Seated at the Bar
Yamato/GN!Reader (no pronouns or y/n)
Tumblr media
Summary: Yamato’s got a crush, Kakashi finds that out when he’s sent on a personal favor to the Hokage to help the shinobi who she thinks might be developing an alcohol problem. But the nervous jonin needs a bit of a nudge, and Kakashi is happy to provide the support. Fluff. Cross posted to AO3
Word count: 1.2k
“This isn’t a high level mission by any means, but I’m worried about Yamato.” The request from Lady Tsunade was clear, and Kakashi sighs as he looks inside the bar where he knew Yamato would be. The younger man had been coming here on an almost daily basis over the last couple weeks, which had those who knew him concerned. His mission here was to see if he could support Yamato before he truly developed an alcohol problem.
But what he sees when he actually walks inside is not quite what he’d expected. Yamato is there, of course, but sitting at the bar with a look on his face that Kakashi could only describe as dopey while he sits. Whatever he was here for, it likely wasn’t the alcohol and that makes Kakashi feel better while further confusing him as he makes his way in and takes a seat at the bar beside the younger man.
“What’s your drink of choice, Tenzō?” The question startles his friend, who immediately turns to look at him in shock. “Y’know, I’ve never been here.”
“It's a relatively newer establishment,” Yamato mumbles, looking up when the bartender approaches with his glass and thanking them quietly. It’s then that Kakashi puts two and two together, smiling behind his mask when he realizes that his friend came here so often because he had a crush on the bartender. That was water in his glass, and that dopey look was a dopey lovesick look.
“So, have you talked to the bartender you’ve been staring at?” Kakashi asks, already knowing the answer but enjoying how the man beside him turns red and chokes on his water. “Really, you’re here almost every night for two weeks and you don’t talk to the reason you come here?”
“I say ‘good evening’, and order my drink-”
“Your water?”
“-and I say ‘goodnight’ and ‘thank you’ when I leave.” Yamato finishes, watching as Kakashi shakes his head. “Look, it’s hard. I want to introduce myself and get to know them, but the introduction is hard when my name is subject to change. Plus everything else going on with me being a shinobi, I’m just not a suitable bachelor.”
“That’s not something I expected to hear from you, Tenzō,” Kakashi comments, and Yamato sighs as he drops his head. “Usually you’re a bit more optimistic about potential outcomes.”
“I just- I don’t think it’s fair to endanger a civilian all because I have a crush.”
“And I don’t think it’s fair to yourself to keep doing this. If you don’t want to try anything then stop coming here every night. The Hokage thinks you’re developing a problem and I don’t know how to tell her that you simply have a crush.”
“How do I introduce myself?”
“You say ‘Hi, I’m Yamato’.” Kakashi said it like it was nothing, and that has Yamato sighing as he finishes his water. “It’s just an introduction, you’re not proposing.”
“No, I can’t do this,” Yamato sighs, ready to get up but instead Kakashi has one hand gripping the neck of his vest to keep him on the stool while waving for the bartender with his other hand. He feels himself start to sweat as you approach, time feels like it’s slowed down considerably and he wants to leave but wants to stay and the indecision is killing him. Why didn’t he plan for this when Kakashi had figured it out so quickly? What was he thinking? He needed to go, but now you were standing in front of him and Kakashi was still holding onto his vest so he couldn’t exactly move without making some sort of a scene so he just sits and offers a smile when you greet them before asking what they were having.
“Something other than water for once?” you ask with a smile, leaning against the bar as Yamato’s cheeks flush and Kakashi chuckles while ordering sake for the two of them. You nod, still smiling as you look between them once more before turning to go retrieve what had been ordered.
“What are you doing?” Yamato asks, and Kakashi’s shrug tells him that he wasn’t going to get an answer that he liked out of his former captain. “Look, Kakashi, I-“
“I’m not letting you give up before you can even try. If you introduce yourself I’ll let it go.”
“Why is this so important?”
“Because you’re a friend and I care. Don’t let me down, Tenzō.” Well, even if Kakashi wasn’t his superior anymore, and order is an order and Yamato wasn’t in the business of disappointing Kakashi. This is why he sits up straighter when you make your approach with the two glasses and bottle of sake. He knows Kakashi is watching closely as you set the glasses down in front of the two shinobi, and he takes the chance.
