The Crawler's Language

So I'm not a linguist by academic specialty but I am bilingual and fascinated by languages and every time I reread the Underland Chronicles I think about language and especially the Crawler's style of repetitive speech.

All of the species in the Underland have different speech patterns. The bats speak rarely, quietly, and in short sentences because it is physically difficult for them. The spinners speak through vibrations. The rats as a species are associated with humor, they're most likely to use sarcasm and constantly make jokes. But when all of these species do speak, they use the grammar and syntax common to human Underland English.

The exception is the crawlers, who have a distinct verbal quirk, saying things like: "Smells what, so good, smells what?" In this essay I am making basically two arguments:

The crawlers word order is completely normal for Underland English.

Often, when discussing the crawlers, the book narration will make a point of Gregor or others having to mentally re-order sentences to understand the bugs. But if you take out the repetition, Crawler sentences become things like:

"Smells what so good?" "Be she the princess?" "Hates us, the Overlander?" "Unless this be not the Cradle"

And this order that goes Verb-Object or Verb-Pronoun is not unusual for standard Underland English. Human and other characters throughout the books say things like: "Stop you. Stay you. Slow your hearts." (Ripred, Book 1) "Meet you Mareth and Perdita" (Dulcet, Book 1) "Gather us here for we must discuss" (Vikus, Book 1)

It's even baked in to the standard Underlander farewell, "Fly you high".

So the crawlers are speaking correct sentences in Underland English, just repeating the first phrase at the end. Which brings me to my second argument.

The repetition serves a grammatical function

In paying attention to the crawler's speech, I found a pattern. The repetition is not present in every sentence. Crawlers often make simple declarative statements without repetition:

"You look much like but smell not like" "Temp will share her food with me" "Rats give many fish"

The repetition specifically happens with questions:

"Ride you, ride you? Run you, run you?" "Give you five baskets, give you?" "You so say, you?"

Even Vikus takes on this particular grammatical feature. When speaking to the Crawlers, he says "We will give four baskets, and one for thanks" but later asks "Take us to your king, take us?" when asking a question.

There are exceptions to this, but to me they seem to be in cases of emphasis or explicit confirmation:

"Only the Princess, Temp serves, only the Princess" "Hate warmbloods, cutters do, hate warmbloods"

I have no idea if this was Suzanne Collins intention, but for me personally, it reminds me of how questions are structured in American Sign Language. In ASL, a question is indicated by raising or lowering the eyebrows. Signs for question words like who/what/where/why exist, but aren't always necessary. One of the structures common with ASL is to put or repeat the question word at the end, so you can sign a longer phrase or sentence normally, and only have to worry about the question facial expression for the last word. Bill Vicars at Lifeprint/ASL University has a more in-depth explanation, comparing it to English questions structured as "You go to [X university], don't you?" or "You like engineering, do you?" But basically, in ASL, a perfectly grammatically correct way to ask if someone is Deaf is to sign: YOU DEAF YOU?

It is also worth exploring why, in my opinion, the crawlers are the only species who have this visible difference to the audience, even though all species are speaking English as a second language. And at a meta-level, it contributes to the basic assumption that the crawlers are dumber than the other species. Gregor has the most to adjust to, but even long after he's accepted that the Underlanders aren't primitive, and bats/rats are intelligent, he still has a kind but condescending outlook on the crawlers. And even other insect species (like the fireflies) look down on them. Having the crawlers speak differently from anyone else emphasizes their alienation from all other species in the Underland. And it reminds me of how some accents or dialects, like AAVE, are associated with stupidity or assumed to be "incorrect" English when they have perfectly valid and functional structures and meaning.

First ref of a new au I have - Ice Crawler!!

Scarab finds the crown while on a mission (before Simon does), and the stray magic from it begins to place the idea in his head that he should wear it. Eventually, it’s all he can think about, and one day, he returns to the universe he took the crown from and puts it on, beginning his spiral into Ice Crawler!!

