. Keep talking." The second panel shows Emmet cupping his ear with his hand and still attempting to listen in on the discussion from one subway car away, with Ingo standing behind him. The screenshot from Masters EX shows Ingo hiding his eyes with his hat and saying, "I apologize for eavesdropping, but we happened to overhear your conversation at the Pokemon Center" as Emmet stands beside him, hands on his hips and smiling with no shame. End description.]
He doesn't use the information maliciously, and a lot of the time he doesn't even use it at all. He just enjoys hearing these things and knowing all sorts of weird drama is going on elsewhere. It's like when you find out about drama in a fandom you're not in and you read the posts and eat popcorn. It's great.
He likes his work uniform because it helps his posture.
As a fellow "leans forward too much" autistic, this one really resonates with me and I love it.
Tumblr media
[Image description: A screenshot of Emmet in Pokemon Masters EX. He's standing straight up and holding the brim of his hat with his hand. His dialogue reads, "Wearing it gets me motivated, of course! It also helps me stand up straight and tall!" End description.]
He stops scripting when he gets to know people better because he's able to trust them.
Notice how his dialogue in BW and BW2 is on the Battle Subway - "I'm Emmet. This is my job. I like doubles. This is why I like doubles. Here are the safety checks." He's scripting around people he's not familiar with, and it's the sort of thing that gets autistic people labeled as "robotic" by people who don't know it's a way to help us maintain some semblance of control over an unfamiliar situation. The preprepared dialogue is a coping method in an ableist world. But when you get to know him in Masters, the scripted dialogue shows up a lot less. He's able to talk genuinely and excitedly to you, because he knows you're safe to be around and you're not going to judge him for who he is. That hits me hard.
He has the most adorable goddamned laugh in the world and it kills me on the daily.
This is a lot more in line with my personal tastes, as everyone who knows me well knows, but that damn laugh makes me all fluttery inside and weak in the knees. And he does it a LOT.
This update to Masters EX, where the characters laugh if you tap on them on the upgrade screen, destroyed me, and multiple people were apparently waiting for me to find it and die because I'm really predictable. I may or may not regularly pull the screen up just to poke at him and hear this. It's...not fair.
This one is...also unfair. I won't elaborate in public on what I think when I hear it because it's embarrassing.
youtube
So, uh...yeah. I really, really like Emmet a lot. I'm really normal about Emmet. I promise.

a ryden theory
courtesy of me and @a-detuned-radio
we’ll keep it to events related to ryan & b or we’ll have a never ending post and I don’t think anyone wants that.
2004 - brendon meets ryan, becomes lead singer of the band. we know very little of this period of time so i couldn’t say for sure if anything happened between that and 2006 but.. safe to assume that brendon was starstruck & probably developed some kind of crush on ryan.
2005 rolled by, and so did afycso. nothing much there either, but then came 2006.
2006 started off as the year of jac vanek and audrey kitching, girlfriends of ryan and brendon respectively. they’re known to have exchanged messages about how one of them turned the other gay, though I can’t vouch for the veracity of these screenshots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
either way, both relationships were short lived and ended in early 2006, which means that in the summer of that year, they were both decidedly single. ryan was probably still recovering from his break up, and brendon rekindled his flame for ryan (ok, i say flame but god knows how infatuated he was)
and then, june 24th, 2006, it’s myrtle beach. we all know those interviews
from greta, who was on tour with them:
Q: Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
A: On the 2006 Panic Tour, we played the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach [JUNE 24TH]. After the show, most of the bands and crew walked a mile to the beach and, having not brought our swimsuits, decided to swim in underwear or totally nude. Bob and I opted to skinny dip and, at one point, he was trying to get back to the shore but the waves were crashing over him and he was gasping for breath. I yelled to him, ‘Bob, are you going to live? As much as I want to help you, we are both naked so I can’t.’ (Would have been far too awkward). Thankfully, he survived in one glorious piece.
or dream, one of the dancers:
Sat, June 24th, 2006
It’s our last night in Florida and let me tell you… this finally turned into a crazy rock tour… lots of shenanigans happened tonight… but I’ll save this story for the memoirs! Every night I stand on stage and tell the crowd that Brendon is a virgin… let’s just put it this way… it ain’t true!!!!
and more famously, two of ryan’s lj entries.
Sat, June 24th, 2006
I’m the ghost in the bed.you can touch because i can’t rest. and the lights are always off so I can mold you in the dark.i can shape and pretend.”i just want to have a good time, just like everybody else, but i don’t want to fall apart”
Sun, June 25, 2006
The moon bred new Atlantic life tonight.the salt burned you right out of my eyes.and secrets we’re not proud of were taken with the tide. We were all newborns with blurred vision and no sense of direction.
Today I saw cancer, cigarettes and shortness of breath.
this is why I walk to the ocean.swim with jellyfish.I may never get this chance again.
this is why if you want to kiss you should kiss.
If you want to cry you should cry, and
if you want to live you should live.
You don’t have to love me. You already did. At least enough to keep me smiling from South Carolina to Virginia.it’s for lovers (orjustfriends)
This is why I do it.
now, i’m not saying it was about brendon, but ryan definitely had a fling with someone then. the first post suggests that he wants to forget about his recent breakup, and that someone can help him do so by, well, you know, sleeping with him. he doesn’t seem to want to be emotionally involved, though.
from this point on, they could’ve had a friends with benefits situation going on all through the summer, which would make sense with all the summer references throughout panic’s discography. (namely “in the middle of summer,” “summer’s on its deathbed,” etc)
on we go to late august 2006, their triumph at the vmas. that’s where ryan met keltie for the first time, immediately sending her a note inviting her backstage. brendon’s performance was shaky that night, either because of the pressure on him, or the fact that he could tell ryan was interested by keltie. (or both!)
in august 2007, on ryan’s birthday, keltie throws him a tone deaf party in new york city, which is famously followed by him flying to seattle & a fan getting a picture of him and brendon together. now, what’s important to know is that they did have a show on september 1st, and getting there made sense because the rest of the band already was.
however, my theory would be that that’s where ryan finally told brendon just how serious about keltie he was, and that their casual relationship would have to end there. - which would coincide with this video  of brendon breaking down in seattle during the song casual affair
over the course of 2008 - nothing in particular to say, apart from the fact that ryan was becoming increasingly dependent on keltie and that their relationship clearly wasn’t healthy.
kerrang! interview from 2008 (ew)
Tumblr media
and something from keltie herself, from her 2010 autobiography “rockettes, rockstars and rockbottom”
“I was a girlfriend and a taskmaster. I kept him focused, and I sewed his clothes and managed his calendar. I made sure someone came to clean the house. I did his laundry, I paid his bills on time, and I paid my bills on time but for a completely different address. I called his family with updates and sent birthday cards when necessary. I did this because I loved him and he needed help. I did this because it was only after all these things were taken care of, that [Ryan] and I could snuggle up and just be ‘us.’” (RRR, p126)
this.. made ryan feel like shit, like he was pretty much useless and unworthy of love - hence, she had the world. (who could love me? i am out of my mind)
what’s important to note is that even though she was probably in love with him by this point, she remained very much in love with her previous boyfriend at the beginning of their relationship and knew ryan was more infatuated than she was.
on brendon’s side, he had met sarah (who was dating someone else at the time) in 2008. one theory could be that he liked her so much partly because he knew ryan wouldn’t move on from K.
in february 2009, ryan and keltie broke up. to me, this is when ryan and brendon fell back into old habits, brendon probably was just happy about it and didn’t question it too much.
and then, somewhere between then and july 2009, brendon realised that ryan was still trying to get keltie back - and he couldn’t understand why. she’d made him feel shitty, made him dependent and had disappointed him time after time.
this - the fall out. this was when it couldn’t go on anymore, when brendon realised that ryan could never see him, love him like that. he probably started to grow distant & ryan started writing songs with jon, which ultimately caused the split of the band in july 2009.
cape town wasn’t necessarily the breaking point, although ryan’s fling there mustn’t have helped.
and that’s all i have for you today, folks. the information i have lines up with this.
tl;dr: brendon had an unrequited crush on ryan, which was intensified by the friends with benefits situation they had going on through the years. ryan didn’t feel the same way.