“I’m Yamato, by the way,” he introduces as you pour his glass, and you look up at him with a smile that felt much warmer than the one you’d given him earlier.
“I’ve been waiting to hear what your name was.” The comment has Kakashi chuckling, Yamato stammering, and you’re grinning now at how flustered he was. “Yamato, I like it.”
“See, you did fine,” Kakashi praises as you walk away, and Yamato looks at him in exasperation. “I think they like you.”
“Y-you do?”
“Sure do. The way they looked at you was very telling.” Perks of looking at a civilian, he supposed, most people who aren’t trained to be shinobi aren’t trained to carefully mask their expressions so as to not reveal too much. “The smile was also different from the first one they gave. Why else would they wait so long to find out your name?”
“Now that I’m never going to live this down, I think it’s time for bed.” And so Yamato requests the bill, completely avoiding eye contact with you or Kakashi as you slide it his way with a wink before continuing to attend to your other patrons. There was a bounce in your step now and, as much as he wanted to think it was because he had introduced himself finally, he was more than certain it had to do with the fact that he ‘d be leaving. Which was fine, he supposed. He tried and that was what mattered.
Until he actually looked at the sheet of paper.
‘Yamato-
Tea house in the market district, 10am?’ Is neatly written on the bill, and Yamato turns red when he realizes that you’re asking him out on a date. With Kakashi reading over his shoulder as icing on the cake.
“I’ll let Lady Hokage know that you’ll be busy tomorrow morning when I report back and let her know that you’re not an alcoholic. Thanks for the drink, Tenzō.”
“Hey- wait, Kakashi!?” But the elder jonin is already gone, and Yamato is fishing for his wallet. Somehow he always ended up paying, and he knew he’d be paying tomorrow morning, too. Only he wanted to pay for your drinks.

Tenzo×gn!reader for #17 first kiss please!
Tenzo wiped his palms on his thighs, hoping the nervous sweat from them wouldn't leave too obvious a mark on his uniform pants. He knew he shouldn't be so nervous, but it was impossible to tamp down the unfettered excitement bubbling up in his chest.
He'd waited for today for a long time.
"Tenzo?"
He spun around so fast he almost tipped over. Had he really been so preoccupied with his own thoughts he hadn't heard you coming?
He sputtered your name in a nervous, jumbled half-shout, grateful when your response was only a soft chuckle at his expense followed by, "Sorry I startled you."
One of his clammy hands went to the back of his neck, scratching his nape nervously. "It's fine," he said, "I was just a little lost in my thoughts."
Thoughts involving you, but he wasn't about to admit that.
You fell into step beside him easily, and Tenzo kept his hands clasped behind his back as he walked, all too aware of that same clammy perspiration on his palms, a result of his nerves. Wasps waged for dominance in his stomach and he was suddenly very grateful he hadn't invited you out to dinner tonight because he was sure whatever he tried to eat now was destined to make its way immediately back up his esophaugus.
You made smalltalk as the two of you wandered through the more densely populated parts of the village. All the while, Tenzo remained keenly aware of your proximity, the way your shoulder bumped his sometimes, your hand grazing his thigh as it swung at your side.
His anxiety spiked with each meaningless touch, the courage he had worked so hard to cultivate before seeing you dissipating in a frenzied swirl of emotion.
The two of you had gone on a couple of "dates," though he wasn't sure that was the exact right term. Tenzo didn't know whether taking walks around the village together counted as dating, exactly, and he was too embarrassed to ask anyone.
Of course, the two of you had eaten dinner together once at the shushu-ya, but that had mostly been accidental; a byproduct of the insisten rumbling of both your stomachs when you returned from a mission at the same time and found one another in the ANBU locker room.
"Would you like to grab something to eat?" you'd asked, "I'm starving."
He'd been all too eager to say yes, so excited to sit across from you and watch your face light up as you talked about your mission that he'd nearly forgotten to replace his happuri when he finished changing.
And the attraction he felt had only grown stronger since. Tenzo thought it seemed like you were seeking him out more often, though he couldn't be sure. He'd read somewhere once that coincidence was often a trick of the mind; when you wanted something, your brain focused on it more, heightened your awareness of it.
