...It feels weird. I’m so used to seeing expletives, but not at all used to writing or saying them. Ah, well.

I say “very loose” because it’s not easy translating Japanese puns that sound exactly the same in their respective verses. I couldn’t find a good word for either ‘chou’, the one meaning “peak” (among other things) and the other one meaning “over”, so I hope this is okay. The rest of it should be accurate - that is, give or take a few liberties.

Also, it was tricky pinning down what Majima was saying in the second solo verse. The Ad-lib King strikes again.

The Musical Dice

Here I am with a weekly time-travel in “Throwback Thursday”! Today’s subject is a release by the young visual band Reirei, precisely the third mini-album Sai (Dice), come out on 10th August 2016. If you don’t know them, they formed on 2012 and are composed by Kurea (vo.), Ryoji (gt.), Gin (ba.), former member of WeiβCoRE, who was the second guitarist of the band and became bassist after the departure of Reito on 2015, and Imina (dr.). And now let’s review!

-Shouakuma girl de gozasourofu (She is a little devil girl): the mini-album starts with a song featuring strong folk notes, which give a peculiar touch to the melody; Kurea’s voice is bright, accompained by relevant beats inside a fast and cheerful rock theme, well refined by the instruments, for a catchy track. ---> 9/10

-Tenchuu -Music Overdrive- (Divine punishment -Music overdrive-): the lead-track is kicked off by an exotic melody, leading up to a rhythmical theme, well articulated by the strong guitar riffs and good beats; the vocals are darker and more decise, keeping up the whole thing with an interesting vocal interpretation, for a quite enjoyable song. ---> 9/10

-Aware na onna to kudaranai uso (Pitiful woman and nasty lie): clear vocals open this song in a more electronic and crystalline atmosphere; the theme is slower and the tone is pretty nostalgical; the core element of the track is Kurea’s vocal interpretation, really efficient for this long and enjoyable ballad, enriched by the interesting guitar work. ---> 9/10

-Chikyuu gai chou genki seimei tai denpashii (Extra-terrestrial superhuman life to spread out): an energetic guitar and a strong beat open the song, in a steady and extremely fast rhythm; Kurea’s vocals are auto-tuned, maybe too much, fitting with the relevant electronic component of this catchy song. ---> 8.5/10

-Kan the Matsuri Fever (China, the festival fever): animated vocals open this song, really living and rhythmical, with a strong beat wrapping an energetic guitar; the theme is quite fresh and catchy, with a good mix between electronic and folk notes, especially with the shamisen part; a good song. ---> 9/10

-Agent Five: the mini-album ends with a bonus track, opened by auto-tuned vocals and an electronic and flowing melody, building up a simple theme, well driven by the guitar; then Kurea’s voice becomes deeper, featuring even screamed parts, for a decent ending theme for the release. ---> 8.5/10

Final Vote ---> 9/10

Reirei’s path so far has been quite peculiar and various, making them to be unpredictable in each thing released since their debut. They started as a dark and extravagant band and then continously evolved, adding folk and electronic elements to their sound. Despite the departure of Reito, the band didn’t give up and took one year of hiatus for reshaping themselves, for then coming back in a more brilliant style. Sai represents the proof of their improvement, the need of a musical rest for them, as they empowered their melodies and Kurea found an own spot for becoming more relevant as singer, alternating clear and dark notes without any problem. Reirei represents a promising act in the visual kei scene and they plan to become even better and funnier, according to their next work, the single Sakuretsu Nago POWER, come out yesterday. A mini-album for who is enchanted by Reirei’s energetic electro-folk world and never stopped listening to them.