Evolution of Digital Art
The history of web based art communities goes back to the advent of the internet and is full of highs and lows.  Art centric websites actually existed since before digital images were even being uploaded to the web, and in fact even before web browsers were publicly available.  On the early internet, text only bulletin board systems (BBS) emerged as a way for people with similar interests to communicate online.  “The Thing,” created by Wolfgang Staehle in 1991, was one such BBS.  The board was focused on art and art criticism, and while there were still no actual images on the internet to share, members could openly post messages discussing art and culture, as well as share announcements for upcoming art gallery events.  Along with BBS’s, Usenet newsgroups and listserves were common forms of interaction over the web. Below is an image of the original version of “The Thing” displayed in the New Museum in NYC.
Tumblr media
In 1992, the first photo was uploaded to the web by Tim Berners-Lee, who was also one of the folks who invented the internet.  The image was of “Les Horribles Cernettes,” an all female comedy band, which can be seen below.  In 1993, the first web browser that could display images and text simultaneously in the same window was released under the name “Mosaic.”  Prior to its release, images had to be displayed in a separate window from text.  Mosaic popularized the world wide web and is attributed with leading to the internet boom of the 1990’s.  The release of this browser also made the creation of all of the following art sharing websites possible.
Tumblr media
The first version of GeoCities was launched in 1994 by David Bohnett and John Rezner.  GeoCities allowed users to easily create their own web pages and place them into categories according to their content (called cities and named after real cities, hence the name of the site).  The cities for topics of art were SoHo and Lofts for visual arts and writing, Broadway for theatre and performing arts, and a variety of cities for different genres of music.  Using GeoCities, users could make a personalized page to showcase their art and, using the cities feature, both share their page and find the pages of other artists.  GeoCities required some web design knowledge to get the most out of it (basic HTML was probably sufficient for most users, though).  A similar web hosting service, Angelfire, launched in 1996.  GeoCities shut down in late 2009 (2019 in Japan), while Anglefire is still around.
Early dedicated art sharing sites included Rhizome, which was established in 1996 as a digital art community and is not only still active but is an affiliate of the New Museum in NYC, and Wet Canvas in 1998.  Wet Canvas is formatted as a standard forum site with various content channels and subforums for sharing and discussing different forms of art and currently has over one million members.  The drawback of this kind of site is that users must make individual threads to share content and several layers of links must be navigated to reach the threads, which must be individually opened before being able to see any images.  Individuals unfamiliar with this type of forum may find the interface difficult to navigate.  The benefit to this format is that the poster’s art is displayed isolated from other pieces in a message thread that allows other users to directly post responses.
One of the most well known hosting sites for art, DeviantArt, was launched in the year 2000.  Initially called “Deliciously Deviant Deviant Art!” the site was focused on art made for customizing (or “deviating,” thus the name) a user’s desktop such as wallpapers and skins for browsers and media players.  This initial focus on digital visual customization may be what led to the site’s more immediately engaging design with even early versions of the site displaying thumbnails of recent submissions and a daily list of curated favorites.  Each user also received their own profile page, which lacked many options for customization, but placed all of a user’s submissions into a gallery that made browsing artwork quick and simple.  Each user page and even each individual submission had a shout board that allowed users to talk to each other or leave praise or criticism for artists.  User pages also contained a section for showing submissions that the user had added to their “favorites.”
The visual nature of the site was naturally a benefit to getting more eyes on submitted artwork faster, and the favorites galleries helped works gain popularity even more quickly.  If DeviantArt has one major drawback, it is that outside of a user’s gallery, they have no control over what other submissions may appear alongside their own.  As the site caters to all ages, quality varies widely, as does the content of the submissions.  While outright pornography is banned, risque material may appear unfiltered on the home page.
In 1964, Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase, “the medium is the message.”  This means that the way in which media is delivered, the medium, becomes part of the message of the content and is just as important if not more so than the actual meaning or message of the media.  Compare the presentation of a work of art in a museum to how it may be displayed on an art sharing website such as DeviantArt.  In a museum, each piece is generally displayed in isolated, centered vertically at eye level, and presented in ideal lighting conditions.  The works in a collection are curated and typically arranged by a theme, such as period, style, or artist.  Access to the works is gate kept by ticket prices, hours of operation, and geographical location.  A work’s presentation within a museum or physical gallery at all immediately elevates its value.  Below is Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch” on display in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam as an example.
Tumblr media
In contrast, imagine browsing an art hosting or social media site’s most recent images.  Rembrandt is displayed surrounded on all sides by anime fanart, photos of food, screenshots, and women in bathing suits.  Below is a screenshot of DeviantArt’s homepage, modified by me to illustrate this point.  All of these are displayed at the same size and delivered as having equal value by the formatting of the site.  The Rembrandt may still catch the eye, but the medium of delivery affects the viewer’s perception of the quality of the painting.  “May” is also a keyword in this context, because the sheer volume of submissions on screen that become replaced with every reload of the home page make it easy for works to become lost in the sea of art.
Tumblr media
This effect of digital sharing sites on the perceived quality of art has also had an effect on their monetary value.  The aforementioned abundance of artists on these platforms has similarly driven prices down.  A work hosted in a gallery may have a listed price of hundreds of dollars; on a site such as DeviantArt, it’s possible to commission a piece of custom art of the same level of quality often for under a hundred (not accounting for the cost of shipping in the case of a physical piece, for in the digital age a consumer could commission an artist from halfway across the world).  This effectively creates a gig economy for artists in which they must attract the attention of consumers amid a massive supply of other options and set their prices in accordance with what others charge to keep customers from choosing another artist of comparable quality offering services at a lower price.
However, it seems in general that the art market has been moving more towards e-commerce than brick and mortar establishments.  According to a study commissioned by Invaluable, 22.7% of art consumers found their purchases through art sharing sites or social media, versus 20% via galleries and about 16% via galleries.  This is especially true for younger generations;  between 33 and 44% of millennials (variant on age) reported discovering new art through some form of social media.  Forbes reports that in-person art sales went down in 2015 after reaching an all time high in 2014, while online sales rose greatly.  They projected that this year, the market for art sales online will reach $9.58 billion.  Below is a graph I made of actual online art sales from 2013 to 2018, along with Forbes’ projected value for 2020.
Tumblr media
The most significant shift for the production and consumption of art online in the last decade has been the website Patreon, which was founded in 2013 by Sam Yam and Jack Conte.  It is a platform that allows artists and other creators to offer a subscription based content delivery service.  The creator earns monthly or by-upload income from their subscribers, or “patrons,” effectively allowing them to make the content that they want and get paid to do it by individuals who appreciate what they produce.  The site offers subscription tiers that the artist may enable to offer patrons rewards based on the amount of their monetary contribution.  Some artists choose to use this feature to provide personalized art to their patrons, while others allow full access to their content for subscriptions of any value.