Fun fact, Ice Crawler is an actual bug that lives on mountains and the edges of glaciers, and CANNOT survive in temps above 50 Fahrenheit. It largely resembles an ant/cockroach mix, and is also called Grylloblattidae!!

TUC Week, Day three!

A very late and very chaotic submission to Day Three: Prophecy/Bane

The prophecy of Bane, and the five senses.

Sight

Ares looks at the two sleeping forms – one his bond, one a pup. One the Warrior, one the Bane. The little rat rolled over in his sleep, into Ares’s outstretched wing. He almost recoiled at that, a lifetime of hating rats behind him. But he was also bonded to Gregor now, he’d protected Boots enough times, to understand why the Bane could not be killed. And so Ares wrapped himself around the pup, to keep it warm.

Against his charcoal wing, its fur looked so much whiter. It was strange, for an all-powerful being to be so vulnerable. White fur in the Underland, Ares could not think of a worse predicament. Had he not used his own dark robe many a time to escape notice? Perhaps it was poetic justice then, that the Bane, who was supposed to have everything – speed, strength, spirit – was easy to spot. Perhaps they would have one advantage, then, if it came down to fighting it. And Ares had little doubt that the Bane would rise to power, eventually. Power, leadership, they were too tempting gifts to refuse (Henry had not). But Ares actually had a little doubt, a small sliver of hope in him, that perhaps this tale would end well. Gregor had given him that.

Ares watches over his bond, his dark skin and hair. They were well-matched, it seemed, after all. For Ares had loved Henry, deeply, but he found himself actually liking Gregor, thinking of him as a good person. In his sleep, the boy looked younger, too young to have lost a sister, only a pup himself. Ares will stand by him, through the trials to come. He settles next to him, his dark fur blending with Gregor’s curls, watches over him.

In dark, in flame, in war, in strife.

Touch

All her life, Twitchip had navigated through scent. Scents were her first memories, her mother’s fur, the warm smell of milk, the familiar scent of her litter. They are her best memories as well: decadent feasts, a lover’s arms, the apples in the Garden. Her worst memories too of course, were driven by smell: the sharp scent of her cave by the serpents, the stench of hate in the air as gnawers encircled her. But now, with her nose smashed, Twitchtip is nothing more than a normal rat, or perhaps even less.

She is stripped of everything here. It has been days since she has eaten anything. They cut off her tongue, and it is so quiet and dark here, it is difficult to rely on echolocation. And even when she can, well, there’s not much to see in the pit.

But she can touch. She can slowly go around it, feeling every crevasse, the sharp edges, the smooth dips in the stone. She explores it’s a great big landscape instead of a few feet of stone. Twitchtip had always seen things others did not, entire worlds wafting in through her nose. And so she curls up in a corner, paw sliding on the wall, breathes in deeply through the pain. She thinks of Queen Luxa fighting back to back with her, of Gregor’s warm leg against her fur, of little Boots trying to tap on her wound to cure her. Ow! I no touch. She thinks of the feeling of Gregor’s life jacket, gripping him for dear life, closes her eyes, and tries to hold on.

Smell

No one asks Temp, but he smells it too.

Something is wrong with the water. They have a word for it in crawler, but in the human tongue he cannot think of one. The water is dancing in strange ways, circling itself, round and round and round again. Temp does not speak up, because no one will listen, besides the Princess of course. The Princess always listens to Temp. And the Warrior might, perhaps, although he is easily distracted, and, as all humans, he trusts his own more.

Temp clings to the princess, ready to defend her, but the fliers are fast, and he distracts her enough so that she does not dive after her brother. When Gregor comes back, coughing up water and holding on to a gnawer, Temp thinks it is not surprising that they are of the same blood.

And so Temp learns his lesson, and speaks up when they reach the island. Twitchtip is right, it is recent. The island still quakes like a young one, eager to grow. But the bugs, oh the bugs. Temp knows their smell. They are… the word is… Yet again, there is no one here to understand the clicking, and so they do not listen. The flier goes down in seconds, like Temp had known she would, because he had seen many a warmblood collapse under thousands of bugs. How they always underestimate the insects.