Maybe it seemed like you were spending more time with him only because Tenzo wanted it to be true.
But he'd resolved to ask you outright today whether that was the case; to dissolve any lingering doubt so he could ask the question which had been sitting on his tongue for weeks--"Would you like to pursue a relationship with me?"--with some reasonable surety of your response.
There was probably a more romantic way to ask that question, now that he thought about it, but Tenzo believed being straightforward in this instance would suit him best.
By the time the two of you had left the busiest streets of Konoha behind, Tenzo had managed to somehow increase the anxious feeling buzzing within him rather than quell it.
What a mess. How was he supposed to ask you anything when his brain felt so fuzzy and overwhelmed?
Resolute in his plan, however, Tenzo knew he couldn't back down. So he came to a stop at the place he had decided on earlier in the week; a somewhat hidden spot off the beaten path that overlooked the river.
It was private and, he thought, at least a little romantic with the setting sun casting gilded rays across the rippling suface of the water.
He took a long, slow, deep breath to steady himself and then turned to look at you. Tenzo felt an icy shock when he saw that you were already watching him intently, mouth curled in a soft smile and gaze far too intense for him to remain calm.
He cleared his throat. "I--"
That was as far as he got before the wasps resumed their torment of his insides and Tenzo felt the prickling of sweat against his temples, droplets running down the sides of his face beneath his happuri.
He clenched his fingers more tightly behind him and tried again. "What I mean to say is, I really enjoy spending time with you."
Okay. Well, that was supposed to come at the midpoint of his speech but Tenzo's thoughts were so jumbled he didn't think he could remember most of it, anyway, so maybe starting int he middle was for the best.
"And I... well, I had hoped that maybe..."
He couldn't finish his sentence. What if he was wrong? What if you didn't see him that way? He turned away, the mortificaiton of rejection clawed its way up his throat with such insistence he thought he might retch even though he'd forgone dinner on purpose.
"Tenzo."
He faced you again, "Ye--"
The word never had a chance because suddenly you were leaning so close Tenzo could see the hundreds of colors dancing in your irises, could count the eyelashes framing them, and then your hand was on his chin and you were closing your eyes and you were leaning so close and--
Your lips were soft against his, moving gently and molding to his own. He tensed, shoulders and neck going rigid, wide eyes still open. He forced them closed, forced himself to focus on the sensation of your mouth on his, your fingers, dancing across the ridge of his jaw, drawing him subtly closer.
Tenzo wondered if all kisses felt this way. The wasps in his belly dispersed, replaced with something still fluttery but gentler.
When you pulled away, Tenzo followed you instinctively, accidentally bumping his nose against yours. His eyes flew open, cheeks burning, "Ah! Sorry!" he said, taking a step back.
But you just smiled at him, eyes dancing, lips wet and a little swollen. "It's fine, Tenzo."
He stared at you, wondering how he'd gotten as lucky as this. The sun dipped below the horizon, taking its gilded light with it and bathing the river bank in deep, luxurious indigo.
"I don't know about you," you said, "but I'm pretty hungry. Any chance you'd like to get dinner with me?"
Tenzo swallowed, his question still lodged in his throat. Had your kiss meant what he thought it did?
"I--" he started, "Uh, yes." He looked at your feet, unable to continue meeting your eyes.
"Come on, then," you said softly, so close now he could feel your breath as it fanned over his face.
He startled when one of your hands reached behind his back and tugged one of his own free, lacing your fingers together with his and gentling pulling him back toward the village.
Tenzo's face was still aflame by the time you got to the restaurant, but he didn't care. All that mattered was the realization which hit as you'd taken his hand.
Your palms were sweating, too, your fingers trembling as you'd pulled him to your side.
Apparently, he wasn't the only one who'd been nervous, despite your seemingly relaxed appearance. Tenzo smiled as you slid into a booth, dragging him in beside you instead of letting him escape to sit across the table.
"I hope you don't mind," you said against his ear.
Tenzo shook his head. He most certainly didn't, especially not when you followed those words with a swift kiss to his cheek.
Suddenly, he was starving.