Stargazer’s World 10th Anniversary
Yes, you’ve got that right, this very blog is now over 10 years old! When I started this blog in August 2008 I never would have thought that it would still be a thing in 2018. But now, 10 years later it s still a thing. It’s probably not as popular as it was around 2010, but it’s still alive and kicking. Over the last 10 years I’ve seen many RPG blogs come and go, and some of them I miss dearly. Unfortunately many RPG bloggers have lost interest in blogging or moved their activities from their blogs to social networks. The times are changing.
<
p align=”justify”>Interesting facts and statistics During the last 10 years 2038 posts have been written by 20 different authors. These posts have been commented on 7989 times. The most popular post was Roleplaying City Map Generator from 2009 with about 173,000 views! The most popular review during these 10 years was my review of the Iron Kingdom Core Rules which has been read 9,046 times. The most-read interview was the one with Marc Miller (which I am very proud of). It was viewed 1736 times.
<
p align=”justify”>Personal Stories Aside from writing about my favorite hobby I also used this blog to write about personal issues, mostly my struggle with depression and anxiety. Because of this I might have lost a few readers, but I found it extremely important to write about my mental health problems. For one it raises awareness and secondly it helped me to cope with it better.
<
p align=”justify”>The Future I really hope this blog will have one. If you have followed this blog for a couple of years you might have noticed that we’re not posting as regularly as before. A lot can happen over 10 years, team members joined, others left us. More often than not pesky things like work get in the way.  But I am not willing to give up blogging anytime soon. I might not be as prolific as I was before, but I’ll keep writing posts as long as it’s fun. At this point I wouldn’t be that surprised if there’s a 20th anniversary in this blog’s future.
<
p align=”justify”>Thanks! First and foremost I want to thank you folks, the readers of this blog. I would probably keep writing even if no one reads it, BUT it’s much more fun, if you get feedback! I also want to thank everyone who has ever written a post on this blog. You definitely helped to keep the blog alive. I have special thanks for Zachary Houghton, Phil Ménard and Berin Kinsman, who helped me a lot finding my own voice back in the early days of the blog!
P.S.: The featured image above is from the video game Fallout 3 by Bethesda Softworks is a screenshot taken during the quest “Growing Up Fast” in which the protagonist celebrates his 10th birthday. I found it quite fitting.