Flesh-eating. Whirlpool. Temp stores the words away as new vocabulary, and keeps protecting the Princess, waiting for the next danger he will not be able to name.

Hearing

At every pitter-patter of feet in front of their door, Grace jumps up. It’s never them though, never her son and daughter coming home. She sits at the kitchen table for hours in the night, watching the withering shadow of a man who wears her husband’s face. Whenever there’s a little crack or an echo, she’s up, running out, wrenching the door open. But the hallway is empty, and so Grace sits back down, and continues to wait, the faint melody of Christmas songs reaching her from the street. She tries to convince herself that they came back after mere weeks last time, but Jonathan had taken years to come back, long, hollow years.

Sometimes, she sits in the laundry room and stares into the tunnel that has swallowed her children, and listens to the faint hum of the currents. If she scooted a little bit closer, they would swallow her whole. She would join them down there, and defend them, and bring them home. But Grace has Lizzie, and Jonathan, and Grandmother. She has other people sitting on her hunched shoulders. But she does allow herself this moment, to kneel in front of the tunnel and listen to the currents, wait for them to spit her children back.

Taste

Andromeda laid down a few fishes next to him, gave him a sympathetic nudge, and then promptly fell asleep on the raft, wings wrapped around Mareth’s unconscious form. Even if he could not feel it, or her warmth, she still held him close. Because that was what a bond was: devotion, no matter the conditions. That was what Howard should have been, for Pandora. He should have gone after her somehow, he should have helped her, he should have been more careful… Despite the journey, the wounds, the loss of Luxa, nothing feels sharper than the pain of losing his bat.

He carefully scrapes his knife against the scales, cuts through the fish, takes out the innards and rinses the flesh in the clean water. He removes the head, and cuts himself little heaps of it. He leaves a half for Andromeda, and then slowly gulps down the rest, taking bits at a time. He stares out at the Waterway, and weeps. The fish tastes like long afternoons swimming with Pandora, sharing shellfish and squid, afternoons escaping his family always too full of children and crying, Susannah counting her loved ones and always coming up short. Howard was an eldest, and a proud one; he helped people, he loved people, he invented songs. But with Pandora, spending hours eating raw fish and seafood, there he could rest, and think only of himself and his bond for a few hours. He thinks about giving Boots his portion of bread, her indignant yuck! at the taste of raw fish as he chews, the iodine taste spreading on his tongue. Somewhere behind him, Gregor was wandering through a maze, avenging his sister. Howard had not lost a sibling just yet, but he had been old enough when Hamnet had died. He hadn’t been shielded at all, and so he had seen his mother collapse to the ground at the news. Yes, somewhere, Gregor was doing what he could to survive this loss.

The fish is almost done. He pauses for a second, thinking about how he would have good-naturedly bickered with Pandora about getting the last bit. About the fact that she’d died exploring, tasting, the way she would have wanted to.

He knows it’s silly, and wasteful. But he doesn’t take the last bit, drops it into the water, watches it disappear into the deep.

Le Conte Énigmatique de Silent Hope

Autrefois, le monde de Silent Hope était une terre paisible, baignée dans la quiétude et la sérénité. Cependant, un terrible fléau s'abattit sur le royaume, semant la désolation et engendrant la discorde entre ses habitants. Face à ce drame, leur souverain, connu sous le nom de "Roi" dans cette chronique, eut recours à une magie puissante qui priva l'ensemble du royaume de la parole, avant de disparaître soudainement dans les abîmes, ne laissant derrière lui aucune trace.Sa fille, la princesse, versa des larmes incessantes pendant un siècle en raison de ces événements, jusqu'à ce que ses pleurs la transforment en une gigantesque goutte de cristal. Ainsi, le monde fut plongé dans un silence total jusqu'à ce que sept lumières irisées surgissent subitement des profondeurs abyssales.Ces lumières se muèrent en sept héros, guidées par la profonde tristesse de la Princesse, qui par une étrange alchimie, furent en mesure d'entendre ses pensées comme si elles étaient formulées en paroles. C'est ainsi que débute Silent Hope, une quête épique dans les tréfonds des Abysses, à la recherche du Roi et des motivations qui l'ont poussé à agir de la sorte.