✨ imagine ✨
thought i'd join into the fun. Lem's Kakashi imagine / Taryn's Gai imagine
You wipe the sweat off your brows as you stir the sauce on the stove. Cooking is not your speciality, but you know that you have more time than your partner, so you try your hardest.
You sigh through the heat. Something is not quite working right, you can smell the burn before you see it.
“Fuck.” You normally don’t swear, but you are frustrated. It just doesn’t want to work out like you imagine it.
Before you can hear him, Yamato has already stepped behind you, his arms wrapping around your hips to draw you closer. “Don’t worry,” he says softly into your ear.
He is better at cooking than you, has lived alone for years, and so he only needs two movements of the hand to save your dish.
“I was trying to do it for you,” you pout.
Yamato presses his nose into the side of your neck. “And you did. It smells amazing. Thank you.”
You don*t have to look to know that there are little flowers sprouting from his head and shoulders, and though you don’t have the mokuton yourself, you too feel like you are blooming as long as he is with you.

✥︎ yamato x gn! reader || m.list
type: drabble
warnings: slight naruto spoilers
w/c: 782
a/n: apologies for it being shitty. there just wasn't enough yamato content for my heart's liking
Tumblr media
“You know Yamato, sometimes life is best when you - you know live the moment.” You grab hold of his hand and lead him through the forest. You knew you weren’t supposed to be going out and about doing things without permission from the head of the foundation. However you figured the area you were scouting was clear of any paths that tie to the Akatsuki.
You lead him further into the forest. “You might not remember, but there was a place you and I used to go to Yamato. Right here in this very forest.”
“I don’t think I understand.”
You let out a soft sigh. It wasn’t your fault Yamato had forgotten parts of his childhood, I mean after that incident.
You didn’t want to remember anything, but the feeling of finding out that Yamato wouldn’t come back to the small village in the Land of Fire was heartbreaking. The people in the village had stopped trying to look for him and rather decided on bigger problems concerning the village itself.
“[name].”
Your attention glanced back towards Yamato. His eyes focused softly on your unique facial features. It was odd how people of the foundation were taught to be emotionless robots, but here he was getting feelings of all sorts whenever he’s paired up with you. He figured he must’ve looked creepy staring at you in such a way. His gaze moved away from you gulping down the feelings.
“Where’s this place going to?”
Completely ignoring the question you continued running faster. “Just a little further, but I promise we're almost there.” You scanned through the view in front of you. Did I just pass by it? No, no I recalled it’s still much further ahead. Right?
Surely some times have passed by. Longer than Yamato would have imagined. “[name], any further and we’ll be far from the Hidden Leaf Village.”
“I think I’m aware of that fact Yamato.” You didn’t want to admit it, but you were lost. However the forest route didn’t fail you yet. All you had to do was take some sharp turns and you’d reach the place.
It was awkward actually. Having him follow behind you. Though that’s not what made it awkward it was more of the fact that you got lost. Anyways now’s not the time to be thinking about your second handed embarrassment because the view was now coming into picture.
You slowed down your pace so he could catch up, but that may not be as necessary as you though it would’ve been.
“Well?” His figure stood on a toppled over log.
You didn’t know what the whole point of this was actually. In fact you were just debating if you should just head back and forget about it. After all the Yamato you knew back then was far different then the Yamato you now have as a partner for an ANBU mission. However now’s not the time to coward away. Your mind was now clearing up and you decided to say it.
“ - Yamato?” You turned around giving an almost wary glaring.
“Hm?” The man stood quiet and walked closer to your figure.
“How much of your childhood do you really remember?” You knew asking such a question wasn’t worth the waste. After all, the foundation does a great job when trying to forget one’s memories.
However to your surprise he answered back after having to think over what he’d say. Though it wasn’t much, “Well it’s not much, but I do remember waking up in a darkened room and Lord Danzo stood near the door frame. Why?” The man glanced towards your eyes. Trying to find some reason why you’re the only one he feels feelings that aren’t neutral for a comrade to comrade.
A faint smile appeared on your face. “Hm. guess it couldn’t be helped.” you muttered under your breath as you headed towards the center of the open area. It wasn’t the smartest idea given the mission entrusted to you both, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to just forget about everything for a while right?
Yeah, this is alright. Right?