What Will Be the Ripple Effects of the ICA Boston's Expansion Across the Harbor?
New Post has been published on https://cryptnus.com/2018/06/what-will-be-the-ripple-effects-of-the-ica-bostons-expansion-across-the-harbor/
What Will Be the Ripple Effects of the ICA Boston's Expansion Across the Harbor?

BOSTON — In its boldest move since it relocated from Copley Square to its current home in the now highly developed Seaport District 12 years ago, Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) has leapt across the harbor, and developed a substantial new gallery space in the Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina in East Boston.
Though open to high-level donors the night before, to museum members on June 30, and to the general public on July 4, the ICA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for and preview of the new building on June 22 for the press as well as for its staff and volunteers — closing the main ICA building in order to ensure that those involved in the institution’s operations could attend. Many local members of the press and gallery and preparatory staff took the ICA up on the offer, coming to cheer on the ICA’s director of 20 years, Jill Medvedow, as Boston’s Mayor, two local City Councilors, East Boston’s State Senator and Representative, and the CEO of the state’s Port Authority all expressed their faith in the value of the project to inspire budding young East Boston artists. They also issued a stream of formal announcements so exhaustive that it seemed plausible at times that the distribution of proclamations was some kind of conceptual art project.
The interior of the ICA Boston’s new Watershed space (photo by the author for Hyperallergic)
The new 15,000-square-foot gallery space, aptly named the Watershed, is anticipated to be a critical turning point in East Boston’s cultural life. Unfinished, said numerous ICA staff members, until literally the day it opened, it certainly promises to keep its closest (boat-dwelling) neighbors on their toes. There’s no question that the shipyard is brimming with a level of excitement unseen in the area since the launch of the first restaurant in the marina, Scup’s in The Harbour, a cheeky hot dog stand and breakfast joint that was beloved by locals during its too-brief lifespan of  2009 to 2011.
The main inaugural exhibition in the Watershed, a collection of video-based works by Los Angeles artist Diana Thater about how delicate our ecosystems are, does not exploit the space’s capacity or setting as much as an inaugural show could have. But there’s nothing wrong with putting the emphasis on the space itself for its debut. Some simple details of the building’s previous industrial uses have been carefully retained, and Thater’s introduction of strong shots of color into the gray and brick-hued warehouse space is impactful — especially in the part of the space identified as the Harbor Room, where a window casts striking blue light onto visitors. The marina’s history and some imagery of East Boston shot by local teens is also showcased in two smaller installations.

In terms of accessibility, restrooms are all wheelchair friendly and include gender-neutral options. All museum signage is bilingual, in English and Spanish — an important recognition of the current demographic makeup of East Boston, where, according to 2015 statistics, just under 55% of the population is Hispanic. (Equally important is the fact that Boston art lovers are keeping a sharp eye on this issue — the dearth of Latinx representation at the ribbon cutting ceremony was called out within moments by the ICA’s Instagram followers.)
(screenshot by the author)
Another key piece of accessibility is the ICA’s commitment to waiving admission to the Watershed in perpetuity. The institution also prominently placed links on the gallery’s web page (perhaps representing commitments to collaborate as well?) to local cultural organizations and artists associations, including Harbor Arts, which already uses the marina as a presentation site for its work.
The Watershed is accessible by boat for those coming from the ICA’s primary galleries — following exactly the same trajectory as was used to shuttle visitors witnessing 2015 Foster Prize winner Sandrine Schaefer’s performance piece “Wandering with the Horizon.” It’s also about a 10-minute walk from Maverick Station on the MBTA’s Blue Line, which is likely to be the route taken by most coming from within East Boston to visit the new gallery.

The last busy commercial enterprise you pass as you leave or enter Maverick Square to walk to or from The Watershed is the Colombian restaurant El Rinconcito Colombiano on Sumner Street. On the day of the Watershed preview, it was jam-packed with families getting a late lunch at 2pm, and still just as jam-packed at 5pm. The door was wide open to the fresh sea air and releasing tempting smells of Colombian cooking along with music and exuberant conversation. But no one inside was even aware of the new ICA building within spitting distance.
When asked if she’d heard about it on the radio or in any local newspapers or even by word of mouth, Marcella Munera, the daughter of El Rinconcito Colombiano’s owner, looked confused. She had no idea the ICA had any plans to do anything in East Boston, let alone build a part of a museum in the area. It was enough of a head scratcher that she needed it explained twice, before she could answer the question of whether that was something she felt she should have known about. “Yeah,” was the answer. “I feel like I should definitely have heard about it if that was going to be happening here. I mean if that is happening here. But I didn’t.”
To be fair to a museum that does a great deal with a relatively small staff, maybe it’s a lot to ask that they advertise on Spanish language radio or just walk up and let the folks hanging out at El Rinconcito know immediately how welcome they are. But once the ICA management gets a whiff of the food there, it’s likely to make the top of their outreach list (and perhaps their preferred caterer list).

Another thing that could be added to an ICA list of some kind was expressed via a grassroots request along the pathway between the ferry dock and the Watershed. There, hanging on a traffic cone, was a handmade plea that the ICA think not only about how to get art over to East Boston, but how to help ensure that any new development spurred on by their investment in the area doesn’t displace the art and, much more importantly, the artists already there.
Whether or not the ICA’s move to East Boston will coincide with as radical a shift in landscape and demographics as its 2006 move to South Boston did in that area, the ICA does reportedly have plans to do work with the existing community through associations with the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and the East Boston Social Centers. But the question of whether the Watershed will become a site of increased opportunity, or the end of an era for East Boston artists,(and for many vulnerable immigrants living in the area) is too hard to predict just yet. Though it feels like a watershed moment, it’s too soon to say for whom.

The ICA Boston’s new space, the Watershed (256 Marginal Street, East Boston, Massachusetts), opens to the public on July 4. Its inaugural Diana Thater exhibition continues through October 8.