L'Épopée des Abysses

D'un point de vue ludique, Silent Hope se présente comme un donjon-crawler assez traditionnel, adoptant une perspective isométrique et intégrant des mécaniques de combat typiques des RPG d'action. Le jeu n'entame pas de longues explications et vous plonge directement au cœur de l'action, vous invitant ainsi à apprendre la plupart de ses mécanismes par l'expérience.Le gameplay se résume essentiellement à un cycle ininterrompu d'actions et de situations clairement définies : exploration, combat, et choix entre avancer ou subir la défaite. Votre but est d'explorer les Abysses en profondeur afin de trouver des indices sur la localisation du roi et de percer les mystères de ce cratère sombre qui semble infini.Le système de combat de Silent Hope est plutôt simple, ce qui le rend immédiatement accessible, mais il n'en demeure pas moins efficace. Chaque personnage est affilié à une classe spécifique (nous aborderons ce point ultérieurement) et dispose de trois techniques distinctes, allant des attaques en zone aux distorsions gravitationnelles permettant d'attirer les ennemis, en passant par le renforcement des statistiques du héros.Ces techniques peuvent être améliorées en gagnant des niveaux et en investissant les points de compétence acquis pour accroître leur efficacité contre les ennemis. De plus, les armes les plus puissantes possèdent un emplacement où il est possible d'insérer des gemmes pour les doter de capacités élémentaires ou autres bonus.Le bestiaire offre une variété suffisante et propose une sélection d'ennemis diversifiés, utilisant des schémas d'attaque et de mouvement très distincts. Cela oblige le joueur à rester constamment vigilant et à adopter la bonne stratégie (parfois en utilisant le héros approprié) pour les affronter.

Les Profondeurs en Perpétuel Changement : L'Exploration dans Silent Hope

Comme déjà mentionné, l'essentiel de votre temps dans Silent Hope sera consacré à l'exploration des Abysses, vous aventurant toujours plus profondément à chaque tentative. Pour ce faire, vous disposerez de sept héros distincts, chacun apportant sa propre apparence et ses compétences uniques. Il vous faudra les perfectionner pour triompher des périls de vos dangereuses expéditions.Les Abysses sont un endroit sombre et labyrinthique, infesté de créatures toujours plus redoutables à mesure que vous plongez en profondeur. Ils évoluent non seulement dans leur complexité structurelle, mais aussi dans la difficulté des défis qu'ils présentent. Cet univers change d'apparence en raison des différents royaumes qui évoquent des moments clés du monde de Silent Hope avant la calamité qui l'a frappé.Chaque fois que vous êtes vaincu ou que vous décidez de mettre fin volontairement à votre exploration, vous retournerez au camp de base et la configuration des Abysses se métamorphosera considérablement par rapport à votre visite précédente.Chaque royaume souterrain est composé d'un nombre précis d'étages à franchir pour accéder au niveau inférieur du cratère et donc vers un nouveau royaume. Cependant, le contenu de chaque étage est généré de manière aléatoire, offrant ainsi une expérience unique à chaque fois, que ce soit dans sa structure interne ou dans la faune qui l'habite. L'emplacement des récompenses et des défis varie également, rendant chaque exploration distincte de la précédente.Cette dynamique peut sembler exigeante, mais heureusement, des points de contrôle viennent à votre secours sous forme de petits feux de camp situés à l'entrée de certains étages stratégiques. Ils vous permettront de reprendre l'exploration d'un royaume sans avoir à recommencer systématiquement depuis le premier étage.