You laid down on the grass patting an area near you gesturing Yamato to join you. He was wary of the thought since it’s very careless to do such a thing, but he insisted. It wouldn’t hurt after all.
He sat legs crossed and he looked down at you.
You fell awfully quiet after he had said his answer to the question. He couldn’t help, but felt sort of guilty. Was there something he was supposed to remember? He was going to ask, but you spoke first.
“We used to do this all the time, Tenzo.”

OKAY. SFW hcs for Kakashi and Yamato going on a first date with s/o?
(I Wass struggling if I should put Kakashi and Genma but... Well xD)
Tumblr media
First date with s/o
Tumblr media
Hatake Kakashi x gn!reader, Yamato/Tenzo x gn!reader
warnings: none, domestic fluffs
a/n: Thank you for sending your request, Hela 💜
Tumblr media
Hatake Kakashi
He’s awkward. Tensed. Overwhelmed.
He’s bad at starting casual conversations so you tend to make the first move on that.
He lowkey prepares for the date. He’ll wear yukata or anything casual as long as it’s not his shinobi uniform. He wanted to feel more ‘human’ with actual emotions.
You probably won’t see his face since it’s still a first date. It’ll take some time before you actually get to see it.
After eating, both of you would probably have some long walks in Konoha, he’s shy to touch you but sometimes, your elbows press or his body touches yours.
Or sometimes he would move you around to avoid getting mixed up with the crowd.
Kakashi’s just a protective man, it’s almost natural for him.
Showing off part 1: he’ll pay for the dinner! Haha!
Showing off part 2: You’ll meet his ninken
Softie Kakashi: absent mindedly talking about team 7. He denies he loves them but TALKS A LOT ABOUT THEM.
Do not expect your first date to be quiet. You have the entire Team seven and Team Gai lurking around because Kakashi “actually went on a date” which you absolutely find it cute.
After your date with him, when you kiss him on his cheeks he’s going to thank his mask for hiding his heavy blush.
He finds himself asking you out for another date. He’s more confident on the next dates.
Tumblr media
Yamato/Tenzo
Like senpai, like kouhai however,
Yamato is less overwhelmed because you are much more overwhelmed than him.
Sometimes Yamato would be so stiff, so you tend to touch his shoulders asking him to calm down.
His conversation skills could be neutral. Not so bad at starting conversations but sometimes he just starts of sooo awkward. Which you find funny and cute.
Yamato would bring flowers or any succulents on your first date. It’s his way of saying thank you for having a date with me.
Will definitely pay for the dinner. No matter how much you force him, he’ll never let you.
Yamato would definitely talk about how “Sakura punched Sai on our first mission.”
He’s a proud uncle of team 7
Random rants about his senpai haha!
Showing off part 1: he’ll show you his wood style jutsu
Chaotic too. Team Kakashi would definitely follow you and Tenzo, he’ll punish them next training (showing off part 2)
Will also talk about team seven. He loves those bunch
Your date would have beer nights. Probably the highlight of your date.
Not that he has other intentions but Yamato is great at listening, be it physical and emotional support. It’s easy to open up with him.
Kiss him after the first date and you find yourself having a kiss as well.

Hi!! For the soft prompts, could you do the one where reader asks their date to come stay the night? With a flustered yet eager Yamato? =w= I love your stuff! But this is my very first time requesting a fic ever lol! I hope it's okay!
hello, my dear! of course it's okay! <3 thank you so much for sending this in, i hope you like this little yams ditty!
send me a soft prompt and i’ll write a drabble
Even when he squeezed his fingers and felt your hand securely clasped in his own, Yamato wondered if maybe he was dreaming.
Because he couldn’t imagine how he’d ended up with someone so kind and funny and smart.  He rubbed his thumb gently over the back of your hand and you turned to look at him, your smile impossibly wide and happy.  He ducked away, averting his gaze as he blushed fiercely, despite the small, contented smile tugging at his mouth.
That you’d ever agreed to go out with him still seemed like a dream.  Yamato was fairly certain no one was supposed to find as much happiness as he found with you; it seems wholly improbable and honestly a little selfish.