Hyperallergic: Hear the Voices of Brooklyn’s Diverse Past Through a New Digitization Project
Lucille Fornasieri Gold, Prospect Park trumpeter (1975) (courtesy Brooklyn Historical Society)
Although a relatively small institution compared to the goliaths of New York museums, since 1973 the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) has maintained one of the city’s few cultural oral history programs. Now nearly 250 of its 1,200 archived interviews are available to hear online through the Oral History Collections portal launched last month.
“Oral histories often help fill the holes of traditional archives, which rely on material or paper-based text,” Zaheer Ali, the oral historian at BHS, told Hyperallergic. “Not everyone has had the chance, resources, or opportunities, to leave such a trail. And those who do have tended to come from the more privileged parts of our society. Oral histories allow people whose lives may not be otherwise chronicled to create a historical witness of their experiences.”
The Brooklyn Historical Society Oral History Collections portal (screenshot by the author for Hyperallergic)
Among the collections in the initial launch are interviews from the 1992-93 AIDS/Brooklyn Oral History Project recording the impact of the epidemic on Brooklyn communities, the 1994-95 West Indian Carnival Documentation Project on Brooklyn’s West Indian community and Carnival participants, and the 1973-75 Puerto Rican Oral History Project, featuring Puerto Rican immigrants who arrived in Brooklyn between 1917 and the 1940s. There are themed audio sections like veterans and wartime, sports and leisure, community activists, civic leaders, businesspeople, and arts and entertainment. Each area has the interview subjects arranged alphabetically, with the individual interview pages including transcripts where available and biographical details.
“To collect someone’s oral history is to affirm the historical value of that person’s life, and to be able to present that oral history, in his or her own voice, is to affirm the power of a person to speak for him or herself,” Ali stated. “The historical value of oral histories therefore is found not just in the words that are spoken, but the ways those words are spoken, the accents, the pauses, the silences, the tone, the inflections, the emotions, and the non-linear way that many people remember, reflect, and talk.”
For instance, you can hear Zalman Kleinman in 1993 discussing his artwork in the context of his Hasidic Jewish community; filmmaker and author Nelson George in 2009 talking on the late 1980s to early ’90s Brooklyn art scene as witnessed from Fort Greene; jazz musician Randy Weston in 2008 considering the cultural contributions of Bed-Stuy; and El Museo de Barrio co-founder Celia Vice in 1974 in a dialogue on being a Puerto Rican immigrant in midcentury Brooklyn.
The Brooklyn Historical Society Oral History Collections portal (screenshot by the author for Hyperallergic)
Audio archives are often in danger of disappearing due to the obsolescence of the technology, and can be more complicated to digitize than photographs, books, or even herbaria. The BHS digitization project, supported by a 2015 National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) grant, involved processing, cataloguing, and making accessible nine collections that were previously unavailable to researchers and the public. This included six collections digitized from analog recordings. The design of the BHS online platform, where there are timestamps for particular subjects in the interviews and advanced search functions, will hopefully encourage engagement with these archives that are intended to be heard.
“When we talk about the past, it is easy — when relying on data, charts, tables, numbers, census reports, newspaper articles, basically any material artifact — to orient ourselves materially,” Ali explained. “If we are not careful, we may lose sight — and sound! — of the human beings that are at the heart of these stories. Oral histories remind us that our collective past is built on these folks — who can be both formidable and flawed, unswerving and unreliable. They summon us to be critical, to be engaged, to be empathetic. Nothing, short of an in-person encounter, accomplishes this like hearing the actual voices of the past.”
Access the Oral History Collections portal online through the Brooklyn Historical Society.

This Meme About How Donald Trump Called Republicans The Dumbest Group Of Voters In The Country Is Fake
The fake quote has been floating around the internet since about the time Trump announced his presidential bid in 2015. It has been widely shared on Twitter and Facebook by people eager to expose the businessman-turned-politician as a hypocrite for leading a party he once, allegedly, mocked.
“If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican,” the fake quote reads. “They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.”

In 1988 Oprah Asked Donald Trump If He’d Ever Run For President Here’s How He Replied
Donald Trump wasn’t always so sure he wanted to run for president.
Long before The Donald officially kicked off his polarizing2016run and became the Republican frontrunner, Oprah asked the business tycoon about his political aspirations on a 1988 episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”  Trump had originally appeared on the show to promote a new book and discuss his life as a businessman, but the conversation soon turned toward foreign policy and how Trump would take a tougher stance with America’s allies.
“I’d make our allies pay their fair share. We’re a debtor nation; something’s going to happen over the next number of years in this country, because you can’t keep going on losing $200 billion,” he said on “The Oprah Show” back then. “We let Japan come in and dump everything right into our markets… They come over here, they sell their cars, their VCRs. They knock the hell out of our companies. And, hey, I have tremendous respect for the Japanese people. I mean, you can respect somebody that’s beating the hell out of you, but they are beating the hell out of this country. Kuwait, they live like kings… and yet, they’re not paying. We make it possible for them to sell their oil. Why aren’t they paying us 25 percent of what they’re making? It’s a joke.”
The rant prompted Oprah to ask the question that people would ask for the next few decades.
Of course, he couldn’t help but hedge.
“I think I’d win,” Trump said. “I’ll tell you what: I wouldn’t go in to lose.”

“I apologize; this quote turns out to be a fake from way back in ’15-16. Don’t know how I missed it, but it sounds SO much like him that I believed it was true!,” the singer/actress said on Twitter.