Les Sans-Noms

Nous avons l'habitude d'avoir des personnages, des noms, une histoire insolite pour chacun d'eux mais dans Silent Hope, les personnages de cette histoire ne sont ni des héros, ni n'ont de noms proprement dits ; ils sont présentés par leur métier.Ce sont fondamentalement des individus ordinaires qui devront travailler ensemble pour tenter de remédier à la catastrophe qui a frappé leur monde. Quant aux héros, leurs classes dans Silent Hope (et leurs noms) se comptent au nombre de sept : Errant, Guerrier, Voleur, Archer, Fermier, Combattant et Enchanteur.Chacun d'entre eux possède également deux classes supplémentaires, en plus de leur classe de départ, qu'ils pourront spécialiser en répondant à des critères spécifiques. En accord avec les conventions classiques des jeux de rôle, dans Silent Hope, nous trouvons des personnages habiles dans les combats à distance et d'autres qui excellent dans le corps-à-corps. Certains sont rapides et agiles, tandis que d'autres sont plus lents mais infligent des dégâts considérables.Cependant, leur métier ne se limite pas à leur style de combat. Les sept héros devront l'exploiter pour préparer leurs futures expéditions dans les Abysses sur une petite place près de l'entrée, qui sert de plaque tournante centrale pour l'ensemble de l'expérience abyssale.En effet, en présence de la Princesse, nos héros devront cultiver de nouveaux produits pour ensuite les utiliser en cuisine afin de concocter de délicieux plats à déguster immédiatement avant une expédition. Ils pourront également forger de nouvelles armes et équipements, ainsi qu'utiliser l'alchimie pour créer divers matériaux utiles à l'artisanat.Pendant vos explorations, vous devrez donc vous efforcer de collecter diverses ressources, que vous trouverez aussi bien dans l'environnement en fouillant chaque recoin que par la défaite des créatures qui peuplent les différents niveaux des Abysses, afin de les utiliser au retour.Si vous avez suivi jusqu'ici, vous vous demandez probablement : dois-je impérativement utiliser et améliorer les sept héros ? Puis-je les changer à ma guise lors de l'exploration des Abysses ? Ce serait vraiment cruel de ne pas pouvoir les utiliser autre qu'en relançant une partie, donc oui, vous pouvez à loisir changer de personnages au cours de vos aventures (c'est même recommandé).En effet, sur certains niveaux des Abysses, vous découvrirez une larme de cristal qui vous permettra de changer de héros avec lequel vous explorez ou de battre en retraite pour revenir au camp de base.Il est conseillé d'adopter une approche des profondeurs en renforçant au moins deux ou trois héros avec lesquels vous vous sentez à l'aise et qui peuvent s'adapter à la plupart des situations et des ennemis que vous rencontrerez au cours de votre périple.Basculer entre deux personnages représente non seulement un moyen de progresser plus rapidement dans les Abysses grâce à la possibilité d'utiliser plusieurs héros, mais garantit également un avantage permanent à la nouvelle recrue, qui s'ajoutera donc à celui obtenu grâce aux repas consommés avant le début de l'exploration.