He didn’t mind being selfish, though, it turned out, when you were looking at him the way you had at dinner, smiling brightly and laughing at his stories of Team 7.  He liked learning about your life in turn, sharing in your loving memories of your family and your team.  It was nice to have someone to share these moments with and he wondered if this was the part of him that had been missing all this time; the part of him that didn’t mind being a little goofy if it meant making you laugh.  Normally, he would be home now, tending to his plants, sharpening his ninja tools, and preparing for missions or assignments.
And while some part of him--the small kernel of his subconscious still dictated by his ROOT upbringing and his ANBU training--continued to whisper that he should be doing those things instead of holding your hand as you meandered through the village with no sense of urgency....
Well, all it took was one look at you to silence that voice because there was no way that weapons oil could compare to your scent wafting toward him on the breeze, no kunai could feel so good resting against his palm as your hand.
He felt his heart sink as your house came into view. Whether consciously or not, the two of you had taken the long way back to your door, winding through side streets and doubling back a few times to prolong your time together.
This was always his least favorite part of your dates, saying goodbye.
“I had such a nice time, Yamato,” you said, turning to face him, “thank you.”
He could feel his face heating as he shook his head.  “Thank you.  Really.  I always have fun when we’re together.”
It felt like an intimate admission, and he averted his gaze as your smile widened.
Yamato scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.  He never knew how to end these interactions.  Perhaps because he didn’t want them to end.
“Yamato...”  You punctuated your call of his name with a light squeeze of his fingers, still clasped in your own.
“Yes?” he asked, turning to look at you again.
“Would you like to come in?”
His heart fluttered at your question, but one look at the darkened sky and its many stars provided him the answer.
“It’s late.  I wouldn’t want to impose.”
You chuckled, which confused him a little.
“It’s not an imposition, believe me.”  You leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek before whispering against his ear.  “Please?”
Flustered by your sudden proximity, Yamato stammered a response, “I-I sup-pose I could c-come in for a cup of tea.”
The coy smile you shot him made him falter yet again.
“I’d be happy to make you a cup of tea, Yamato, but I’d rather you stay a little longer.”
You turned to unlock your front door, your back to him.  Yamato flexed his fingers around the empty space where your hand had been, already missing the warmth of your palm.
“S-stay?”
You glanced at him over your shoulder.  “Yes, Yamato.  I’d like you to stay.  For the night.”
The door unlocked and you stepped inside, leaving it open for him to follow without further elaboration.
Yamato’s mind raced in an attempt to keep up with you, but it failed miserably.  He felt very hot and wiped his hands down his trousers to dry his suddenly clammy palms.
“Are you coming?” you asked from somewhere inside your home, voice echoing down the hallway to the entrance
“C-coming!” he all but shouted, tripping over the threshold in his haste to keep up with you.
As the door swung closed behind him, Yamato marveled again at his luck, even as his heart slammed against his ribcage as he contemplated the coming evening.
Honestly, if this was a dream, he had no desire to wake up.

Hi Lemony! 🍋 Congrats on your milestone! This is such a cute event, I love your prompts. Can I please request Gai / Family / Soulmate AU / GN Reader but, like, in a squishy platonic way where Gai is like family to the reader but ISN’T their soulmate? They could be an old friend or former student, someone Gai hasn't seen in a while, and they are excited to tell him they have met their soulmate partner since the last time he saw them? Thanks for sharing your writing. Your blog has sold me on character x reader fic in a way I didn’t think could be done. Hope you have lots of fun writing for your event! Love from, Shy Shrimp Anon 🦐
hello, hello, my shy shrimp anon🦐!  thank you for sending this request and for your sweet words.  i hope you’re doing well as 2021 comes to a close.  if you’re still hanging around in lemony land, i hope you enjoy this little fic.  thank you for requesting gai, i do love him so much.  <3
Title:  Love and Destiny (AO3 Link Here) Summary: You return from a long mission abroad with important news.  (Family: A group of people related either by consanguinity or affinity.) Word Count:  1,820 Warnings:  none; gn!reader. .
It had been a long time since you’d seen the Village Hidden in the Leaves.  Your mission slate had taken you far away and kept you there for months, traversing land you never thought you’d have the chance to see as you brokered treaties with small villages in the wake of Orochimaru’s incursion, securing funding for Konoha through deals assuring the use of your shinobi under the newly appointed Fifth Hokage.