Trump ‘knows Republicans Are Stupid’ Jared Kushner Allegedly Said To Former Editor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Greg Price U.S.Jared KushnerDonald TrumpRepublicans
One of the strategies Donald Trump employed as he began putting his name on the U.S. political map years ago was championing “birtherism,” the long-held conspiracy theory that President Barack Obama was born outside of the U.S. and hence should never have been elected. He often chastised Obama and demanded the president produce his birth certificate, revving up an anti-Obama base that eventually helped put Trump in the White House.
Evidently, Trump may have been using the so-called birthers only as a means to an end.
His son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who is also a senior adviser to the president, allegedly told a former editor of the newspaper he once owned that the billionaire real-estate mogul didn’t believe his own “birtherism” claims, and only made them to charge up Republicans because they are “stupid,” GQ reported.
During a discussion on how to cover Trump, the former New York Observereditor, Elizabeth Spiers, claimed she told Kushner that she had serious problems with Trump’s repeated claims that Obama was not born in the U.S., to which Kushner allegedly told her: “He doesn’t really believe it, Elizabeth. He just knows Republicans are stupid and they’ll buy it.”
Spiers told her Kushner anecdote in response to a question from a conservative blogger on Facebook, and then screenshotted the response and put it up on Twitter.
The Former Party Chair Says There Is Space For A Commonsense Coalition To Emerge
Mary C. Curtis
No one could question Michael Steele’s Republican credentials. During his one term as chair of the Republican National Committee from 2009 to 2011, the party broke fundraising records and presided over a big pickup of congressional seats in Washington and in statehouses across the country.
Today, Steele finds himself on the outs with his Republican Party because he has spoken out against former President Donald Trump’s racially divisive politics. But Steele has not abandoned his party and believes it can be restored to its pre-Trump self. He joined CQ Roll Call’s Equal Time podcast last month to explain how. An edited transcript:
Q. Why have you stuck with the Republican Party?
A. I have a number of analogies that I use to explain, maybe to rationalize, why I stay stuck on stupid with these folks. I always hew to the core of the party, of why those men and women in Ripon, Wis., decided to break away from the Whigs over civil rights, over individual liberties, and the rights of every citizen in the United States. That led to a great Civil War, and on the other side of that, those same stalwarts fought for my community. In fact, it is the political home for African Americans. It was for almost a hundred years. It isn’t today, for good reason. That’s why I call myself a Lincoln Republican. I still believe in those values and those principles.
Q.  Are you a voice in the wilderness?
Q. President Trump did make small gains with Black men. How did that happen?
Truth Behind The Donald Trump Quote From 1998 That’s Rapidly Going Viral
On Tuesday, Donald Trump was elected the next president. Soon after, an apparent quote from a 1998 issue of People Magazine went viral on the Internet:
In the quote, Trump calls voters the “dumbest group of voters in the country.” He continued, saying that they’d believe anything Fox broadcasts.
Trump’s alleged words began circulating the online sphere in October 2015, when Trump’s campaign was beginning to be taken seriously. It has a watermark for The Other 98%, a popular left-leaning Facebook page, though New York Magazine reports that the above photo has now been removed from the page.

Fact Check: Trump Did Not Call Republicans The Dumbest Group Of Voters
5 Min Read
An old quote falsely attributed to Donald Trump has recently resurfaced online. The viral meme alleges Trump told People magazine in 1998 that Republicans are “the dumbest group of voters in the country”. This is false.
While the quote has been debunked several times since it apparently surfaced in 2015, users have recently been resharing it on social media. Examples can be seen here , here , here , here
The meme reads: “If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific. – Donald Trump, People Magazine, 1998”
Snopes first wrote about the false quote here in October 2015 . Since then, the quote has been debunked multiple times .
People magazine has confirmed in the past that its archive has no register of this alleged exchange.
“People looked into this exhaustively when it first surfaced back in Oct. . We combed through every Trump story in our archive. We couldn’t find anything remotely like this quote–and no interview at all in 1998.”, a magazine spokesperson told Factcheck.org that year .
In December 1987, People published a profile on Donald Trump titled “Too Darn Rich”. The article quoted him saying he was too busy to run for president .

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman reported last week Trump has been pressuring conservative media to legitimize his conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election being “rigged” against him.
The former president has also been telling people in his orbit he expects to be reinstated by August of this year.
No Donald Trump Did Not Call Republican Voters Dumb In The 1990s
Donald Trump has made plenty of questionable claims over the years, but calling Republican voters dumb isn’t one of them.
Still, one political meme continues to spread across social media sites and claims he said just that.
The story goes that in a 1998 interview with People Magazine, Donald Trump said he was considering a run for president and would do so as a Republican because “They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.”
The post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed.
The meme features a repurposed image of a younger Trump, with the quote billed as a statement he delivered in an interview with the magazine.
So did Donald Trump actually say that – or anything like it?
No, the quote is bogus.
The fabricated quote appeared on social media sites inOctober 2015, when Trump’s campaign started to gain steam. The meme has continually resurfaced over the years, though it has repeatedlybeendebunked.
We searched People’s archives, which date back to the 1970s, and found no Trump interviews in 1998 – or any other time – that feature that quote or anything resembling it.
Most of the magazine’s articles at the time that involved Trump discussed his celebrity and high-profile divorce from Marla Maples.
Featured Fact-check
People also issued a statement rebuking the quote’s authenticity.
Trump Did Not Disparage Gop In 1998 People Magazine Interview
CLAIM: “If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.” — Donald Trump in 1998 People magazine interview.
AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The president did not make such a comment to People magazine.
THE FACTS: Singer and actress Bette Midler, who often speaks out against Trump, shared the false quote attributed to Trump on her Twitter account Sunday, with the comment that Trump “certainly knew his crowd.” Julie Farin, a People magazine spokeswoman, told The Associated Press that the magazine looked into the claim exhaustively when it first surfaced years ago but did not find anything remotely like it made by the president.
The image used with the false quote shows Trump during a 1988 appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” where he discussed running for president, but made no reference to Republicans being “the dumbest group of voters.” The quote first began circulating in 2015 and has been widely shared across social media platforms, including Facebook. It has been widely debunked since that time.