Exploration Sans Fin

Vous l'aurez déjà compris, le cœur du gameplay de Silent Hope se résume essentiellement à explorer inlassablement les Abysses. Vous y ferez face encore et encore, revenant chez vous à chaque fois avec de nouvelles découvertes sur le monde du jeu et ses mystères.À ce stade, une question pourrait surgir naturellement : est-il possible de parcourir le donjon sans jamais remonter à la surface ? Théoriquement, bien sûr ! En pratique, absolument pas ! Comme expliqué précédemment, plus vous descendez en profondeur, plus le chemin devient complexe et peuplé d'ennemis redoutables.Chaque personnage ne dispose que de deux potions, et les seuls avantages dont vous pouvez bénéficier sont ceux obtenus grâce aux repas pris avant de partir en exploration, ainsi que les éventuels changements de héros. Vous ne pourrez donc pas soigner un héros au-delà de cette limite, sauf les quelques points de récupération présents dans certains niveaux.Le retour à la base est très bénéfique, non seulement pour reprendre votre souffle entre deux explorations, mais aussi pour rapporter toutes les ressources collectées lors de votre descente dans les Abysses. C'est également le seul endroit où vous pouvez modifier et améliorer l'équipement de vos héros.Il est à noter qu'il n'y a pas de véritable "Game Over" dans Silent Hope. La bénédiction de la Princesse, qui permet narrativement aux héros d'explorer les Abysses sans subir sa malédiction, vous sauvera lorsque vos points de vie atteindront zéro, vous ramenant instantanément à la surface.Cependant, si vous êtes vaincu lors d'une exploration, vous subirez un certain malus. En plus de devoir reprendre l'exploration depuis le dernier point de contrôle, vous perdrez une grande partie du butin accumulé et risquerez donc de revenir les mains vides, sans les ressources les plus rares obtenues.Dans ce contexte, il est conseillé d'explorer chaque étage en entier, en vainquant tous les ennemis et en ouvrant chaque coffre, plutôt que de suivre simplement le chemin menant directement à l'étage suivant. Sachez qu'il est toujours possible de remonter à la surface à plusieurs reprises.De plus, à l'intérieur des donjons, vous découvrirez parfois des passages spéciaux appelés "Fissures de Mémoire". Si vous les traversez, ils vous transporteront dans une dimension parallèle où les ennemis sont bien plus redoutables, et en sortir indemne ne sera certainement pas une sinécure.Néanmoins, de grands risques engendrent de grandes récompenses. Si vous parvenez à surmonter les menaces qui se dressent devant vous, vous obtiendrez sans aucun doute plusieurs objets rares, et avec un peu de chance, même un "Souvenir". Ce dernier, ramené à la surface, peut être offert à la Princesse en échange d'un plan pour un équipement Légendaire.Enfin, pour conclure cette longue section dédiée au gameplay de Silent Hope, il convient de souligner que le niveau de difficulté du jeu est généralement assez élevé. Si vous ne mettez pas en œuvre les bonnes stratégies pour le surmonter, il est fort probable que vous rencontriez souvent la défaite au cours de votre aventure.

Une Aventure Enchantée aux Tons Féeriques

Il est temps d'explorer le volet technique et artistique de cette production. La direction artistique de Silent Hope ne cherche pas à révolutionner le genre, mais elle met en scène les aventures des héros avec des graphismes simples mais soignés, les plongeant dans un cadre crédible aux couleurs vives et aux tons féeriques. Le thème du conte de fées est fortement présent tout au long du jeu, et ce, pas uniquement dans l'aspect visuel de l'œuvre.En effet, la Princesse vous dévoilera l'histoire tout au long de votre exploration des Abysses, révélant divers aspects du royaume et de son père avant sa descente dans le sombre cratère. En ce qui concerne les performances, le jeu fonctionne bien, sans aucun problème graphique ou décalage d'entrée. Il propose des écrans propres et lisibles, et les ennemis sont toujours clairement visibles.En ce qui concerne la bande-son, bien qu'elle ne propose pas de morceaux mémorables, elle reste immersive et accompagne de manière cohérente les différentes situations que vous rencontrerez. J'ai trouvé certains thèmes plus inspirés que d'autres, mais dans l'ensemble, toute la bande originale de Silent Hope s'harmonise avec les variations d'ambiance proposées par les différents royaumes.Malgré sa globalité agréable et l'absence de problèmes critiques, Silent Hope présente malheureusement quelques aspects moins fluides que prévu. Ces problèmes relèvent de la qualité de vie, avec un certain nombre d'actions manuelles répétitives qui auraient gagné à être automatisées.La cuisine et la forge, par exemple, sont des activités que vous ferez fréquemment dans le jeu, et devoir exécuter une seule opération à la fois n'est pas la solution la plus pratique. Cela risque de briser le rythme de l'action, vous faisant perdre plus de temps que nécessaire.Même le système de gestion des équipements n'est pas immédiat, et malheureusement, il n'est pas suffisamment expliqué dans le très court tutoriel proposé au début du jeu. Vous ne pourrez changer l'équipement que d'un personnage à la fois, et uniquement à un endroit précis du hub principal.Ces problèmes ne sont pas insurmontables, bien entendu, mais avec un peu plus d'efforts de la part de l'équipe de développement, ils auraient pu être évités.