Diplomacy was taxing, not at all what you’d set out to do when you decided to become a ninja.  But it had some dazzlingly wonderful, if unexpected, consequences.
Your first day back was spent debriefing with Tsunade and filling out required paperwork.  You sipped tea while she sneaked sips of sake from the secret stash in her desk drawer.  When she offered you some, you politely declined.  Months of dinner meetings with important figures had soured your taste for the stuff.
You’d broken the lease on your apartment when you left, stashing your few precious belongings with a trusted friend and selling or donating the rest because you had no way of knowing when you’d be back.  For now, you decided to stay at a small inn at the center of the village, walking distance to all the shops you’d missed in your absence.  Takeout from Yakiniku Q and Ichiraku topped your list of things to do upon your return.
You were disappointed to discover that Gai Maito and his team were out of the village on a mission. When you asked Shizune about it, she assured you they would be back in a few days’ time.
Despite the quick shock of displeasure that lanced through you when you realized you couldn’t see your old friend immediately, you channeled the Green Beast’s signature optimism as you set about enjoying your return to Konoha while you waited for him to complete his assignment.
It wasn’t difficult. As it turned out, you had plenty to keep you busy in the interim.  More peers than you’d expected were all too happy to take you out for tea or dango to catch up on all that had happened while you were away.
Despite the need for secrecy in their work, shinobi were notorious gossips, and you enjoyed all the half-whispered updates on your fellow ninjas’ love lives.
You yourself had a bit of news you were practically bursting to share, but you dared not open your mouth until you’d had the opportunity to speak with Gai first.  You fidgeted as Anko Mitarashi told you Iruka Umino had been revealed as Tenzo’s Soulmate—the twin marks on their arms appearing when they bumped into one another in the Hokage Tower.
Tenzo, had just returned from a difficult ANBU assignment and stumbled into the chunin as Iruka made his way toward the mission desk to complete a shift.
The pair were apparently the talk of Konoha as they were the most recently discovered Soulmate Pair, much to the chagrin of half the village who had been hoping the sweet Academy teacher might be revealed as their own other half.
According to Genma Shiranui, who poked his head into the conversation halfway through, Tenzo and Iruka were both constantly blushing disasters now that they knew.  He’d spied on their first date only to be discovered before they finished their appetizers because he laughed so hard the senbon in his mouth embedded itself in their table.
“They’re a mess,” Anko agreed, slinging her arm around her own Soulmate’s shoulders and pressing a sloppy kiss to the man’s cheek.
You snorted.  “Please, the two of you weren’t any better.”
Genma and Anko both had the decency to blush and quickly turned the conversation toward the improvements to the Hospital being made at the behest of the new Hokage.  You chuckled at their embarrassment, but let them have what little dignity remained to them.
As the days crept by, you began to worry Team Gai would not make it back before you departed once again. The paperwork you’d completed that first day in Tsunade’s office had been finalized faster than you expected, and you were now only biding time before you left again.  As soon as word arrived from abroad that your request had been accepted, you’d need to depart immediately.  The thought that you might not see Gai before that weighed heavily on you.
Then, one week after your return, you were accosted by a pair of strong, familiar arms as you made your way home from the market.
“Welcome home, my dear, dear friend!”
You smiled, returning the embrace quickly, even if you could never hope to match the man’s strength.
“Gai!”
By the time you pulled away, each of you excitedly inquiring as to how the other was doing in a rushed chorus that made it impossible for anyone else to understand your conversation, your cheeks hurt from your ever-broadening grin.
You took a breath.  “It’s so good to see you.”
Gai’s smile was as blindingly bright as ever when he agreed.
Suddenly, all the excitement drained away, replaced by the nervous pounding of your heart as you asked Gai if he had a moment to spend with you privately so you could share some news.
There was a slight flash of concern in the man’s eyes, but it was quickly replaced with his signature bravado as he happily followed you through the streets of Konoha.  It took a few minutes before you found an empty bench, one secluded enough along a side street that no one was likely to interrupt your conversation.
You settled onto one end of the bench, letting your bag filled with produce and rice sit at your feet. Gai sat next to you, stretching with a wide yawn.
“You look exhausted, Gai.”