Jeb’s Campaign Releases Video Of ‘the Real Donald Trump’
Jeb Bush’s campaign is ratcheting up its attacks on Donald Trump, releasing a video that paints the Republican presidential candidate as an unabashed liberal. And Trump is firing right back.
The spot, titled “The Real Donald Trump,” plays on two separate occasions a clip of the billionaire candidate saying that he “lived in New York and Manhattan my whole life” and that “my views are a little bit different than if I had lived in Iowa.”
“Liberal Things That Trump Says,” the text on screen reads before flipping to “Liberal Things That Trump Believes.” Trump has made a point of embracing his eclectic policy views in the past, something that Bush’s campaign is seizing upon in the latest spot.
Trump is shown in a 1999 “Meet the Press” interview telling Tim Russert that he is “very pro-choice,” though a dozen years later, Trump announced that he opposed abortion in most instances, except in cases of rape, incest or to protect the health of the mother.
The spot also highlights Trump’s praise of single-payer health care systems in Canada and in Scotland during last month’s GOP debate, though it does not include his qualifying statement that although he thought it was a good idea for the U.S. in the late 1990s, he does not believe that to now be the case.
Heres The Real Reason Everybody Thought Trump Would Lose
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jonathan Chait
Why did almost everybody fail to predict Donald Trump’s victory in the Republican primaries? Nate Silver blames the news media, disorganized Republican elites, and the surprising appeal of cultural grievance. Nate Cohn lists a number of factors, from the unusually large candidate field to the friendly calendar. Jim Rutenberg thinks journalism strayed too far from good old-fashioned shoe-leather reporting. Justin Wolfers zeroes in on Condorcet’s paradox. Here’s the factor I think everybody missed: The Republican Party turns out to be filled with idiots. Far more of them than anybody expected.
Trump Said Id Run As Gop Because Repubs Are Stupid Quote
I joined reddit to try to find an answer to this. Before he ran I saw the video where he was interviewed in a Barbara Walters-style format about possibly running for office his response was that he’d probably run as a republican because theyr’e so ignorant and stupid they’d vote for anyone. I know other people have seen this, we had a thread a few yrs ago does Anyone have this footage??? Im sure trump bought the rights to it, but someone must have it on VHS or something. I know there is a meme that quotes it being from a magazine article, that is a red herring to make it seem illegitimate I SAW THE INTERVIEW
Fact Check: Did Trump Say In ’98 Republicans Are Dumb
Q:
Did Donald Trump tell People magazine in 1998 that if he ever ran for president, he’d do it as a Republican because “they’re the dumbest group of voters in the country” and that he “could lie and they’d still eat it up”?A: No, that’s a bogus meme.
FULL ANSWER
The meme purports to be a quote from Trump in People magazine in 1998 saying, “If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.”
We were alerted to the meme by a reader, A. Douglas Thomas of Freeport, N.Y., among others, who saw it in his Facebook feed, along with a message from someone who said, “I just fact-checked this. Google Donald Trump, People magazine and 1998. This is an actual quote by Trump.”
We’ll save you the effort. It is not an actual quote by Trump.
We scoured the Peoplemagazine archives and found nothing like this quote in 1998 or any other year.
And a public relations representative with People told us that the magazine couldn’t find anything like that quote in its archives, either. People‘s Julie Farin said in an email: “Peoplelooked into this exhaustively when it first surfaced back in Oct. We combed through every Trump story in our archive. We couldn’t find anything remotely like this quote –and no interview at all in 1998.”
There were several stories in the late 1990s about Trump’s flirtation with a presidential run.
The People Whom President Trump Has Called Stupid
Since he declared his candidacy for the presidency, no group has been deemed “stupid” by Donald Trump more frequently than America’s “leaders.” There are “stupid people” running the country, he said over and over and over again on the campaign trail — making stupid deals with Iran and stupid deals on trade. Everyone in charge was dumb and he wasn’t — except that he was stupid for self-funding his campaign. That, in broad strokes, was Trump’s rhetoric in 2015 and 2016.
arrow-right
But that wasn’t the full extent of it. When Trump tweeted disparagement of LeBron James and CNN’s Don Lemon Friday night, it was a reminder that Trump often divides the world into two groups: those who are stupid and those who aren’t. It was also a reminder that, of late, Trump has often chosen to describe as stupid people who are not white.
That wasn’t always the case. Before the presidential election, Trump mostly disparaged white people as stupid.
Of course, back then, his political opponents were mostly white people: those running against him in the Republican primary and the conservative establishment broadly opposed to his candidacy. He called Karl Rove, former George W. Bush adviser, stupid five times, including in interviews. Bloomberg’s Tim O’Brien, whom Trump once sued unsuccessfully for alleged libel, earned the description three times, as did television host Glenn Beck.
Since President Trump’s inauguration, though, that has changed.
James B. ComeyJames R. Clapper Jr.
It wasn’t Obama.
Nevertheless The Quote Has Been Roundly Debunked
Not only is there no evidence of a political profile or interview with Donald Trump in People’s online archives, or any evidence of these words whatsoever.
Furthermore, that reference to Fox News, while chronologically possible, seems out of place given that the network wasn’t as popular until the 2000 election of George W Bush, and then the 9/11 attacks.
However, Trump did appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1988 and ended up discussing the possibility of a run for president.
And this foreboding fortuneteller of a quote is verified:
I think I’d win. I’ll tell you what: I wouldn’t go in to lose.
Kanye West: I’m Running For President In 2020
Bush has responded to the attacks by presenting himself as a true conservative who has the ability to survive a long-haul presidential race.
In the video Bush’s campaign released on Tuesday, Trump is also shown in a 2007 interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer in which he mentions Hillary Clinton as someone “who would do a good job” negotiating a deal with Iran. Later in the video, Trump is shown in the same interview saying that he identifies more as a Democrat.
The video also shows Trump having warm words for the Clintons. He has donated generous sums to the family’s charitable foundation over the years, in addition to Hillary Clinton’s Senate campaigns.
A chyron on the screen notes that Trump was a registered Democratic voter in 2001, though Trump has also defended his donations to Democratic candidates in the past, remarking that in New York, “everyone’s Democratic.”
In a 2011 interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Trump mused: “So, what am I going to do, contribute to Republicans? Am I going to contribute to, I mean, one thing I’m not stupid. Am I going to contribute to a Republican for my whole life when they get, they run against some Democrat. And the most they can get is one percent of the vote.”
Bush’s Twitter account shared the ad, tweeting, “Why are you a …The answer is, you’re not.”
Within a minute, Trump fired back with three tweets lambasting what he called a “weak hit by a candidate with a failing campaign.”
Donald Trump Memes And The Dangers Of Post
Trump
In 1998, Donald Trump told People Magazine “If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country.”
That’s the meme, accompanied by the graphic at right. Rosemary Olsen posted it on Facebook and said “I fact checked this. It’s true.” 14,901 people shared it.
And it’s completely false.
It sounds like something Trump would say. The picture is from a 1998 interview on Oprah. But while Fox News existed in 1998, it wasn’t nearly as popular as it is now. And while People Magazine did plenty of Trump profiles, they never talked to him about running for president.
My readers, since they are more intelligent than all those dummies on the Internet, know enough not to believe what they read in memes. Except that several of my Facebook friends reposted this.
What does this tell us? It tells us the danger of lies.
Donald Trump appears to be sincere, more than any other candidate. His batshit candor guarantees coverage. His also spreads more fervent falsehoods than any other candidate.
Donald Trump is the archetypal leader for the post-factual era of politics.
There is danger for America in this attitude — leaders with a casual relationship with truth must not lead our country. But there is also danger for Trump himself. Because now any mischief-maker can attribute any statement to him, no matter how outrageous, and it seems plausible. Live by the lie, die by the lie.
Did Trump Say In 98 Republicans Are Dumb
Maravi Post ReporterDonald trumpRepublicans are dumb?
Did he really say it? Social Media is abuzz with a quote attributed to US President Donald Trump saying he would run as a Republican because they are all dumb.
Did Donald Trump tell People magazine in 1998 that if he ever ran for president, he’d do it as a Republican because “they’re the dumbest group of voters in the country” and that he “could lie and they’d still eat it up”?
CNN says that viral meme your friends keep sharing of Donald Trump calling Republicans “the dumbest group of voters in the country” is not true. It is not a thing. Stop sharing it.
While Donald Trump has said some questionable things, he never said anything even resembling this quote:
“If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They are the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they would still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.”
It is easy to believe because Trump has said things in the past without thinking. His mouth is always ahead of his brain