He chuckled.  “Our mission went longer than it was supposed to. I won’t deny I’m looking forward to a hot shower and a good sleep tonight.”
You looked down at your lap, picking at your uniform sleeve self-consciously.  “If you’d rather go, we can catch up another time, I don’t—”
A sharp call of your name cut you short and you looked up to find Gai scowling at you.
“Nothing is more important to me than my friends.  You have important news to share, I can see that.”  He leaned back, draping one arm over the bench.  “Tell me,” he said, giving you his full, rapt attention.
You took a deep breath and tugged the sleeve up, holding out your forearm to Gai.  Though it took him a moment to process, soon the sheen of happy tears was unmistakable in his eyes as he grasped your arm, one finger tracing delicately over the pale mark on your skin.
“You found your Soulmate!”
You nodded happily, mouth splitting into another wide grin.
“I did.”
It had been totally unexpected, a chance encounter with a chunin in another village that resulted in the matching symbols appearing on your arms.
“When?  Where?  Who are they? Are they good to you?  Smart?  You deserve someone who is smart.  When I can meet them?”
Gai’s questions continued in a seemingly endless stream, and you answered them all the best of your ability, laughing happily along with him as he congratulated you, hugged you, chuckled heartily at the story of your first date, hugged you again…
It was good to be home, you decided.  More than seeing Konoha or eating Ichiraku Ramen, sitting here with Gai, talking with him, drinking in his unquenchable enthusiasm—that was what home meant to you.
Like many of your generation, you’d lost your parents in the attack of the Nine-Tailed Fox.  Certainly not the only orphan, you were happy with the family you’d built for yourself in the wake of the disaster; friends and colleagues you knew you could call upon when needed.
But none of them so close to you as Gai.  He was the brother you never had and more.  For years, others had teased the two of you that you must be Soulmates yourselves, but you’d both just shaken your heads.  None of them knew about the mark Gai shared with another jonin of the village, and he’d sworn you to secrecy when he told you—a promise you took more seriously than any mission you’d ever been assigned by the Hokage.
You and Gai weren’t Soulmates, the bond you shared ran deeper than destiny.  Your relationship was undertaken by choice, a decision you would make every day all over again for the rest of your lives.
“When do you leave?”
Gai’s voice was uncharacteristically soft when he asked the question, gaze distant as he watched the blue sky shift to shades of orange and pink as the sun sank lower over Konoha.
“Why do you assume I’m leaving?” you asked, but the smile on your face belied your feigned ignorance.
Gai turned to look at you, the same soft expression on his face.  “You deserve to be with them.  Konoha is in no state to take in new citizens.  So, my friend, again I’ll ask: When do you leave?”
“Probably next week,” you said, “assuming all the paperwork there goes through and I’m granted a visa.”
Part of you was sad to be leaving Konoha—moving far away to start a new life with the Soulmate chosen for you by the universe itself.
But the excited flutter of your heart let you know you were ready for this next adventure.  You didn’t know how long you’d be gone this time, but you knew you would find your way back here eventually.  Konoha was your home.  Gai was your family.  Nothing—no Soulmate or mission or natural disaster—would ever change that.
“I’m happy for you,” Gai said, pulling you into another crushing hug.
You sighed, wrapping your arms around him tightly.  “Thank you.”
You wanted to say more, but knew it wasn’t necessary.  Gai always understood your meaning, even when you didn’t.
As soon as you pulled apart, Gai leapt to his feet, clutching a determined fist.  “Now!  We must celebrate this joyous news!  Let’s get dinner!  And then drinks!  I’ll invite all our closest friends.”
You chuckled, grabbing your grocery bag as you stood.  “I thought you were tired.  There’s really no need to go to all that trouble.”
One of his strong hands landed on your shoulder as Gai beamed at you.  “My dear friend, nothing is more important to me than celebrating my loved ones.  Sleep can wait.  Tonight, we celebrate!”
As you let Gai lead you back into the center of the village, one arm slung around your shoulders, you couldn’t help but smile.  And when he raised a glass to toast you and your Soulmate, you felt tears of gratitude spring to your eyes.
Because Soulmate or no, you knew no one would ever love you as much as Gai Maito.  And for that, you would always be grateful.