Former U.S. PresidentDonald Trump became widely known during the 2016 United States presidential election and his subsequent presidency for using nicknames to criticize or otherwise express commentary about media figures, politicians, and foreign leaders.
The list excludes commonly-used hypocorisms such as “Mike” for “Michael” or “Steve” for “Steven”, unless they are original to Trump. Nicknames that Trump did not originate are annotated with footnotes.
The list also includes nicknames used by figures associated with Trump, and nicknames he has promoted via retweeting.
What Motivates The Republican Party
The GOP seems wildly hypocritical and unprincipled, until you understand its guiding idea.
In the fall of 2014, the Obama White House was busy trying to stop the spread of Ebola. The administration sent advisers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assist the afflicted countries’ health ministries, and it sent troops to West Africa to build emergency hospitals. It began screening people arriving in the United States from at-risk nations. It isolated and treated several American medical personnel who contracted the virus abroad and brought it back home.
Toward the end of his new book, The Imposters, Steve Benen reminds us of what the Republican Party was doing while all of this was happening:
As Election Day neared . . . Kentucky Republican eagerness to exploit public anxieties started to spin out of control. Paul publicly questioned Ebola assessments from the actual experts, blamed “political correctness” for the Ebola threat, and traveled to battleground states questioning whether Obama administration officials had the “basic level of competence” necessary to maintain public safety.
He added soon after, describing a hypothetical flight, “If this was a plane full of people who were symptomatic, you’d be at grave risk of getting Ebola. If a plane takes twelve hours, how do you know if people will become symptomatic or not?”

Of Donald Trump’s Wildest Quotes
March 18, 2016 / 11:08 AM / CBS NEWS
Since he announced his candidacy in June 2015, Donald Trump’s colorful one-liners have become the subject of intense media coverage and public scrutiny. Here are some of his most wild…
At a November 2015 rally, for example, Donald Trump stated that he watched the Twin Towers come down in Jersey City, NJ, and that thousands of Muslims there cheered what was occurring: “There were people that were cheering on the other side of New Jersey, where you have large Arab populations,” he told the crowd. “They were cheering as the World Trade Center came down.”
On His Past And Current Wives
In a November 1999 New York Times OpEd, in which Maureen Dowd tagged along with Donald Trump as he considered jumping into the 2000 presidential race, the real estate mogul is quoted as saying:
“I think the only difference between me and the other candidates is that I’m more honest and my women are more beautiful.”
On Negotiations With Asians
On August 26, 2015, during a campaign event in Iowa, Donald Trump did an impression of Asian negotiators for the crowd, using broken English. Many in the crowd found it funny. Many others did not.
“When these people walk into the room,” Trump began. “They don’t say, ‘Oh hello, how’s the weather? It’s so beautiful outside. How are the Yankees doing? They’re doing wonderful, that’s great.’ They say, ‘We want deal!'”
On John Mccain’s War Record
During a July 2015 campaign event at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, Donald Trump took on Senator John McCain’s reputation as a war hero.
“He’s not a war hero,” Trump explained, shocking the event’s moderator. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
